Open Question: Can I use expired reef sand for my saltwater aquarium?
I have a new saltwater aquarium, but the live sand I bought turned out to have expired a few months ago. Does that mean that most of the bacteria has died off? Even so, shouldn't there should still be some, just not as much as before? Therefore, shouldn't I be able to use it, it will just take a longer time to cycle?

About two weeks ago, I bought a 40-gallon aquarium that came with a working hang-on-the-back filter, heater, ornaments and gravel. The gravel is pretty coarse: about 1/2"-diameter polished rocks.
I set up a decent fish tank for a while, with many fake plants and cute ornaments, and let it sit for a week. Then I bought six guppies: two males, four females. The day after that, two females died.
I was worried about my future guppy tank, but after doing some intensive research, I decided that I should have made a Cichlid tank to take advantage of how much my aquarium can hold.
I read that guppies were good for starting the cycle for a Cichlid tank, though, so I was happy I had still made that decision, even if it was for another reason.
I changed the decorations in my tank with the guppies still in it, so now I have a good Cichlid tank layout, with many rocks, that are stacked or formed into little caves or crevices. I have one fake plant behind the rocks in each corner.
However, I really want to make this Cichlid tank as perfect as possible, so I have a decent amount of issues:
-My current tank is 40-gallon, the temperature is 79-80 degrees, and the pH is 7.6
1. I am aware that the pH needs to be raised to 8.0-8.2, but I don't know the best way to do that safely without harming my guppies or anything. Also, the guppies can't really handle a pH that high, so when would be a good time to do it?
2. The guppies have been in for 2 days now. How long should I wait until the tank is fully cycled?
3. I fear that my gravel is much too coarse for Cichlids, who like to dig around alot. I want to buy a new substrate, preferably sand, but I really don't want to take out all the gravel on the bottom and then pour sand into the water to have it float around and cloud the water with fish in it. Would it be possible to put sand on the gravel? I don't have eggcrate on the bottom, but I feel like the coarse gravel supports the rocks well and protects the acrylic from them.
4. To raise my pH naturally, should I buy Aragonite sand, reef sand, etc.? What would be something that I could most likely put on my gravel and would raise the pH to about 8.0-8.2? I also have some dried coral, but I don't know if it will manage to raise the pH enough and then buffer it. If pH-raising sand is the better idea, please post a link or something on the Petco or Petsmart website (so that I can easily go buy it at the store. Also, note that I don't buy my fish at Petco, I go to a LFS).
5. What would I do with my guppies when my Cichlid environment is completely ready? Are they likely to get eaten, or could they co-exist with the first pair I put in? (They almost always hang at the top of the tank)
6. Is my filtration sufficient? I would like to spend as little as possible, but if better or additional filtration is necessary, please let me know.
I'm sorry for the long and horrifyingly specific questions, but I've had a lot of problems with fish tanks, and this is my first one with bigger fish, so I'm not ready to cut any corners anymore. Any help with any of these questions is truly and deeply appreciated- Thank you in advance! If more filtration is necessary, I probably would need something inside the tank, since 2 hang-on-the-back filters seems excessive.Forgot to specify- I'm going to get African Cichlids: most likely lake Malawi ones.Kenyi fish are what I'm aiming for as a start, followed by anything that can eventually accompany it and give color diversity in the tank. I haven't managed to find a compatibility chart, list or anything that can tell me compatible species of lake Malawi fish that will live in harmony. My understanding is that most Mbuna fish are able to live together, if the ratio of females to males is at least 4 to 1, and if the males are of different species and color than each other.
If I'm wrong, then I'll ask a question about Mbune compatibility.Mbuna* my mistake

moreResolved Question: What is so wrong with having a female as a roommate, other females to answer would be best?
anyone that knows California, knows that there are beautiful areas to visit and live and know that there is a huge valley section of CA which outsiders don't realize that it is pretty much the armpit of CA. I grew up on this coastal city of CA and love the beach, I don't know life without the beach and when I visit area's like Bakersfield or Fresno, and the such extreme toxic difference of the heat and air quality and simply no beach around, all this above is relevant because it will have it's play in this question.
4 years ago is when I moved out and decided to live in this condo, the condo is literally 100 feet from the ocean crashing into the rocks and it was my dream to find this place. Most places anywhere in this city, town for a 2 bedroom condo, a good size two bedroom is going for 12-1800.00 a month. I got really lucky getting this place 4 years ago and my rent is 1400 a month is a good price and split between two, a bit cheaper for the roommate cause I have the master bedroom and my own bathroom.
Her bedroom also has a sliding door to the balcony which is extreme ocean view and the bathroom which is down the hall way which also has a shower is hers, I don't keep anything of mine inside it, I told her she can do whatever she wishes with this bathroom. Her Dad wasn't very open with the idea of me being a guy but I am extremely clean and don't like clutter which she doesn't either, pretty much what I am saying is that she is a perfect hard to find roommate. Her dad met my parents and myself and checked out the whole place and over time we became friends, I am friends of her parents and we get along very well. This is a college town and she is going to college as am I and so we are just really good friends, we watch tv, movies together, she is like a sister to me and it has always been like this.
Anyways I met this girl about 1 months ago now and when I told her I had a roommate she was oh how is he and, I was like no she, and she is a very good person and she just becomes extremely irrational about it. me and my roommate are night owls, we enjoy movies and share some hobbies and my gf is disrespectful and simply rude to her, screams whenever I bring up her name. I spend a lot of time with my gf. even though she has to get up early in the morning to work she stays up on purpose and just simply stares pretty much, doesn't pay attention to the movie and she never enjoys watching tv series and movies anyways so I do with my roommate.
Same thing as a guy, I use to have a guy roommate and we would hang out, play games and stuff but he turned out to be a dead beat and started not to have money for rent. I just get extremely upset that she treats my roommate like this and said she is like a sister to me, a very good friend and I can't have you ruin this for me and have her move out. Her dad pays the rent and because he loves the location he pays me half for the place with bills included so I get a check for 900 a month which I wouldn't get from anyone else, so everything works out good except for the fact that my gf thinks it is not normal and absolutely crazy. I spend a lot of time to make the place look very nice, so first impression is like WOW this is paradise setting when really, yes it takes some money but I make it look like it because of class. The living room has my home theater and very large coral reef aquarium.
my gf, her family is from fresno and she goes to school out there but works at a good job here in the city I am at so she is only here for 3-4 days a week and it is always about my roommate this an that, I don't get why she doesn't enjoy her company, my roommate makes attempts to be very nice to her, but I think my gif is just jealous cause 1) she is rich - so my gf is just envy of her. 2) she is very attractive but doesn't come chill on the couch wearing a shirt and panties so I don't know what her problem is, gf problem.
Would you females have a problem with me if I had a very nice place, environment to me, means everything so I make it very nice to chill there and I spend a lot of time with my gf, take her out to places to eat, I cook, I always clean her car when she comes up cause she likes me to drop her off to work and drive her car back so I can spend time with her on the drive up. I always clean and make it spotless cause she makes it filthy dirty every time I see it each week. I drive back up, bring dinner with me so she can eat something on the way back down but she has a extreme issue of my roommate being female.she can hang out with me with all the time she wants in my room, she makes it a point which i don't even tell my roomie to do which she does anyway and will just stay in her room most of the time and when we get in, we can stay in the living room, kitchen and she won't even be around.. the second room is downstairs anyways where the garage entrance is and washer and dryer area and her room and the bathroom, my room is upstairs where my bathroom is in my room and the living room and kitchen are outside of my room. We have plenty of privacy and no I am not trying o have them be best friends or even friends, my roommate tries to be nice to her and friends with her by offering stuff.
My room is like the living room, I have a entertainment environment in my room with my computer and and everything inside. we don't have to whisper or anything cause the condo is pretty large and for her to hear anything you would have to travel through several walls and be upstairs, not like wall to wallI know it is unattractive by explaining so much but if you want to understand the situation it requires it, so if you take that me being clingy, I am far from it... I don't give a shit what my gf says and I mess with her when she acts like a jealous fool.
Being from fresno, I bring it up cause she brings it up all the time that she is hated cause she is around here and she loves to talk about the whole fresno/coast debate so wanted to include that cause like you said about them being conservative, idk, but to her the fresno thing is a big deal to her, not dissing fresno, I just say I would never live there. she brags about how she has a 5 bedroom house, sick of hearing that, really it is a dump and it is 3 bedrooms and 2 rooms are half fast mexican made in the garage and her house is a dump, really depressing being there.. when I say environment, ENVIRONMENT is a big deal to me, where you come to, where you live, you want to make it as comfortable as you can cause it is your escape

moreResolved Question: Help building a self contained reef aquarium?
My family has had a small (i think 18 gallon) reef tank for a few years now, and we've decided we want something bigger. My dad tasked me with coming up with a new tank, and said that it had to be self contained. He wants it to be about 50 gallons, with minimal input on our part.
I know that at every store we've been to for coral has had those tanks that basically run themselves. they have one part that grows the nutrients, another that you actually see that has all the coral in it, and as far as I know, they have the whole system automated, so they don't have to do anything but if anyone could confirm this, that would be great.
I want to build something like that (only one tank, though) that pretty much runs itself. I am pretty handy with tools, and plumbing is not a problem, but getting it as a kit would be much nicer. If anyone can give me tips on what I need, and anything that I have wrong, that would be great. also, any kits that would do this for me would be great also.

moreResolved Question: How can/should I stock a 5 or 10 gallon aquarium?
I am back to aquariums after a 1 or 2 year hiatus. I used to have a 55 gallon that has gone through 2 freshwater setups, and a saltwater. However, I finally had to break it down and give it away.
Anyway, now I am considering a much smaller setup, but I'm not sure how I want to go about doing it. Here are some of my ideas:
5 gallon:
1; one betta. I'm afraid I will get really bored with just one fish, so this isn't my favorite, just the most logical.
2, guppies. (no more than 5) This would be slightly more entertaining
3; nano reef (no fish). I've seen plenty of people do it, so I think its a possibility, and finding new critters in the liverock sounds like a lot of fun!
10 gallon:
1; one betta and a few cories. I've always loved cories, very entertaining to me
2; a few guppies and a few cories; my favorite idea for the 10 gallon
3; nano reef, with a single percula, and maybe have a 5 gallon refugium connected to it.
What do you guys think?

I've had my aquarium with fish for about 2 months now. The Nitrites are 0ppm, but the Ammonia in always .25ppm. It's been this way for a while now. I already bought beneficial bacteria at the petstore to help the cycling process. I really want to lower my Ammonia so I can get more fish. Nitrite is 0 and Nitrate is in a healthy level. They have been that way for weeks. Ammonia doesn't seem to change at all. I asked a professional at a pet store that he had been working with fish 10 years and had a reef tank. He told me to NOT do any water changes what so ever. Because if I do the cycling process will start all over again. So PLEASE HELP BEEN HAVING AMMONIA FOR A LONG TIME NOW!!!

moreResolved Question: Snowflake Eel Reef Safe?
I have got A LOT of conflicting answers from various people on this one so I figured I might as well ask here too. People on online forums typically say no to everything I ask and this was a HELL NO!
My mother's boyfriend has spent thousands upon thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours on many, many fresh and saltwater tanks in the past and he says he personally kept a snowflake eel in one of his reef tanks and it did not bother any of the medium to large sized fish/inverts, he said just use your head about the matter.
A lady a Petco told me he WOULD eat the smaller inverts and less likely, but possibly the small fish but just to stay away from inverts all together to be safe.
And like I said, online everything is a "no dont do it".
So has anyone here kept a snowflake eel in a Reef aquarium without any harm to corals/inverts/anemones/medium fish? I do really want the Eel, but not at the expense of introducing Godzilla(the eel) to Tokyo(a reef aquarium), if you catch my drift.
Also, if the Snowflake would possibly pose too much of a problem, is it possible that I could seek out a different type of eel or oddball fish to add to a community reef aquarium? Nothing that gets bigger than the snowflake though.

moreResolved Question: narcissistic personality disorder? NPD?
All in the family, come from a normal average family they do very well, the problems I am having is with my brother now, we pretty much had a fall out and I don't believe I will be talking to him for some time.
My brother drinks a lot, has had all kinds of drinking issues when he was younger and now his job he has has changed him a lot, being a firefighter he feels he is higher then other people, others are civilians and he is is a authority figure. When he comes to visit us which he lives hours away, will come and buy a hundred dollars of alcohol, drink get faded, drunk sometimes and act like a ass and a over emotional person with not being very coherent, his girlfriend does not drink but will smoke cannabis sometimes and when she brings up the drinking problem will get all mad and say he has no problem and that she is a drug user and uses cannabis, she does very well in school and is a biomedical chemist and he will go and tell my parents and alll kind of insecure stuff. cannabis is no big deal to me, even though my family does not use it, they know it is not a hard drug and she is responsible enough to use it and we live in a state where cannabis is not looked upon bad and pretty much legal.
Found out I used cannabis, I do fine, I am a engineer, computer sci student and I don't drink but he went and told on me and said I need counseling and made all these assumptions to my parents caused he searched my room and found a syringe with my coral reef aquarium which is used for the reef tank which the parents know all about but told them that I am a druggie and other people and pretty much my dad said to keep stuff like this in family and don't assume, and he gets all very angry and says you enable him and then he hates hearing about how he drinks too much.
He acts very confident and when he does not get his way he gets all mad like the wedding they are to have in a year, his girlfriend's family is putting 40 thousand so far into it and is mad that my dad is not putting 40k or in it too, my dad rather put the money into a house since houses out here cost around 700k and up for just a ok house.
I tell my dad he narcissistic and just thinks of himself even though he acts all nice to my parents it is because all the money they spend on him whenever he ask for it and when he doesn't get it he gets like a baby, I am very appreciative when they spend money on me and really feel bad sometimes, now he won't talk to me and thinks I am druggie daemon scum even though I made the mistake of protecting him when he was younger like 3 years ago when I found out he was using hardcore drugs and didn't say anything and now he wants to be like some hero telling on me for what I did...
I am sure some replies will say, u use cannabis, I am a junkie, I feel if you are smart and have will power and if it is for you and understand concepts and understand how a gateway drug works you will be fine like me and my brothers gf talks about.
When he told on me with all this crap I told my dad everything cause I was tired of this crap cause he thinks he is not a civilian and likes to bring all this drama to the table.
I forgot what I was talking about lol, have a broken neck and a cast right arm hand just go with the guestions withiun an dnswer awau

For an aquarium which is 18inches deep, what lighting is required to maintain a healthy reef aquarium?
I can't afford Metal Halides ;P So what would you suggest? The tank is only 2ft long so it's hard to find lights which are bright enough while still fitting the hood
moreResolved Question: Children and aquariums?
A friend of mine from Germany just sent me a message, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Her 5 year old thought that her fish looked sad, I can only guess at his reasoning when he added a box of cereal to the tank to cheer the fish up. Since the tank is a 6' coral reef tank worth many thousands I was just wondering at which point adoption is a suitable punishment for a 5 year old. A whole box of Rice Crispy's, she asked me if I knew how to fix the problem, ROFL. I told her to filter and skim like mad and do plenty water changes. I can't believe I am asking this but has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have any advice I can give her? She already said no to adoption and Ritalin.
moreResolved Question: brislte worm or nematodes??? WILL PICK BEST ANSWER . UNKNOWN HAIRY BLACK WORMS IN FISH TANK....?
hello... a month ago i took my crabs out of a 10 gal. tank and put them in a new aquarium . when i was about to clean my old aquarium out ( i added salt to my freshwater aquarium) i saw A LOT of flies in my tank . i got scared and decided not to clean it . a few moths later i brought feeder fish and because i couldn't house them with the crabs i decided to MAN UP and clean the tank out so i can place them in my 10 Gal. tank . when i looked in my tank all the flies where gone and i saw hairy black like worms that looks like it has SOME bristle on it . there were about 10 of them . i looked up on the internet and the only thing i could find was bristle worms and nematodes . KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE IS NO GRAVEL OR FISH IN THE 10 GAL. AND HAS NOT BEEN SINCE 2 MONTHS . when i looked up bristle worms i found that they normally live in reefs or aquarium's with sand or live rock I NEVER HAD NEITHER BEFORE . ONLY GRAVEL AND FAKE PLANTS. what could they be . i added bleach alternative to the tank , and they are still moving? what could they be?? i never had this problem before....

moreResolved Question: What are reef aquarium lights for?
I bought a 55 gallon tank, and had this asome huge light fixture. But
the lights were not the original white light, they were like blue-ish
or purple-ish. Saw this stamp on them and it said "Coral Sun". Wich I
guess is the brand. Any ways, I looked up reef lights on google and
pics with Salt Water aquariums with blueish light appeared. So I guess
the lights I have must be for something in a saltwater aquarium. But I
dont have saltwater!! I have fresh water, will this light hurt my
fish?? Or cause damage to the decor or plastic plants? I was planning
on getting live plants, will this light help plants grow? Or do I need
the white floracent light?? What are these lights used for exactly??
moreResolved Question: How can I grow plants in aquarium?
I just recently got this 55 gallon tank. And with it came this huge hood. It had 4 long lights on it. When the guy I bought it from showed me they worked, the lights where purple or bluish in color?
What are these used for? I searched them up, and found something named reef lights, witch are blueish purple aquariam lights. Are these the ones I have? If yes, will they over heat the water? Or burn or hurt my fish?? I dont have a saltwater tank, A freshwater one is what I have. Anyways, I was also wondering, are these the lights used to grow Real marine plants?? Because I bought these marine plant bulbs once, and put them in my 20 gallon, witch had an ordinary white light, and they never grew, so I guess I needed some special light. Will this blue light help the plants grow? Or how can I grow aquarium plants, live ones, not plastice, plastic ones got boring. Thanks for any help!
And what are the blue or purple lights for??

moreResolved Question: For the Shedd Aquarium, are discount days free or a smaller fee?
I really want to take my friend to see the belugas at the Shedd Aquarium, here in Chicago.
One of the discount days are on a day I don't to go school, so I thought it'd be perfect for him and I go together.
But, I'm not sure what's general admission... like what places. So maybe I'll take a trip there and ask about it, but I'd like some info before hand.
I know adult tickets cost $24.95, that includes: the newly renovated Oceanarium and Polar Play Zone, Wild Reef, Amazon Rising, Caribbean Reef and Waters of the World. (Would that be General Admission?)
It also says for 2 dollars more, I can include Fantasea in the package, which is what I want my friend to see the most, because of the belugas!
So if all that is General Admission, and I go on the discount day, does that mean those places are free and I just have to pay 2 dollars for Fantasea only?
OR, does the discount day mean that the prices are reduced? If so, how much?
:D Let me know, if not I'll be saving up money till then!
moreVoting Question: my girlfriend doesn't like people with money and I hate poor people lol...?
And no, I don't hate poor people - put there for a attention grabber so people can view my post, enjoy
My girlfriend does not know how to save money at all, expects me to spend money on a trip when I explained to her I am poor in the way I monitor my accounts. For instance, when I was 18-24 I had this system where I set limits, and during that time it was 8-9 thousand dollars and if I came near that number, I am in a danger zone until I did some more saving and increased my money above that limit, now and she thinks that is insane and she never heard of that before well I don't care if you think it is strange, that is how I budget my money. She believes I hate poor people because of this system. I have two expensive hobbies, my car which is probably I care more about then her and my coral reef aquarium which are my hobbies and I care about a lot, she thinks I should get rid of my hobbies, I said you are insane if you think I am going to, just because you think it is a waste of money, I can afford it and do what I want. I came down on her because she drives some pos kia which is wrecked and she owes more on it then it is worth and didn't get full coverage insurance on it, I said wtf, how can you get a car from the bank and not have full coverage and she is bragging how nobody where she is from does that and there is ways to get around it, I said well you are a idiot, now you drive a wrecked car which you owe more then its worth and you had some ghetto shop repair it. so after telling her this, she thinks I hate poor people. I was simply telling her, if you cant afford the car then you shouldn't be buying it, I told her my car cost me 27,000 and my car payments are 150.00 a month, and she doesn't get it and I told her that is why I never lose money on my cars, I pick cars that don't go down in value much and this and that... Tired of her profiling me irrationally by judging. She hates that I put all this money into my car, I just reply back to her saying I can afford it so what is the problem here. she comes from a wrecked family and never enjoys anything and has no hobbies at all. It all started because when a car next us pulled up and said hey your mommy and daddy bought you this car, I played around and said, yup and started calling them poor people lol, just to piss them off and she got soo pissed off, I was like what you didn't mind them calling me names and saying that my mommy and daddy bought this car, she just pisses me off daily with this bs.
moreResolved Question: Car enthusiast - girlfriend problems over it, common issue?
My girlfriend really gets on my nerves, I really don't care what she thinks cause I am not changing anything about myself to be with her, makes me mad when she judges, insult is the way I see it. and here is the story -
I am a car enthusiast, REAL car enthusiast, meaning not a Honda accord with a automatic transmission with a loud exhaust, and then go and hang out with a bunch of guys to brag and showoff and then go and drive reckless with a 20second qt mile car. This is how she profiles me, thinking I am being like some 17 year old with a "" hooked up car "" . She does not see the difference that my car, 05 Subaru STI, I get really into it and serious about this hobby and have spend serious money on this car modifying it, so I take her comments as a insult when she compares me does not care to listen and simply sees no difference between me and lets say her brother cause this is who she compares me too, a 93 civic, barely has money but doesn't do it for the hobby, just like so many others, younger guys that have no interest but sees that it is cool looking and throws on a exhaust, finds wheels but doesn't care if they fit right as long as they are on the car and cuts the springs to lower it with a assortment of crappy products. When I see him, thinks he is some gangster style acting and thinks he is bad. A lot of people give the hobby a bad image, get a lot of people that have some character pathology, narcissistic types that just do it to make the car look good, any real enthusiast knows what I am talking about, clubs that are usually associated with, at least the club I check out off and on is only cause I meet others like me and they don't allow any reckless and dumb driving and revving, all the childish stuff.
I just think she hates my hobbies, my other hobby is my reef aquarium - you think something like that you would find nice and what not but she just can't find anything negative to say about it, but has never said anything about it ever, weird. She has no hobbies and gets severely bored with herself and I like my independence with my hobbies.
