Resolved Question: What are some saltwater fish that tend to swim at the top or middle portion of the tank?

I'm planning a saltwater aquarium and before I start buying equipment and going through the hassles of new aquarium setup, I wanted to plan out what I was going to put in said aquarium. Well 7 of the 13 fish I plan to put in the aquarium (not all at once obviously) are bottom dwellers, and I'm afraid of crowding (especially since I plan to have corals in the tank too which will take up even more space at the bottom) Any help will be greatly appreciated.Well, its a 60 gallon and the fish are Chromis, a Goby, Fairy Wrasse, Dartfish, a Dragonet, a Blenny, a Dottyback, and a Sea Moth I'm going for a peaceful theme... So these look compatible?BTW they total 54 inches of fish so its well within the boundaries of the inch/gallon rule so no worries =) more

Voting Question: What do I need to start my Marine Tank?

Hi. I'm soon going to start up a marine aquarium, but I'm going to get everything separately. I'm looking to get a 90L-110L tank, but I don't know any of the equipment I will need to start it up (apart from a protein skimmer, some kind of filter & a heater). Also, if possible, could you approximate the cost for everything I will need? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Will this new aquarium setup be just fine?

I ordered a 40 gallon (37.4 really) tank. It won't be here for a while. Which gave me time to read/think on what else to get. First, I will set it up as a tropical fish tank. I just ordered Rena 300 air pump (just returned a Tetra Whisper which sound like someone is cutting grass) EHEIM Classic External Canister filter Emperor 280 filter (going to return it lol...ppl told me it's loud...they said it's already sent but I can refuse it on arrival they said) Hydro IV Sponge Filter (why not use this too at the same time for more bio-filtering lol? In case I get fry, I can just leave this one on right?) biOrb and biUbe Tropical Heater 2x Coral Floral Cave and a fake tree root with another cave below it. I also have lots of tiny aquarium blue rocks from years ago. Going to use them. ----------------------------------------------- Now for the fish. There is no pet store nearby. Only walmart sells some pet fish. I am looking into get only the small ones. No more than 2.5" at full adult size. My choices are limited to what walmart here is selling Glofish (plan to get 8 at least) tetra serpae mixed fruit tetra Platy Molly dwarf cory ghost shrimp (I will get 3 or more for algae control) gold mystery snail (same) black mystery snail (same) So aside the fish/shrimp/snails I will definately get, how should I use the remaining room? I don't even know if all these fish will get along and eat the similar food. I got the 3 in 1 food which including flake, baby shrimp, granules. Aside suggestions for the type/number of fish I should get from the list above, if you see any problems with the equipments I am getting or lack of important equipments, please say so. I am new to tropical aquarium. Thank you!I also bought two small packs of aquarium plants seeds. 1 pack with 8 seeds and with label of Hybird Aponogeton Bulbs A different package contain two large seeds labeled with Nymphaea Lilly Bulbs@ courtney It's glofish. Not goldfish. It says they grow up to 2.5" at most. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GloFishI did quite a bit reading in the past week. And I learned about the cycling. Since the tank hasn't arrived yet, i can't cycle the tank itself. But I do have a 10 gallon tank at this moment. So I am cycling the items that I already have. The caves, root, blue rocks. Hoping to get some bacteria on these things which I can plant into the new tank later when it arrives to speed of the cycling. I threw a tiny piece of fish meat into the tank a few days ago. Now the tank water already smell like fish and the ammonia reading was at 3 yesterday. You think it's a good idea to cycle these items before the actual tank arrive? Which won't arrive for another 2~3 weeks....petsmart is so slow... more

Resolved Question: Can you help me with my (in)decision about my aquarium?

I recently decided that I wanted to get an aquarium. I was inspired by my friend who had a cute little aquarium with guppies and live plants. My previous experience was with the expensive tropical fish and colored rocks. I loved how the guppies mated and gave birth and they were pretty cheap and very hearty. I was looking on craigslist and I came across some aquariums, I got sucked into looking at the big ones. There was a 40 gal tank with all equipment for $95 and then for $150 there is a 60 gallon tank with everything and a beautiful wooden stand that made it an awesome piece of furniture. There were also some smaller ones for $40 or $50. I really really love the huge one with the wood but it is more than I was expecting to pay. I know that this $3000 dollar tank will sell quickly on craigslist. Should I move now while I still can? Will guppies do this tank justice? If not are there any cheap and/or reproductive fish that will? My gf thinks I'm crazy to want the nice one but it will serve the dual purpose of being a nice piece of furniture instead of just sitting on one. Should I go with my gut on this one and cash out or take a chill pill and start with a smaller aquarium? more

Resolved Question: I need step by step instructions on how to set up a saltwater aquarium?

Alright so here's the deal. I've almost got all the equipment gathered up for a 20 gallon aquarium that I would like to make a planted tank. What I have is a great sand base layer and gravel top layer for substrates. They were both marketed as very nutrient for plant growth. I also have a strip light which has a secondary bulb designed for plant life. In addition to this I am also using DIY CO2 injection. As you can see I've got the equipment figured out. I'm a pilot of a Cessna 152 in Texas. The aircraft does not have an air conditioner and it gets extremely hot during the Texas summers. I found this link on youtube of how to build a portable air conditioner using an ice chest, aquarium pump and table top fan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjY-8FN1myU. Resolved Question: I want an aquarium. How do I set it up?

I just want to start off with some gold fish. I know I have to wash the tank, plants, equipment, and decorations but how long should I let the filter run before I add the fish? A day, or can I just add the gold fish as soon as I get everything set up? And I know you have to let them adjust to the water temp by just setting the bag that they're in into the water for 30 minutes. Oh, and it will be a 10 gallon tank. Also, I'd like to know how many gold fish can be in a 10 gallon tank?I'm kinda on a budget, maybe I'll look around for a bigger tank. more

Resolved Question: Substitute for a Sponge Filter?

I'm currently doing a fishless cycle of the water in my aquarium, and while it goes, I'm putting in all my equipment, decorations, etc. I'm considering getting a sponge filter, but I'm on a budget and I think I may have found a substitute. The way I see it, the sponge filter has three functions: -Causing water movement so the oxygen levels stay high enough and the water doesn't stagnate. -Filtering particles from the water. -Providing somewhere for the bacteria in the bio-filter to live so they can continue to effectively cycle the ammonia and nitrites in the tank. -So if I have a small air pump and an air stone to move the water around, that should keep oxygen flow up and prevent stagnation. Also, I use a screen lid on the aquarium rather than a hood, so that should also help keep oxygen levels up. -Two Cherry Shrimp or so will probably keep up with the particles and discarded food in the water better than a sponge filter anyway, so I'll just get those. -Finally, if I put a sponge or two in the water, those in addition to my gravel substrate should provide adequate housing for the cycling bacteria. If these will do a suitable job, then I should be okay without a sponge filter, right? more

Resolved Question: What are some recommended accessories for a saltwater aquarium?

I am new to the whole saltwater aquariums. I have had many freshwater tanks in the past and never had any problems. I had a 55 gallon freshwater but sold it when I moved. So this time around I am starting up a saltwater. I know its not much and I'm in no rush to get it up and running immediately but just would like to get some feedback on the necessities for running a good saltwater tank. So far all I have is a 20 Gallon long (want to start with something small for now.), a Marineland Emperor 280 Power filter, and a Coralife Aqualight Dual T5 Lamp High Output Fixture, and also 10 lbs of reef sand. I plan on getting clown fish just too start out and know that getting them in pairs is recommended so I'll only have two for the entire aquarium to start. There will also be live rock and anemones. I would rather get all the equipment I need first cause I plan on running the tank with live rock for about 2 weeks to cure it just in case. So my biggest questions would be: What other recommended equipment do I need? (heater, hood, etc.) How many fish would accommodate my aquarium size? Or how many recommended gallons per fish? How many lbs. of live rock should I get? And any other recommendations other than getting a bigger tank? I would rather get all the equipment I need more

Resolved Question: Can you answer some aquarium questions?

I have just cleaned and tested a 20 gallon high tank(around 24x12x17). You can call me a new fish owner. I do have most of the equipment though. Here are my questions: 1. I want to get a dark tank, which kind of lights do I need? 2. Some of the fish that I want need a densely planted tank, some need floating plants, some need roots, others need hiding places. How should I do this? 3 Will these fish go together, and how many of each(I'm starting out with at least one Platy, or Black Molly)? -Platy(or Black Molly) -Striped Pleckolita -Brown Pencilfish -Clown Killi -Lamp-eyed Panchax -Ram Chichlid -Cardinal Tetra -Akure Aplocheilidae -Five-Banded Killifish -(Maybe) Dwarf Platannas[it's a frog] 4. What are some good stores for getting fish supplies( I live in the Ottawa[Ontario, Canada] area)5. 5. Is it bad to have an aqarium in your room? 6. Look out for more questions from me! And thanks in advance. When I say dark tank, I mean that in the book that I have read, it says that the fish I have picked out need to live in dark tanks(low light). and I have 2 other questions: 7. When I get a timer(for the lights), what time should I set it to? 8. If I have schooling fish(the ones that I have chosen) will the tank be over crowed? If so, what should I do? more

i bought a 10 gallon aquarium kit/set that came with a filter, but the current from the filter seems too strong for my two 2inch gold fishes. it keeps pushing them and they seem to be stressed out by it. *or maybe my fishes are dumb because they keep trying to swim towards and against the current* Anyways, is the filter just strong because its new?
