Open Question: Fluval Osaka 260 - no lid issue?

Hi All, I'm new in this forum and quite new fish keeper as well. I want to upgrade to a bigger tank now and was thinking about getting Fluval Osaka, as the design is stunning and I simply love it. The only problem I can think of is lack of the lid. Does anyone have any experience of that? I'm not worried about fishes jumping out etc - what worries me is the high level of water evaporation due to open top and the amount of pollution that might get into the water (dust etc.). I've read that some people were trying to fix it by ordering cut to size sheets of acrylic or other plastic materials - but does it really work? If the length of the aquarium is more than 100 cm - I’m worried that the plastic might bend under its own weight. I’d appreciate any advice. Many thanks. more

Resolved Question: how do I remove silicone sealant from my acrylic aquarium?

I made my own aquarium by melting acrylic pannels together with methylene chloride. Unfortunately, it leaked. I put on some aquarium silicone sealant, and it still leaked in one place. So now I'm trying to remove the silicone sealant so that I can try again- but I'm concerned that if I buy a "silicone remover" compound (in a tube or something) that it will compromise the joints. I don't want this thing to fall apart when I try to scrape off the silicone. Any ideas on how to do it short of manually scraping it (it's a long, arduous process, well underway)? If you tell me to re-apply the silicone without cleaning off the old, you won't get the best answer. I need to know how to remove silicone sealant from acrylic (specifically polymethylmethacrylate) without damaging the acrylic. Thanks! more

Voting Question: How can I make a semi-permanent seal on an acrylic box used as a canister filter?

I am trying to create an acrylic box that has a lid that can be sealed and removed as necessary. I am using this box as one of many large canisters filter for my large aquariums. I do not want to make a sump filter ( I have freshwater fish). I have looked into Walmart brand acrylic canisters for food storage. These have a metal clamping mechanism with an O-ring that I would like to replicate. I just do not know how to make such a seal on an acrylic box. Also these containers work perfectly as canister filters, but they are too small. I have also looked into any Tupperware or general storage container as possible alternatives, but they lack the ability to maintain water under slight pressure or without having to "jerry-rig" some type of disposable lashing around the container. The key things that I am faced with are as follows: 1. The box has to be water/air tight so when I seal the drill holes and add plumbing parts, no leaks will occur 2. I want to be able to open the box when necessary to do maintenance on the inside and/or replace filter media. I am at a stalemate at the moment. Any helpful hints from hobbyists would be much appreciated :) more

Resolved Question: Setting up a Cichlid Aquarium- Need Help!?

About two weeks ago, I bought a 40-gallon aquarium that came with a working hang-on-the-back filter, heater, ornaments and gravel. The gravel is pretty coarse: about 1/2"-diameter polished rocks. I set up a decent fish tank for a while, with many fake plants and cute ornaments, and let it sit for a week. Then I bought six guppies: two males, four females. The day after that, two females died. I was worried about my future guppy tank, but after doing some intensive research, I decided that I should have made a Cichlid tank to take advantage of how much my aquarium can hold. I read that guppies were good for starting the cycle for a Cichlid tank, though, so I was happy I had still made that decision, even if it was for another reason. I changed the decorations in my tank with the guppies still in it, so now I have a good Cichlid tank layout, with many rocks, that are stacked or formed into little caves or crevices. I have one fake plant behind the rocks in each corner. However, I really want to make this Cichlid tank as perfect as possible, so I have a decent amount of issues: -My current tank is 40-gallon, the temperature is 79-80 degrees, and the pH is 7.6 1. I am aware that the pH needs to be raised to 8.0-8.2, but I don't know the best way to do that safely without harming my guppies or anything. Also, the guppies can't really handle a pH that high, so when would be a good time to do it? 2. The guppies have been in for 2 days now. How long should I wait until the tank is fully cycled? 3. I fear that my gravel is much too coarse for Cichlids, who like to dig around alot. I want to buy a new substrate, preferably sand, but I really don't want to take out all the gravel on the bottom and then pour sand into the water to have it float around and cloud the water with fish in it. Would it be possible to put sand on the gravel? I don't have eggcrate on the bottom, but I feel like the coarse gravel supports the rocks well and protects the acrylic from them. 4. To raise my pH naturally, should I buy Aragonite sand, reef sand, etc.? What would be something that I could most likely put on my gravel and would raise the pH to about 8.0-8.2? I also have some dried coral, but I don't know if it will manage to raise the pH enough and then buffer it. If pH-raising sand is the better idea, please post a link or something on the Petco or Petsmart website (so that I can easily go buy it at the store. Also, note that I don't buy my fish at Petco, I go to a LFS). 5. What would I do with my guppies when my Cichlid environment is completely ready? Are they likely to get eaten, or could they co-exist with the first pair I put in? (They almost always hang at the top of the tank) 6. Is my filtration sufficient? I would like to spend as little as possible, but if better or additional filtration is necessary, please let me know. I'm sorry for the long and horrifyingly specific questions, but I've had a lot of problems with fish tanks, and this is my first one with bigger fish, so I'm not ready to cut any corners anymore. Any help with any of these questions is truly and deeply appreciated- Thank you in advance! If more filtration is necessary, I probably would need something inside the tank, since 2 hang-on-the-back filters seems excessive.Forgot to specify- I'm going to get African Cichlids: most likely lake Malawi ones.Kenyi fish are what I'm aiming for as a start, followed by anything that can eventually accompany it and give color diversity in the tank. I haven't managed to find a compatibility chart, list or anything that can tell me compatible species of lake Malawi fish that will live in harmony. My understanding is that most Mbuna fish are able to live together, if the ratio of females to males is at least 4 to 1, and if the males are of different species and color than each other. If I'm wrong, then I'll ask a question about Mbune compatibility.Mbuna* my mistake more

I'm building a small acrylic aquarium (about 16 gallons). I want the aquarium to be as maintenance-free as is practical. Resolved Question: Sealant for water and oil?

Hey guys, I have an acrylic tank, and I'd like to seal the edges so that water doesn't get through on one side, and oil doesn't get through the other. I used some silicone aquarium sealant, but the oil seems to have worked its way under it- coming through the sealant glued to the bottom of the tank. Any suggestions on which sealant I should use? I melted the acrylic together with methylene chloride, but I guess it's not a tight enough seal. more

Resolved Question: How to move my Betta Fish to new Tank?

Okay, so I've had great success here asking questions, so here I go again asking for your lovely peoples help! :) I've had my Betta for a month now, he's in an Aquaeon Mini Bow 5.0 (5 Gallon) Acrylic Tank with a small heater, AquaClear 20 Filter, and some aquarium Gravel, Silk Plants and 2 small Caves. Now My little sister just bought a Betta, and to avoid her keeping him in a 1 gallon Closet, I offered to give her my tank, and upgrade mine to a 10 Gallon Glass Aquarium that they sell at Petsmart. A very standard setup, nothing crazy. Now here are my numerous questions/concerns. I understand that the 10 gallon will no longer be cycled as I will be starting from scratch again, however I plan on carrying over my Old filter which has its bacterial Colonies all in order, is this okay? I also Plan on bringing over some of the silk plants, with possibly getting new ones. However I've always wanted to experiment with real plants. Yet i'm afraid of rotting, and parasites, and all that jazz. If I were to try and incorporate live plants, what precautions would I need to do rid them of parasites/disease before adding them. Turbo (my fish) will probably not like moving after getting comfy. But I feel like this will be better for him and the other fish. Plus he's doubling his home! Also, Are glass tanks not as nice to have as Acrylic? i know glass is cheaper, and I did some research on the two. But I wanted to see what other fish owners had to say. Thanks!!!Sorry I forgot to mention! Filter is good for 5-20 gallon tanks with adusting flow. So its set at lowest now, but in my 10 gallon tank it should work fine! more

Resolved Question: I only have a couple questions ;)?

What do you use to clean your horse's water tub out in pasture. Mine is covered in algae and the last time I cleaned it, it didn't work I used one of these: http://www.petco.com/product/110929/PETCO-Algae-Scraper-with-Handle-for-Acrylic-Aquariums.aspx and what do you think of putting goldfish in the water. What would happen if one died and he tried to eat it, if it wasn't diseased. And if i put it in there do i need to use water conditioner so it doesn't die like at home? I'm only keeping them in there till the algae is minimal or take them out during winter went the temperature gets too cold for them. Sorry I guess that was a few questions, but thanks for the help :)what do you use to scrub the algae off, i plan on doing that tomorrow :) more

Resolved Question: My aquarium customization is working. Feedback?

My girlfriend and I posted a question earlier about this idea i had. Check out the question before giving feed back. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvJA94glp.RVSrklvkaXbe4jzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20100607224335AAt4fnw We ran to home depot/lowes and picked up a few things. We picked up plastic trim that was L shaped and used them as brackets. (Someone suggested it in my last question) We found aquarium safe silicone (100% silicone, no mold/mildew resistant chemicals added) and we glued the brackets in place. It has dried for 3-4 hours and its not going ANYWHERE! I put all of my weight into my arm and pushed on one of the brackets and it wont budge. We then got a 8''x10'' sheet of acrylic and placed it in the brackets. It's completely solid. Here are some pictures of it. NOTE that it is not finished., We just filled it up for the pictures and to see how level we made it. We have the filter and bubble stone all figured out. Any cool things i could throw in there to really bring out its appearance. We want more of a natural look and not with the cheap bright plastic chests and stuff. There is about 6.5g of water in the tank space so we are planning on getting 3-4 red clawed crabs, a few platys or tetras, and some corys. http://tinypic.com/r/3483uhw/6 http://tinypic.com/r/2lnzift/6 Sorry for bad lighting =\The two picture links at the bottom should work =\ more

Resolved Question: Aquarium lighting for a 40 gallon?

I ordered a 40 gallon acrylic tank which will be used for a tropical planted community tank. At this moment, I do not have a clue on the lighting systems for aquarium since I am totally new to this. The dimension of the tank is 36" x 15" x 16" as in the specification. I bought two packs of total 10 seeds of aquarium plants. One package listed - Hybird Aponogeton Bulbs (Hey, now I start thinking maybe this "Hybird Aponogeton Bulb" is one same plant? I thought it was 3 different types at first) The other one - Nymphaea Lilly Bulbs I also plan to buy - Java Fern x2 Wisteria x2 Water Sprite x2 Hornwort The aquarium tank specification said - include a 24" UL listed fluorescent light fixture (bulb not included) Some reviews said the tank I ordered will come with a broken cover. So my questions would be, what do I do with the lighting system? (as for I have no clue what to buy, or even how the lighting system will fit with the hood/cover) Direct links to what I need to buy please. (just a bulb? I hope!) And I need to know if the lighting system itself is a hood or it fits into the hood lol...since I saw all the expensive (in the hundreds of dollars) lighting system looks like a hood/cover themselves. Since I am totally new to this, please understand my confusion. Please keep the cost low while keep the sufficient lighting for both the plants growth and overall aquarium appearance purposes. I already spent way more than I should and I haven't even ordered any fish yet. :)The tank I ordered is a Seaclear 40 gallon tank http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753079 more

Voting Question: Marineland Eclipse 6 aquarium filter not working please help!?

http://www.bestpetsuppliesguide.com/wp-content/uploads/marineland-eclipse-acrylic-aquarium-system-6-gallons.jpg This tank, I am the process of cycling my tank. I ordered some live Tahitian moon sand to the tank but I forgot to turn off the filter while adding it so it's completely my fault I think because the filter stopped working after this. I've tried to clean out the filter as best that I can, there doesn't appear to be any clogged sand or anything. It sounds like it's working but then it wont suck. a little sand might have gotten inside but I don't know how much. What should I do to get it to work again? Resolved Question: Aquarium Heater... I need help choosing?

My tank is a round, tall and skinnyish 3 gallon acrylic aquarium that I have a male betta in , who's still recovering from a bad injury . The aquarium has a riser tube in the middle but I can remove it if I need to . I have no heater right now so the water is kinda cold , maybe a little less than room temp. because here in Canada we just had a snowstorm . I want a heater for him because he's red and white but he's kind of a dull dark red when it's cold . When it's a bit warmer he's a beautiful bright cherry red . And he's recovering from a bad injury he lost some scales and his fins got ripped and people say that having nice warm water will be good for him. So I need a heater for 3 gallons , won't melt acrylic & will heat up the water a fair amount, like to around 80 degrees F.thanks (: more

Resolved Question: What fish tank should I buy as a present for my husband who used to keep tropical fish?

It's my husband's 30th birthday next month and I hope to buy him an aquarium as he used to keep tropical fish tank, but hasn't for the last few years I know he'd like to start back up again. This way he can get the tank on his birthday and start cycling it as I would't know where to start. My question is, what tank should I get? I know he wouldn't expect a tank like his previous one (a metre long monster!) so I need something small and not cheap looking that will house some guppies (male/female) neon tetras and a cat fish so definitely not a big tank, just good quality. I know the likes of the fluval edge (which I really like) aren't great as they're too small, so what size would I need to keep the fish I know he'd like? I've been to a few independent stores, and petsathome etc, and they all seem to have quite similar tanks - some do look quite plastic-y and I don't like the biorbs because of the acrylic in them. Resolved Question: Is my 72 gallon bow front aquarium tempered glass?

I got a 72 gallon bow front aquarium off craigslist, it is scratched but i will buy a glass scratch remover. and i want to install a over flow/ sump returns but there are a few set backs... i know the tank was built on May, 1998 as the stand has a stamp that said so and the stand went together with the tank. It is a 4' Long, 22" high, 18" deep bow front aquarium, it is glass not acrylic.I asked the lady is she knew the manufacturer she bought it from, but she said it was loo long ago and couldn't remember. There is a sicker on the bottom of the tank that says this... "THIS BOTTOM IS TEMPERED GLASS FOR STRENGTH AND RELIABILITY DO NOT DRILL" Now i know the bottom is tempered, but are the sides? Well i need to know if the back is tempered glass, because i want to drill it and add a overflow, and two returns. When i hit the glass with my hand, the bottom and the back sound different. The tempered glass is a deeper sound, and the back "not sure" glass is a higher sound. Also the glass looks just shy of about 1/4" thick, can i still drill it with a diamond drill bit? Thanks in advance.UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! I found a site online and it said you could check if glass is tempered with an LCD screen. Tempered glass will make the screen appear to have lines, regular glass wont. well the bottom had lines, the front bow front had lines, and the back and sides did not have any lines, a nice gray screen. that's it. So this is getting ma a little more exited. What do you think. more

Resolved Question: What is the best size aquarium for me?

Hi- I am planning on ordering a marineland eclipse acrylic aquarium sometime soon. I am debating between the 6 gallon and 12 gallon models (price is not an issue). I am putting the tank on a 11.5" wide bookshelf, and want to know which would be the best fit. The 6 gallon is 7.5" wide (which would easily fit), but the 12 gallon is exactly 11.5" wide also. i definatly do not want this to fall off, but i think it might not be smart to have the tank be as wide as the shelf it will rest on. What are your opinions? 6 gal 7.5" or 12 gal 11.5"? Thanks-i also know that 12 gallons would open the door for many different types of fish to keep, but i don't want it to be unsafe. more

Resolved Question: Bio Balls, Green Plastic Toy Soldiers, or Plastic Bath Scrubbies for Wet Dry Filter Media?

I just bought a used 75G acrylic tank with a built in wet/dry system, but it didn't come with anything but the tank! I know wet/dry provides great filtration. I am doing a planted freshwater tank and I also know I should add a mechanical filter to pull out debris and decaying plant material, polish, etc,... but what do I put in all those mysterious chambers in this wet/dry system? I assume some sort of sponge material should go someplace, then I need what? Bio balls? I heard green plastic toy soldiers work well, but I think that must be just a charming aquaria myth. The man I bought the tank from said he just used plastic bath scrubbies from the dollar store. I am no stranger to aquaria. I have had tanks for over 30 years. But this is my first time at bat with wet/dry and it is on a tank with some crazy compartments on the back and it came with no instructions. Once I buy a pump and watch it go I'm sure I will figure it out. But I am wondering what media works best for you? Resolved Question: How much cheaper is it to build aquarium rather than buying it?

Hi, I have 2 questions about building tanks and I hope people can help me out. Thanks :) So I want to build an aquarium by myself I just want to know how much it will cost for a tank like this (I live in Melbourne, Australia). It will be 2.4 meters long (8 feet) about 90 centimeters wide and about 80 centimeters tall. It will be made of Acrylic (1/2 inch thick) and it will be a fresh water tank. So how much will a tank like this cost to build yourself? I don't know much about building tanks. I thought you just have to screw the bottom piece of the aquarium to the table (that will hold the aquarium) then put glue on all 4 sides and stick the acrylic on the sides then glue the acrylic together. Is there any other processes other than these to building a tank? If there is can you please tell me about it, please try and keep the steps as simple as possbile as I am not an expert in this area. Thanks for answering both of the questions every1 :)I will only have 3 sides acrylic the back side will be what ever material they use for the back that is not transparent (which will make things a lot cheaper). How much would it cost for the long sheet that is at the front (2.4 meters long)? What about eBay? Do you think they have good prices? If not where can I get the cheapest aquariums? It doesn't matter if its a website or a shop as long as I can get these products inside melbourne. more

Resolved Question: DIY 150 Gallon Aquarium, help!?

So I am building a Acrylic 150 gallon aquarium, it will be fresh water and the measurements are 260 centimeters by 80 centimeters by 50 centimeters. In inches it is 102 inches by 31 inches by 19 inches. I don't know how many sides will be glass and how many sides will not be. If it is possible I will have all 4 sides glass, except for the bottom and top :D. So what I need help with is very simple step by step instructions, I need it to be simple because I am not an expert in this area. I also need the a list of the material needed. If some one can do these 2 things for me I would highly appreciate it, also how much do you think this aquarium will cost, this excludes the rental of the equipment, the things that I want the price of are the glass, the bottom/top/sides that are not glass. Thanks for all the help every one :) more

Resolved Question: 6.6 gallon Petco Bookshelf Aquarium leak?

About 6 months or so ago I bought a 6.6 gallon Bookshelf aquarium from Petco http://reviews.petco.com/3554/14978/reviews.htm , (unfortunantlly I didn't see the reveiws on it's tendency to leak until AFTER I purchased it.) This is it now http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2795/4269465333_a25b225f46_b.jpg, so I noticed a very small leak yesterday, but it occasssionally leaks over the lip when I overfill it, so I wipped up and left it alone. It's heavily planted so the last thing I wanted to do was tear it down. So I left it and checked back and noticed more water every time I came back, since then I've been keeping track of the water level with a marker and over the last 24 hours I noticed maybe a few millimeters of difference. Very small, possibly my imagination or just plain old evaporation, but still a markable difference and a consitant but very very slow leak. Great. So I tore it down and checked it over, no hair line cracks or cracks of any kind that I could see or feel. It's acrylic so there aren't really any seams with silicone to worry about. So I've got it all the way filled in the kitchen on some dry paper towels to see if it's a pressure leak, so far nada. What the heck? Very frustrating, grr. The clear acrylic is all one piece, but the black part on top fits on, and the whole thing sits in the black plastic bottom. I'm wondering if water just pooled in the black bottom and happened to start leaking out now or what! Ugh, any suggestions on were to go from here? I'd going to leave it filled (just with water) over night to see if it starts leaking again. But I'd hate to set it up just for it to start leaking again! more

Resolved Question: How do I bond 3/8" acrylic sheets for a reef aquarium?

I am making an acrylic frag tank that is 48" long by 24" wide by 12" tall. I am using 3/8" thick acrylic. My question is, How should I bond the acrylic sheets? I have heard that weldon products are good, but I can't find any weldon products in my local stores. Are there any other bonding products that will be safe for a frag tank? I found a product called "Amazing Goop Marine" its an adhesive that bonds acrylic and also seals the connections, is this safe/good? Also any other tips that could help me out would be great, thanks. more

Resolved Question: How do I start Koi in a 50 gallon aquarium?

My husband and I inherited a 50 gallon aquarium recently (not sure if it's glass or acrylic) and we would like to get 2 smaller koi fish (under 6'') to go in it. I've never owned a fish before and his only experience with fish has been Beta. I need to know what kind/size of filter, pump, etc we need for our tank and general basic-to-extensive koi care. We want to be able to care for them throroughly so they can live a LONG time. Thanks in advance ^_^ more
