moreOpen Question: Cloudy aquarium water?
I just set up a 30-gallon freshwater tropical aquarium. I have nothing in there except brand new substrate, and a couple fake logs (made for aquariums obviously). There are no fish or anything, I just set it up yesterday.
To cycle it, I put in a rather large amount of cheap flake food wrapped in a section of nylon pantyhose, so I can retrieve it and throw it away when it has done its job (generating ammonia). I also put in the sponge from my sponge filter in my already-cycled 10-gallon tropical freshwater tank. Inside the sponge is just an airstone with water, creating suction.
Other than that, I have 1 airstone creating a wall of fine bubbles, and the regular filter. When I put in the water last night, it was slightly cloudy, but cleared up within a few hours. This morning (and all day), the water has been very cloudy. Is it possible that this is the "bacteria cloud" that happens when the biofilter bacteria reproduces rapidly in a new tank due to high levels of ammonia? Or is there something else causing my water cloudiness?
moreOpen Question: Will this aquarium setup work?
I have a 29 gallon aquarium, power filter meant for 30 gal tanks.
This is what I have in my aquarium:
Gravel, 1 shell, 1 piece of driftwood with anubias plant on it.
I have one goldfish who is 10 years old, 7-8 inches long. The goldfish will not grow any bigger now.
(The goldfish was kept in a 10gal tank, I just upgraded to 29gal now)
I want to keep two bristlenose plecos in the tank with him too. I have a 100 watt heater (not in use right now) which I can use to keep the water temperature in the overlap area for what goldfish and plecos like.
Will this setup work, and is there anything else I should do?
Thanks a ton for your help.I want to get two bristlenose plecos, which only grow up to 5-6 inches long.
moreResolved Question: betta is overeating..what can I do?
I have a 10 gallon set-up with 5 glolight tetras, 1 black tetra, a whiskar shrimp, and My male crowntail betta. I have been noticing that when I feed the fish the betta will eat all his food, and then go on and eat the flakes food...leaving hardly enough food left over for the other fish..and it doesnt matter if I feed them seperately or not ( different times of day) Its pretty much if you put food in the tank, the betta will eat it. Thus resulting in him overeating and becoming extremely bloated...
I have resulted in taking the container i bought the betta in, filling it with the aquarium water..and putting the betta in it when I feed him..I do this every other day. I know that by taking him out of the water and back into the tiny container is putting a deal of stres on him and I dont want to have to do this to him.
Someone told me to either buy a fish bowl or a special betta hex to put him in seperate from the tank he is in now..the thing is I think its crewl to put a fish in a bowl...and the betta hexs are $12-$17 each depending on wher you buy them....
I am on a tight budget and I cannot justify spending $20 on a tiny 1/2 gallon betta tank when I bought the complete 10 gallon set up for $20.
Any sugesstions??
Anyone ever have a greedy betta that pigs out everytime he sees food? what did you do?
moreOpen Question: Fish experts: water problem?
so I have a 10 gallon aquarium tank and lately my water has been really green. we took it in to the fish store to get it tested and the phosphates were a little high so we put a phosphate reducer packet into the filter. but there was still algae in the water so we put in algae reducer drops into the water and it cleared up the problem. but then the algae came back so we did the drops again and it went away. the 3rd time it came back, the drops didn't work and haven't really worked since. meanwhile we have been testing the water and it is safe for the fish its just really green so you can't see the fish very well. any tips on how to get rid of the green/algae?thanks for the helpful tips guys
also the algae isn't on the walls of the tank; its in the actual water

moreOpen Question: in UK where can i get something like this pet aquarium thing? best answer 10 pts!!?
hi, i won't go into huge detail, but basically i'm getting 2 dwarf roborovski hamsters for christmas. i already have a syrian but i've always wanted dwarfs, so i need like a cage for them. i dont like the expensive colourful dwarf hamster cages as they are just a nightmare, as my last darling syrian got through 2 plastic cages, until we changed her to a rat cage lol. she bit through the plastic, btw. so i'm thinking for these two dwarf hamsters, a 20 gallon fish tank with like a mesh lid or soemthing. just like this, except i can't buy this...:

moreResolved Question: Are my fish going to be okay?
Keep in mind as you read this that this is my first aquarium...
Ok, so today my dad bug bombed the house. He let the dogs outside, put the cats in kennels in the garage and my hamster in the garage. He, of course couldn't carry my 10 gallon fish tank into the garage...
I have 4 guppies (male), 6 neon tetras (varied genders), and a plecostomus (idk what it is). My dad put a towel over the hole in their tank. Will they be ok? Could any have seeped in? They all look fine... thanks :)

moreOpen Question: What's wrong with my Goldfish?
I won about 12 goldfish from a carnival last October, and despite all the money I've put into raising them properly, all but one have died... It's a fighter for sure! Lately, i've noticed it's been having a few different problems. First, a few months back, it started losing scales. At the time I noticed, there was a second [gold] fish in the [10 gallon] tank, and the two used to butt heads, so I just figured it was due to their fighting. The scales haven't grown back, and now there are some small, pimple-looking bumps on its sides, as well. I've been doing some research--no red bumps, so it doesn't sound like Anchor worm, and the bumps look too big and few to be Ich... I've been treating te tank for a while with Melafix and Aquarium Salt, and even some fungus tablets... Nothing's seemed to work. If my fish didn't just hover in a bottom corner of the tank now, I'd chalk it up to a cyst. If you know anything about goldfish, please help!

moreResolved Question: Does this setup work for a 30-gallon aquarium?
I'll keep the heat at about 75°F. It's tropical freshwater. I haven't set it up yet; I'm trying to decide what fish to put in. Here's my current plan:
10 Zebra Danios
7-8 Harlequin Rasboras
4 Otocinclus Catfish
10+ Ghost Shrimp
6-10 of some sort of tetra (depending on size). Possibly Neons, Glowlights, Buenos Aires, or Ember.
Also, can someone recommend some kind of larger fish (2-3 inch) that isn't a gourami or an angelfish? I might decide to do something like that instead of tetras.
moreResolved Question: what are all the supplys you need for a snake and how much will it all cost?
ok im going into 7th grade and im a girl. i have 2 cats, 2 dogs and a family of big wolf spiders that live on my lanaii under the jacuzzi thing. i want a small, non poisonus snake from an ordanary pet store. i have picked one that is on my mind. its a skinny, half foot long green snake. i get about 5-10 dollars per month for cleaning my fridge out. i can get more if i do more stuff.
i have a 10-15 gallon aquarium with a heating lamp and stuff cuz i had turtles but i had to get rid of them because they were getting out of hand.
i know i need reptile sand or something, crickets, some snake food (if they have such food!!) a small sized fake rock from the pet store that has a big hole in the middle where u put water, a pool of water somewhere in there, and some fake plants or whatever to put around in there. how much will this all cost if i go to petco (in florida), to get this all.

moreOpen Question: Help adding live plants to aquarium!?
So i'd like to convert my 10 gallon betta tank into a live planted freshwater tank. Right now I have silk, which is okay, but i'd like to learn how to have live plants in the aquarium. What I'm really concerned about is that I don't have natural gravel (I have a white standard aquarium gravel) and also I'm concerned about snails and other parasites. How do I kill them/sterilize plants?
Also are there any other dangerous with using live plants?
The only stores i have available to be are the PETCO and Petsmart big chain petstores. Their plants are the best, but there are some decent ons that I've scene. Are they okay to use? I really don't want to have to order online unless is absolutely imperative that I do so.
Thanks for the feedback!
Also my Tank only has a Betta right now, and I'm possibly planning to add some Cories. Its filtered and Heated as well.I ment to say that Petsmart and Petco's plants "Aren't" the best.I ment to say that Petsmart and Petco's plants "Aren't" the best.

moreOpen Question: Is this good lighting for my aquarium?
I have a 55 gallon tank. With most fake plants, and decoration. The tank has a 48" light fixture with 4 long bulbs. It had 3 Acticnic lights, and 1 10,000k light. Some time ago, I got some brown algea, (diatoms) and heard it was because of wron lighting, and also got told to get live plants.
So I got 4 plants. 2 Amazon Swords, 1 java fern, and 1 random one. ( I think its a archanian or IDK, something like that!)
So then, some where not growing, and I got told it was because the acticnic where not good enough. So I put them in a smaller tank, with a bright light to grow for a while.
SO today I went to the store and bought two bulbs. They are 32watts and 6500k (wich I heard is great for plants). The package said "daylight" on it.
So will these lights help my plants grow? And will they help prevent diatoms or just make it worse?
Thanks!!!! If it matters, I replaced 2 Acticnic lights, and left the 10000k and 1 acticnic.
moreResolved Question: can two mice be happy in a 10 gallon or is bigger one better?
I have a 55 with 3 females and 3 babies whose sex I cant tell yet but will separate when I do.
Then I critter trail3 with a mom and daughter.
then a 10 gallon with two month old brothers
Then the dad in a critter trail 1 cage who just now had to be separated from the sons because he was being mean
then another dad of the babies in the 55 , he's in another critter trail. I'm hoping if any of the babies are boys I can mix him with them sense he is nicely tempered.
I have so many and other pets like 5 aquariums, 1 terrarium, and two cats.
I keep thinking to give some away with the critter trail cages cause I think aquariums are much better now.
If I do decide to keep them all I was thinking the cheapest thing to do is buy all 10 gallons?
I always though they were small. What do you think?
Should I give away the mom and her daughter? Then when the other ones are older to tell the sex should I give away one of the boys? Or the dad that is much nicer?
Its so hard but I don't think I can take care of them all exsp if the boys that aren't already separated later need to be.
Also the young ones have to be in aquarium because they can slip through the critter trail cages
moreOpen Question: How would you stock a 10 gallon aquarium?
My 10 gallon has a 29 gallon filter on it, so I don't think bio-load will be too much of a problem. Here's what i'm planning on putting in there: Lots of plants, a CO2 system for the plants, and some medium sized gravel. It's cycled now thanks to my baby Jack Dempsey (who has a 55 gallon all to him self now, so don't worry)
So now I would like your opinion on what to put in it. My friend has a very similar setup, and he has 1 male crowntail betta, 2 dwarf gouramis, and 3 corydoras. They all get along pretty good. Would that be ok?
Please, any suggestions you have would be much appreciated! The only fish I don't like are barbs (unless they're Tiger Barbs, which are too small for this setup.) And where I live, we don't get cichlids out here, so any shell-dwelling cichlids, do not work. PLEASE give me stocking schemes!

moreResolved Question: What are your opinions on rats in large aquariums?
I have been reading up on this and most of the answers that deal with aquariums talk about 10 or 20 gallon tanks.
I have two rats who i love very much.
I was thinking about getting a 40 gallon breeder tank which is 36''x18''x17'' i think.
I have 3 cats two of which are quite young. When I am not home they have the spare bedroom so they don't have to access to our rodents. However when i am home they have free reign and with wire cages i am contently paranoid they are gonna hop up on the table and stick a claw through the cage and hurt one of the rats. I don't want to put the rats somewhere else because they get the most social interaction with everyone in this room and i can't keep the cats locked up either. I keep the cats off the table however i'm not omnipotent so i catch them up there more than i would like.
I clean all my animals cages and litters every 3 days but i generally spot check inbetween. (I wouldn't want to spend a lot of time in my own waste so i assume they don't either) The rodents get outside their cage time in a play place i made that sits in one of those plastic kiddie swimming pools. It's like 3 feet in diameter.
I would of course put climbing structures and play things in with them. The thing i am most concerned about is the health issues people keep mentioning.
Any thoughts from experienced rat owners/lovers?

moreResolved Question: What is the best filter for my goldfish aquarium?
I have four small goldfish in a 29 gal aquarium and the current filter, an Aqueon power 30, isn't keeping the water clean enough. I know that is too many goldfish for that size but it is just a temporary home. Currently, the ammonia is a .5 ppm and the water isn't very clear. I was wondering what size filter would be better to replace the current filter (like a filter for 55 gal)? Would it be better to add a second, smaller filter for rated for 10 more gallons? What brand works the best for the money? I am not looking to spend a whole lot on a filter since this will not be their permanent home but I don't want any to die. Any suggestion are greatly appreciated... Thanks!
moreVoting Question: Are Female Betta's Fins As Fragile As A Male's?
I have a beautiful blue female betta in a 1 1/2 gallon bowl. Petsmart just recently started having discounts on 10 gallon aquariums that come with a hood and filter so I was thinking about getting one because I hear the females are spunky and zip around in big spaces and I always wanted to create an asian themed tank with one of those bubbling chinese dragons (I know that they don't need bubbling stuff but I think it looks cool) and a plastic bonsai tree and maybe some other decorations like fake bamboo. I know from experience with my male bettas though that their fins tear quite easily so I was wondering if a female is prone to fin tearing as well on decorations such as plastic plants and rough-ish things like rocks.

I've got a 30 gallon aquarium, with three rummynose tetras, three zebra danios, an oto, a bronze cory (The only surviving from a group of four over a period of 10 years from my old tank) three white clouds, a molly, 2 platies, and a small deformed swordtail given to my by a pet store employee because nobody wanted him, even though he's quite beautiful. I would like some larger, but still peaceful, fish. Before, I was told my tank was overstocked, or to get more of the same types of fish. Though, I don't want a larger tank, with a bunch of little tiny fish. So, I'm probably just going to trade all the fish in, exept for the cory, and restart. I saw a very beautiful goldfish at the petstore, about 5 in, and was wondering if I could house it. I know they grow very large, but would a 30gal be enough for a single goldfish and an elderly cory? I do want tropical fish still, though, after just spending a small fortuna on a new heater. What tropicals can you suggest that are at least 2-4in? Thanks all!I don't believe you understood me at all. I said I wanted to restart my entire tank. Meaning, get rid of them, and just have a single goldfish. So, I think I did have my facts straight, you just didn't take the time to read completely. Thank you both for your completely obscene answers.

I just bought an aquarium today, conditioned the water, then added the first dose of Seachem. I do not want to put fish in yet, as I believe it would be rather cruel at this early stage. I have test strips that identify nitrate and nitrite levels, so I would like to know what will indicate that the aquarium is cycled. Thanks. It is Stability, not Stabilizer.
moreResolved Question: Doing a fishless aquarium cycle?
I bought a used 10 gallon aquarium off of Kijiji it came with a light, heater, and filter... Today I just plugged in the filter to see how it worked and it didn't work at first, but then with the help of some people on here I got it up and running properly... So now it's been working for about half an hour... I put some tropical fish food flakes in it just to see how it would clean it up, and already most of them are cleaned up, except for a few which got caught in the leaves of plastic plants... Right now in my tank there's a plastic treasure chest and a plastic ship, but I'm going to take them out because I see spots where a betta can get stuck... There's also four plastic plants but I'm not keeping them. I plan on using live plants, see, and so right now I'm just keeping those decorations in that came with the tank because I have no other spot for them. And I only have water in there because I was going to test the filter... So anyways, what I'm wondering, now that I already have water in there, and it would just be such a shame to dump it out, can I cycle it now, then dump it out later down the road once I've bought all my decorations? And also, do I need to put in water conditioner? If the tank has already been cycling with a little bit of fish food for the past half hour, is it too late to add the aquarium conditioner? ThanksHopefully you check this back...
Should I turn off the filter once I put some food in, give the food the chance to rot away, then turn the aquarium back on?I'm putting in live plants & I would dump it cause I would still need to decorate it after I cycle it, or else should I decorate it with live plants, driftwood, and gravel first, and then cycle it???
moreResolved Question: 10 gallon aquarium stocking?
okay so i have 3 green cory cats in my 10 gallon so far.
i'm a little hesitant about what to add to them. i was thinking either a group of like 6 neon tetras, or a few guppies, or even some zebra danios.
i'm also open to more suggestions for different fish to kind of get away from the classic tank, but i still want hardy fish that are easy to care for and have little personalities to them.
thanks for the help!
oh ya and i want to add some ghost shrimp for sure, but they don't have a huge bioload so it shouldn't really affect the answers.

It's exactly 16.2 inches long, 13.6 inches tall, and 8.4 inches wide....I was thinking these:
-One betta
-two african dwarf frogs
-four ghost shrimp
-six neon tetras
I know the tank will look a little empty (I can't beleive this is a 5 gallon! It's pretty big...) but I don't want an over crowding isue.
The betta and shrimp don't need much space and the frogs need like 1.5 or 2 gallons each. I know people say neon tetras need a 10 or 15 gallon but people keep neons in 5 gals ALL the time without a problem. As long as I have at least six, I'm good right?
Give me all your feedback and what you think of my plan :D Here is the tank I have:

also i had a death in my tank, a platy which wasn't growing, it was in a 50 gallon with 1 medium angel & a small blood parrot fish (others were picking on him in other tank so had him in a breeding trap in the bigger tank but he escaped as he was so small and got half eaten) hence the water testing, ammonia is 0.25 nitrate 10 and nitrite 0, ive done a 30% water change but don't really know what else to do, going to aquarium shop tomorrow so will ask the expert but for now, any advice appreciatedjust want to add, i have two filters running in the tank, internal 600lph random chinese crap i got off ebay, and external fluval 204.. all has been fine for over a year?? changed polishing pad last sunday but thats it

moreResolved Question: Aquarium Plant help?!?!?
I have a anubias nana tied to my driftwood. It is in a fishless cycle right now and will be for about a month since I just started. It gets plenty of light but I'm just wondering if I'll need to add any fertilizer since there is no fish producing waste or fertilizer for my plant. Also I have bright light in my tank does this mean I'll need co2 injections? If it helps the anubias nana is the only plant in the tank right now and it is in a 10 gallon. Thanks!

moreResolved Question: Is it ok to use a dual air pump in a 10 gallon fish tank?
I have 2 goldfish in a 10 gallon aquarium with a dual air pump (2 air cords going into the tank, one on each side). Is this too much? Should I buy a single air pump? Also, does the air pump & filter have to run constantly? I would assume the air pump has to run all the time, but I'm not sure about the filter. Thanks...
moreResolved Question: 10 gallon: Platies and Mollies?
I was thinking of having a community tank with platies and mollies. How many of each can comfortably fit in a 10 gallon tank? And are there any types of either that are not compatible with each other? Also, I know mollies prefer some aquarium salt in their tank... do platies prefers some too? Can they even live with it?
Thanks!
moreResolved Question: My new zebra danio is acting weird. I need help.?
I just added a new zebra danio to my 10 gallon aquarium. There is a total of 5 zebra danios and 3 ghost shrimp.
The other 4 danios have been in my tank for a couple of weeks and are doing great and moving a lot. But this new one just sits at the bottom of the tank squeezed in-between two rocks. Is the fish sick? Now all of the other fish are chasing it around. I have no clue what to do.
moreResolved Question: Help me diagnosing a Female Guppy?
Well, I got 2 Guppie yesterday, a female and a male. They are both in a 10 gallon aquarium with a Betta and 2 African Dwarf Frogs. The betta is kinda a pussy, so he is not bothering them. Well the male guppy seems all well. But the female is not feeding and is at the bottom of the tank having a hard time swimming. She also has a little white patch. I know I should quarantine my fish but I just don't have enough money to get another tank. So can some one diagnosis this, should I take her out immediately and return it or try to treat it?I don't think it's ich, because the spot is too large for a ich spot. There is only one spot.
moreResolved Question: How should I transport my fish when I move?
I am moving soon and I was wondering how I should go about transporting my fish. I have a 10 gallon aquarium that I just got with some black mollies. Would it be safe to use one of these critter keepers http://tinyurl.com/2e39ltk to transport the fish in? Or could I lower the water level in the aquarium and just leave the fish in it? It is about a 45 minute drive to where I'm moving to.
