Resolved Question: How and what do i feed a lionfish?

So i'm planning on having a dwarf fuzzy lionfish in my 30 gallon with live rock and nothing else (maybe some hermit crabs). So how should i go about feeding and diet for the lionfish. Can you feed them on a frozen food only diet? Or will this make them unhealthy. Do they tend to take pellets after a while? Can you feed them fresh frozen fish bait like small squid (abuot the length of you middle finger including tentacles), prawns, fish, pipis, mussels, and stuff like? Is it a good idea to put some pellets into the frozen food so they get vitamins or is there a way you can add vitamins to the food. I know at the big aquarium in my they put vitamin tablets into all of the whole fish they feed. As for how if you just throw in a thawed bit of food will they quickly swim to it and eat it or is it better to get some soft plastic tweezers and move it in the water so the lionfish notices it. Open Question: NITRATE PROBLEM IN FISH TANK?

I have a fish tank with live plants and fish, i know that in the wild, nitrates rarely go above 5-10ppm. so i'm trying to keep that. sadly my nitrates won't go below 5ppm i do weekly 5 gallon water changes on my 56 gallon aquarium. I know that 5ppm is great, but i want my tank to be 100% what do you guys think> is my tank fine? my ammonia/ nitrites are at 0 is 5ppm fine, am i changing enough water a week? will my fish be stressed at 5ppm of nitrates? I use liquid test (master kit) and my nitrates are always at 5ppm, when my tank was cycling it was at 30, and now i can't get it below 5 should i do 10 gallon water changes a week> or am i ok with 5? am i overreacting? is my tank fine? what do YOU think Thank you!I DO NOT use nitrate removing chemicals! And i will not! the farthest i will go will be to add some nitrate removing carbon, but i don't even know if that is real, and if it is, should i use it? or is my tank fine the way it is.ok, i might do a 25% water change weekly, currently i only take out 5G and i guess i could take out 14G would 15 be too much? because i only have a 5G bucket and i don't wana be guessing 14G i think 15 would just be simpler. but if not, i'll do the best guessing. more

Open Question: Freshwater Aquarium help PLEASE! (need some advice)?

Hi there. I just purchased a 30 Gallon aquarium..it has a filter good for a 60 gallon tank (Marineland Penguin 200)..a great heater, and all that stuff..so I do have everything..and the tank has been running perfectly for a week straight before adding fish..so now is the time for the fun part. I just want to know anyones ideas on what fish I should put into this to make it colorful and for them to get along? I kow it is a common rule for 1 inch fish per gallon of water so I have lots of room. I currently purchased 2 Zebra Danios..and so far thats all that is in there..and they are extremely happy. But I currently got an amazing deal off a friend for the following; 1 Large fancy Goldfish/or Black Moore 2 Pleco bottom feeders and about 5 Tetras. Ive done some research and am weary about goldfish as I now they are not compatible with the tetras and they might eat them?..is this true? Please help?..this is set up for my 4 year old son..and he checks on them every morning..last thing I need is some fish to be eaten by other fish. What would be YOUR ideal setup for a 60 gallon freshwater fish that would be eyecatching and compatible? Thank you for your time.Hi yes I agree with the entire goldfish thing that they are coldwater and blah blah blah...but the guy who currewntly has them all together has had them for 5 years and they are doing fine?..is that just a fluke? more

Open Question: Why are my fish dying?

I have a 30 gallon saltwater set up. I change 10% water out every week. I check the levels in the tank with test strips and have completely normal readings. The temperature in the tank is fine as well @ about 80 degrees. Also, the salinity has been within reason, however, when I checked today it was high so I exchange some water out - when I do water changes I use distilled water. When I do exchanges due to salt content, I use tap and use a de-chlorinate - the reads in the tank still pan out well chemically. I am wondering if there's something that could be killing my fish? I have had one firefish, one midas blenny, and possibly now (i think that's what I found while cleaning the tank today), a cherub angelfish. Maybe there is something I'm missing.. which is why I'm posting on here! I am listing the stock list in the tank below as well. Additionally, I've lost a skunk shrimp completely disappeared.... we thought maybe cause of the bubble? The behavior of the fish currently is normal, save for the firefish we have now that's hiding a bit more than usually and doesn't seem to really want to nom. I have been spot feeding him where he hides so I'm thinking he's getting at least something. The bubble comes out every day and is very happy. The devil's hand is off and on and seems a little stressed.. same for the mushroom but they are getting situated - had to move some stuff around in the tank a while ago so I could see areas better - and I think they are still getting used to where they are (did this about a two weeks ago or so). Stock list: I have 3 green chormis, 1 firefish that's a little stressed, some snails and hermit crabs, one coral banded shrimp, one dancing shrimp, one bubble coral, one devil's hand leather coral, two button polyps, one yellow polyp, and a mushroom coral. (Also, there's some live rock but not a lot). Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am striving to do my best to be sure that I'm responsible with all of these awesome animals! I'm just frustrated as I can't seem to find the reason why and all the places I check - end up looking just fine within the aquarium. more

Open Question: Will this water heater work for my fish tank?

I just bought this 300W water heater on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/300-WATT-Submersible-Aquarium-Fish-Tank-Water-Heater-US_W0QQitemZ390222379002QQcategoryZ46311QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3907.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D8%26pmod%3D230504278929%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D6751587988470281083 I have a 30 gallon fish tank, is this water heater too powerful for my tank or will it work just fine? more

Open Question: I really think I might be underestimating my bioload(??) Any thought?

I currently have an up and cycled 15gal tall aquarium (20x10x20 I believe). The floor of the covered with a mixture of river stones, natural-colored sand, and black aquarium rocks (all pet-smart bought). There are also tons of fake plants lining the back of the aquarium (no real plants at this time). My biggest concern is that the tank must be transported to and from my college dorm every year. I have posted a few pictures of the tank here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/elves117711/Fishy/100_3986.jpg (there are a few pictures, and the filter isnt dirty -that is loose carbon on the top from the bottom of the package). Housing: 7 zebra danios (2 male 5 female I believe) ; 1 male betta (veil tail, very very passive) ; 2 mystery snails (1 gold and 1 blue) all of the creatures in the tank for the most part ignore each other. I could not be happier with the set up! Heater: Constantly on; used to keep the tank at about 80*F (it turns itself on and off) Air Stone: There is a 12in (??) air stone along the very back of the tank. It helps to move air into the water but is blocked by lots of large plants. The betta does fine in the “current” bc there is literally no current moving through the whole tank bc of all the plants breaking it up. Filter: A combo lid/light/carbon-biowheel filter. The monster is an Eclipse 1 system by Marineland running 150gal/hr (so, 10x my tank size). You can read up on it here: http://marineland.com/sites/Marineland/products/productdetail.aspx?id=2054&cid=3243&mid=3227 Maintenance: I change the carbon filter about every 2-4 weeks (i.e. whenever it turns black) and perform about 30% water changes every week to every 2 weeks with a gravel vacuum. The replacement water sits overnight and is conditioned before use. Feeding: The little fellas are fed a combination of Topfin color enhancing pellets and Topfin freeze dried medly and/or Tetra Tropical Crisps… and there is usually one little algae wafer in there for the snails. The “Rule”: Sure, there is the whole rule about 1in of adult fish per gallon or 3in of adult goldfish per gallon (I have 1.5 in of fish left over by this rule), or some say to use this rule based on the standard size of the aquarium (so mine would be a 10gal for stocking reasons because you would ignore that it is a tall). …but then, if you do regular water changes and have a super filter (like my 10x my tank size one) you have much more room for bioload reasons (I not discussion swimming space in this thread). …but then other people say that the more stuff you have, the less bioload you have (makes some sense bc there would be less water). Does anyone have experience on this? I have quite a bit of middle swimming room going unused, my fish are content in each other’s company, I do regular water changes biweekly at a minimum (although could probably do it once a month)… do I really only have room for one little 1.5in max fish? As a science major, MY bioload story does not add up. The tank is fully cycled and the filter works wonders on it. I really think I could add more creatures. Thank you for any comments, Sarahbeth more

Resolved Question: What would be a cool insect or bug to put in a 30 gallon Hexagon aquarium?

I have never owned any insects before, but think it would be cool to have some sort of mantis or something. It would help if you could give basics about whatever you suggest. Please include prices for the actual insect, and an estimate of the cost of the initual supplies I'll need to set up. Any suggestions would be appreciated :3 more

Open Question: Clown fish/Damsel Aggression! Ideas Please!?

I have a fully cycled 30 gallon aquarium with live rock only. I originally started by adding two damsels once the aquarium was cycled and they are still doing great. About 4 days ago I purchased a false perc clown which is a bit smaller than both of the damsels - probably a mistake. Both of the damsels have been somewhat aggressive towards the clown, but one has been especially bad. Within a few hours the clown's fins had begun to become frayed from being nipped at. Currently, the clown is separated within the tank in a small net-like enclosure that you would normally place small offspring in. He is doing fine and eating normally. I tried removing him from the net and placing him back in the tank today but the damsel was still aggressive - so I'm at a loss of ideas. Should I purchase a larger fish that would possibly scare the damsels? Purchase an anemone for the clown? - if an anemone is your suggestion please outline one that is easier to keep as the tank has only matured for a month or two. Any ideas? And yes, I tried to catch the damsel but found it near impossible after lengthy time periods. Ideas on how to catch it might be helpful as well! Thanks more

Resolved Question: HELP? Orphan mice, I need tips?

Man, what is up with this week. We rescued two orphan emaciated ducklings, and now I have two mice. I went to clean out the chicken coop at the barn and I lifted a container and a bunch of mice went running out. Two of the chickens that stay in the coop most of the time, murdered all but 2 of the babies. The momma mouse got caught by the barn cat (finally he's doing his job, but it was the saddest thing I've ever seen), as well as another baby. I now have these two, in a 30 gallon aquarium with hay, bedding and a small towel to hide in. They're about 1.5 - 2 inches long (their bodies) and are fully covered in fur. I put rodent food in there, fresh grain, fresh veggies and water. Do you think I need to give them milk? Should I just use KMR? They're already really friendly and sit in my hand. I don't think they're field mice because I've seen house mice, domestic mice and field mice. They're grey brindle with white spots (one has a white spot on his forehead, the other has one on her paw). They're a little bit smaller than the young mice they sell in the pet store. more

Voting Question: Help with keeping Swordtails?

I will soon be stocking my 30-gallon freshwater tropical aquarium, and I wanted about 3 swordtails for somewhat of a "centerpiece," as the other fish I will be keeping are all very small. I'm not really interested in breeding them, as I don't have the equipment (or patience) to deal with fry, or that many fully-grown swordtails, for that matter. Males are more interesting to look at, but I've heard they have aggression problems with other males. If I just got 3 males and there were no females for them to fight over, would these problems still exist? Or do I need to just stick with 1 male and 2 females and find some way around the breeding? more

Resolved Question: 30 Gallon Saltwater Aquarium?

Hi! I was wondering what are the supplies and things I would need to start one? I would like it to be just a Live Rock tank, and not a coral. I currently have my 30 gallon tank as a freshwater. So what would the supplies I need be? Like powerhead etc. Thanks! :) more

Resolved Question: How long does the bacteria bloom cloud last in a new aquarium?

I'm cycling my new 30-gallon aquarium before I put any fish in. To speed up the cycle, I introduced filter media from my already-cycled 10-gallon tank. Both tanks are tropical freshwater. The morning after I began running the 30-gallon (and introduced some flake food to rot and generate ammonia), the water was very cloudy. I figured this was most likely the bacterial bloom; it just happened much sooner than usual because of the filter media. But with my 10-gallon tank, it was only cloudy for like 12 hours or so before it cleared up. This tank has been cloudy for more than a day now. How long does the bacterial bloom usually last? more

Voting Question: Will this aquarium setup work?

I have a 29 gallon aquarium, power filter meant for 30 gal tanks. This is what I have in my aquarium: Gravel, 1 shell, 1 piece of driftwood with anubias plant on it. I have one goldfish who is 10 years old, 7-8 inches long. The goldfish will not grow any bigger now. (The goldfish was kept in a 10gal tank, I just upgraded to 29gal now) I want to keep two bristlenose plecos in the tank with him too. They should grow only 5-6 inches long. I have a 100 watt heater (not in use right now) which I can use to keep the water temperature in the overlap area for what goldfish and plecos like. Will this setup work, and is there anything else I should do? Thanks a ton for your help. more

Resolved Question: Cloudy aquarium water?

I just set up a 30-gallon freshwater tropical aquarium. I have nothing in there except brand new substrate, and a couple fake logs (made for aquariums obviously). There are no fish or anything, I just set it up yesterday. To cycle it, I put in a rather large amount of cheap flake food wrapped in a section of nylon pantyhose, so I can retrieve it and throw it away when it has done its job (generating ammonia). I also put in the sponge from my sponge filter in my already-cycled 10-gallon tropical freshwater tank. Inside the sponge is just an airstone with water, creating suction. Other than that, I have 1 airstone creating a wall of fine bubbles, and the regular filter. When I put in the water last night, it was slightly cloudy, but cleared up within a few hours. This morning (and all day), the water has been very cloudy. Is it possible that this is the "bacteria cloud" that happens when the biofilter bacteria reproduces rapidly in a new tank due to high levels of ammonia? Or is there something else causing my water cloudiness? more

Resolved Question: which tank is better for 2 dwarf hamsters..?

Resolved Question: What is the best filter for my goldfish aquarium?

I have four small goldfish in a 29 gal aquarium and the current filter, an Aqueon power 30, isn't keeping the water clean enough. I know that is too many goldfish for that size but it is just a temporary home. Currently, the ammonia is a .5 ppm and the water isn't very clear. I was wondering what size filter would be better to replace the current filter (like a filter for 55 gal)? Would it be better to add a second, smaller filter for rated for 10 more gallons? What brand works the best for the money? I am not looking to spend a whole lot on a filter since this will not be their permanent home but I don't want any to die. Any suggestion are greatly appreciated... Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Why does my pet turtle always try to escape?

I have a freshwater turtle about five years old that has never been in the wild. It lives in a 30 gallon aquarium with good warm water, filter, and a dry area. I take good care of it and feed it every day, but every since it was a baby it makes these drastic attempts to climb out of the tank. It spends most of its time trying desperately to climb the wall. Resolved Question: Fish for comunity tank?

I've got a 30 gallon aquarium, with three rummynose tetras, three zebra danios, an oto, a bronze cory (The only surviving from a group of four over a period of 10 years from my old tank) three white clouds, a molly, 2 platies, and a small deformed swordtail given to my by a pet store employee because nobody wanted him, even though he's quite beautiful. I would like some larger, but still peaceful, fish. Before, I was told my tank was overstocked, or to get more of the same types of fish. Though, I don't want a larger tank, with a bunch of little tiny fish. So, I'm probably just going to trade all the fish in, exept for the cory, and restart. I saw a very beautiful goldfish at the petstore, about 5 in, and was wondering if I could house it. I know they grow very large, but would a 30gal be enough for a single goldfish and an elderly cory? I do want tropical fish still, though, after just spending a small fortuna on a new heater. What tropicals can you suggest that are at least 2-4in? Thanks all!I don't believe you understood me at all. I said I wanted to restart my entire tank. Meaning, get rid of them, and just have a single goldfish. So, I think I did have my facts straight, you just didn't take the time to read completely. Thank you both for your completely obscene answers. more

Resolved Question: Sick Goldfish Please Help?

I have a 1 inch goldfish. I don't know what kind it is it's just one of those 49 cent cheap goldfish you get t petco. It lives in a 1 gallon aquarium with an air pump, artificially colored gravel substrate, 2 artificial plants, a fish only sign, and a shark with it's mouth open. Yesterday I found it curled up in the sharks mouth. When I tapped on the glass it started swimming out of control. So I took him out of the tank and put him in a plastic cup with new water and I added water conditioner. I could see he was doing better already. I thought he might have swim bladder so I fed him peas. I wasn't sure if he ate them but he got completely better and he was swimming around fine in the cup so I did a complete change. I dumped everything out. I scrubbed the tank. Rinsed the rocks. Cleaned inside the air pump with a sponge. Rinsed the artificial decor. I cleaned everything completely. I put cold water in the tank with conditioner and put him back in. I went in to check on him about 12 o'clock and he was begging for food. So I fed him a teeny tiny bit. I went to check on him about 3 o'clock and he was swimming funny (wasn't curled up). This was at night not day. I usually stay up this late. I awoke in the morning to find him curled up at the bottom of the tank like the other morning. I immediately took him out and put him in the cup and put cold water and conditioner same as last time and fed him peas. Didn't work . Now it's about 7 30 pm and he's and the bottom of the cup curled up. Not even tapping the cup would work. He wouldn't move. One thing I have noticed is his gills are puffing out and in like crazy. It's like he has gill hiccups. I've never seen his gills expand that much. Every 2 seconds they expand and close. At first I thought it was swim bladder but I haven't fed him anything but peas and he won't eat them. The first time I put him in the cup and he got better. Now he's doing worse. And i don't know what's up with his gills. Every one in a while his eyeballs act like their gonna pop out when his gills expand. Please help me. If you say he's going to die please explain why. I understand he's probably gonna die but what's the cause? I was thinking maybe the shark has something to do with it because both mornings he was in the shank or near it. He usually doesn't go in the shark so I knew somehing was wring he was trapped. more

Resolved Question: What type of lighting does live rock need?

I want to make my 30 gallon a little nano reef tank but at the moment i'm planning fish only with live rock. So does live rock need that full spectrum lighting to grow or does it go fine under just your average fluro aquarium lights?People i know what live rock is and when i say 'grow' i would've thought you understood that people mean the organisms on the rock. more

Voting Question: I need help with new aquarium?

I have a 10 gallon aquarium with guppies and I was thinking of getting a bigger tank. I'm not sure yet how big, I'm getting it from a friend's friend. How would I go about putting my fish in this new tank? I know you have to cycle new aquariums, but how would I do that when I have my fish? Would I just use my 10 gallon filter, with the good bacteria inside, in the new aquarium, along with another filter or two to make up for the extra space, such as two more 10 gal filters along with mine for a 30 gal tank? How would this work without hurting my fish? Help please? more

Resolved Question: I need help finding a fish!?

Ok So I've got a 29 gallon aquarium with 2x 30 gallon filters, an airstone, and I do regular water changes. I plan on having by the end of my stocking I plan on having: 3 boseman rainbows, an african dwarf frog, a platy, a dwarf gourami, a cherry shrimp or two, and an angelfish (yes it may eat my shrimp). Soooo my problem is that I have room for one more fish. But I can't find one that I want. This fish should be 1-3 inches big. I want a really interesting fish that you wouldn't consider your typical petco's beginner fish. Something REALLY cool. Something that will actually bond with me (like the angel will) not a ditzy fish that only eats (i.e. a platy) Any suggestions? cuz id love an idea! (no invertebrates please. unless there's a freshwater starfish lol) more

Resolved Question: i finally have a good stocking list. is it okay?

i was thinking this for my 30 gallon planted aquarium 1 black lace angelfish (bought as a baby, and put in the tank last) 2 blue rams 8 black phantom tetras 4 platy 5 kuhlilochh i currently have 5 black phantom tetras, for cycling my tank, but after it cycles i wanted to do this stocking list. ive heard that the black phantom tetras will fin nip if in a group of less then 8. i was wondering if this was true. i also heard that if the angelfish will hurt my black phantoms, as they are small. that's why im buying a baby angelfish. i would like to hear any recommendations though. the temperature will stay at about 26 f.what if i got only 1 blue ram, and 3 platies? more

Resolved Question: Fish Stocking For My Aquarium?

OK So ive got a 29 gallon aquarium. I'm an intermmediate aquarist so I'm not naive about fish care or anything. I've been doing this for a while. But I've got an aquarium with one Neon Dwarf Gourami (3.5 in) 3 Bosemani Rainbows (4in ea) An African Dwarf Frog (1.5in) and I plan on adding a Bamboo Shrimp (2.5 in) and an Angelfish (6 in). So this would basically max me out for the 1 inch of fish to gallon rule. The thing is, I perform weekly 30% water changes and have two water filters (Tetra Whisper 30 Gallon & Aqueon 30-45 Gallon) and have an air stone on top of that. This technically provides my aquarium 60-75 gallons filtration and provides abundant oxygen. I was seeking personal adivce as to if you believe I could add more fish, and if so how many inches of fish. Every situation is different with how you can stock an aquarium depending on the factors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! more

Resolved Question: What type of fish should I add to my saltwater aquarium?

I have a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium setup. The nitrates are close to zero, ammonia is at zero, PH fluctuates between 8.3-8.4, the salinity is at 1.024, i have adequate lighting, mechanical filtration good for 20 gallons, and biological filtration good for 50-70 gallons, the ALK is a little high... but I'm hoping it will regulate itself. I have two (2) of the Aqua Clear 30 gallon power heads... making for 60 gallons worth of wave-making and circulation... along with the agitation from the filters. The tank has been setup for about a month mow, and the live rock is growing stringy algae on it if you look closely, and the glass is now starting to get circular algae on it as well. I just put in two damsels about a week ago, and they look to be doing fine... except they like to hide under/in/behind the rocks. I also have a live sand bed in the tank that is about 1/6 of the whole tank (it's about 3" high). Would it be safe to start adding fish into the tank (besides Damsel)? Should I try coral? I know that coral is hard to keep... but I think I'm up for it... What fish would be good for starting? How/what would I fees them? Because the water circulation obliterates flakes... so what types of sinking food should I get? Thanks in advance for your help!I already own a tank with piranha in it.... for all you retards out there! more

Resolved Question: One of my common goldfish just died...HELP!!!!?

I have 2 common goldfish in my new tank. One of them just died - actually while I was at the store buying Ick medicine for him :( I have the one remaining. Should I go ahead and treat him for ick even though he isn't showing signs yet?? I know the other one had it. Also, I just received the biowheel for this aquarium. Is it ok to put it in while I'm medicating. I removed the carbon filter and am soaking it in tank water for now. Here is some extra info you may want: 30 gallon eclipse pfe3 tank - set up for 1 week today. Still no signs of ammonia - hoping it will start to cycle soon. Is 1 fish enough for it to cycle?? Thanks so much for any advice!! more

Voting Question: Tips for starting a freshwater tank?

How necessary is it to check pH of water? I remember as a kid, my family had a large 30 gallon tank. All we did was add distilled water to it with rocks on the bottom. We had some decorations and about 10 fish. One of the fish was a sucker fish and the others were small transparent fish. We really didn't do much but feed them. The sucker fish took care of cleaning the tank and maybe once every six months we did a water change. Hardly and fish died. Were we lucky? What should i do when starting an aquarium. more

Resolved Question: pH problems in saltwater aquarium?

I just set up and cycled a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium with live rock. All chemical readings are normal except pH. My pH is ~7.80 and has varied through that number throughout the cycle. I added a few damsels to my tank a few days ago and they're doing fine - they are eating, and they look healthy. I have a Marineland Eclipse filter hood on top of the tank, as well as an internal mini skimmer - I also use RO/DI water and Instant Ocean salt mix. I also have an aragonite live sand bed (about an inch or so deep) I went out to the LFS and bought some pH+ by Brightwell Aquatics, and I've already done two doses and seen very little change in pH. This makes me think that maybe the alkalinity in my tank is low? or could something else be going wrong? Any ideas? more

Voting Question: Velvet? Fin Rot? HELP!?

55 gal aquarium, set up for aprox. 2 months 4 African Cichlids I recently set up my 55 gal tank with filter media from a healthy 30 gallon tank. I started with just one fish, who had been living happily and healthily in the 30 gallon for 6+ months. I then bought 3 more fish and quarantined them in the healthy 30 gallon for almost 4 weeks. Seeing no signs of disease or stress, I moved them in to the 55 gal about a week ago...and now, all of the fish in the 55 are sick. I thought I did everything right in setting up this tank, but obviously not. The fish have been eating well and acting normal up until last night. When I went to turn off the tank lights, I noticed that one was very inactive and hanging near the surface. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that all four fish were behaving oddly. One has clamped fins and is not moving much. One is hanging around near the surface with slimy-looking white patches on the skin and frayed/disintigrating fins. One has frayed/disintigrating fins and looks as though he has been covered in a very fine layer of white dust. The last fish has only the dust look. (It is not ich -- there are no isolated white spots.) Last night I gave all 4 fish a salt dip and have medicated the tank with Melafix and Pimafix (yes, I removed the carbon). I also added aquarium salt. Suspecting a possible velvet infection, I also started API General Cure this afternoon. I went to two different pet stores that told me two different things (my local fish store is closed Sundays, so I had to go to the big box pet stores where the workers are clueless about fish), so I have no idea if I going in the right direction with this. HELP! Advice wanted! Just FYI: I did my last water change 3 days ago and replaced about 1/3 of the tank water, which is my normal amount. I tested the water last night. Ammonia is 0, Nitrite is 0, Nitrate is between 5 & 10, Ph is 7.8.I also noticed a fine layer, kind of like white dust, on the tank decorations, rocks, and the filter intake tube. There are also small white things on the glass that look like almost-microscopic threads. At first I thought it sand had been kicked up during a water change and settled on the decorations, but on closer inspection it's definitely not sand.I didn't just dump the fish from the 30 into the 55 gallon -- I put them in bags and floated them for about 15 minutes so they'd adjust to the temps. Also, with fin rot, don't the fins usually turn black at the ends? That's not happening here. more

Resolved Question: Dawn dish soap in a Glass aquarium?

I tore down my 30 gallon freshwater aquarium about 2 months ago not anticipating that I would want or need it set up in the near future. Unfortunately, I forgot about the under-gravel filter, and after getting all of the rocks out, the bottom of the tank was -covered- in mold (most definitely not algae). I cleaned the entire aquarium with Dawn dish soap, rinsed it 5 times after not seeing any suds, then did a double rinse with a high concentration of aquarium salt water followed by another clean rinse. I filled the tank 7/8 of the way, treated it with Smart Start and set up the filter and heater to help the tank start cycling. I also added 3 T of aquarium salt. I haven't put in the Bio Wheel yet because I don't want to run the risk of contaminating it in the event there is even a minute risk that the Dawn hasn't been neutralized. Should the tank be OK after sitting 3 days to add the Bio Wheel without running a risk to the future residents of the tank, or should I clean it again with something else and start over to be on the safe side? My African Peacock Cichlid is carrying a brood as of last night and plan on putting her and her fry in this tank in 2 1/2 weeks (this is her first brood). My other tank has 8 other 4" + cichlids in it that would love to eat them and I'd like to give her a chance to recouperate before returning to the main tank. more
