Voting Question: Should my small aquarium filter be making bubbles in less than 24 hours after setup?
I purchased a small 1 1/2 gallon acrylic tank from walmart yesterday for my daughter's beta fish. I also bought a heater and it came with a small cartridge filter and a light. We followed instructions and were hoping to put the fish in this evening but this afternoon bubbles starting coming up and out of the filter. Is this normal?

moreResolved Question: How to move my Betta Fish to new Tank?
Okay, so I've had great success here asking questions, so here I go again asking for your lovely peoples help! :)
I've had my Betta for a month now, he's in an Aquaeon Mini Bow 5.0 (5 Gallon) Acrylic Tank with a small heater, AquaClear 20 Filter, and some aquarium Gravel, Silk Plants and 2 small Caves.
Now My little sister just bought a Betta, and to avoid her keeping him in a 1 gallon Closet, I offered to give her my tank, and upgrade mine to a 10 Gallon Glass Aquarium that they sell at Petsmart. A very standard setup, nothing crazy.
Now here are my numerous questions/concerns. I understand that the 10 gallon will no longer be cycled as I will be starting from scratch again, however I plan on carrying over my Old filter which has its bacterial Colonies all in order, is this okay?
I also Plan on bringing over some of the silk plants, with possibly getting new ones. However I've always wanted to experiment with real plants. Yet i'm afraid of rotting, and parasites, and all that jazz. If I were to try and incorporate live plants, what precautions would I need to do rid them of parasites/disease before adding them.
Turbo (my fish) will probably not like moving after getting comfy. But I feel like this will be better for him and the other fish. Plus he's doubling his home!
Also, Are glass tanks not as nice to have as Acrylic? i know glass is cheaper, and I did some research on the two. But I wanted to see what other fish owners had to say.
Thanks!!!Sorry I forgot to mention! Filter is good for 5-20 gallon tanks with adusting flow. So its set at lowest now, but in my 10 gallon tank it should work fine!

moreVoting Question: Aquarium lighting for a 40 gallon?
I ordered a 40 gallon acrylic tank which will be used for a tropical planted community tank.
At this moment, I do not have a clue on the lighting systems for aquarium since I am totally new to this.
The dimension of the tank is 36" x 15" x 16" as in the specification.
I bought two packs of total 10 seeds of aquarium plants.
One package listed -
Hybird
Aponogeton
Bulbs
(Hey, now I start thinking maybe this "Hybird Aponogeton Bulb" is one same plant? I thought it was 3 different types at first)
The other one -
Nymphaea
Lilly Bulbs
I also plan to buy -
Java Fern x2
Wisteria x2
Water Sprite x2
Hornwort
The aquarium tank specification said - include a 24" UL listed fluorescent light fixture (bulb not included)
Some reviews said the tank I ordered will come with a broken cover.
So my questions would be, what do I do with the lighting system? (as for I have no clue what to buy, or even how the lighting system will fit with the hood/cover)
Direct links to what I need to buy please. (just a bulb? I hope!) And I need to know if the lighting system itself is a hood or it fits into the hood lol...since I saw all the expensive (in the hundreds of dollars) lighting system looks like a hood/cover themselves. Since I am totally new to this, please understand my confusion.
Please keep the cost low while keep the sufficient lighting for both the plants growth and overall aquarium appearance purposes. I already spent way more than I should and I haven't even ordered any fish yet. :)The tank I ordered is a Seaclear 40 gallon tank

It's my husband's 30th birthday next month and I hope to buy him an aquarium as he used to keep tropical fish tank, but hasn't for the last few years I know he'd like to start back up again. This way he can get the tank on his birthday and start cycling it as I would't know where to start.
My question is, what tank should I get? I know he wouldn't expect a tank like his previous one (a metre long monster!) so I need something small and not cheap looking that will house some guppies (male/female) neon tetras and a cat fish so definitely not a big tank, just good quality. I know the likes of the fluval edge (which I really like) aren't great as they're too small, so what size would I need to keep the fish I know he'd like?
I've been to a few independent stores, and petsathome etc, and they all seem to have quite similar tanks - some do look quite plastic-y and I don't like the biorbs because of the acrylic in them.
Thank you for your advice!

Okay, so I have these two little red-bellied pacu, and they're about 3 inches each... (not even big enough to eat little feeder fish). I currently have them in one of those XL acrylic pet holders from Petco with a small cheap filter that attaches to your air pump.
They are pretty content in this approximately 5-6 gallon holder for now, but I was wondering what type of tank I should buy for these little guys?
Now, I have full knowledge that red-bellied pacu get to be approximately 2-3 feet when they're fully grown and live for over 15 years. Please don't recommend me getting something ridiculous like a 5,000 gallon aquarium for them and don't tell me to return them to the store (ect...).
I was wondering what I could do to best suit these beautiful fishes needs within the limit of keeping them in my house.
Also, what other fish work well with these feisty fish?
Thanks for your help! :)

moreResolved Question: Betta Fish: new filter and heater, water changes, HELP PLEASE!?
Okay, so my 2.5 tank I got had a minibow whisper filter that was a bit too strong front my male crowntail betta, so I went and bought a new one! The filter is a "Tom Aquarium Products: Mini Internal Filter"
The back says: Complete 3-stage filteration-mechanical, chemical and biological. Foam cartride quickly traps unwanted waste material while the premium carbon removes other pollutants and odors. Choice of spray bar attachent or flow diffuses promotes optimum surface water movement. Attaches easily to wall with 5 sution cups. Voltage is 12V) for safe operation in water. Adjustable water flow up to 45 gallons per hour.
It says for 1 to 5 gallon aquariums!
Now I also got a heater! The tempreture of our house stays around 74-78 degrees, because it fluctuates so much. The heater I got is a Hydor Mini Heater for 2-5 gallon aquariums.
Here's the specs:
FOR MINI 7,5 W
Size: 5,7 x 2,3 inches Aquarium: 2 gal, temp increase: approx 5 F Aquarium: 5 gal temp increase: approx 4 F
FOR MINI 15 W
Size: 6,2 x 2,4 inches, Aquarium: 5 gal, temp increase: approse 5 F Aquarium: 10 gal, temp increase: approx 4 F
It says that the difference between the amibient room temp and the aquarium temp. reached by using MINI can vary due to location and lighting. Always check water tempreture with a thermometer.
I don't have a themomert....but I put the aquarium on an old TV shelf that has a shelve over it, so it's fairly shaded...
Will this heater and filter be safe in my tank for my betta? :) Any tips, etc etc etc would be great with these products! I changed the filter because the other filter (Mini Bow Whisper) made too strong of a current...My betta had to constantly swim and he hid often behind the filter itself...where the current wasn't as strong. So I though changing it may be better.
Also! I have painted nails (acrylic nails with black polish) so I'm iffy about putting my hands in the water....My dad got me some latex gloves (The big yellow ones people clean with) that have cloth inside....and he got me some rubber, doctors gloves. Are these safe to use when adding and cleaning my tank?
ONE MORE THING! ^^; When I do my water changes, I usually allow my water to sit for 24 hours with dechlorinator drops in it....He is on maracyn at the moment for finrot...do I still need to continue with my water procedures or change a half gallon? How much do I add for the water change? Do I do a full tank change with the maracyn or....? I'm confused. I only add 1/4 of a packet per day, but do I need to do a water change with the maracyn? I'm confused on my water changes for a 2.5 gallon tank.....This IS my first time using a tank so....I'm very cautious....
Thanks so much!For the 'house much do I add to a half gallon' was referring to the medicine ^^;I, again, would like to point out that the 2.5 gallon is perfect for him...it's a lot bigger than I thought....he's the ONLY fish I have...there are no others, and there are 2 plants, fake, and two bulbs growing. My parent's will not allow for a 5 gallon, which what I perfered, and the pet store said it wasn't needed, which is why I ended up with the 2.5 in the first place...^^;

moreResolved Question: Algae growth in acrylic tanks vs. glass tanks?
I had a 50 gallon acrylic tank that kept growing algae REALLY bad. I tried so many things to control it and ended up killing almost all my fish. I had a 60 gallon in my garage just waiting for me to do something with it. I finally set it up, using all the same stuff from the acrylic tank<filter, water conditioner,etc.>. Its been set up now for a month and I have had no problems with even a glimpse of algae. The differences in the tanks, other than glass/acrylic, is I have black rocks now as opposed to the white rocks from before, I don't have plants in the glass tank yet, and the tanks are in different areas of the house. The acrylic tank was set up in our living room on carpet, away from most windows/outside light. The glass tank is set up in our kitchen on tile with 3 big windows in the area. I ALWAYS have had trouble with algae in the acrylic tank. About 2 - 3 weeks after set up I started seeing algae growth. And now a about a month into having the glass tank set up I see no algae in it at all. So my questions are : 1. Why would the growth of algae vary so greatly, being that it grew wild in an almost dark room<acrylic>, and not growing at all in a room with lots of sunlight<glass>? 2. Could the reason be the acrylic/glass difference or could the plants have caused it? I had Hornwart and an Aquarium Lily. Only used fertilizer 1 time then started seeing the algae and did a water change. I tried that algae fix stuff for a while.. it seemed to do the trick. But then it all came back like 10X worse. Hope someone can help me figure this out. Thinking of turning the acrylic tank into some other kind of animal cage. Thanks a bunch!2 36" 25w fluorescent was on the acrylic tank. It was on almost 8 hrs a day<needed for the plants>. On the glass tank I have the same light fixture except i added the 3rd 25w bulb and i have seen no algae, where with just 2 bulbs algae seemed to thrive in the acrylic tank.
sunlight was in my descriptionoh and i have a plecco, he did not eat all the algae. there was way to much and it grew very very fast.

moreVoting Question: Goldfish and Neon Red Moons (A.K.A. Platy Fish, Palties, Moon Fish)?
I have a 50 gal. acrylic tank. It currently has 4 common fantil goldfish in it. Common fantails were developed in America. They are the only fancy tailed breed that truly can compeet with faster single tailed varieties in aquariums and ponds. They are NOT Ryukins (also known as Japanese fantails). Common fantails are the smallest breed of goldfish, eventhough some have been crossed with ryukins. Ryukins tend to be larger and slower than common fantails. Common fantails are sold as tiny 1 in. fish in stores. But they will be 4 to 6 inches when fully grown. Although there are some sources that say the record for this breed was 10 in. Ryukins on average can reach 8 to 10 inches. No word on records for this breed. And other breeds of goldfish can be even larger. The fantils I have are between 1 and 2in. They are all common fantails. They say all glodfish are fine with other species, as long as they are not small enugh for them to eat. Or slow enough for goldfish to catch. And I am well aware of the fact even one fancy gold fish needs 10 gal. of water to be happy and even one single tailed variety needs at least 20 gal. to be happy. I also know each additional goldfish (wheather it is a fancy tail or a single tail) needs at least an additional 10 gallpns to be happy. And I know goldfish need a tank rather than a bowl. And that the tank should be a long tank rather than a high one for all goldfish to give them the swimming room enough to be happy. That is why I got a long 50 gal. tank. And according to what I have learned my setup is fine for the goldfish I have.
The question I have is in reguard to anther spcies of fish I decided to place with thesegoldfish. I recently ordered 2 red neon moon fish, a member of the large and growing familly of moon fish.
Here is the little of what I know of the red neon moon fish and platies. Moon fish are evidenly a breed of platy fish. I got the red neons because a very good web site on fish stated Variatus could be placed with goldfish. I heard from various other sites this species is the same as a moon fish. Perhaps I got confused somewhere. However, reguardless of any possible confusion, I have two red neon moon fish on the way. The red neons can grow to be 2 to 3 in. They are live bearers. They say these small fish are peacful arround other fish and are hardy. They say palties are fast fish too. They also have simillar enough diets to goldfish that they can share some of the same foods. Just monitor them when you feed them to be sure the fish get their share of the propper flake foods. Palties evidenly have small mouths. And because of this they should only be fed flake foods for tropical fish. Although they, like the goldfish, can also eat small freezdried items and live plant items. Freeze dried Blood worms, freeze dried brine shrimp, blanched lettuce, and blanched spinach are asll items that can b fedo both palties and goldfish. Palties also enjoy planted aquariums with some swimming space, just as goldfish do. And goldfish swimm at all leves of the tank, so do platies. And I hear both species can survie in a compatible temperature range of 75 to 78 degrees.
Yet there are some things no one told me about when I ordered the beautiful little red neon moon fish. Moon fish are evidenly a member of the same familly as platies. And well, platies can have baies when they are no more than 2 months old! I have also heard they can change thier sex!! So having two or more platies in the same tank can lead to baby fish (something I was not aware of when I purchased the recomended pair I ordered. OOPS!!! My bad.). Furthermore, I discovered palties can have 250+ babies in one brood!!! And they can have one brood every month!!!! (Oh No! Argh!!!! Too . . . Many . . . Fish!) I have heard you can adopt out the babies, sell them (or donate them) to pet stores, or donate them to the science department at schools. They seem to do well in outdoor ponds in warm climates, where larger fish an natural predators eat them naturally (which helps controll their population). Ihave even heard they cab be used as feeder fish. Sort of like the fate of many live brine shrimp that are fed to fish. Using these beautiful little moon fish as feeder fish is a sad fate. But concindering there can be 250+ babies EVERY month of EVERY year . . . It may be they only way to controll their popullations, if no one eles will take them (or has room and money enough to take them). If the fish I ordered survive and have ospring, I will do what I can to ensure their survival and find someone to take them. Just as I will the original pair of them. They are beautiful little fish. They would be fine if kept by themselves, or in a tank with other fish that are not platies, swordtails, or Variatus. Perhaps guppies and tetras could work well with red noen moon fish, scince they too are small and generally peaceful with other fish species. (But do not take my word for it on this info. here. I am new to platies and moon fis

Hi, I have over 7 years of experience with aquariums. Right now I have a problem I can't seem to solve, but I have an idea. I have a 125 gallon aquarium and about a month ago the light bulb that came with the hood died, so I had to buy a replacement bulb. Ever since I put that replacement bulb in, there has been a green coating of algae on all the rocks (including gravel) and the acrylic sides of the aquarium. I have a UV Sterilizer in the aquarium, so I thought that would kill the over growth but it did not. So I bought another bulb for the aquarium that did not say it was good for plants, and it's doing the same thing. Is there any way I can stop this? I don't keep the aquarium light on for more then 6-7 hours a day. HELP. Also, can too much algae harm the fish?
Thank you
moreResolved Question: Have you ever used a kit to get acrylic tank scratches out?
I have an acrylic aquarium with some scratches from the previous owners corals. I have freshwater fish in it now, and its filled up. I can visibly see the scratches when I'm looking at the tank and it stresses me out rather then making me relax and happy. How does an acrylic tank scratch remover work? Do I have to totally drain the water to do it? Does it involve chemicals? Or can I use it while the tank is fully loaded, so to speak.
Thanks!
moreResolved Question: 50-55 gal aquarium for 4" angel fish - 15"x36" vs. 12"x48", which is better?
I've got 4 angel fish in a 40-gal aquarium right now and they have clearly outgrown it. I'm going to upgrade to a 50-55 gal aquarium. But I have two acrylic tanks I'm looking at, one is 15"x36", the other is not as deep much somewhat longer, 12"x48". Both are 20" high.
What is better for the fish?
1. The tank that's not quite as wide, but a few inches deeper to the back, giving them a decent swim range in all directions, or
2. The tank that's not as deep but much wider, giving them a longer swim range in one direction, but not as much range back to front?
(Ideally I would love to get a much larger tank like a 100 gallon 60"x18" for example, but over the past 4 years I've been progressing from an original 10-gal (with 2 gold fish), to a 30-gal (mix of tetras and guppies), to the current 40-gal (just the 4 angels, that started as 1" and are now 4" each), and I'm not too keen on growing it too much larger all at once. I'll get there... but just not now. And yes, I fully agree, larger tanks actually take less work to maintain.)
Would love to hear from experienced aquarium owners about the size options and which seems to work better for fish of this size.
Thanks! There actually IS a formula, that generally says 1" of fish per gallon, but I think it's up to 1" per 3 gallons for more territorial fish.
One of them is actually 6" big as has established herself as the boss... and the other 3 are between 3" and 4". They are all a little territorial and have their spats.
I was thinking that maybe the longer tank would give them more security for territoriality... if big momma is on one side and the next big one has declared her territory 3' away on the opposite side, they'd be happier than being 12" apart.
Based on the old saying, fences make for good neighbors, I wonder if they make fences for fish tanks?
LOL.
moreResolved Question: I need to know if my Betta Fish aquarium setup is acceptable before I add a live male betta. ?
For the last 5 years, I've done a lot of research on aquariums, betta fish, plants, substrate, etc and everything I have read has been contradicted by at least two other sources! Here is what I've pieced together and would love to get some feedback on if this is the best method. I don't simply want to OWN a betta fish; I want to be a really good lifetime home for him.
I have purchased a 3 gallon Tetra acrylic aquarium with a small Whisper low current filter and LED light. I have had my water tested and discovered that it does not need to be treated (only allowed to sit 24 hours) but I've still added the recommended dose of treatment liquid formulated for Betta fish.
The tank has sat 24 hours with the filter off and will be another 24 hours with the filter on.
I am going to add small glass pellets for substrate (I am washing them and running an old panty hose stocking over each to check for snags before adding them). I would like to add a live Anubias plant tied to a chunk of driftwood both as an ornament and as a hiding place for the fish.
I would ultimately introduce two small snails to the aquarium, but I am waiting to make sure that I don't get any accidentally with the live plant. The betta would still live essentially alone; no other fish or anything.
For care, I was considering feeding two prepared pellets of a manufactured betta fish food and then an evening feeding alternating various frozen "live" foods (I've noticed that petco has a great selection).
I adore live crabs, but I don't think one would coinhabit safely with the betta so I have a tiny plastic one on order. :)
For cleaning, I am planning on removing the fish to a bowl with around half of his own water, then cleaning the remaining half of the tank with the glass pellets to make everything super clean before adding him and his own water back in and filling the remaining space with treated water.
Is there anything I am missing or need to improve on? I just want to have a really good plan before actually getting a fish. Thank you!!
moreResolved Question: I am getting a 6 gallon tank. Is about 2 ghost shrimp and 4 guppies okay?
I am getting an Eclipse System 6-Gallon Aquarium Tank. Some of the stats are it's acrylic, has fluorescent lighting, and an integrated top mounted three stage filtration system. I'm also not planning on getting a heater any time soon, if at all. I would prefer not to. I would like to get some ghost shrimp (they seem pretty cool and easy to take care of also don't need the heater), and some guppies (apparently ghost shrimp get along with livebearers such as guppies, and also small tetras, rasboras, and small danios).
From what I've read, ghost shrimp are social and I should get a couple. I was thinking two since my tank is on the smaller side. I've read anywhere from 3-6 guppies in my size tank, and also to have 2-3 females per male.
So is 2 ghost shrimp and 4 guppies (1 male and 3 female) okay? I'll have my top dwellers and ground dwellers. I think it'd look nice.
And also, what other things should I have in my tank? Should I (or can i even) put in live plants? Do they like to hide in anything? Etc?
Also, I'm aware of the whole breeding thing. I'm planning on seeing if my local fish store is interested in buying the guppies. I've read many things about them doing that. If not, it's going to change things a bit (all females??) but hopefully that works out.
Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot! =)Hey Ianab, thanks for your answer =)
But will that many male guppies together be violent? Or will they be okay together? I actually would prefer getting all males since they are much more pretty, but I heard they can be aggressive?
moreResolved Question: I have a 45 gallon aquarium meant for marine fish. Where to start on making it a reef tank?
Hi there. I recently came by the biggest steal of my life (so far). :)
PLEASE read ALL of this for best info
For FREE, from my aunt, I have acquired a 45 gallon marine acrylic tank, with teak stand, a FluVal 304 canister filter with all necessities, a fully functional undergravel filter with 2 (very) strong power heads, an Aquaclear 50 gallon hang on filter, and a heater that works perfectly with its tank size. It even comes with a plastic hood (more details in a bit) and multiple air pumps, tubes, and air stones.
This acrylic tanks top, liek most acrylics have the folded in top, with a large slit on the back for filtartion mechanisms, a hole for wiring powerheads/heater, and two large, divided openings in the middle. On these two holes a plastic hood with a single 20w (lame..) freash water flourescent light is mounted.
My question is this. This tank was meant to be used for a marine tank. With the tools already at hand, what other equipment/test kits do I need to get this started and an estimate in price?
(btw i have a gravitometer already)
outside of obvious live rock/sand etc. what are the basic things I should buy/replace. I would like to find out if there is a stronger marine aqua light for this oddly shaped tank. (rounded front corners)
Its dimensions are:
exactly 3ft or 36in in length
15in deep
and 16in tall
ANY information on this would be an amazing help. I will pay attention to details in the answers and will be sure to grand a best answer!
THANK YOU!!
Done two years of marine aquarium research.
Dont live in a hot place- fog city San Francisco. 70 degress is a HEAT WAVEPROTEIN SKIMMER NECESSARY FOR THIS SIZE?

moreResolved Question: will this work as a fish tank?
My friend just gave me a 20g acrylic tank but he used it as a terrarium and i am not too sure if it will be safe to turn it into an aquarium. What i mostly would like to know is will it hold water safely, how i would clean it out if it can hold water, and if this is a stupid idea.
Thank you
moreResolved Question: What do you do about Algae in aquarium?
Hiya. We have had aquariums for over 30 years. Have maintained them with live plants, good lighting, etc. Trops and goldfish. This past Christmas we 'treated' ourselves to a new tank, first new one in 20 years. This tank is a bowfront acrylic. the one other tank we still have is glass, probably 20 years old. Both have live plants, both have plant lighting. Both get algae growth. The bowfront does get indirect morning light if I forget to draw the blinds. It's on the other side of the room from the windows, but the morning light will cross the room. the problem is the algae. While the glass tank gets what looks like the same type of algae--starts as green spots, covers the sides--it wipes off easily with a terry cloth. the bowfront--it sticks like it's welded on. Is it the acrylic? How do you deal with this problem? We have used the recommended brushes which are not supposed to scratch the surface--there does not APPEAR to be scratches, and the surface feels very smooth once the algae is removed. the last time we used a soft abrasive pad that is used on glass range tops. It wasn't easy to remove, but it came off OK. Now, a couple of months later, the algae is back and I dread having to clean off the sides again, as the job is time-consuming and difficult. what do you acrylic tank owners use to clean off algae? Is there a recommended product that will prohibit algae growth and not harm the live plants or the fish?
We've had tanks a long time, as I said, but never had such a problem dealing with algae! Before I throw the tank out in the yard, please offer any other methods of cleaning this tank. Thank you! OlddocThanks S-moore. We have 3 chinese algae eaters, and while they keep the rocks clean, the algae on the sides has them baffled. We never tried shrimp. Guess we will!
moreResolved Question: Aquarium for my Betta fish?
I bought a betta fish in a small fish bowl and I can't stand it. I hate when people keep fish it bowls so this is a temporary thing until I can get him better conditions. I don't know much about caring for fish but I want to get him a tank that is at least 2 gallons. I was looking at this one from walmart that is 2.5 gallons. It's meant for goldfish, I believe, but is this okay for a betta?

How does the air pump/filter work?

Say you have two fish tanks of equal size, and shape, but one is glass and one is acrylic. Which is cheaper? So apparently acrylic scratches extremely easily. Got it. Noted.
moreResolved Question: i want a custom made fish aquarium to be installed in my home.?
I want the width to be about 8ft, Hieght about 8 ft, and length about 30 ft. Basically this aquaruim will be from floor to cieling reaching out about the length of my whole wall. this tank will be about 3,000 gallons, and be built into the wall and cieling/floor to give a built in look. What the question is, i dont know should i hire this proffessional company called "Acrylic tank manufacturers" to do the job or should i hire my cousin? My cousin is a drafter and works for a company skilled in custom furniture. He has made fish aquariums around 200 gallons, but has never attempted a project this large before. Acrylic tank manufacturers will charge me around 50,000. My cousin will charge me around 35,000. What would be the best choice?

I have seen the prices of custom size aquariums and thought it might be cheaper to do it myself. Does anyone know where I can get the glass or acrylic to construct a fish tank? Can I just get it at Home Depot or something?I thought just about all glass (as long as the thickness and supports are right) can withstand water.
