I have a 125 gallon saltwater aquarium and I was wondering what you are supposed to do when the water evaporates. I usually just add regular tap water to make the salinity right because the salt doesnt evaporate. I am getting a stingray though and am wondering if thats actually heathly at all. moreVoting Question: What else would you add to this tank? 125g?
What other fish would go well with this list in a 125 gallon aquarium?
1 African knifefish
3 Upside down catfish
4 Butterfly cichlids
6 Pictus catfish
1 Rainbow shark
8-10 Angelfish
4 bushynosed plecosSo what if I only got 6 angelsI wouldn't want to try convicts because butterfly cichlids arn't that aggressive for a cichlid and i've seen convicts kill a 6" oscarWhat ones wont get along? I thought the rainbow shark would be the most aggressive besides the angels if they breed.

moreResolved Question: What should I stock my 125 gallon aquarium with?
I like larger fish 12". I want to get a couple large fish and a school of pictus catfish. (Around 7) I would go the easy route and get a couple of oscars, but I don't trust them with pictus. Ive heard to many stories of oscars ripping them to shreds or getting them stuck in there throats. I really like how a shoal of pictus looks in a aquarium. Im going to have a couple large stones, sand substrate, couple large driftwood roots, and some anubius nana plants. Im thinking of making a DIY background, but I cant seem to find any good ones online. If you know of any please post the link. I also have 3 penguin 350's, and 2 very large power-heads hooked up to 4 sponge filters. ThanksHow would a small group (5) of frontosa cichlids do with pictus. Are there any schooling fish that are good with them?
I like silver dollars, but I heard they are really bad with plants.
moreResolved Question: What other fish can I add to my aquarium?
I have 3 Gold Severums and two catfish in my 125 gallon aquarium. It's been that way for a long time ( I used to have two blood parrots in there but the died from disease (and I tried everything to keep them alive =( )). I decided that I want to add other fish in, maybe two of the same kind so they have a buddy. I'm worried thought that my severums are too big or will kill any kind of fish I put in there unless the other fish can defend themselves and are equally aggressive.
What kind of fish can I add to my aquarium?
Or is there not enough room for more?
Thank you!

Well in my 55 gallon (which has enough filtrationn for a 125 gallon tank) aquarium I have 2 nickel sized blushing angelfish, 1 african brown knifefish, 1 rainbow shark, 2 pictus catfish, and 1 gold gourami. The question is, do i have room for a schooling fish. If so can you give me some ideas. I like rummynose tetras, but there like 3.50 a piece. Im looking for something with nice color that stays under 3''. I do weekly 20% water changes. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thankswell im really looking into color. moreResolved Question: Wet Dry Filter Setup?
I need some help on choosing a filter setup for a FOWLR 75 Gallon Aquarium.
I have decided that I would like to go with a Wet Dry Setup.
Is the ProClear Wet Dry filter a good buy? Should I get the ProClear 75, or 125?(Note: The Tank is 75 Gallons)
What overflow box would go well with this wet dry filter and what brand/model of a return pump would you suggest to go with the setup?
Should I look into a Protein Skimmer and if so, are there any in sump protein skimmers that require no additional tubing?
moreResolved Question: Fish Stocking for 125 Gallon Aquarium...will this fish stock work?
well I'm moving up from a 75 gallon to a standard 125 gallon tank. I already have the Firemouth cichlids, parrot cichlid, and rainbow shark...so they are all going into the 125 gallon. BUT, i've thought up THREE possible fish stocks scenarios for the 125 gallon...tell me what you all think, and which scenario you like best! (also tell me which ones will work out fine)
Scenario A
-3 firemouth cichlids
-1 blood parrot cichlid
-1 rainbow shark
-1 spotted raphael catfish
-10 emerald cory catfish (brochis splendens)
Scenario B
-3 firemouth cichlids
-1 blood parrot cichlid
-1 rainbow shark
-1 turquoise severum
-5 silver dollar tetras
Scenario C
-3 firemouth cichlids
-1 blood parrot cichlid
-1 rainbow shark
-1 turquoise severum
-4 or 5 pictus catfish (pimelodus pictus max out at 5-6 inches)
-3 female convict cichlids (females stay small, only 3-4 inches, and add a splash of color)
*with the exception of the rainbow shark, all of these fish are either from central or south america, so my tank will have LOTS of real driftwood and bog wood, and depending on what species i decide to keep, it will have fake or real plants.
*I currently have two filters that I am going to use for the 125...two Marineland Emperor 400's w/ Bio-Wheel. so i will already have 800 gallons per hour worth of filtration, but if i need more filtration i will get it. i always do weekly water changes of about 20% on all of my tanks.
thanks for any suggestions or advice,
-Chris

moreResolved Question: Question about keeping wild freshwater fish in the home aquarium?
Ok, the details:
#1 - Yes, I searched past yahoo answers and didn't find the information I was seeking.
#2 - Yes, I realize there are local, state, and federal laws that apply, but I would like to put those aside for the purposes of this question.
#3 - I'm not here to debate what is meant by wild fish. I think I'm making it pretty obvious I mean average north american lake-type fish that won't outgrow the home aquarium. Something that you might see in a museum or bass pro shop type setup, but that doesn't necessary require the waterfall and thousands of gallons they have there.
So... What are some options for "wild" type fish I could keep in the home aquarium? I have ruled out most stream fish (trout, etc.) because I don't think the home aquarium would provide the type of current they need. I have ruled out the large fish I like (longnose gar, etc.) because they would probably grow too large for the size aquarium I could purchase. But, I do want something that is at least a few inches in length... not just tiny minnows and etc., although that might be fun, too! :)
So... for an aquarium maybe 55, 75, 125 gallons, what types would be suitable? I've thought of brim, but that's all I can really come up with... I know you all must have some good ideas for me?! :)

i have a tiger oscar (4 inches) and an albino oscar (3 inches), in a 15 gallon aquarium i do water changes every 3 days to keep the bio levels down. in 2 months i am getting a 60 gallon aquarium for them, even though i know they would be better off in a 125 gallon i dont have 1500 dollars and wont anytime soon. so i am getting a 60 gallon and i have seen 3 in a 55 gallon which made me sick but i think that 2 in a 60G will be okay. the 60 gallon will have a maryland filter rated for a 120 gallon aquarium and and under gravel filter. so i wont have to worry about doing water changes every 3 days but still weekly. but it still comes down to my question can i keep my oscars in a 15 gallon for 2 more months until i can afford a new tank for them?okay i called the pet store and i can get a 75 gallon for only a little more so thats what i will get

moreResolved Question: How often would I have to clean a 125 gallon freshwater fish aquarium?
moreResolved Question: Can you give me your opinion on my saltwater tank/aquarium?
Hello!
I have been planning my saltwater tank and would like your opinions on it. I have several points that I'd like to cover. Any information you can offer, I would be grateful for. If you could bear with me while I cover the specifications of my tank. And the population which I plan to place in it.
Firstly, the tank... a 125 gallon tank. 72" x 18" x 22"(L,W,H) It will have a glass top with two fluorescent strip lights. It will have an overflow, and a mega-flow sump filter. Also I will add a Cora-life Super Skimmer Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer and two power heads. Along with that I will also add more filtration with a Marine-land Emperor 280 Filter System. That will do for the hardware.
I will add 120-140 lbs of live sand from the south pacific. In addition I will have 120-140 lbs of live rock.
I will also opt for some live soft corals, polyps and mushrooms. Of these corals, they compose of 3 Assorted Mushroom Corals 3-5", 2 Assorted Leather Coral 3-5" and 3 Green Metallic Star Polyps 3-5". Also to be bought are combination of various soft, polyp, and mushroom corals. In addition to those I may decide to add some more mushroom corals. the reason for the vagueness in some of them is because they will be bought in a package deal so I won't know exactly what I will get.
Now to the little critters:
6 Cerith snails
6 Nerite snails
1 Sand Sifting Starfish
1 Cleaner Shrimp
3 Blue Leg Hermits
3 Red Leg Hermits
My concern about the little critters is that they feed on detritus. I don't know how I can keep them fed and still run a protein skimmer. Maybe get a smaller protein skimmer?
Moving on to the fish...
1 Yellow Tang
3 Green Chromis
1 Clownfish
Possibly: 1 Carpenter Flasher Wrasse and/or 1 Filemented Flasher Wrasse and/or 1 McCoser Wrasse.
Now some of my questions....
Would you change my fish arrangement? What wrasse would you get? Do you know how I could keep my crabs and such fed? Would my corals need better lighting? They are begginer coral and only really need photosynthetic food. But not sure what lighting I should have. You think my equipment set up is good? Is the 125 too small for everything I want? Is it too small to have a certain fish?
Anything you could help me with is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
<3 Curious Aquarist
P.S. I want to be as well planned as possible. But I'd like to know what you think. Please avoid posting many links as your only answer.

moreResolved Question: How do I know that my aquarium is really ready for some tropical fish?
I just started restoring a 125-Gallon aquarium in my living room from a very very dirty and old state. I'm proud to say that since Wednesday, I have cleaned the whole aquarium and all the equipment, set it up, bought some new equipment, etc. And now, Saturday morning, The tank is running with a functioning filter, powerheads, feeder fish (that are doing VERY well) and the water has been conditioning with everything it needed since Thursday. Yesterday I bought a 300-watt heater, so the temp is a nice 75 degrees.
Here's my question. Before I even set up the tank, people here on YA! have been telling me I need to cycle the tank for at least a month before adding tropical fish. The previous owner of the tank (my dad) told me it only needs to cycle for three days, and the experts at the fish store told me as long as the water is conditioned and my heater got my tank to at least 75degrees, I could get tropical fish this weekend, although I should get another small heater. Some people here are very excessive when it comes to fish care, and I don't really think you need a month to cycle..So tell me the truth, is my tank ready for some nice tropical fish, like a school of neon tetras and maybe an iridescent shark?

moreResolved Question: Longfin bannerfish with broken banner (dorsal) fin. [saltwater fish]?
The bone supporting the long trailing dorsal fin on one of my longfin bannerfish (heniochus acuminatus) has broken, and it looks like a clean break. The fin is still there, supported only by the flesh of the fin--I don't believe there is any (at least not much) muscle in the banner portion of the fin itself. I've had fins like this break before, but near the tip. This break occurred only about 1-1.5 cm from the fin's base. The fish is eating and swimming fine. Should I leave her be? The fin can't possibly heal the way it is, but maybe it will break off on its own (or get nipped off...) and then regrow? Or does the fish need "surgery?" (I hope not...) Currently the four bannerfish including the one with the damaged fin are being housed in my 125 gallon aquarium and are about 2.5-3.5 in. long not including the banner fins. I do have a qt tank but it's housing three small fish while I overhaul my 40 gallon tank.
thanks!!!Update: the fish's broken fin is still attached by the skin as of now and hasn't broken off on its own. The fish is still eating fine and I don't want to stress it further, as all four bannerfish are showing a light case of ich...so I'm making sure they are well fed and get their vitamins and garlic.

moreResolved Question: A 29g aquarium with 2 20-40g filters is big enough for??
How many fancy goldfish?
It has no gravel, a few big rocks and fake plants, 2 filters for 20-40 gallon aquariums, 2 12 inch bubble bars with an air pump, stress coat, stress zyme, and easy balance.
The filters I have are:
1x Aquatech 20/40
1x Penguin 125And will they be really really happy in this sort of set up? Is there something else I should add, or take away? I want my fish to be the happiest I can possibly afford to make them.I read that they eat live plants, and also that having gravel was bad because it trapped too much poop, how can I have no gravel and plants so they won't eat them... Can't I still have the fake ones in there too? I mostly put them in there so the bacteria would have somewhere to go and stick on, since there's no gravel.thanks for your opinion, the z, however, I know that commons can get nearly 24 inches long at max potential, and therefore, I would not even consider putting a single common in this tank, however, a forum full of people who have kept fish as long or longer than you have (specializing in goldfish) has informed me that I can put 1 fancy for the first 15 gallons and each extra fancy gets 10 more gallons, so in 29 gallons, I will have 2 fish. They also informed me that each common needs at least 30 gallons PER fish, so I would not "stock it with commons".
It irks me when people think it should be against the law to "abuse fancy goldfish" but think absolutely nothing of cramming commons in whatever gallonage of water they deem acceptable.Well the rocks are for keeping the plants from floating off, really, I don't want to have NOTHING in the tank, how boring would that be for the fish? I know they don't "appreciate" decorations, but I'm sure not being in a completely sterile and empty space would be a little more comfortable for them, thanks sooooo so much for all your advice everyone, even the z, even though I wouldn't follow his advice, it IS nice to not get answers like "15 to 20" I'm a novice, but even I know that's just stupidity....

They live in a 125 gallon aquarium with 3 Gold Severums (cichlids). There is one pot I have in there for them, but neither of them really use it. I haven't seen them fight before, and I don't know why they would start. I was going to go out tomorrow to try and buy some new hiding spots for them. Also, ALL the fish stay on the left side of the tank. I don't know why. The heater is on that side though, is that why they all stay over there? is there any way to make them spread out?
Thanks! The heater is pretty big and I put it inside the area where the filter is, so the warm water gets circulated. I have a thermometer in there and it says the right temperature, but all the fish stay on one side.
moreVoting Question: How do I get baby fish out of my aquarium?
i had a couple mnuba cichilids who had about 50 babies and at about 40 or in the high 30s survived to 2 inches in my 125 gallon aquarium inside a petrified wood "hotel". I got 15 out into a hospital tank and I got rid of the parents once they were mature enough. Now my arrowana doesn't strike at the fish but i need to get them out of my tank because i don't want them picking at my prized fish's fins
also my arrowana has been really lazy lately, i think dislikes the fish eating his fins but being a long time aquarist i know he is healthy and has optimum ph conditions he isnt outgrowing his tank and no matter how much i ponder i cant find a solution oh and i give him a variety of food on a regular basis
when i first got it in January he was very silver but after putting him in my tank he grew a green tint in only ten minutes idk if this has anything to do with it

moreResolved Question: Which aquarium canister filter to get?
Hey guys, I am in the market for a new filter for my 75 gallon freshwater tank filled with medium to large sized assorted african cichlids. There are no live plants in the tank. Soon, I will be upgrading the tank to either a 125 or 150...fish are getting big rapidly. Anyway, i have a fluval 305 right now and absolutely hate it. Priming sucks, the disconnects leak water everytime i disattach them, and have had nothing but ptoblem with it. Now it is not even getting much water flow and is not picking up anything. So, I have decided to go with either a Rena Xp3 or a Magnum filter. Any preferences on which one to get. Also, would you rather get a canister or a wet/dry filter? I am leaning more toward canister right now, but not too sure what the differences are. Thanks in advance everybody, and happy fish keeping!i was going to go Xp4 but heard a lot of bad reviews with them on the impellars breaking and not getting very good water flow...gets a lot of high and low spurts of water flow, and a lot say go Xp3....and with the addition of a bigger tank I would either add another Xp3 or go with a wet/dry, because I forgot the stand I have now would not allow me to have a wet/dry system as it is divided into three sections with the middle section being open and is like a shelf.

moreResolved Question: tell me everything about my goldfish?
i started off with 1 common, 1 comet and 1 fish which looks like its tail is in 2 half's like angel wings in a 95 liter aquarium. wanted to give them a good start. i rescued 1 more with the angel wings and another comet colored black brown and white. as far as i know a bit strange for a comet. so now in have five 3 1/2 inch goldfish in a 95 liter aquarium. it is being filtered by a fluvel 3 filter and another 1 quiet powerful as i know they need a lot of filteration as they are messy. i have a spare 30 uk gallon ( 125 liter ) tank in my shed easily enough to put up if need be. what tank size will i eventually need for them all as i have heard the angel like ones can live in the 125 liter together but i do not wants to seperate them. so as i said, what tank size will i eventually need and how powerful should the filter be ???
moreResolved Question: How long does it take to grow a eating size catfish in a aquarium/pond?
I am getting some channel catfish from a relative on Sunday. He is keeping them in a ten gallon tank( their all under a inch), and wants to grow them to eating size. I asked if I could grow some for him and he said yes( since they would probably die in thier ten gallon before they get to eating size). I have a 30 gallon tank and a 125 gallon ponds. I really only need them to grow to 8-12 inches before I give them back to him( for him to eat).
Thanks.
moreResolved Question: Question about tank measurements!!?
The tank I am looking at is - http://www.aquariumsdirect.com/aquariums/freshwater-aquariums/clearforlifedeluxerectangularaquarium.cfm#accessories
The sizes I am looking at are :
100 Gallon
Aquarium: 60W x 18D x 20H Inches
Hood: 25W x 9D x 2.5H Inches - 2 Hoods
125 Gallon
Aquarium: 60W x 18D x 24H Inches
Hood: 25W x 9D x 2.5H Inches - 2 Hoods
- I'm a little confused with the measurements, 'W' is obviously width, but I'm assuming 'D' is depth and "H" is height - what's the difference or do they count the cover in "H"? + what about it's length? Or are American measurements different?

Thank you! xthanks! Sorry for the confusion! I've always been under the impression that 'D'/depth is the measurement from top to bottom (water depth)!
I've always labeled the front to back measurement as length!
Thanks again! xx
