Resolved Question: My new Cory doesn't seem to be healthy, any ideas?

I have a 180 liter (approx. 48 gallon) cycled aquarium. I have 3 Pitbull Plecos and 4 Pearl Gouramis (2 of each sex). Today I wanted to add a school of Corydoras. I went to my usual fish shop, which I've never had any problems with. The guy there said it would be fine to have 2 different types of Corys, 3 each to make a school of 6. So I bought 3 Panda Corys and 3 Leopards. I got them home and carefully adjusted them to the tank before releasing them. 5 of the Corys are doing wonderful. They already made themselves at home. They are swimming around everywhere on the bottom, checking out the sunken pirate ship and live plants and even ate a good meal tonight. But 1 of the Leopards doesn't seem right. He won't join the rest of the group. He hides out in the corner not moving much. He won't eat anything. He also did a very strange thing, he swam to the surface and then sort of rolled around in circles back to the bottom of the tank. I checked my water levels and everything is fine. So what could be wrong with this little guy? I already e-mailed the fish shop and I'm waiting for a reply back. But in the meantime, I thought I would ask here. Thanks!Well, the little guy passed away a few hours later. The fish shop replaced him for free and the new one is doing just fine. I guess he was just weak or ill. Too bad :( more

Resolved Question: Gourami compatibility?

My 180 liter (48 gallon) aquarium is still cycling, so I'm trying to do my research now on what kind of fish I would like to add. My husband and I really like the Congo Tetras. We also like Gouramis. I read a little online and it said the more peaceful Pearl Gourami should be fine with the Congo Tetras. Is this true? What about Dwarf Gouramis? Are they also peaceful? Can they be mixed with Pearl Gouramis and Congo Tetras? I should avoid the Three Spotted Gourami right? Don't they tend to be more aggressive? Anyone who knows anything about Gouramis, I would appreciate your advice! Thanks!180 liters is 47.55 gallons. Type it into any search engine and that is what you have. Pearl Gouramis (Trichogaster leeri) are NOT Dwarf Gouramis (Colisa lalia). more

Resolved Question: Newbie and I'm confused about cycling?

3 days ago I bought a 180 liter (almost 48 gallons) aquarium. I want it to be a tropical freshwater tank. It came as a set and included was an external canister filter and a heater. I set the heater to 26 celsius (almost 79 fahrenheit). I have a bottom layer of aquarium plant fertilizer with gravel on top and five living plants. Water conditioner and Easy Start bacterial combi system was added to the water. Does this sound good so far? Now I am really confused about the cycling part. I read so many conflicting things on the internet. One place says that you should add a few hardy fish in the beginning to get the cycling started, other places say do not ever add fish until the cycling is complete. I have a test kit, but the employee at the store said it was useless to test the water within the first few days. I also know that I should add any new fish gradually or it will disturb the cycling. But when do I add the first few fish? I would like to have Cherry Barbs as the first fish. I read these are hardy enough to withstand the cycling part, is this true? I don't want to torture or kill any of them. When should I add them? How many should I add? As an estimate, when should my tank be done cycling? Thanks for any advice that you can offer this newbie! :) more

Resolved Question: Drilling laminated glass aquarium ??

I have a 180 gallon glass aquarium that I'm thinking of drilling for a sump. The glass is all laminated bottom and sides. I know that tempered glass can not be drilled, but what I would like to know is do aquarium manufacturers use tempered glass to laminate? I bought the tank second hand and it does not have any markings or trade signs to say were the tank was made or any instructions not to drill. I'm looking to drill the bottom pane of glass. thanks for your comments. Andrew more

When feeding my fish this morning I noticed that I have small snails in the tank. I was wondering what is the best way of getting rid of them? Resolved Question: How long should I let the water cycle in a 180 gallon aquarium before I add my groupers?

I just set up a 180 salt water tank over the weekend. It has about 75lbs of cured live rock (out of my existing tank), 120lbs of old live rock that has been sun bleached, another 75 lbs of rock will go in when I add the fish, 90 lbs of crushed coral and I am adding another 120lbs or so of live sand when I add the fish. I am using a 60 gallon tank for a sump filter system with 1800 gph pump to filter the water (turn over rate of 10 times per hour). When I filled the tank. I used roughly 40 gallons of established water and mixed up about 130 gallons of new water. I realize it takes about 28 days for the nitrogen to peak in a new tank, but I am wondering what other experienced aquariumist think as to how long before I should add fish, seeing how I added some of the needed bacteria to break down the nitrogen (I also added some dirt filter media). My grouper is a blue line grouper that I have had for 4 years. It is close to 12" long. I also have a soap fish that is just as old and as big (actually a bit fatter than the blue line). A triangulated trigger that I have had for over a year. A brown stripped moray eel (about 22" long), golden head moray (a lot smaller than the other, but growing fast) and a green wolf eel. I am also looking for any ideas of fish that could hang in the tank.....my grouper is not nice to new fish at all, so I need to add a few new fish before he gets transfered. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Planning new tanks.... are the set ups correct? And a side question.?

Hey guys! Well about 2 months ago I randomly received a gift Betta in a tiny cup. It was that day that I got totally absorbed into the world of fishes and today I've got myself a 15 gallon filtered heated aquarium with real plants housing a Betta and 6 Harlequins, and I'm going to add a few more later =D. Needless to say, I'm quite obsessed with fishes now. Anyway, I'm still traveling a bit but I plan to settle down maybe by sometime next year in August. But, I've decided to save up money to set up the first 3 aquariums for my future home. I've purchased 2 of the 3 but I still haven't made my biggest purchase. Anyway, I wanted to set up my plan over here just to get some opinions and pointers, and some feedback. If there's something wrong with any set up please let me know. Tank #1 - 6.5 gallons - Bottom: Fertilizer + Sand - Filter - Heater (at 30 degree Celsius) - Light - Real plants (not sure how many but I'm going for tall plants that stick out of the water) - Stock: 1 Betta. - Method: Won't keep this tank empty for long, since there's only 1 Betta. I'll just hook up everything one day and pop him in there to start the cycle on his own with his own waste. Tank # 2 - 15 gallons - Bottom: Fertilizer + Sand - Filter - Heater (27 degree Celsius) - Light - Real plants (5 of them - cover almost 95% of the aquarium floor; 2 of them are quite tall and cover the entire height of the aquarium for about 10% of its width) - Stock: 15 Harlequins. - Method: This aquarium currently houses 6 Harlequins and a Betta, is cycled, up and running. Once I move my Betta to the 6.5 gallon I will slowly add 3 Harlequins per week till I reach the 15. Tank #3 - 180 gallons (exact = 179.5) - Bottom: Fertilizer + Sand - 3 - 4 filters - No heaters - Light - Plants (I'll try to get medium size large, leafy plants - real of course) - Stock: 10 oranda goldfish. - Method: I plan to get the goldfish when they are only about an inch long each. However, I don't plan to keep them in a small aquarium and will be directly putting them in this large aquarium. Since they would be small, their waste would be small and thus the cycle could start without them being killed. I'm not sure if this will work, I need some advice on this aquarium because it'll be the biggest one I'd have ever set up. So please help me! These are my set ups, let me know if they are correct (bio load, method, supplies, etc.). Thanks! Oh and a side question: I plan to make my Betta fast for a day every week. Can Harlequins also be fasted the day the Betta is? Or do they need food on a daily basis? more

Resolved Question: Aquarium Setup Flow Rate Question?

In my new aquarium setup, I have two Rio 20HF pump, will like to run two just in case one fails, the flow rate of this pump is 3,300 liter per hour @ 6ft high, with two pumps theoretically I will gain 6,600 liter per hour. Below is my tank specs: 1) Tank Volume with Sump Volume estimated to be 768 litre or 203 US gallon. 2) Two direct drain pipe from overflow to sump at 1 inch each, or 25mm bulkhead each. 3) Rio 20HF's spec says the flow rate is 3300 litre / hr at the height of 180 cm or 6 ft high. 4) The x2 pumps' return sump to display tank has a 72 inch high and water will travel through 95 inch of piping, four (4) ninety (90) degrees elbow for one pump and five (5) ninety (90) degrees elbow for the other similar pump, because return pump will be placed externally to reduce overflow space. 5) Preferred flow rate for whole tank volume is x7 to x8 times the total tank volume. I'm having difficulty to know / estimate the actual flow rate from x2 Rio 20HF pumps after having gone through these elbows and extreme height level, in which I can't ask my tank maker to drill overflow holes yet, not until I've gotten an answer. Below doubts are what hinders my current progress: Now the question: knowing that for 1 inch pipe, every elbow almost adds 2 ft of pipe length, how much flow will be reduced from the current total 6600 litre per hour @ 6 ft high on the Rio 20HF, need to know this answer coz I need to plan how big the bulkhead to drill on the overflow. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Adding RODI water to my Reef Aquarium water changes?

Hey, I have a 180 gallon saltwater reef tank, when doing a 10% water changes is it a good idea to add RODI water (purified freshwater/reverse osmosis) straight to the tank? After adding the freshwater I usually adjust its salinity accordingly. I have heard that purified water kills many parasites. Is this the right way to do it? more

Resolved Question: Is my Tank Cycled? Can i add new fish to it yet?

Hello, I recently, well 4 weeks ago got a 27 gallon aquarium, i have been cycling it with about 30 or so guppy, the salesman at petland told me that they were all going to die with in days, but only one died and i have counted like 6 or 7 new babies. The Guppies look very happy swimming about and chasing each other at times. I have an assortment of artificial plants, rocks, shells and a cool log looking thing that i got a petco. Do you guys think its ready for some other fish yet? I have not done any water changes, if anything just put in new water that has evaporated. Can i clean my gravel and change the water while im cycling? These are the results i have gotten for my water after some tests: Nitrate-0 Nitrite-0.5 Total Hardness- 120-250 Total Alkalinity- 180-240 PH- 7.6 Ammonia- 1.0 - 3.0 (i think its high because of excess food) And if i am done cycling what fish do y'all recommend? lol i know there are alot of questions and hopefully i will have alot of helpful answers! I again have a 27 gallon tank with a 30 gallon filter with some airstones. Thank you for your time! Abe more

I have a 180 gallon tank with lots of filtration should i keep the aquarium gravel or should i get rid of it Ive heard that with out aquarium gravel it will cause droop eye becus it causes reflection but my tank doesn't do that and since i use a magnetic pump with a sump it pumps out lots of water really fast creating waves is that good or not for arowana? and how many large ones could i keep 2? ty for answering more

Resolved Question: Fish staying at top of aquarium?

Hello. I have a 20 gallon tank with 3 guppies in it. I am pretty sure it has been cycled and I am hesitating to add any new fish because of these fish always staying at the top of my aquarium. Also I recently lost 1 guppy, finding it attached to the intake of the filter. These are the water test results: Ammonium: 0 ppm Nitrite: 1 ppm Nitrate: 10 ppm KH: 40 ppm PH: 6.5 ppm GH: 180 ppm Any ideas on why they would do this? I have a filter and a bubble wall, and a heater, have done regular daily 20% water changes, removed any excess food, fed a variety of foods (live, flake, frozen), and have a semi planted bottom with gravel. Thank you for your advice and hopefully we will be able to figure it out! more

Resolved Question: 46 55 or 90 Gallon Aquarium : What are the differences ?

I want to get an aquarium.I watched videos on Youtube , at first it was a 46 gallon then 55 then 90 then 180 gallon. Would a 180 gallon be overkill ? I live in an apartment. Iam thinking on a 46 gallon , because the ones I seen fit my budget. But the 90 and 180 had alot more room for the fishies. Would a 46 gallon be good enough ? Bowfront or Rectangle ? Acrylic or glass ? How much lighter is acrylic ? How much is a average price for a COMPLETE 46 Gallon Acrylic Bowfront system ? (Not including fish) $300 $400 ? Are there hidden monthly or weekly costs to caring for and maintaning a 46 gallon tank ? I am looking into fresh water fish , I like the colorful ones also silver sharks and crabs. What are the best websites that sell aquariums that have alot of information too ? Thanks more

Resolved Question: How much should a 180+ gallon custom aquarium sell for?

My father made me an AWSOME cumstom aquarium for my Burmese Python & now that the snake has died I have no use for it. It is the most gorgeous beautiful aquarium I have ever seen. Looks like a awsome piece of furniture. It has a rustic wood look, the front & top are slightly tinted glass, the back & mirror & the rest is wood. It is at least 6 1/2 ft long 2 ft wide 2 ft tall, on 3 ft legs Anyway my father is having some really bad financial problems so I was wondering if it'd be worth trying to sell & give him the money.I don't want to let it go, but it's just taking up room & it'd help him out so... Any Ideas what it may be worth? more

Resolved Question: Questions about marine fish?

I'm highly experience in freshwater fish keeping, and I've heard that is real helpful, so I'm now going into marine fish keeping! I can't wait, I've wanted to go have a few saltwater specimens since I saw Finding Nemo when I was a kid, lol. I bought the Complete Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium by Nick Dakin, and it has most of the information I need but I really wood like to ask a few extra questions... 1. How mature does my saltwater have to be to hold a few hardy fish such as clownfishes, damsels, or living rock? 2. What invertebrates ARE easy to care for? 3. If my tank has a few cracks and broken glass in it, will a good cleaning and patching up cracks with silicone fix the situation? 4. I know their not some weird aquatic plant, their living, breathing, delicate invertebrates, but what do they mean by "not for beginners, best for experts only". What special needs DO they really need? I know they need very mature water, but what else?! 5. For an experience person in freshwater keeping going into marine fish keeping, would you recommend I get a 20 gallon tank or a large, 180 gallon tank in which I can grow my tank to a large size and what not? 6. If I get a 180 gallon tank, do you suggest I get a heater for that size or have a few, smaller heaters so I don't bring my water to a boiling point? 7. How can I adjust my lighting to go from bright in the day and to fade away as it get darker outside, and then fade back to light the fallowing morning slowly? 8. After my tank water is three months old, what other fish can I put in it? Preferably does that live in the Indo-Pacific or Pacific Ocean? more

Right now I have a 55 gallon tank with him and a 1 and a half inch flowerhorn. They get along great, never fight or push eachother...yet. I will upgrade the arowana with a 180-225 gallon tank later, when he gets 8 inches or starts to get aggressive with the flower horn or vice-versa. Well its my junior year in highschool so that means im broke all the time with the occassional job and allowance from my dad, but I am saving up for that expensive tank. So i ran out of space in my question box but i was wondering what is the typical diet a week for his size and when he gets bigger 8 inches? what can i feed him? how much? how often? will he get big if i feed him alot or will that just result in more waste for me to clean up? i heard theyre appetite drops wayy down when they get bigger thank god, im really dedicated in taking care of this guy, help! more

Resolved Question: How long will it take to transfer fish from my old tank to my new tank?

I recently brought a brand new 180 gal aquarium. My question is how long will it take for me to be able to add my fish from the old tank to the new tank if I used almost half the water, majority of the sand and all the live rocks from my old tank of 125 gallons. Its been up and running for about a week. I tested the water today and my PH is around 8.2-8.4, nitrate, ammonia, and nitrite are all like 0. Is it safe to convert all twelve of my fish to the new tank? more

Resolved Question: 120-180 Gallon cichlid tank setup?

I am looking into getting a larger aquarium, right now I only have a 45ga. What would be required for a larger aquarium, and what do people recommend? (Filter, UV, heaters, recirculators etc...) I am looking at having other cichlids in the tank so what would make good tank mates for JDs in a tank about that size? more

Resolved Question: Which would be cheaper for a new habitat for my red eared sliders??

I am either going to move them into a big glass aquarim(About 180 gallons or 150...not sure which??) Or into a small fenced in pond in my backyard. Which would be the least expensive? My turtles are 5 inches long and 3 inches long. They are in a tank that is to small for them. The best aquarium I can find it 550$ and about 700$ with all the accessories I want to add, and there is this thing I saw at home depot, you put it in the ground and it is a small pond. I think it was 120$ then with accessories about 200$ but what about cleaning and keeping up with the tank, in the long run which would be the least expensive? more

Resolved Question: what types of fish should i put in this aquarium?

i have a fresh water 30 gallon fish tank with 2 small-avg size castles and some fake plants that are grouped together. in the tank there are 2 clown loaches, 2 catfish (small types) also 2 one inch size plecos (to keep algae down) and one algae eater. i had 4 angel fish in the tank for a few years but they have died, and i think i want to try something new. i am a big fan of mollies and guppies as well as swordfish and zebras as well as tetras. lol i guess i like a lot. what do you all think would be a good arrangement for my tank? i have lots of experience: i also have a 42 gallon bow-front tank and a 180 salt water tank that my dad takes care of (im 17)..thanks! more
