Voting Question: Fluval Osaka 260 - no lid issue?

Hi All, I'm new in this forum and quite new fish keeper as well. I want to upgrade to a bigger tank now and was thinking about getting Fluval Osaka, as the design is stunning and I simply love it. The only problem I can think of is lack of the lid. Does anyone have any experience of that? I'm not worried about fishes jumping out etc - what worries me is the high level of water evaporation due to open top and the amount of pollution that might get into the water (dust etc.). I've read that some people were trying to fix it by ordering cut to size sheets of acrylic or other plastic materials - but does it really work? If the length of the aquarium is more than 100 cm - I’m worried that the plastic might bend under its own weight. I’d appreciate any advice. Many thanks. more

Voting Question: Can I put a clay figure underwater for a long period of time?

I have this little glass tank filled with water (there isn't any fish in it) and it has 'river rocks' and a ceramic fish in it, but now I'm redoing the decorations and I had a good idea for it, but I need to know whether I can put a clay figure in the water without anything happening to it. Its made of sculpy clay and painted with acrylic paint--will anything happen to it being underwater for a, most likely, long period of time? Thanks for answers! more

Resolved Question: Setting up a Cichlid Aquarium- Need Help!?

About two weeks ago, I bought a 40-gallon aquarium that came with a working hang-on-the-back filter, heater, ornaments and gravel. The gravel is pretty coarse: about 1/2"-diameter polished rocks. I set up a decent fish tank for a while, with many fake plants and cute ornaments, and let it sit for a week. Then I bought six guppies: two males, four females. The day after that, two females died. I was worried about my future guppy tank, but after doing some intensive research, I decided that I should have made a Cichlid tank to take advantage of how much my aquarium can hold. I read that guppies were good for starting the cycle for a Cichlid tank, though, so I was happy I had still made that decision, even if it was for another reason. I changed the decorations in my tank with the guppies still in it, so now I have a good Cichlid tank layout, with many rocks, that are stacked or formed into little caves or crevices. I have one fake plant behind the rocks in each corner. However, I really want to make this Cichlid tank as perfect as possible, so I have a decent amount of issues: -My current tank is 40-gallon, the temperature is 79-80 degrees, and the pH is 7.6 1. I am aware that the pH needs to be raised to 8.0-8.2, but I don't know the best way to do that safely without harming my guppies or anything. Also, the guppies can't really handle a pH that high, so when would be a good time to do it? 2. The guppies have been in for 2 days now. How long should I wait until the tank is fully cycled? 3. I fear that my gravel is much too coarse for Cichlids, who like to dig around alot. I want to buy a new substrate, preferably sand, but I really don't want to take out all the gravel on the bottom and then pour sand into the water to have it float around and cloud the water with fish in it. Would it be possible to put sand on the gravel? I don't have eggcrate on the bottom, but I feel like the coarse gravel supports the rocks well and protects the acrylic from them. 4. To raise my pH naturally, should I buy Aragonite sand, reef sand, etc.? What would be something that I could most likely put on my gravel and would raise the pH to about 8.0-8.2? I also have some dried coral, but I don't know if it will manage to raise the pH enough and then buffer it. If pH-raising sand is the better idea, please post a link or something on the Petco or Petsmart website (so that I can easily go buy it at the store. Also, note that I don't buy my fish at Petco, I go to a LFS). 5. What would I do with my guppies when my Cichlid environment is completely ready? Are they likely to get eaten, or could they co-exist with the first pair I put in? (They almost always hang at the top of the tank) 6. Is my filtration sufficient? I would like to spend as little as possible, but if better or additional filtration is necessary, please let me know. I'm sorry for the long and horrifyingly specific questions, but I've had a lot of problems with fish tanks, and this is my first one with bigger fish, so I'm not ready to cut any corners anymore. Any help with any of these questions is truly and deeply appreciated- Thank you in advance! If more filtration is necessary, I probably would need something inside the tank, since 2 hang-on-the-back filters seems excessive.Forgot to specify- I'm going to get African Cichlids: most likely lake Malawi ones.Kenyi fish are what I'm aiming for as a start, followed by anything that can eventually accompany it and give color diversity in the tank. I haven't managed to find a compatibility chart, list or anything that can tell me compatible species of lake Malawi fish that will live in harmony. My understanding is that most Mbuna fish are able to live together, if the ratio of females to males is at least 4 to 1, and if the males are of different species and color than each other. If I'm wrong, then I'll ask a question about Mbune compatibility.Mbuna* my mistake more

Resolved Question: How do you clean an acrylic tank on the outside from water stains?

I have a 14 gallon and one beautiful active common goldfish who is pretty big now. Yes, I am getting a bigger tank as soon as I can but I have no lid currently and he likes to do skids in the water and send water flying out everywhere several times a day. Does anyone know how I can clean the water stains from the outside of the tank to make it look clear again? I use these fish wipes sometimes that work exceptionally well but I have no more right now and I've used towels, paper towels, tissue paper, and my hand but anything else just smears and makes it looks terrible. What can I clean it with? I know no chemicals, obviously. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Should my small aquarium filter be making bubbles in less than 24 hours after setup?

I purchased a small 1 1/2 gallon acrylic tank from walmart yesterday for my daughter's beta fish. I also bought a heater and it came with a small cartridge filter and a light. We followed instructions and were hoping to put the fish in this evening but this afternoon bubbles starting coming up and out of the filter. Is this normal? more

Resolved Question: How to move my Betta Fish to new Tank?

Okay, so I've had great success here asking questions, so here I go again asking for your lovely peoples help! :) I've had my Betta for a month now, he's in an Aquaeon Mini Bow 5.0 (5 Gallon) Acrylic Tank with a small heater, AquaClear 20 Filter, and some aquarium Gravel, Silk Plants and 2 small Caves. Now My little sister just bought a Betta, and to avoid her keeping him in a 1 gallon Closet, I offered to give her my tank, and upgrade mine to a 10 Gallon Glass Aquarium that they sell at Petsmart. A very standard setup, nothing crazy. Now here are my numerous questions/concerns. I understand that the 10 gallon will no longer be cycled as I will be starting from scratch again, however I plan on carrying over my Old filter which has its bacterial Colonies all in order, is this okay? I also Plan on bringing over some of the silk plants, with possibly getting new ones. However I've always wanted to experiment with real plants. Yet i'm afraid of rotting, and parasites, and all that jazz. If I were to try and incorporate live plants, what precautions would I need to do rid them of parasites/disease before adding them. Turbo (my fish) will probably not like moving after getting comfy. But I feel like this will be better for him and the other fish. Plus he's doubling his home! Also, Are glass tanks not as nice to have as Acrylic? i know glass is cheaper, and I did some research on the two. But I wanted to see what other fish owners had to say. Thanks!!!Sorry I forgot to mention! Filter is good for 5-20 gallon tanks with adusting flow. So its set at lowest now, but in my 10 gallon tank it should work fine! more

Resolved Question: Why does my common goldfish swim around his tank like he's going crazy?

It's like he wants out or something and I know for a fact that he is not diseased or sick at all. I give him a specialized nutrition that you can't buy at the store which makes him a super-fish so he's extremely healthy but he still swims around the tank back and fourth back and forth really fast. He will stay in one spot and like a bee trying to get out from behind glass, he will move right left right left fast in the corners and sides of the tank. I know that fish don't like sudden change of light and that they get spooked easily but he will do this for hours ignoring me if I'm talking to him even. What's his deal? I have him in a 12 gallon acrylic tank and there is a kind of large bottom feeder in there with him. The bottom feeder fish has grown in size and always tries to suck on him and he doesn't like it one bit. Do you think this could be the cause? Is the bottom feeder fish driving him crazy and maybe stressing him out too much? I'm going to get rid of the bottom feeder soon anyway. Thanks for anyone's feedback. more

Resolved Question: Cleaning Coralline Algae off Acrylic tank?

I have an acrylic tank that is totally covered with coralline algae. It is currently in use and I have been trying to scrape the algae off with various scrapers and credit cards. But I don't have much time to work on this project and it seems to grow faster than I can remove it. :( I read that I could soak the tank with a water vinegar solution to clean it. If I emptied out the tank to do this, how long would I have to soak it for? What if I soaked it with undiluted vinegar? Could This be a one day project? I just want to be able to look at my fish again. Also is it enough to rinse the tank after I did the treatment or do I have to do anything else to it to make it safe for my fish to go back in? Anybody who has tried this, please let me know how you did it and what the result looked like. This is a Reef tank and no algae eater will eat coralline algae. more

Resolved Question: Aquarium lighting for a 40 gallon?

I ordered a 40 gallon acrylic tank which will be used for a tropical planted community tank. At this moment, I do not have a clue on the lighting systems for aquarium since I am totally new to this. The dimension of the tank is 36" x 15" x 16" as in the specification. I bought two packs of total 10 seeds of aquarium plants. One package listed - Hybird Aponogeton Bulbs (Hey, now I start thinking maybe this "Hybird Aponogeton Bulb" is one same plant? I thought it was 3 different types at first) The other one - Nymphaea Lilly Bulbs I also plan to buy - Java Fern x2 Wisteria x2 Water Sprite x2 Hornwort The aquarium tank specification said - include a 24" UL listed fluorescent light fixture (bulb not included) Some reviews said the tank I ordered will come with a broken cover. So my questions would be, what do I do with the lighting system? (as for I have no clue what to buy, or even how the lighting system will fit with the hood/cover) Direct links to what I need to buy please. (just a bulb? I hope!) And I need to know if the lighting system itself is a hood or it fits into the hood lol...since I saw all the expensive (in the hundreds of dollars) lighting system looks like a hood/cover themselves. Since I am totally new to this, please understand my confusion. Please keep the cost low while keep the sufficient lighting for both the plants growth and overall aquarium appearance purposes. I already spent way more than I should and I haven't even ordered any fish yet. :)The tank I ordered is a Seaclear 40 gallon tank http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753079 more

Resolved Question: Fish tank: Do i get a new tank or swap my fish?

I have a 'Baby Bio Ord' which i think hold 15 ltrs of water anf i have 2 fantail goldfish - 1 which is no biger than a small childs fist and the other appears to be slightly bigger. I also have 1 plecostomus (pleccy/catfish) I woke up this morning to find a tank full of eggs for the first time having had all three fish for nearly two years. Recently my partner and i figured we may need a bigger fish tank - but we don't have the room! hence why we bought the bio orb - its basically an acrylic stylish bowl. We've talked about giving them away and having small fish --- which seem pointless to look at, we talked about getting a new tank ---but can't afford it also we dont really have the space. Plus, since having this orb we're amazed at how easy it is to clean. Other tanks i had in the past as a child you'd have to scoop out the gravel etc. But this one is so easy!! I feel terrible for even thinking of giving them to my nan who has a pond or seeing if the pet shop will do a swap..especially as they have surprised me with eggs today. Fact is we still like having fish! What do we do? We're worried they're getting too big.I bought the orb from pets world then about 1-2 weeks after setting it up the guy said to come back to get fish.... he then sold me ...''''the none fish expect'''' 2 fan tailed gold fish. As for the pleccy I grew up with my dad having them in the house. We had a hot and cold tank - and had pleccy's in both, not said it is ok or that i'm right but they sem to do ok in either - or did for us. The guy in the pet store again didnt seem to stress any problems to us. He helps keep the tank clean. more

Resolved Question: What fish tank should I buy as a present for my husband who used to keep tropical fish?

It's my husband's 30th birthday next month and I hope to buy him an aquarium as he used to keep tropical fish tank, but hasn't for the last few years I know he'd like to start back up again. This way he can get the tank on his birthday and start cycling it as I would't know where to start. My question is, what tank should I get? I know he wouldn't expect a tank like his previous one (a metre long monster!) so I need something small and not cheap looking that will house some guppies (male/female) neon tetras and a cat fish so definitely not a big tank, just good quality. I know the likes of the fluval edge (which I really like) aren't great as they're too small, so what size would I need to keep the fish I know he'd like? I've been to a few independent stores, and petsathome etc, and they all seem to have quite similar tanks - some do look quite plastic-y and I don't like the biorbs because of the acrylic in them. Thank you for your advice! more

Resolved Question: Is it unhealthy for a Betta to flare up continually?

I just got him 2 weeks ago. He's in a 10 gallon tank with a heater, filter etc. But he seems to be flaring up all the time. Very rarely can I catch him fins relaxed. There's nothing around his tank that he should feel threatened by/that he has to threaten. He's the only fish in the tank(as he's very aggressive one) so I'm confused. Is he just seeing his reflection in the tank(it's not glass but that acrylic stuff I guess you call it). His tank is also an oval shape. And he'll even flare up at me(in the store this was the reason I picked him). I was just wondering if it's bad for him to flare up so much? What can I do to try and stop him from doing it so much?I haven't done anything to make him mad(that I know of anyway). I add Betta drops and I don't change his water(partially) but once a week. Resolved Question: Can you help me get out of a seriously messed up tank with sick fish?

Ok, so let's start with the basics. I have an acrylic 12 gallon tank with a cory catfish, dalmation molly, and a sword tail. I've had the tank since August but the molly and sword tail have only been with me since late December. About a week ago I realized my tank had ick, and that it attacked my sword tail. Just while I was treating it though, I also realized these worm things hanging in it's rear end. Only now did I find out what that meant, he had Camillanus (the dreaded worm). And now he's wasting away because I don't know what to do and he won't eat a thing. My dalmation also has some issues. He has some fungus on his mouth and red velvet (all happening within the last week). My catfish hasn't shown signs of anything but you never know what could happen. So far I'm doing parasite meds for red velvet, ick, and parasites. But I'm not sure it's working. :( Help?! more

Resolved Question: How to keep a Red-Bellied Pacu happy?

Okay, so I have these two little red-bellied pacu, and they're about 3 inches each... (not even big enough to eat little feeder fish). I currently have them in one of those XL acrylic pet holders from Petco with a small cheap filter that attaches to your air pump. They are pretty content in this approximately 5-6 gallon holder for now, but I was wondering what type of tank I should buy for these little guys? Now, I have full knowledge that red-bellied pacu get to be approximately 2-3 feet when they're fully grown and live for over 15 years. Please don't recommend me getting something ridiculous like a 5,000 gallon aquarium for them and don't tell me to return them to the store (ect...). I was wondering what I could do to best suit these beautiful fishes needs within the limit of keeping them in my house. Also, what other fish work well with these feisty fish? Resolved Question: Building own fish tanks?

I have been looking into building my own fish tanks. I already have one built by my soon to be father in law that I have fixed a seal on, and have been thinking about building my own. I like the idea of being able to make it to fit where I want it. I am also thinking of making a few reptile tanks as well. I really want acrylic so that it will be lighter... the glass one I fixed is 180 gallons and HEAVY. Anyone know some pros and cons? How about supplies I'll need? I know acrylic is bonded with a chemical solvent. I want to try it on a small 30ish gallon tank for my goldfish before making one around 150 gallons for Oscars. Is there anywhere I could get acrylic tanks for cheaper than I could make them. I've checked craigslist and most are glass tanks and aren't near the size or the right dimensions I want. more

Resolved Question: How do I start Koi in a 50 gallon aquarium?

My husband and I inherited a 50 gallon aquarium recently (not sure if it's glass or acrylic) and we would like to get 2 smaller koi fish (under 6'') to go in it. I've never owned a fish before and his only experience with fish has been Beta. I need to know what kind/size of filter, pump, etc we need for our tank and general basic-to-extensive koi care. We want to be able to care for them throroughly so they can live a LONG time. Thanks in advance ^_^ more

Resolved Question: How can you remove a sticky glue from plastic?

You know that sticky stuff when you have a sticker and that stuff remains? Well, my little brother stuck a sticker onto my fish tank (acrylic) and now I can't get the sticky stuff off. Is there any way to get it off? more

Resolved Question: Building a larger fish tank?

I have researched building a new, much larger fish tank for my fish but I was wondering if it was really worth it. I have looked at the cost of acrylic sheets, the other products I will need, not to mention the tools I would have to rent to build it. The only thing that stops me from just buying a much larger tank it that it would be custom built to the fish's needs and my own. I would just like to hear from people who have built a sizable fish tank and people who just bought one. Was it worth it?Butterfly Koi more
