Open Question: What can I put with my betta in 29 gallon aquarium?

Okay, I currently own a male betta, and I would like to upgrade to a community aquarium. I plan on getting a 29 gallon aquarium from PetCo. What fish (and how many) can I add to the tank? I would like some kuhli loaches if I can, and some common, easy-to-care-for species that won't clash with the betta. And if anybody has any filter recommendations, don't hesitate. And does my community aquarium need lights? I will not have live plants in it. Thanks for any info! more

Open Question: How to set-up a saltwater fish tank?

I have a 10 gallon freshwater tank set-up now. I want to convert that to an saltwater aquarium. I would like to have the type of tank that you could put corals and live rocks in. I have lighting hood, heater and a 10-15 gallon filter. What do I need to buy and what is the cheapest way to run a quality tank? Thanks you so much. Open Question: Aquarium kit question?

I have an aqueon 10 gallon aquarium kit. I want to know all the specs of the light that came with it. I could not find it anywhere on the box or instructions. Open Question: White hanging eggs (??) along two walls of my fish tank. Hundreds of them! What could they be?

I looked at my fishies today and noticed hundreds of little white "baggies" hanging from the sides of my tank at all water levels just "blowing in the breeze"; what in the world are they?! They are shaped just like this pirate hook ( http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.piratemerch.com/images/pirate_hook_58275.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.piratemerch.com/pirate-costumes-pirate-costume-accessories-c-58_50.html&usg=__Ea8u2GAGxuwNUIm3wcncuB7GvD8=&h=500&w=500&sz=16&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=yTgDgQo7oEJhwM:&tbnh=138&tbnw=142&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpirtate%2Bhook%2Bcostume%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us%26rlz%3D1I7ADFA_en%26biw%3D1003%26bih%3D577%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=522&ei=ONKHTMfDGoHCnAetm6iCDg&oei=ONKHTMfDGoHCnAetm6iCDg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=13&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0&tx=65&ty=93 ) in which the curved part of the actual hook is chopped off. Sticking with the picture, imagine: the nub part is frayed at the bottom and loose in the water; the stick/hook portion is stuck onto the sides of my tank. Each is about the size of the end of a pencil lead, and there are hundreds of them: OMG! The tank was just moved from home to my dorm on Aug 30th, so it is possible that something different is in the water here. I did travel with about 8gal of water or so from home, all the bacteria and wheel were preserved in water through trip, fish were transfered to hot-water-cleaned rubbermade container for transport and reintroduced to tank after it was back up and water running for about 5ish hours by being floated in baggies for about 20min. I did have an ick-scare (treated 29days with Coppersafe and sponge filter by marineland). Ick scare means I treat preventatively now for three days with Jungle's Ick Guard II 1xmonth (without carbon filter of course) bc I believe the parasites are in my water. No signs of fish distress, etc; everyone is perfectly normal. One fished died in hospital tank due to long-lasting, unknown, internal infection/parasite/bacteria(??)... there was nothing more I could do. ***My fishtank, freshwater, tropical community:*** -15gal tall Eclipse System 150gal/hr filtration -Access to sunlight, but not in direct sun at all (light is just bouncing off white walls lol). Hood's lamp is used to light and heat tank during the day. -Heated to a constant +/- 78-80*F by seperate heater always (lamp does so on its own). -7 Zebra Danios (5F 2M I believe) -2 Mystery Snails (1 F 1unknown) -2 Dwarf Gouramis (both F) -I think that we might have neamatoads (or whatever those little white worms are that come out at night) bc my mom's tank (same set up and water supply) have them. -Fish are fed any variety of Tetra's Bettamin, Tetra Min Tropical Chrips/Granuals/FD Shrimp and Tetra FD Bloodworms & Tetra Algea Waffers. -No live plants, etc. but tons and tons of fake plants and decorations including a new plant that cover 1/3 the tank's surface. -Tank floor is a mixture of sand, "pond rock"/larger stones, and gravel all from LFS and very very old sea shells that have been in our tanks for years. -API Aquarium Salt is replaced 1xmonth in a small pet-co cup Any comments or advice will be appreciated. ...I'm trying not to worry. Thank you :) SarahbethTo make it clear: there are no parasites/etc on the fish... just whatever this is stuck to the walls of the tank. Also, I don't know the water's quality but it was just changed this past weekend.Thank you for your reply, Tracy. Could you please clarify this: "More significantly, trying to kill a bunch of animals in your aquarium means you're going to end up with lots of decay, and that means poor water quality. Imagine if you killed off a nest of rats with rat poison, but just left the bodies to rot. Bad. The correct approach here is to ignore the worms, and instead control their numbers so the population dies back over time." Are you saying these things are worms? worm eggs? are you also saying don't kill them --or that I killed something, like the ick??-- and that instead just remove them with the PT method? also, so they're harmless and sorta beneficial... should I just leave them? I don't mind as long as the fish are gonna be okay. Sorry for the confusion! Thanks!!Sorry: nevermind Tracy. I understand what you are saying now. Thank you! Your comment makes sense :) more

Resolved Question: What kind of light should I use?

I used to have a Biube and a Biorb aquarium for my goldfish, and would keep the light on all day and off all night, and it never seemed to bother them. When I upgraded to my new HUGE goldfish tank, I put the light on that came with it. It was a regular florescent fish light. As soon as I clicked it on, they started freaking out. They were banging against their bridge and the sides of the tank. Once I turned it off, they were perfectly fine. What kind of light should I use so they won't do this? I don't want them to get hurt. more

Open Question: Aquarium stocking community opinion?

My tank is 10 gallons heated, filtered (20 g filter) and has an air pump and hood with light. It has been cycled and everything so no need to worry about that. I do weekly 25-30% and a good gravel vaccuum once or twice a month. Here is my stocking... 1 Dwarf Gourami (male) 1 Fancy Guppy 2 Platy 3 Julii Cory 4 Cherry Shrimp 1 Bamboo Shrimp So what do you think?Honestly Little Bitty (I assume you are talking about the size of your brain) Half of those things you said wont even work. You cant keep a male kenyi cichlid in a 10 gallon tank. Also, 15-30 bamboo shrimp would take up every amount of space in a 10 gallon, and there would not be nearly enough microscopic food for all of them to eat. So i recommend making your brain a little bitty bigger before commenting again. more

Hey! is there such lamp as a lamp which hooks onto one side of the tank because i seen one before which is attached to the tank by something like a clipper. ok the truth is,i wanna a clip lamp which is like 10 watts or 7 watts and it should just be able to light up the middle of the tank and thats ok alr i dont really need a long lighting material or whatsoever. 4.how to operate a mini aquarium lamp do i just plug in the plug and switch on or do i need light bulbs and etc for the mini aquarium lamp to work? ty for answering me! more

Resolved Question: Goldfish and aquarium plants??? help needed?!?

I have one goldfish in a 27 gallon tank. In the past I've had live plants but they were all eaten before they could grow. I'm thinking about getting a cheap 5 gallon tank or even just a bucket with a light to use as a nursery for the plants so that I can alternate them between the two tanks and give them a chance to grow. Btw, I'm going to use canadian pondweed (also called elodea or anacharis) Also, my goldfish is a fancy goldfish and I would like to get a common goldfish. I don't think competition would be much of a problem because he takes food from our hands. Are there any other problems associated? What do you think, and any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Saltwater aquarium owners!!?

Well this is my first saltwater tank and I have tried to do as much research as I can. I'm purchasing a 125 gallon aquarium that has 100lb of live rock, 100lb of live sand and a few damsels and shrimp in it already. It has metal halide lights, Fx5 filter. Anyway my question is about the fish I plan to gradually add. I want 2 false percula clowns, yellow tang, blue hippo tang, 2 firefish goby, flame angel, lawnmower blenny, green mandarin dragonet, pearly jawfish, pink tip conalactus arrow crab, scarlet hermit, emerald crab, feather duster, blue linckia star, and a purple urchin. I hope to add some coral at some point to. So do these all sound compatible, and any suggestions on what order to add them? What other actual fish can I add? Any other info you think I should know. Thanks, greatly appreciated! more

Voting Question: Ghost Shrimpies! I gots them.?

And one I think is a pregnant female. :D Anyone know what I should do to help her? She appears to be more bold than the other two. And bigger! The tank is filled to 5 gallons, it has a homemade filter right now with an air pump and two hideouts, AND a pretty orange plant with sand colored gravel. It looks like the sea, but for freshwater fish. The temperature will stay as room temperature - 68 at night and 73 during the day. I have 3 shrimp in there, 2 male and 1 female. Their is a cute little one in there that seems to stay to itself and the other two follow eachother around. Should I get 1 more so the little one isn't alone? I waited close to 1 hour with their bag floating in the water before opening it and letting them out. Okay, maybe it was 40 minutes...around that. But the tank has been sitting for a day before I put them in and I just added a few flakes in their (tropical flakes) for them to eat. They are just hanging out right now, exploring. Anything else I need to do? Their aquarium is set in from of a window with a cover, so they get plenty of light without too much. I still am gonna try to get fish netting as a lid for the aquarium, and a fluorescent light (Probably tomorrow!). Are they more active at night than the day? What is the healthiest food I can give them?OH, I forgot. Are ghost shrimp afraid or shy of noise? Because the air pump makes noises in the aquarium...if it ends up against something it is a bit noisy. I'd say low to medium sound. Thanks! :) more

Voting Question: Good low-light aquarium plants?

Any good, easy to care for plants that anyone could recommend for my Betta tank? I've got one of those "lily bulb" plants from Wal-Mart that is doing very well in this tank, but I'd really like to replace all of the silk plants with real plants. Preferably something that needs very little light, does well in ~80 degree water and doesn't need substrate. Thanks for any help. :) more

Resolved Question: Why is brown algae growing in my fish aquarium?

Brown algae is growing all over the sides of the tank and over the plants and little decorations. I just scrubbed everything in the tank on Sunday to clean it off and the algae is back again. I have a glass, 29 gal. aquarium and use the florescent light that it came with. The water is about 78-80 degrees and I have two filters in the tank cycling about 330 gph. I change about 20% of the water weekly and last week I changed 50% of the water. The aquarium is about two months old but I didn't have this problem for the first month and a half but now I can't get rid of it. What should I do to stop the growth of the algae and keep it from coming back? Is their anything I can put in the water to kill the algae so I don't have to scrub everything again? The fish seem perfectly normal but I would like to fix the problem before it affects their health. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Keeping a freshwater jellyfish?

Can I keep a freshwater jellyfish in a rectangular aquarium, provided that I create currents that will keep it from getting stuck in the corners? Also, how much filtration and aeration does a jellyfish need? What kind of plants can I put in with it? UVA bulbs or UVB bulbs for lighting? How much do they eat? Can I have feeding times, or does food need to be constantly available? Do they need to be kept in groups, or are they fine on their own? As for the legality of keeping a freshwater jellyfish as a pet, I've already asked, and it's fine. I'd just like to have something set up for it before I bring it home.Any books you can recommend? more

Resolved Question: Help treating ich in a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium?

I have a 30-gallon tropical freshwater aquarium with the following inhabitants: -8 Zebra Danios -4 Otocinclus Cats -2 Boesemani Rainbowfish -8 Neon Tetras I put the neons in yesterday. They were healthy at the pet store (and had been at the pet store for about two weeks, so they survived shipping well), but this morning I noticed one or two white bumps on each of the neons. I examined all the other fish carefully (especially the rainbows... they cost $12 each) but did not see any signs of ich on them. I REALLY want to nip this in the bud before any of my other fish get infected. So today I did a 25% water change, turned off my carbon filter and lights, started slowly raising the temperature from 75°F (I'll get to 85°F in a few days), and added a Malachite Green treatment. As none of the other fish in the tank are infected, I only added the recommended dosage for tetras (which is half the recommended dosage for any other fish). So how to proceed from here? Should I start doing daily water changes? In what percentage? Should I continue adding a tetra-sized dose of Malachite Green daily without water changes? The instructions didn't specify... more

Resolved Question: List of cold water aquarium fish?

There's a tl;dr down at the bottom, since this is fairly long-winded I'm looking to put together a small freshwater aquarium (10-20 gallons or less is about all I can afford, hence needing something small), and am looking for a list of relatively easy to care for, fresh, cold water fish. I already have 2 gold fish and 3 bettas (The bettas are kept separate, in warm-water, 2.5 gallon aquariums) so I'm looking at something different to keep things fresh. I've used up about all the outlets in my room, which I keep fairly warm for my hermit crabs and bettas (though they have heaters, the heaters are fairly weak to avoid roasting them), so this tank will be in the slightly cooler game room, hence the need for the fish to be tolerant of cooler temperatures. Besides that, if I hook up another filter-and-heater-and-bubbler-and-light setup, my parents will kill me over the electric bill. tl;dr: I need a list of fish that: Can be in a group of 2 or more in a 10-20 gallon aquarim Don't require a heater Aren't gold fish or betta fish Preferably, I would like to know fish that don't take a bubbler, but that's not a must I will research the fish individually myself, so you don't need to provide too many details unless you really want to.Also, if your answer is F-ing STUPID, don't waste my time or fill up my inbox. more

Voting Question: can you make a C&C cage for hamsters? but with mesh instead of grids? Please answer!?

So I have wanted to get a guinea pig but before that i was researching hamsters. If i can't get a guinea pig my next choice is a sweet adorable hamster. i was wondering if you think you can make a C&C cage for a hamster. instead of square grid i would use strong mesh grids and i would make a mesh bottle and mesh lid. On the inside i would make a coroplast bottom with sides. What do you think? Their would be a lot of ventilation but you can't see them and i'm not sure how much light gets through. What do you think? Please be kind in your answer. Its just a suggestion. if not i'll get a standard aquarium or maybe a reputable hamster cage. more

I googled it but really didn't find anything all that helpful and was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers on what plants were hardy and would do for a project like this. Any special type of water, lighting, substrate etc. I was thinking of something along the lines of a Very small aquarium with a small filter to give a kind of waterfall effect. Hopefully something with some river rock and moss for the bottom, with larger plants along the back. Is something like this possible? We have a lfs close by with a large variety of live plants, but I have no idea where to begin or what sorts of plants have the same needs as far as care. Any advice would be greatly appreciatedThanks, catx! Just signed up now and going to do some browsing. What I had in mind was more like an underwater forest for lack of a better word. Hopefully I can find a tall enough tank so I can fill it close to 3/4 full so the filter gives a waterfall kind of effect more

Resolved Question: Molly question. PLEASE help!?

I've had two black female mollies for about one month and two weeks and I decided to add a male molly to get them to breed. So, I bought a silver male molly, and when I put him in the tank I noticed he swam in a sort of "s" movement like how a snake moves. He also likes to rest on the bottom of my tank a lot. So I turned the aquarium light off ad 2 hours later I turned the light back on only to my two black mollies lying on tank bottom. Did my new silver molly have a disease or are they just tired from breeding? Because I don't think that disease can spread THAT fast. Can someone please reassure me? Thanks so much! and if it is actually a disease, can you help me figure out what it may be? I hope it's not a disease. None of the other silver mollies looked unwell in the tank I got mine in. more

Voting Question: What do I need to set up a ball python enclosure?

I am getting my baby ball python this weekend and wanted to know what basic things I needed to get to set up her tank? I have a 10 gallon aquarium for her enclosure. The breeder recommended a heat pad and/or rheostat/thermostat, gauges and a hide. If I get a heat pad, does this mean I dont need a heat light? What do all of these things do? Please explain since I am new to the snake world...So if I have a heat pad, I shouldnt need a heat lamp? Since it is only a 10 gallon? more
