Open Question: Help with African Dwarf Frogs and treating the tank for fungus?

We purchased a new Molly for our fish tank a few days ago. She had acted a little strange, but seemed overall ok. We foud her this morning with a white "fuzz" on her. We took her out of the tank, but she died before we got to the pet store. The store told us to treat the tank with Fungus Guard dissolving fizz tablets. I dropped one in my 10 gallon tank and it turned my water a green color... Anyway...my African Dwarf Frogs immediately began acting very frantic. They were trying to climb out, staying at the surface non-stop and behaving in a way I have NEVER seen. I have watched them since 10 pm last night (it is now 3 am) and they were acting more and more hysterical so I netted them out of the water, put them into a 1 gallon storage container with 75% fresh water, a small plant and that is it until morning. Is Fungus Guard harmful to the frogs? I asked the girl working at PetSmart, and she said no, but I don't exactly take her word as gospel! ;) As soon as I netted the frogs out (they didn't argue with being removed from the water) and got them into their new water, they took a breath at the top and settled onto the bottom where they usually stay. Help - what do I do? I don't want to risk the rest of my tank and NOT treat for whatever fungus the fish had, but I don't want to kill my frogs with the treatment either. By the way - we keep freshwater aquarium salt in our tank all the time at a rate of 1 tbsp per 10 gallons. Thank you... more

Resolved Question: Too big to be eaten by a Pictus Catfish?

Everything I've read advises that a PC will grow to a max size of 6". As well, everything I've read tells me the PC is carnivorous, but as long as a fish is too big to fit in to a PC's mouth, the PC will leave it alone. Here's my dilemma: No where can I find what "too big" (for a full grown PC) means. I would like to have a three PCs, as bottom dwellers, for my 75 gallon tank. I would like to have a shoal of twelve Silver Hatchet Fish, as top dwellers, for the aquarium. I've read SHF get to a max size of 3". Here's my question: Does a 3" SHF qualify as "too big" for a full grown PC's mouth? I'd also like to know if the fish's natural tendency(ies) to occupy different levels of the aquarium, which is 20" high, will play some part in cohesive community living. Thank you for any input you can provide.I just read some other sites telling me how big the PC will get. Now I'm looking at 10" in length. If this is true, I'll just work on another type of set up that I had in mind. But still, does anyone know the length I can expect fro a PC at all? more

Resolved Question: Help treating ich in a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium?

I have a 30-gallon tropical freshwater aquarium with the following inhabitants: -8 Zebra Danios -4 Otocinclus Cats -2 Boesemani Rainbowfish -8 Neon Tetras I put the neons in yesterday. They were healthy at the pet store (and had been at the pet store for about two weeks, so they survived shipping well), but this morning I noticed one or two white bumps on each of the neons. I examined all the other fish carefully (especially the rainbows... they cost $12 each) but did not see any signs of ich on them. I REALLY want to nip this in the bud before any of my other fish get infected. So today I did a 25% water change, turned off my carbon filter and lights, started slowly raising the temperature from 75°F (I'll get to 85°F in a few days), and added a Malachite Green treatment. As none of the other fish in the tank are infected, I only added the recommended dosage for tetras (which is half the recommended dosage for any other fish). So how to proceed from here? Should I start doing daily water changes? In what percentage? Should I continue adding a tetra-sized dose of Malachite Green daily without water changes? The instructions didn't specify... more

Resolved Question: Saltwater Beginner! Questions!!!?

OK so I'm setting up a saltwater tank soon and I have some questions about the fish I'm putting in there! I'm NOT a beginner with fish though...I have already kept freshwater fish, anywhere from betta's to discus, so I know about cycling, weekly water changes, weekly water testing...etc. And I already have done lots of research on saltwater fish but i cant find answers to some of my questions though... 1. Will a Yellow Tang get along with Damselfish? 2. Will Dwarf Sea Horses get along with a Yellow Tang and Damselfish, or are they better on their own? 3.Will Clown fish get along with a Yellow Tang and Damselfish? I hear if you have anemones they might get very territorial? 4.Will Gobies get along with the above fish? 5.What is the best filter? I would like if it isn't very expensive! 6.Will a 75 gallon aquarium be enough 1 Yellow Tang (I know they get like 8 inches long!) 2 Damselfish, 1 Clown fish and/or a seahorse? Thanks for reading! more

Resolved Question: A Possible Substitute For a Blood Parrot Cichlid?

I have a 75 gallon tank that I would like to make in to a community aquarium. Before telling me that Blood Parrot Cichlidss are not good community fish...I'll stick with the information I received from **http://www.tropicalfishandaquariums.com/compatibility/index.php** and **http://aqadvisor.com/AqAdvisor.php** which tell me that, for the fish I want in my community, a BPC will work. I understand that BPCs are 1) not naturally occurring in the wild, 2) they are bred deformed, and 3) they may suffer health problems due to their deformities. With this, I have an ethical dilemma against purchasing a BPC for my auquarium. Here's my question: Does anyone know of a good substitute for a BPC? I'm looking for similar qualities in the substitute that can be found in a BPC. 1) Bold or bright coloration. 2) Peaceful in nature. 3) Can live comfortably as the single fish of it's species in a community aquarium. 4) Will reach approx. 8 inches in size. 5) Will not become stressed by being around fast swimming/darting fish. Resolved Question: Community tank for a 75 gallon aquarium.?

I have a 75 gallon aquarium and would like to create a community tank. I viewed a website that had a pretty cool idea for a tank, but the type of fish the site suggested are rare (at least for where I live) and would need to be special ordered. Because I like the concept the website used, I'd like to kind of copy it. The concept emphasized the different sizes of fish that could live together in a 75 gallon aquarium. I kinda have my mind set (but it can be changed) on the following: 1) One Large fish = Blood Parrot Cichlid (8 inches) 2) Two Medium size fish = Firemouth Cichlids (6 inches) 3) A school (10 - 12) of small size fish = ??? = (2.5 - 3 inches) Here's the question. Does anyone have a recommendation for what the school of fish could be? Would 10 - 12 Tiger Barbs work? If not, any suggestion(s) would be appreciated. And thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Why aren't my Ocellaris Clown Fish Aren't Getting Any Bigger?

Three years ago I bought two tank raised baby clown fish that were a little over 1/2 inch long each. One of them died and I eventually bought another which was a little under an inch long. They paired off and seem perfectly happy and healthy but they are not getting any bigger. What could be causing this? Some information: For around two years they have been housed in a 75 gallon fish only aquarium with around 70 lbs. of live rock, two filters and a protein skimmer. The water parameters are good and they are fed once a day...sometimes a mixture of flake food or pellets and sometimes live or frozen food. They have healthy appetites. Their tank mates are a Royal Tang, a Neon Goby and a Striped Damsel as well as a cleanup crew consisting of starfish, snails and crabs. Everyone seems to get along fine and there doesn't appear to be any problems except for the fact that the clown fish haven't grown perceptibly since I acquired them. I can't seem to find any information about this online. more

My boyfriend and I are looking into getting a 75 gallon tank in the near future. We would like to get a Rainbow shark, so of course the fish can't be the average small aquarium fish. Resolved Question: Homemade plants for tropical fish tank?

Does anyone have experience with making your own plants for a fish tank? What types of plastic to use or avoid? how do I make sure I don't poison my water? I see bunches of plastic plants and flowers at the local hobby store that are very cheap and could be trimmed to look nice in a tank. I'm not sure what they're made out of, or what they might be painted with. also I'd like to make my own bases for the plants out of aquarium gravel to blend in with the tank. what kind of glue or epoxy would be safe? This is a 75 gallon tropical community tank, mostly livebearers, I need more cover for the babies. any help much appreciated. thanks. more

Resolved Question: Help with my fish tank temperature please!?

I have a 14 gallon tank with 1 Rubber Lip Pleco, 1 Male Betta, and 2 Baby Bala's. (They're only about an inch and a half long. And I know how big they will get. They will be moved into a 75 gallon when they get a little bigger.) It's very hot here, and we don't have AC. I'm in Minnesota, so luckily at night it cools down, but during the day my tank gets to be about 86 degrees max. I know not to make the temp go down too fast or the fish will go into shock. My main question is.. Will my tank being that hot harm the fish I have in there? They don't seem to be acting any different. I leave my aquarium lights off when it's this warm because I know that heats the water more. I have a fan on my tank and the room lights off to keep it as cool as possible. Help or suggestions please. ><Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. I'll start working on it. And I know about the tank size and what not. Once they get big I'm going to get more their size, and move them into a large tank (at least 6 ft long.) more

Resolved Question: The ultimate Tropical Fish Tank questions. Can you answer all them clearly? Best answer in no time if you can.?

Now. I am going to get a Tropical tank before I go back to school in September. So I am asking the questions now. I know most of the basics like I will need a heater and nets and stuff. I'm not stupid. I just want to get it straight. Here I go. My aquarium will be 20-50 gallons. I want Danios, Guppies, Platy's, Rainbow Fish, Rasbora, Tetras and Sword Tails. Are these good choises in starter fish? How many of each kind will make them feel safe and normal? What specific type of fish would be the best? I'm after a very colourful aquarium. Do you know of any flowering live plant that would go with these? What are some foods that they can eat? Can they eat any vegetables humans can eat like Goldfish can? How often should I do 75% water changes and 25% water changes? I know these are a lot of questions but I want to make sure I have everything right. Back to the questions. Are there any medications I should keep on hand just in case? Is there anything else I should know about anything with these future fish? Thank you for your time!My aquarium will be fully sycled more

Resolved Question: How much would you pay for this setup?

So I want to either upgrade to a larger tank for fish or upgrade to a larger tank for some kind of reptile. Either way it doesn't look like my ten gallon is going to work out. I can't just leave it lying around, a couple months in the future I'm going to be trying to fit something else in that thing. So I think I'm going to sell it. So here is what I have: Tank It's ten gallons. The dimensions are 20 1/2"L, 10 1/2"W, 12 1/2"H. This is the oldest product, but it's strong. If my time line is correct it's about 16 to 17 years old. It's been used to house turtles, fish, frogs, rats, lizards, and hamsters. Not exactly in that order and sometimes more than once in my lifetime. The sealant is still good. It's visible at the bottom which can be a little ugly but it can be hidden with a little gravel or sand. I have it filled and running at this very moment and it's been like that for two months so it doesn't have any leaks. There is a screen lid but it doesn't lock and it has several small punctures. I probably wouldn't sell it with the tank for that reason. The Equipment: (Everything is about 1-2 months old, but not any older.) 10 Gallon Aqueon Power Filter With Two Refills This product is only a month or two old and the filter pad has been changed twice. The second change was with no fish in the tank. I have it running currently because I was going to cycle it and add fish but changed my mind. Plus the sound of the waterfall is soothing. Top Fin Air Pump 1000 Once again it's running for cycling and sound. Top Fin Airline Tubing It's the clear one, 8 Ft. of it. I also have extra tubing that I cut in half of the same type. One of the halves is dyed a little blue. Top Fin Airline Holders I still have all six. Top Fin 4" Air Stone Actually I have two. I switch them every month. Hydor Mini Heater 5-10 Gallon What sucks is it isn't adjustable. It's one setting is 75 degrees. But it is submersible which I find makes for a cleaner appearance in the tank. It's open and in the tank but I haven't had to turn it on once. I live in California and I bought it just before summer. And with no air conditioning in my room just the air in the room keeps the tank at a steady 75. Top Fin Aquarium Thermometer Strip Small It's stuck on the side of the tank, in the middle, on the opposite side of where I have the filter and heater. The Decorations: Top Fin Hygrophilia Plastic Plants 8" & 12" Top Fin Ludwigia Plastic Plants 8" & 12" Top Fin Anarcharis Plastic Plants 12" Top Fin Roman Posts Top Fin Aquarium Gravel 10Lb. Rainbow And/Or Black I could sell both, but I'd prefer just to sell the rainbow gravel. If I get the large fish tank I'm going to have black gravel so keeping the black gravel I already have would be great. Top Fin Gravel Vacuum Either Small Or Large I can't remember the size. It's been used once. I guess I could throw it in since if I got a larger tank I believe I'd need a larger vacuum. Tank Background I'm not sure if it has a brand. I just got it from PetSmart. It's black and depicts some bright green plants and a log. It's quite pretty in my opinion. Extra: Top Fin Water Conditioner 2 Fl Oz. It is about half empty so it's more like 1 fluid ounce, but that's more than enough to treat the entire ten gallon tank. Top Fin Bacteria Supplement 2 Fl. Oz. Once again this has been used. There's about 1/4 to 1/3 missing, but what's left is again more than enough. That's about it. I'd probably sell it as a package, but I could sell some parts separately I guess. But what's the worth of it all? more

Resolved Question: Bearded Dragon setup?

I have a 75 gallon aquarium with a locking reptile lid that I'm wanting to turn into a Beardie habitat. I know they need a desert environment, but what specific items would be helpfull to the Beardie? I contemplated making an underground burrow, but I'm unsure if it would use it. Any help would be great. Thanks!Maybe I should have been more specific in my question, lol. I am fully aware of what a Beardie NEEDS, I was just looking into what some of you have learned from experience that your Beardies LIKED. I have a bit of experience with them, as I worked at Petco for about a year, so I know what I'm getting into and the basic outline of thier care. I'll keep the heat at about 75°F. It's tropical freshwater. I haven't set it up yet; I'm trying to decide what fish to put in. Here's my current plan: 10 Zebra Danios 7-8 Harlequin Rasboras 4 Otocinclus Catfish 10+ Ghost Shrimp 6-10 of some sort of tetra (depending on size). Possibly Neons, Glowlights, Buenos Aires, or Ember. Also, can someone recommend some kind of larger fish (2-3 inch) that isn't a gourami or an angelfish? Resolved Question: Winging it? Cycling aquarium...?

I just ordered a 5 gallon aquarium kit and I don't really know when it is supposed to come but I'm going out to buy the water condtioner, decor, gravel, and betta food on the day it comes. I'm kinda on a slight budget (ok...I'm 12 and spent most of my "fish" money at the mall) so I don't have the money for a water test kit :-O I'm going to have a betta and some shrimp in the tank when it's done cycling. Since I'm doing fishless cycling though, what is a good sorce of ammonia? I was thinking fish food but It's kinda messy :P I don't mind cleaning the tank/filter though if it gets too "cloudy" or "messy". My big problem is no stores in this town sell PURE AMMONIA! It's killing me inside and I don't know what to do about it X_x Here is what I plan on doing though for the cycling prosses; -Set up tank and stuff -Fill water 60% of the way so the filter creates a "waterfall" effect and lets more oxygen threw to help the aquarium cycle faster -keep water in mid 80s to speed up cycling prosses (I'll lower the temp to about 75 though when I add the fish) -Use fish food or something for sorce of ammonia :P I really don't know about this part :( So yea... I was thinking about just waiting a month to do a big water change and then hope for the best when I add fish. I don't have the money for a test kit (let alone one of those fancy liquid testing things). So I think winging it would be the best way to go on this. So here are my questions: **How to speed up cycling prosses (besides what I have listed)?** **How to START the cycling prosses?** **Is a month a good estimate about how long the cycling prosses will take?** **Any good tips on fin rot (from a different question I asked...Link at bottom)?** tH@X PeEpS :D http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjEAYMSB7ifVeQSb_MMTlHnsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100717200821AAksV7L more

Resolved Question: **Cycling Small Betta Tank**?

I'm buying a 5 gal betta tank on friday and it comes with everything but a heater (it's a kit). Everyone has given it pretty good reviews but I have to order it instead of going to walmart and buying it. Anyway, I want to know everything about cycling ! My mom cycled 15 gallon aquariums for about 2 days and the fish lived for about a year untill she overfead all of em O_o I also here that you should wait at least 2 weeks and then others say a month. I'm kinda confused :P Here is what I know about cycling: Set up everything and let it run for ____ days untill it has built up enough good bacteria . Do 50% or 75% water changeat end of cyling ( you test for zero ammonia, nitrate...etc) . Don't have fish in a cycling tank (some are hardy though and can survive). Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Buying used aquarium gravel?

I have a 75 gallon aquarium that I have converted into freshwater from salt, and its up and running minus the gravel. I would leave it bare but I want to put live plants in it. The gravel at the pet store is the perfect size but its way too expensive. So I looked at Lowes and the smallest they have is pea sized gravel and it's just not small enough for my taste. I am considering to buy used gravel from someone. Is this okay to do? I was thinking of just cleaning it with boiling water and perhaps un-iodized salt. In the end I might breakdown and just get the Lowes gravel. Has anyone used that kind? Does it vacuum well? more

Resolved Question: Fish Stocking For My Aquarium?

OK So ive got a 29 gallon aquarium. I'm an intermmediate aquarist so I'm not naive about fish care or anything. I've been doing this for a while. But I've got an aquarium with one Neon Dwarf Gourami (3.5 in) 3 Bosemani Rainbows (4in ea) An African Dwarf Frog (1.5in) and I plan on adding a Bamboo Shrimp (2.5 in) and an Angelfish (6 in). So this would basically max me out for the 1 inch of fish to gallon rule. The thing is, I perform weekly 30% water changes and have two water filters (Tetra Whisper 30 Gallon & Aqueon 30-45 Gallon) and have an air stone on top of that. This technically provides my aquarium 60-75 gallons filtration and provides abundant oxygen. I was seeking personal adivce as to if you believe I could add more fish, and if so how many inches of fish. Every situation is different with how you can stock an aquarium depending on the factors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! more

I will soon be getting my first Katana and I was planning to mount it above my 75 gallon aquarium. When I really started thinking about it, I thought the aquarium may injure the sword. Resolved Question: is my leopard gecko healthy?

i just got my little baby leo from pet-smart 2 days ago, and it was very feisty. it sleeps a lot though and i know they're nocturnal, but sometimes it sleeps at night too. i have a 10 gallon tank with eco carpet substrate, 2 hides (one on the cool side, one on the warm), a moist hide, a calcium dish (i saw it lick out of it once), and a little bit of water to drink. on the warm side, i have an appropriately sized under the tank heater and a lamp (that you can dim/brighten) that sits on the screen lid covering the tank. during the day, i use a 75 watt UVA bulb and during the night, i use a 75 watt infrared bulb. i use a aquarium thermometer because that's all i have, but i don't know if it measures the temperature accurately. i also mist the cage every day. when i got it at the petstore, the guy said it had just eaten some crickets and i didn't need to feed it again until 2-3 days, although i read online that you are supposed to feed babies every day. i had already skipped a day of feeding before i discovered this information and i didn't have any crickets, so i caught some wild ones and made sure there were no pesticides in the area i caught them, gut loaded them for a little over 5 hours on fluker's cricket quencher and high calcium cricket diet, and put some in the cage. at first he/she (not old enought to sex) seemed very interested and lunged at one of the crickets a couple times, but after missing both times, gave up and let the cricket hop away. i aided it and herded the cricket back over to it, then after a couple tries it was successful. it then ate another smaller cricket, but when i tried to feed another, it curled up in the corner on the warm side and went to sleep (it was the daytime so maybe that had something to do with it). is this all normal behavior? is my habitat setup right? also, can i continue to feed it wild-caught crickets as long as there are no pesticides? sorry if i am worrying too much and sorry this was so long and detailed, but i just want to be the best gecko-mom i can be. :] more

Voting Question: Brown algea in 55 gallon aquarium.?

Hey, I have a 55 gallon aquarium, with 2 filters and 2 heaters. The following fish: 1 blue and 1 opaline gourami, 5 gold barbs, 4 Albino Corydoras, 1 Golden Dojo loach (Wether loach). It has been up and running for a bit more than a month, and it only started with the gouramis and gold barbs. All the fish seem to be doing fine, and the water seems to be good, the Ph though, seems like its 7.6, not sure if thats high? Anyways, like after the month, (wich was bearly like last week) this darkish brown algea started growing on some plants, then it spread to the gravel, the decorations and to the glass!! I dont know what happened! SO like last monday, I took out like 75% of the water, while vaccuming some junk. And replaced it with new water, cleaned the glass and the decor. Could not remove the algea from the decor completley, so there was still some. The fitler cartidge had that brown algea too, so I just washed it off, and used the same filter cartidge. So I set up my tank, added the chlorine remover stuff, and set up my tank, added the fish, and everything seemed fine again, ammonia and all the other things. For two days, the tank was good again, with just the algea I could not remove showing, so thats when I bought the corys, a pleco, wich died, and got a loach instead. But the algea was already growing again!!! Today it spread again to the gravel, and the plants, its bearly going in to the glass!!. Help, how can I remove this algea!! I have 3 Actinic lights, and 1 flouracent light, is this the problem? I do have 1 growing bulb, that it already sprouted, and the plant seems like its doing fine, grows everyday!! Just please, is there a way to remove this brown algea? And why is it caused? more

Resolved Question: Question about aquarium water chanes?

Ok, so weekley water changes are confusing me!! Especially when I used the Gravel Vac! So I have some questions, and need some help!! 1. Is it bad if you do a big water change? ( I though your suppose to vacuum the gravel untill theres no more poop or food waste, but I was wrong, I heard that its normal to leave some stuff in, I also just washed out brown algea from some decor) 2. Will my fish die because of this? (since i did not know, and the tank was cycling for a month now, so I hope with this i did not ruin it and kill my fish!, I pretty much sucked out 75% of my water, left some still.) 3. Or is it Ok?? ( Since I used the same filters, just washed off algea from it, I heard that if you use the same filter, it still has bacteria in it, is this good or bad?) 4. Will these fish survive? (I heard some fish are hardy enough to survive water changes or newly set aquariums, wondering if mine are, 2 gouramis, 5 gold barbs, 1 Rubberlip pleco, 3 cory catfish) 5. Is it normal for the tank to get foggy when vacumming the gravel? ( I noticed everytime I vacum and stirt the gravel, the tank gets foggy, like the first time I set it up) Well anyways, Im not 100% I tottally killed my good bacteria, I still had like 25% old water, and added a bit of the old water to my filter. I added the chlorine remover, just for the gallons I replaced, and right after that, I put on the airstone, the two filters and two heaters. I did match the water as close as I could to the old one, and after a while, I checked my status. The pH seemed the same, around 7.6, the ammonia was safe, wich is 0, the Nitrates and Nitrites where also safe, They were also both 0 (or really close to it) The hardness was hard (wat is this for?) So everything seems ok, but I just want to make sure on everything! Any tips and help on water changes super greatly appreciated!!! I love my fish, and dont want them to die. Thanks to everyone!!! Forgot to mention, I have a 55 gallon tank. more

Resolved Question: Required Aquarium Setup?

I am getting an aquarium for my turtle and need to know what kinds of pumps, heaters, and filters i need. The whole set up is going to be half land/half water, so It wont be a full tank. Probably just 6 inches of water in a 29 or 20 long gallon tank. i was considering a 75 watt heater, but that's all i know so far. more

Resolved Question: How to Clean a Large Glass Reptile Tank?

More specifically a Corn Snake habitat. I'd read not to use bathtubs or kitchen sinks if possible. A glass tank would be hard to lug around into a bathtub anyway. The only way I could think of is the following: Do you: 1. Use a bleach or vinegar solution and scrub the sides of the tank. 2. Partially fill the tank with water. 3. Swirl it around and make sure to use a cup on the sides to rinse. 3. Then siphon it until it no longer smells like bleach or vinegar. 4. Dry thoroughly. Is that what you do? Resolved Question: 55-75 Gallon Tank for a Corn Snake?

Corn Snake Vivarium or Terrarium Questions: 1. Most people like 40 gallon breeder tanks, but would a 55 or 75 gallon glass aquarium tank be okay? 2. Would getting a baby Corn Snake and putting it in a tank "it can grow into" stress it out? 3. If so, how about blocking off the excess size of a tank with a temporary partition, then gradually increasing the size as it grows? I hate the expense of upgrading from tank to tank, but I already have a 10 gallon which I could start a baby Corn Snake in if worse comes to worse. more
