Open Question: Ghost Shrimpies! I gots them.?

And one I think is a pregnant female. :D Anyone know what I should do to help her? She appears to be more bold than the other two. And bigger! The tank is filled to 5 gallons, it has a homemade filter right now with an air pump and two hideouts, AND a pretty orange plant with sand colored gravel. It looks like the sea, but for freshwater fish. The temperature will stay as room temperature - 68 at night and 73 during the day. I have 3 shrimp in there, 2 male and 1 female. Their is a cute little one in there that seems to stay to itself and the other two follow eachother around. Should I get 1 more so the little one isn't alone? I waited close to 1 hour with their bag floating in the water before opening it and letting them out. Okay, maybe it was 40 minutes...around that. But the tank has been sitting for a day before I put them in and I just added a few flakes in their (tropical flakes) for them to eat. They are just hanging out right now, exploring. Anything else I need to do? Their aquarium is set in from of a window with a cover, so they get plenty of light without too much. I still am gonna try to get fish netting as a lid for the aquarium, and a fluorescent light (Probably tomorrow!). Are they more active at night than the day? What is the healthiest food I can give them?OH, I forgot. Are ghost shrimp afraid or shy of noise? Because the air pump makes noises in the aquarium...if it ends up against something it is a bit noisy. I'd say low to medium sound. Thanks! :) more

Open Question: Can u guys tell me the most important details in this agriculture article?

TITLE = Progress on Vaccine for 'Ich,' Bane of Fish Farms and Home Aquarium Hobbyists ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2010) — Tests of the potential vaccine against "Ich" ― the dreaded "white-spot" disease that plagues fish in commercial fish farms, public aquariums, pet fish retail outlets, and home aquariums ― are raising hopes for finally controlling the disease, scientists reported at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS). ________________________________________ "Outbreaks of the parasitic disease caused by Ichthyophthirius (Ich) can result in losses of 50-100 percent of fish," Dehai Xu, Ph.D., said in presenting the results. "The disease is very common, and almost every home fish hobbyist has encountered it. Once the parasite infects fish, and starts growing in the skin, fins, and gills, there is no really effective treatment. Ich causes losses estimated at $50 million annually. It would be much better to prevent the disease." As an indication of the difficulty in treating Ich outbreaks, Xu used the example of an infection that strikes a commercial fish farming pond, which might have a surface area equal to 10 or 20 high school football fields. The typical treatment involves pouring in a solution of formaldehyde, a potentially toxic substance. Hundreds of gallons might be needed, and farmers might have to repeat the treatment several times. Even after treatment, the fish would be at risk of reinfection if they encountered the parasite again, he said. "To vaccinate against Ich, you would need much less medication, and it would not pose an apparent threat to the environment," Xu pointed out. "And you would need just one treatment to make the fish immune for life." Xu explained that efforts to develop an Ich vaccine have focused on use of so-called "trophonts," which are the infective stage of the Ich parasite's life cycle. Trophonts burrow into a fish's skin, fins, and gills, causing the white skin spots characteristic of the disease. Those efforts have been hindered, however, by gaps in scientific knowledge about how fish develop protective immunity to trophonts. Xu and colleagues, Drs. Phillip Klesius and Craig Shoemaker, who are with the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Auburn, Al., set out to fill those gaps. Their study evaluated influence of vaccine formulation and doses of vaccine on protective immunity of channel catfish against Ich. The results showed that vaccination with live Ich theronts and trophonts killed with high-frequency sound waves stimulated production of protective antibodies in the catfish. "This study demonstrated that vaccines against Ich induced protective immunity and could provide a unique solution to prevent this parasitic disease through vaccination," Xu said. "An Ich vaccine would have great impact by preventing the disease, minimizing loss of valuable fish and increasing profitability of aquaculture." Xu noted that the study was a small, laboratory-scale endeavor, with unsolved problems on the road ahead to a commercial vaccine. One, for instance, involves producing a large quantity of Ich antigen for the vaccine and then formulating a vaccine that can be easily administered to large numbers of fish in a "bath" or in food, rather than by injection. In the bath approach, fish would be kept in a container or an enclosure with water containing the vaccine. This study is within the component of ARS National Program 106-"Aquaculture" to improve health and welfare of aquatic animals. Xu and colleagues hope their study will bring more attention to the research to combat this disease. more

Open Question: Help with African Dwarf Frogs and treating the tank for fungus?

We purchased a new Molly for our fish tank a few days ago. She had acted a little strange, but seemed overall ok. We foud her this morning with a white "fuzz" on her. We took her out of the tank, but she died before we got to the pet store. The store told us to treat the tank with Fungus Guard dissolving fizz tablets. I dropped one in my 10 gallon tank and it turned my water a green color... Anyway...my African Dwarf Frogs immediately began acting very frantic. They were trying to climb out, staying at the surface non-stop and behaving in a way I have NEVER seen. I have watched them since 10 pm last night (it is now 3 am) and they were acting more and more hysterical so I netted them out of the water, put them into a 1 gallon storage container with 75% fresh water, a small plant and that is it until morning. Is Fungus Guard harmful to the frogs? I asked the girl working at PetSmart, and she said no, but I don't exactly take her word as gospel! ;) As soon as I netted the frogs out (they didn't argue with being removed from the water) and got them into their new water, they took a breath at the top and settled onto the bottom where they usually stay. Help - what do I do? I don't want to risk the rest of my tank and NOT treat for whatever fungus the fish had, but I don't want to kill my frogs with the treatment either. By the way - we keep freshwater aquarium salt in our tank all the time at a rate of 1 tbsp per 10 gallons. Thank you... more

Open Question: Guppies turned violent??!!?

I had previously housed 5 guppies in a 4 gallon aquarium and they were relatively placid, happy, and got along well, but since I've put them in a 12 gallon tank, one has died and the rest have become so violent towards each other, and have become territorial. Open Question: Why is my Silver Zebra Danio chasing Neon Tetras around?

I have a 10 gallon aquarium with: 2 fancy guppies 1 catfish 1 Silver Zebra Danios 4 Neon Tetras For some strange reason, the Silver Zebra Danio (We named him Sylvester) started chasing any Neon Tetras he gets close to. I thought they all are very compatible with each other and are non-aggressive tropical fish. Why is this happening? What can I do to stop this? I am a beginner aquarium owner. Open Question: HELP!! GUPPIES POSSIBLY DYING!?!?!?

Today i put my guppies into their new 10 gallon tank. Before they were in a 1 gallon bowl and 2 gallon tank- which was to small so i upgraded. Yesterday i set it up and let it run for 24 hours then put the fish in today. They don't seem to be doing well at all they seem horrible and i don't know why. i have an undergravel filter fit for like a 2-3 gallon tank in there and another filter (not undergravel) which i don't know the "type" of (im not much of an expert) that is fit for 5-6 gallons. It seems to be making a little bit of a current in there which they don't like very much, but i need the filter in there. I also have an airstone in there so the undergravel plus airstone should be making plenty of airation for them... They don't seem well now, before they were very happy. i aclimatized them right... i floated them in the new tank and dumped in a little water from the tank then floated them some more... etc. There are plenty of plants and decorations in there for them to hide in and gravel. The water is also dechlorinized so i don't know what the issue could possibly be. There aren't many fish in there. Three normal sized guppys that you would buy at the pet store and 6 very small "feeder" guppies that i would say probably like 3 would make the same amount of waste that one normal sized guppy would make. So I guess you could say that there are "about 5" guppies in there if that helps. All that they do is sit at the surface in one big Clump of guppies and don't move... they also won't eat any food at all for some reason. I don't know what happened to all to them and i'm worried that they might die here soon. What is going on? does anyone know? And oh ya i have a heater now and aquarium slat in there- before there tank/bowl wasn't heated if that has anything to do with it but acclimatizing them should've been fine with that. Anyways please help i don't know whats wrong.! more

Open Question: Is this a good deal for a hamster and set up?

I'm probably going to adopt a hamster from this rescue. if you buy this set up for 50$ you'll get the hamster for free. here the exact quote: " We do have cage set ups for sale. A 10 gallon aquarium with screen lid, cage clip, food bowl, water bottle with holder, exercise wheel and hidey house are available for my cost of $50. Buy a set up and get the hamster for free" I think it's a really good deal but i might replace the water bottle depending on if its good and possibly the wheel if it squeaks. Open Question: Is my fish tank okay? (10 points)?

Today for my 5.5 gallon betta tank I cleaned the tank about 30% and since it looks like my betta fish has fin rot, I added some aquarium salt into the new water. I removed my betta fish from the tank and he's in a cup right now. Anyway the brown stuff from my tank filter went everyone in the water so I scooped it out with a fish net (because I was cleaning it in the old tank water), and also when I took my aquarium decorations out the brown gunk went flying everywhere in the water. Well my tank is so brown and cloudy right now, and I added the new water. Should I be fine? I am going to add the betta once everything seems to clear up abit. Thanks in advance. The fish tank is so foggy. o.o more

Resolved Question: Nitrite/Nitrate help?

Info: 72 gallon freshwater aquarium, 3 months old, waited a month before adding fish (1 lg. severum & fostered a few platys & mollies for family for short time), levels always good, weekly water changes of 20%, partial gravel vacuum, and I do not over feed. UNTIL now... added 4 cichlids >4" along with our 8" severum and I can not bring my levels down, no matter what. Pet store told me that I shouldn't change the water as often, change one filter cartridge at the time days apart (i changed both ev. 2 wks.-month) and to use a nitrate remover, which I have and it's done nothing at all. I used a 5-N-1 test strip test and the levels was off the chart. The pH is accurate. I can't add plants, the fish will destroy them. I've tried a privately owned pet shop & a chain to get help and no one can give me an answer to help me get it straight. Please help! more

Resolved Question: What could cause a combination of brownish spots and gasping in my goldfish?

I'm a college student, and my roommate and I accidently won a pet goldfish at an event almost 2 weeks ago. He was touch and go for a while after we brought him back to our room because he's been sitting out in the (albeit setting) sun for a couple of hours in a small 1 gallon bowl with at least 20 other goldfish. We went out and got him a 1 gallon bowl ourselves that night and have since added a filter which says it is designed for 1-3 gallons. Because the filter is in a bowl rather than a tank, we've had to improvise a little and put it at an angle, but it's been like that almost a week now, and gave us no troubles. I've kept fish for most of my life, but this is my first goldfish—he's just a standard, small goldfish, probably not 2 inches in length counting fins. If I can keep him alive through this weekend (including a 3 hour car ride to my parents' house) then I he will have a new, fully filtered, 5-gallon tank waiting for him—which I think will be a much better situation, but I'm worried about him now because he's displaying troubling symptoms. I just noticed a few hours ago that what I thought was possibly a small spot of waste stuck to his tail (that one's literally only a few millimeters long and not even one wide) is actually several similar specs of dark green-brown spots on parts of his fins. It doesn't really look like fin and tail rot because it's only a few specks on isolated fin ridges rather than the overall fraying fin more characteristic of that disease. What's really troubling me is that he also has a brown (not raised-looking) and much larger discoloration spreading over one of his gill areas, and has since been rising to the surface of the water (even though I have a filter) and gasping at it like he was oxygen deprived. He's been doing this several times a minute, which I know is not his usual behavior. I actually noticed this symptom late yesterday, though I didn't see the spots/discoloration then. I have been wrestling with high ammonia levels in my bowl (although this doesn't really look like the dark black patches I've seen with ammonia burn) and was changing out 25-50% of the water daily for a time. I went a bit lax with water changes these past few days because he seemed to be doing better, but now that these symptoms have appeared, I've changed at least 50% of the water today in small increments. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with him or what I should do to fix it (or how dangerous/immediate the problem might be)? I've started adding a little aquarium salt to each of my small water changes in addition to my usual dechlorinator, but that is all I put in my water and I have nothing else on hand in this city (my hometown is a 3 hour drive, which I'm actually hoping to take my fish on tomorrow afternoon). I’ve been going through some rough times lately, and so really don’t want to lose my pet fish too. I’ve become quite paranoid.I forgot to mention that I am also currently trying to lower the temperature in my dorm room to 65 degrees Fahrenheit because I know it is a better temperature for a goldfish in terms of oxygen saturation. And in case I haven't made it clear, I am rather experienced with caring for fish. I KNOW that I need to get him out of a bowl, I have a VERY good tank waiting for him (and actually, current recommendations indicate a 5 gallon tank would be an excellent size for a fish like mine) and will be moving him into it as soon as the fish and the tank are in the same city—Texas is a rather big state. What I am NOT well versed on, having always had a top-of-the-line 20 gallon tank are various DISEASES which could be causing this. I already mentioned the ammonia problem, and am aware it is at least a factor, but the marks look very NON-TYPICAL to be ammonia burns, and so am seeking out OTHER answers, and would appreciate something in terms of HELP as opposed to patronizing lectures about temporary fish bowls. I know they are terrible, and would love to get my fish healthy enough to transport him to his new EXTREMELY WELL-FILTERED tank. more

Open Question: Why did my crown tail betta die?

I have had many bettas before and I would say I have a pretty good back ground with them. Its just I went up to find one of my bettas dead and I can not think of a reason of why he died. I got him In January from petco and he was fine. I was keeping him in a divided 10 gallon with one of my male on the other side. They rarely noticed each other. After a 50 percent water change i replaced the decor and the divider. i always just put one male in for like an hour to see if he can get through. i put my other male in and over night my crown tail slipped through to the other side and killed him. I removed the body and did 95% percent water changes on both my 5 gallon and 10 gallon. I moved my other crown tail out of the 5 and in to the 10 and stuck Ice in the 5 gallon. Both were heated at the time but not filtered but at that moment I put filters in. I accidentally knocked the cup my one that died was in and it fell off the desk and on the floor. He was on the floor max 5 seconds. So maybe it could have been from stress? I treat my water with aqua safe and a put a little bit of aquarium salt in as well. I tested the water and everything was normal. I put him in and he started acting very lethargic and rested on his plants all the time. He was not sick and had no ripped fins what so ever. I kept an eye on the temp all week and it stays with in 78-82 degrees so I’m not really sure what went wrong. I did what i always did. My other one is acting normal and is just fine and I did a 95% water change on it so it cant be from water changes. more

Open Question: PH won't increase above 6.2ish in my freshwater community aquarium?

I have a 37 gallon freshwater community aquarium (w/ live plants) and I just can't seem to increase the PH level above around 6.2. I've used several different test kits all with the same reading. I've used several types of 7.0 ph balancers. I've also bought PH increaser liquids...they never change the reading. I have african cichlids among a couple other types of fish, so ideally I would like the tank to be around 7.0-7.5. They fish seem happy and with no signs of stress but i would still like to bump it up a bit. There doesn't seem to be any obvious probelms...amonia readings are low and water is crystal clear. Any suggestions?Just wanted to add...never had a problem stablizing the ph to 7.0 in my old 20 gallon community tank, although that was with artifical plants. This is my first live plant tank so maybe that has something to do with it??? more

Open Question: FISH HELP ASAP PLEASE!!!?

Ok so I had 2 ten gallon aquariums and have had them for years. I recently upgraded to a 30 gallon tank and bought a delta tail betta to showcase the new aquarium. Most of my community fish and the Betta got along but I walked in to check on the aquarium just in time to see the Betta attacking my Serpea Tetra. It is not a long finned fish, but they do school. I only have one and it has a red tint to it, while the betta is all red and relatively the same size. Does anyone think that the Serpea Tetra may have been trying to school with my betta??? I saw both the Tetra following the betta, and the betta stalking the tetra before the fight broke out. The Betta is temporarily in a floating breeder tank in the aquarium but gets agitated when the tetra comes near. Any suggestions???? I would like to save putting the Betta into a new tank as a last resort due to space issues! I thought maybe getting more Serpea Tetras might cause the one I currently have to school with them and stay out of the Betta's way but it might just make more prey for the betta. Would this be a solution? Please help my fish!! more

Resolved Question: Attn: Fish Pros! Platy fish had babies - can they survive if I leave them in 10 gallon tank w/other adults?

We just added 3 platies & 3 long-finned tetras to our newly established tank last week, and noticed that one of the platy fish had babies this week! They are SOOOO teeny, and I can only count about half a dozen or so left, who primarily hide under the large rock structure or plants in the tank. I've been told that the best thing to do is to take them out and put them into a growth tank, but really can't bear the thought of investing in/maintaining another item (along with my 2 preschoolers!). Few questions for you fish-pros: 1. Will these little fry be doomed if I leave them in the big tank with the hungry adults? 2. How in the world do I clean the gravel in the tank with these little guys? Will the Platy fry be big enough to be safely removed from the tank in a few weeks for tank cleaning? 3. Does the presence of these little guys prohibit me from adding more fish to the tank? (We were just getting our aquarium started...) Thanks for your advice!!! Perhaps I should just pretend that I never saw the little guys and let nature do its thing, but I thought I'd at least ask the pros for options. Thanks! more

Open Question: Unfiltered 4 gallon aquarium for female betta & friends?

I am in the process of setting up a 4 gallon aquarium, but I have been thinking about getting a female betta & ghost shrimp (2). That leaves each ghost shrimp 1 gallon and the betta fish 2 gallons. It is actually a 5 gallon tank, but the water level would reach to 4 gallons. It would be unfiltered, but I would do daily water changes with 100 percent change every weekend. (There will be a heater!) My question is, would that be okay for the ghost shrimp? I read they need filtered water, but since these creatures don't produce a ton of waste (The tank will be cycled first before getting them) and i'd have an air pump in the water, and enough hiding places, would this be safe enough for them? Thanks!Yea, I forgot that 100 percent can rid the tank of healthy bacteria. I'd just do 75 percent instead of 100. I was going to use the air pump for the ghost shrimp because I read they need that to breathe well enough. Thank you for correcting me on the water change. :)okay....! :) more

Resolved Question: Too big to be eaten by a Pictus Catfish?

Everything I've read advises that a PC will grow to a max size of 6". As well, everything I've read tells me the PC is carnivorous, but as long as a fish is too big to fit in to a PC's mouth, the PC will leave it alone. Here's my dilemma: No where can I find what "too big" (for a full grown PC) means. I would like to have a three PCs, as bottom dwellers, for my 75 gallon tank. I would like to have a shoal of twelve Silver Hatchet Fish, as top dwellers, for the aquarium. I've read SHF get to a max size of 3". Here's my question: Does a 3" SHF qualify as "too big" for a full grown PC's mouth? I'd also like to know if the fish's natural tendency(ies) to occupy different levels of the aquarium, which is 20" high, will play some part in cohesive community living. Thank you for any input you can provide.I just read some other sites telling me how big the PC will get. Now I'm looking at 10" in length. Open Question: Why did all of my neons die?

I have a 44 pentagon gallon aquarium that has been established for 9 months. It has 2 filters, one 40i and another 25-40i (both in tank.) It has 2 bubblers, and a live plant. I have a blue dwarf gourami (3 inches) 5 guppies (4 fancy tail males 1 female), 4 small glo-fish (about 1.5 in. each) and 6 neon tetras (small 1in.) A couple days ago, I got 2 more small neons and three small glo-fish (all about 1 inch.) Hardness is moderate (120 ppm), Alkalinity 120 ppm, pH 7.2, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 20. All fish that have been were in the tank before the new ones have been in there 5+ months. I do a 25% water change once a week, treat the new water with aqua safe, stress zyme, and nutrafin cycle (appropriate dosages) and scrape the glass of any algae growing. About once a month I change one of the filter cartridges, changing the opposite one every month. I feed them a variety of foods, alternating each day: flakes, pellets, granules, brine shrimp, blood worms, and krill. All the fish in the tank are healthy with much more vibrant colors than when I first got them. I try not to over-feed and fast them once in a while. When I got the new fish I floated them in the tank for 30-40 mins. I inspected the tanks at the store to make sure there were no dead fish in with them. When I released them I threw out the aquarium water from the store and put an extra shot of stress zyme and of cycle in the tank. Everyone is doing really well, except today when I went to do my regular water change, all but 3 of the neons were gone. I pulled out all decorations, did a water change and test and only found one body. Everything tested normal (as noted above.) One of the three neons was swimming funny so I pulled him out and put him in my hospital tank. Why did they all die? they were super happy before and all looked nice and healthy, ate good, etc. I spent about 20 mins on the phone with the pet store aquarist guy asking him questions but he couldn't really answer them. He said to put aquarium salt in my tank. I know you are not supposed to put a lot of salt in the tank if they are not used to it, but that's what he recommended. Help? I don't want the rest of my fish to catch something and die? I think I'm doing everything right, and even though it sounds like a lot of fish they are all small (except for the gourami) so I don't think the tank is over crowded. Again everything tested normal so I don't know what to do!!! Any advice from any experienced hobbyists out there?Update: now all 8 neons are gone, the three that were left died off one by one. =( more

Open Question: What type of fish could I have in a very small (1 gallon) aquarium?

I don't have very much space for the tank (dorm room living), but I'd like to keep a fish. Also, a snail would be pretty cool, but I have no idea about how much space they need. Can anyone recommend species of fish / snails that could live in such a small tank? Also, I do have an aerator, but do I need it for a 1 gallon? more

Open Question: Can you cover the three sides of an aquarium?

I was wondering if its a good idea to cover three sides of an aquarium(back and two sides). I have a 10 gallon aquarium with 8 fishes. Resolved Question: Help treating ich in a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium?

I have a 30-gallon tropical freshwater aquarium with the following inhabitants: -8 Zebra Danios -4 Otocinclus Cats -2 Boesemani Rainbowfish -8 Neon Tetras I put the neons in yesterday. They were healthy at the pet store (and had been at the pet store for about two weeks, so they survived shipping well), but this morning I noticed one or two white bumps on each of the neons. I examined all the other fish carefully (especially the rainbows... they cost $12 each) but did not see any signs of ich on them. I REALLY want to nip this in the bud before any of my other fish get infected. So today I did a 25% water change, turned off my carbon filter and lights, started slowly raising the temperature from 75°F (I'll get to 85°F in a few days), and added a Malachite Green treatment. As none of the other fish in the tank are infected, I only added the recommended dosage for tetras (which is half the recommended dosage for any other fish). So how to proceed from here? Should I start doing daily water changes? In what percentage? Should I continue adding a tetra-sized dose of Malachite Green daily without water changes? The instructions didn't specify... more

What should i name my baby catfish? idk if its a boy or a girl. so boy and girl names would both be acceptable. me and dad caught the lil sucker in the throw net trying to get bait for the trot lines when we were out on the river today. the fishy is about 3 inches long. and i put it in a aquarium that's now in my room. its a 10 gallon but only halfway filled with water. i put some rocks and pond plants in there for him so he's more comfterable. im thinking about putting a rock in there, then getting a veryy tiny baby turtle to be the fishy's friend :) more

Open Question: Information about a 25 watt stealth marineland heater for aquariums?

I bought a 25 watt stealth heater. I was wondering if it would work in a two gallon tank. I was also wondering how submerged it needs to be. It says that it has a safety shut off when it is out of the water; however, there is a piece towards the top where the dial is that is thicker than the rest of it. I was wondering if that part can be left out of the water.I would like one that keeps the water at 78 degrees compared to one that just raises the temp X amount of degrees warmer than it already is. more

Open Question: List of cold water aquarium fish?

There's a tl;dr down at the bottom, since this is fairly long-winded I'm looking to put together a small freshwater aquarium (10-20 gallons or less is about all I can afford, hence needing something small), and am looking for a list of relatively easy to care for, fresh, cold water fish. I already have 2 gold fish and 3 bettas (The bettas are kept separate, in warm-water, 2.5 gallon aquariums) so I'm looking at something different to keep things fresh. I've used up about all the outlets in my room, which I keep fairly warm for my hermit crabs and bettas (though they have heaters, the heaters are fairly weak to avoid roasting them), so this tank will be in the slightly cooler game room, hence the need for the fish to be tolerant of cooler temperatures. Besides that, if I hook up another filter-and-heater-and-bubbler-and-light setup, my parents will kill me over the electric bill. tl;dr: I need a list of fish that: Can be in a group of 2 or more in a 10-20 gallon aquarim Don't require a heater Aren't gold fish or betta fish Preferably, I would like to know fish that don't take a bubbler, but that's not a must I will research the fish individually myself, so you don't need to provide too many details unless you really want to.Also, if your answer is F-ing STUPID, don't waste my time or fill up my inbox. more

Resolved Question: Things I should know about keeping a betta?

I have a 10 gallon tank (cycled, heated, filtered) and would like to keep a male or female betta in it. What should I know about bettas? My brother has small pellets left over from when he had his betta and I'd feed it those, brine shrimp I've raised myself and possibly mosquito larva collected from aquarium water left outside my window. I've heard different things about bettas though. Some say that bettas prefer small, enclosed spaces. Some say the bigger the tank, the betta. Others say that if you put them in a tank you should have plenty of plants and hiding places for them. I know that the betta's natural environment is muddy rice paddies and ponds...But even though they're shallow, they span for miles in some cases. I've know that bettas get air from the surface of the water, but I also heard that they only do this when the oxygen level in the water is low...I've heard many things and I'm not quite sure what is true and what isn't. Fill me in? (: more
