Resolved Question: Help setting up a new saltwater aquarium - what equipment etc?

Hi, I have a tropical tank atm - 95 litres. I know how to look after fish so I am not a total beginner. I am looking at buying a 4ft tank, which is around 50 gallons. Comes with a cabinet but she doesn't have any of the other equipment so I have to buy all extras. I live in the UK so could someone help me with all the equipment I would need to purchase to start off a saltwater tank and roughly how much it would cost before I go and buy the tank. I know about cycling etc and I won't add fish straight away etc so don't worry about things like that! :) Many thanks more

Voting Question: Clearing a Clogged Toilet?

Well, I have a bit of a funny story to tell. I share a bathroom in our basement with my brother, and he's not the smartest of folks. We have a cabinet above the toilet and he keeps his things on the bottom shelf, and earlier this week while he was rushing to get out of the house, he dropped the cover to his electric razor in the toilet. Instead of fishing it out, he thought that it was small enough to make it through the pipes, and without thinking much further, flushed it and left. As I'm sure you can imagine, it is stuck in there real nice. But before he realized that the cover didn't make it through, he came home and dropped another goody in there, this one of a more organic nature. At this point things are clogged, but not dangerously clogged. Water will still drain out of the bowl after a short time, but solid things are having a bit of trouble making it out, as I'm sure you can imagine. What I would like to know is if there is anything that we could do to get the cover out of there without having to call a plumber. I'm not much of a handyman, but I'm willing to get a little dirty if it will save a plumbing expense. We have a sump pump in the room adjacent to the bathroom, and I'm told that the bathroom is far enough underground that water has to be pumped up to the sewer level in order for it to exit the house. The solution I was thinking of was to turn off the water to the toilet and then drain as much of it out as possible, and then use a wet-dry vacuum to suck up the blockage. I'm not sure how large the pipe is, but I know that the blade cover is about 1.5" in diameter. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. If there's anything that I should NOT do, I'd also love to hear it. The last thing I'd like to do is make the situation worse, and possibly more funny. We have a small pond pump, something like 3000 gallons/hour, a few 5 gallon buckets, and some aquarium air pumps and air line. Oh, and a plunger, but I figure it's not a good idea to push it further through the pipes if the objective is to get it out. A macgyver-type solution would be awesome, a neat plumbing trick would be great, a good plumber in the Sedgwick County, KS area would suffice, if you know one. Thanks in advance, and I hope you get a kick out of this just like I am. more

Resolved Question: ideas for my new room?

hey guys im moving in like a month and ive been thinking of how to make my bedroom in the new house im moving to. im a 16 year old boy and i love contemporary style. ive seen the size of the bedroom that ill have, and its pretty large so i could use a lot of ideas. i already have a few ideas. i think im going to get a metal loft bed with a desk underneath, a black leather couch, flat screen tv, file cabinet dresser, glass night stand, 2 bean bag chairs, and possibly a 20 gallon aquarium. im kind of a alternative/stoner kid but im also a neat freak and i LOVE contemporary and modern styles. so you guys have any ideas of what else i can put in my new room? thanx more

Resolved Question: aquarium sand or gravel?

i have just purchased a large 4 foot fish tank and cabinet. i originally had a 60 liter tank but decided to upgrade. I had gravel in the 60L tank buy am thinking about using sand in the new 215L tank. I keep freshwater fish. is it possible to use sand instead of gravel? does it take more to look after? Thanks more

Voting Question: How much would this cost?

I'm needing (not wanting) to sell my 25 gallon Eclipse tank. It has black silicon, Eclipse 2 hood (lights don't work..filter does), black cabinet stand, heater, 6 silver dollars, 1 buenos aires tetra (buddies died of old age and I didn't replace), 1 gold gourami, 1 african brown knife, 1 gold spot pleco, 2 breeder nets, aquarium salt, LOADS of fake plants, large driftwood, large resin driftwood, $60 worth of lava rock, variety of foods, Cycle, Amquel +, filter cleaning brushes, extra filter cartridges, nets, 3 air pumps (small Whisper, Rena100, and Rena50) with tubing/stone/check valve, veggie feeding clip, and live worm feeding cones. The tank is fully set up with LOTS of extras in the cabinet (some outside because it doesn't fit), but the hood and stand could use a bit of cleaning. I'm needing to know what price I should put on all of this (in US Dollars)? I need it gone hopefully by the end of this month, but I'm not wanting to pretty much "give" it away. Any ideas?African Brown knife fish only get an average of 8" (versus the 3-4ft clown knife). He has lived comfortably in my tank for 2 years. I've also seen plain 25g tanks (no filter/heater/stand) sell for $50-80, so I KNOW I can get more than that.redtop, I would absolutely love to keep it, but moving has forced me to sell. I have no room for the tank in the new house, and can't afford to store it month after month. When I graduate college, start making money in my career, and find a larger place, I plan on getting a larger tank than a 25g. more

Voting Question: What can I do about a pre-trial case against me because i was evicted and the hearing was so unfair?

I lived 101/2 yrs in same duplex,, i was evicted amd sued for damges. I have already gone to pre-trial the 1st of Feb 2010 but it was so unfair, I was not let a chance to say anything, my attorney had to come from 3 hours away, and I had meeting with my attorney and he felt they did not have a leg tp stand on with all i oprovided, pictures, etc, and i was so mislead. There was a sit in judge and before I went to court my landlord said he was suing me for 15, 000 dollars anf I about dropped dead. there is a lot to the story but now after pree-trial, I am liable for 45, 000.00.(my Mom is) becaue she c-signed but never lived there back whe I needed the pull because I was single. I also had a 1600.00 feposit and there were some things broke, such as doors, no screens, some rot from aquarium in small area, but I requested a walk through, he did not comply, but I was also paid in full so it was not about bavk rent. I did feel maybe a couple thousand dollars because my son fell through two sliding closet doors in hallway and they needed to be rteplace and 4 doors, and 3 door frames, and the stove was cleaned by professional, i had my own refrigerator. basically the landlorn the day after i moved out had his relatives who was the people when there was a problem come and fix things. there was a horrible water problem, where he had to replace my bathroom floor 4 monts before i was evicted and yet he tore that all up and everthing in the house from floors, cabinets, ceiling fan and lights, all cabinets inn bathroom and kitchen, charged me for carpet and i had lived ther 10 years, charged me for painting, he charged and helpo my mother resposnible for remoldling his entire duplex and i got scwered and no one would let me get a word in, they all wentinto the conference room with judge, i was left in court room with baliff for over 3 hours, and was cut off talked out of jury trial which i felti wanted, and i could not believe allt his. my mother is wealthy, 84 years old, could not be here for the pre-trial, and everyone was totally against me, and they called my mother 3 way, and within minutes, case closed and i was upset and turned around and left. never was i able to say anything. what can I do? this is unfair and unheard of, i feel they were in kahpotz and i am so upset. more

Resolved Question: Any tips for keeping crickets? Four questions about crickets....and one random one. :D?

Hey. :) I have a few questions about keeping crickets. You don't have to answer all of these. Any advice at all is appreciated. Thanks! 1. Can I keep my cricket container in a cabinet? I'm worried about air circulation though...I've read about people using aquarium air pumps to circulate air in cabinets...how would that work exactly? And would soundproofing foam on the walls help muffle the noise? 2. How important is light? I've done a lot of reading and have read everything from "too little light will reduce the lifespan" to "crickets should be kept in a dark area." What's your opinion? 3. How can I keep noise at a minimum? It's bugging the crap out of my sister (no pun intended). Would putting soundproofing foam on the outside of the four sides and the bottom of the container help at all? Obviously the top needs left alone for air circulation. 4. What's the best way to clean out the container without letting crickets escape? I have one of those "cricket keepers" with the tubes, if you know what I'm talking about. I was thinking of getting a second container, then transfering the lid with the tubes from one container to the other, and dumping any stragglers and egg crate in after. Obviously some will inevitably escape, but I do all my cricket work with the container sitting in my bearded dragon's tank. Escapees last about 10 seconds thanks to my dear Loki. 5. Anything interesting and irrelevent you want to share? :) more

Resolved Question: how can I build a really simple aquarium stand?

Problem is, I don't have a saw, etc.... Would that work? Any ideas of other things I could use for a stand? The stands they sell at petco, petsmart, are expensive an dpieces of fiberboard garbage! more

Resolved Question: Just got a 55 gallon aquarium... ideas?

so i've been having a 2 feet aquarium for almost 5 months and i found this deal in a classifieds site... i went and met the guy and bought it, a 55 gallon aquarium with cabinet and cover (designed full set) with a canister filter and two lights, (UV and white), i talked with the guy and he liked me enough to give me an abandoned 55 gallon tank he had in his yard with a metal stand (its quit run down, but you know, the gesture is what counts). although the deal was quit cheap to what i was getting... it consumed a big portion of my monthly allowance, (i'm a student so...) so i won't start buying stuff for it till about next month (next paycheck) but for now i'm entertaining ideas, i was thinking angle fish for the nice tank ( i quite like angle fish), and a cichlid community for the other one, i was wondering how much substrate/ gravel do i need for each, the other aquarium doesn't have a filter which type should i get for the cichlids. what other fish can i keep with the angles.. how many angles is too many? what combination of gravel/soil is best suited for each tank if i plan on planting it later on, how much substrate should i get? would you brain storm for me a little bit? thanks alot.lol @da fish freak,, sorry for that, i wrote it in a hurry, you can see my ideas were a bit messy. so an under-gravel filter is the best for cichlids? i'm now thinking of using thegood aquarium for african cichlids after seeing these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-nEkOwSNGY&feature=related i would love a vibrant aquarium like that. do you have other ideas? where is the best type of rocks for them, cuz i'veseen people using different types of rocks more

Resolved Question: Do you think Obama will keep his promise of "no pork" by vetoing the spending bill being passed in Congress?

Republicans and taxpayer watchdogs are railing against the thousands of earmarks included in the omnibus spending bill that passed the House Thursday and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. Republicans and tax watchdog groups are railing against the thousands of earmarks included in the omnibus spending bill that the House passed Thursday and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. The $1.1 trillion bill includes $447 billion in operating budgets for 10 Cabinet departments. Mixed in are more than 5,000 earmarks totaling $3.9 billion, according to watchdog Taxpayers for Common Sense. Pork-watchers are only just beginning to sort through the earmarks, which typically are goodies set aside for the districts of members of Congress, as the bill tracks toward a final vote. So far, they've uncovered gems ranging from $700,000 for a shrimp fishing project in Maryland to $30,000 for the Woodstock Film Festival Youth Initiative to $200,000 for a visitor's center in a Texas town with a population of about 8,000. "Let's stop the madness," House Republican Leader John Boehner said, before the bill passed without any GOP support. Twenty-eight House Democrats also opposed it. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., wrote to President Obama urging him to veto the bill, and pledging that Republicans would stand by him if he did. Obama in March waved off controversy over a $410 billion spending bill that also was riddled with earmarks, arguing that it represented "last year's business." This time around, Boehner said, the president needs to crack down on the pork under his watch. Republicans, though, have hardly shied away from the earmarks. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., is pushing $200,000 for the Washington National Opera. Sen. Judd Gregg, a fiscal hawk, is behind a $1 million earmark for renovation at the Portsmouth Music Hall. Taxpayers for Common Sense reports a total of 5,224 earmarks in the 2010 spending bill, which also includes funding for Medicare and Medicaid. Groups like Citizens Against Government Waste, as well as Sen. John McCain's staff, have drawn attention to dozens of items they consider questionable. Here's just a sampling: -- $150,000 for educational programs and exhibitions at the National Building Museum. -- $400,000 for renovation of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. -- $150,000 for exhibits at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site Foundation in Buffalo, N.Y. -- $500,000 for Mississippi River exhibits at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. -- $200,000 for the Washington National Opera. -- $30,000 for the Woodstock Film Festival Youth Initiative. -- $2.7 million for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, to support surgical operations in space. -- $200,000 for a visitor's center in Bastrop, Texas. -- $700,000 for a project called, "Shrimp Industry Fishing Effort Research Continuation," at the National Marine Fisheries Service in Silver Spring, Md. -- $292,200 for the elimination of blight in Scranton, Pa. -- $750,000 for exhibits at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in Iowa. -- $1.6 million for a tram between the Marshall Flight Center and Huntsville Botanical Garden in Alabama. -- $655,000 for equipment at the Institute for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Research in Los Angeles. Republicans have been on a tear over earmarks and excessive spending over the past week, particularly as Congress prepares to take up a new jobs-creation package and raise the debt ceiling by nearly $2 trillion. Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., on Thursday named what they called the 11 most wasteful spending projects considered by Congress so far this year. On Wednesday, four Republican lawmakers demanded an audit of the $787 billion stimulus program following reports of exaggerated or inaccurate accounts of the number of jobs created. McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., on Tuesday released a report on 100 "questionable" stimulus projects worth nearly $7 billion. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/11/watchdogs-foul-thousands-earmarks-spending/ more

Voting Question: Help modifying an oak aquarium cabinet?

I am trying to put a sump under my 75 gallon glass aquarium but the stand that came with the tank has some kind of wooden support dividing the cabinet in two. There is no room to put a sump/refugium and i don't want it to stick out the back. I was thinking of simply removing the support and putting two on the sides but I'm not sure whether the wood will hold a 75 gallon tank filled with water and around 90-100 pounds of live rock and 30-40 pounds of live sand. Is there any way to reinforce the cabinet so that the wooden support (baffle?) can be removed? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: HELP... need advice on what aquarium to get?

I have had a fair sized fish tank for a few years now, i am swapping rooms with my sisters so they can have a better room, since i am at uni most of the time, and need to move the fish tank into the new room, the walls are slightly odd, as they slope, and i need a fish tank that is large, i.e long and fairly wide, but it needs to have a smaller cabinet so the height is reduced. Is there any fish tanks out there that are suitable? many thanks more

Voting Question: I have a 30x12x15 glass aquarium - do I need a cabinet to put it on?

Ok, so I just bought an 18 (approx) gallon glass aquarium to my baby black moor and fantail so they'd have more room. What I want to know is if I can just put it safely on a desk/table or whether these aquarium cabinets are specially made to hold the weight. I'm pretty sure this tank will weight around 100kg once filled with water and gravel so I know I need something sturday. I am also going to put a waterproff sheet under it so stop the surface getting wet. Any advice or experience here would be great! ThanksRE: 75 gallons I have spoken to many people who have kept fish; one person who used to keep black moors for show and had some that reached into their 20's. He kept no more than 2 in a 40 gallon tank and never had any problems. I'm not an expert but I'm going on what experience people I know have - 75 gallons, whilst I'm sure would be lovely for the fish, is apparently not necessary for them to have a happy and long life... I appreciate your answer though! more

Voting Question: I have TOOOO much stuff! My room is a MESS?

My room has been messy since I was little. I just have TONS of stuff. Even after I get rid of half of it, I have way too much! The thing is that I need most of it. I think most of my problem is that I have nowhere to keep most things. My parents are incredibly cheap. My room consists of a desk, 2 end tables, a bed with you headboard, a dresser and a small cabinet that my aquarium sits on. All of which were given to us by my relatives or found by my mom at the thrift store. My parents don't like to spend money on things. They very rarely buy things new...Except for clothes. With that said, I'm looking for creative ways in which I can store my things. I want to be able to easily access them if I need them in a few days. Because, often that's the case. A few years ago I put almost all of my stuff into plastic boxes and put them in my closet. But, that left not much room for my clothing and I had to search through the boxes multiple times a week to get things I needed. That just left stuff sitting all over the floor. So, what can I do to store things like jewellery, makeup, art supplies (pens, pencils, markers, paints...etc.), misc. papers that I need to keep for health/school purposes, lotions and creams and body sprays, chargers for cell phone, ipod, camera...etc. Websites meant to keep you organized would be great! Thanks a bunch :)a bed with NO* headboard more

Resolved Question: Getting a 51 litre topical fish task...?

and i need somewhere to put it. i know which room i need, but i need a suitable cabinet so place it on. it needs to be fairly high so that my dog can't reach it, but obviously strong so it wont break with the weight. i have a normal empty mfi style desk made out of fake woody stuff, but i dont think this would be strong enough as it's not supported all the way round, it looks a bit like this: http://www.tradepoint.ca/TradepointProductImages/ProductImages/40633_1.jpg so could anyone paste a link so a picture of what sort of cabinet/shelf would be suitable? if it helps, this is the tank: http://www.rocketaquatics.co.uk/aqua-classic-tropical-aquarium-p-2581.html more

Resolved Question: Is This The Right Equipment For A Saltwater Tank?

Thank you to those who answered my last question. This is the list I've come up with for a saltwater tank (fish and invertibrates). I already have a 44 gal tank and a canister filter which I previously kept goldfish in. So, does this equipment list sound right? Am I missing anything? I'm new to saltwater. Lights - Power compact fluorescent lights Heater - Submersible heater. Do I need 2 or will 1 be okay? Canister Filter - I already own one and would like to use it. Trickle would be ideal but I don't have a cabinet (just a stand) and noise is a big issue. Do I add anything to the canister (where, how?)? It contains wool, sponge (Black 35ppi), Sponge (Blue 15ppi) and BioNood. How often do I need to clean it? Protein skimmer - I would like to get a good one and larger than what I need so it doesn't need to work so hard. Brand reccomendations? I saw a big expensive one for $300 (although I can get it cheaper) which says that you don't need air stones if you use it. I forget what brand or model it is. Thermometer and hydrometer. Aquarium salt and conditioner. Algae scrubber. Fish net. Live sand and live rock. Do I need aerating pumps and air stones? Also I heard you can get something that automatically tops up evaporated water? What are they? Does that sound about right? Thanks for your help. :)Thanks for reminding me AZZA, a test kit as well. more

Resolved Question: Constructing the ultimate filter...Need advanced marine hobbyists advice....?

Hello I currently have a 150g tank that is extremely overstocked (and dont want to get rid of any fish) The main problem is that there water quality gets crappy/cloudy/and filled with toxins like ammonia to easily, so I was planning to seriously construct and upgrade my current wet/dry filter system. (All of this will be under the tank along with the wet/dry system) I was thinking of moving the wet/dry system all the way over to one side of the cabinet (which is what the tannk is sitting on) so the side of the wet/dry sump with alll the bio-balls in it is touching a wall. I would then put some sort of sturdy object underneath the wet/dry sump so as to raise it to a higher elevtion. Then I would get the biggest aquarium-tank that I could fit into the cabinet and place it right next to and below the suspended wet/dry sump. Then I would saw a section out of the wall of the wet/dry sump (the walll opposite to the bio-balls) so then the wtaer will stream down like a waterfall into the newly placed aquarium-sump. I would silicone a sponge-like-filter-pad to the wall of the new tank-sump furthest away from the original wet/dry sump; In this new little space created in between the wall of the new-tank-sump and the sponge-like-filter-pad I would place the pump to shoot the freshwater back up into the tank. -----So from there, I would've increased the water capacity of the tank which helps add to the fish per gallons of water rules. ---But now in this newly created tank-sump, I will will add tons and tons of live plants which are extremaly beneficail for eating up waste....... That is about my general idea....so I was wondwering if any advanced hobbyists could suggest to me any tips/modifications/altercations/improvements/ anything! For example in the orginal wet/dry sump, all there will be is running water, so if anybody else could suggest to me any good filter media or something that would best supplement the conditions of an overstocked tank such as cloudy watr, ammonia, ect.........thx for your time, its all greatly appreciated...........BTW i forgot to tell you that I would suspend a light over the new tank-sump to keep alive the plants more

Resolved Question: Should I be worried about this?

I’ve been seeing this guy for about two months. I have always been amazed by how seriously he took his hobby. He have bunches of aquarium in his house. Almost every room has at least one or two in it. There’s also a couple aquarium built in the wall. He also have all kind of fish in different tanks and organize most of them according to what part of the world the fish are from and everything. He also tries to make it look like as if it is exactly as what you would see in wild. He even has one room that has nothing in it but tanks with a futon in center of the room. His bedroom has a huge tank at foot of the bed as well. Once, when we went to a aquarium store, he stays in it for a hour and he even refused to buy a fish for variety odd reason. He will only buy a fish as young as he could get it and he’d make sure they have no rip in fin or anything. He later told me that he go to various aquarium store about once every two weeks or so. He also feed his fish all kind of stuff. He has cabinet full of all kind of different fish foods. He’s also a member of a couple aquarium clubs. He had had an aquarium ever since he was six years old. He doesn’t even have a television, he have a huge fish tank in place of where television normally would be. I can’t help it but wonder why would he need all of this? Is this type of thing common with someone who do aquarium as a hobby? more

Resolved Question: How much is my aquarium set-up worth?

I have two aquariums I want to sell, but I don't know what they are worth. 1. 55 gal, hexagonal corner glass tank with a wooden stand/cabinet, hood/florescent light. Was used for 6 months. Paid over $900 for it (including a nice Fluval filter, but that is no longer with it) a couple years ago, which I know is far, far, far from what I could expect now... but surely it's worth more than a few bucks. What would be a decent "asking price" to tack on in front of "OBO"? 2. I also have a 75 gallon rectangular glass tank with wooden stand, fluval external filter, hood with florescent lights (two lights instead of one long one across), heater, light timer, power strip. Paid around $600 a few years ago. Again, I don't exepct to recoup any where near what I paid for it, but I don't want to give it away either. What would be a decent starting price? more
