Open Question: How long after treating the water in a tropical aquarium does it go back to the normal colour?
The fish got white spot disease and I treated the water and its gone blue. How long will it take for the water to go back to the normal colour? And when can I put the filter back in?
moreOpen Question: Anyone Have Betta Fin Rot?
Ok, updated situation. This is day 5 of my Maracyn Two treatment for Betta fin rot, I add the last dose when i get home. Unfortunately yesterday the Betta developed another hole in his tail. So not only did the treatment not work, it got worse.
So I didn't know what to do. I added the TLC Start Smart that says it "instantly cycles aquariums". I'll do another water test when i get home. If the levels are good, I'll do a 10-15% water change and I don't know - add aquarium salt?
Do a 10-15% water change every few days? Treat with Maracyn Two again or maybe Tetracycline after a week or so?
I'm kinda lost here. I heard super clean water and aquarium salt can cure fin rot by itself. Do I even administer the 5th dose of Maracyn Two? Also, I read that I was supposed to take the charcoal (filter cartridge) out of my filter while medicating. If that's the case - why doesn't it say that on the package??
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.I heard about the salt bath. I have to pick up some freshwater aquarium salt and see what i can do. I also heard the Betta-specific medicines aren't that strong. And again, if I'm supposed to take the charcoal out of the filter when medicating - why doesn't Maracyn put that on the package? How important is that if it's not in the directions? Where did people get that info?
Sorry. This is my first fish and I did everything wrong. I just want to keep him healthy and alive at this point.
moreOpen Question: aquarium plant problems...?
Ever since ive added my new plants, and moved my tank, EVERYTHING seems to be going wrong. Half the plants are dieing, and the others just aren't growing. The tank is a 29 gal, with a 65watt coralife (6700K) and a flora glo 20watt. Making the tank almost 3WPG. The water is set for 78 degrees F, and I have a DIY c02 system setup, which runs into the impellar of a power filter motor. There is also an eheim canister filter, and I use a special flourite gravel.
I dose the tank with flourish (once a week) and iron (once a week).
The plants i'm having problems with are my:
chilensis (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+1626&pcatid=1626)
moneywort (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+809&pcatid=809)
cabomba (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+796&pcatid=796)
Basically, the chilensis is either turning almost a red/brown colour (but not rotting) in the new leaves, and the old leaves are semi rotting at the tips and just dieing off.
The moneywort is just loosing leaves which seem to be rotting off, but any new growth they experience is doing great, with nice colour and everything.
But the cabomba is doing worst of all, because the bottom half was brown when I bought it, and all the bottom leaves have fallen off. But again, any new growth at the top is experiencing good strong growth.
The only thing I can think of is someone suggested im not dosing macro nutrients (NPK) or my c02 is not strong enough. But I only recently set up the c02, and ive had most plants before, but they never died like this. I am only running one 2L bottle for c02, and it produces I would say 1 bubble every 2-5 seconds.
Oh and almost ALL of my plants, except for my anubias, has almost root rot, but there not rotting, just turning brown and not healthy looking.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, ive put all this hard work and money into this tank, and I really just want to know whats wrong.

Ok So I've got a 29 gallon aquarium with 2x 30 gallon filters, an airstone, and I do regular water changes. I plan on having by the end of my stocking I plan on having: 3 boseman rainbows, an african dwarf frog, a platy, a dwarf gourami, a cherry shrimp or two, and an angelfish (yes it may eat my shrimp). Soooo my problem is that I have room for one more fish. But I can't find one that I want. This fish should be 1-3 inches big. I want a really interesting fish that you wouldn't consider your typical petco's beginner fish. Something REALLY cool. Something that will actually bond with me (like the angel will) not a ditzy fish that only eats (i.e. a platy) Any suggestions? cuz id love an idea! (no invertebrates please. unless there's a freshwater starfish lol)
moreOpen Question: Aquarium filtration? Is this to much? Help please!!?
Would 720 gph pump circulation be to much for a 55 gallon freshwater community tank?
I have a Cascade 700, rated at 185gph, and its not doing too great of a job... if I added a cascade 1500 canister with it, with both filters running, the cascade 700 with carbon and floss mesh pads, and the 1500 with mostly floss mesh pads, and some bio rings.
The two filters would be completely changing the water in the tank 13 times per hour...
I've always heard you can't have to much filtration.. is this true?
My only worries is that it may be to much current in the tank, and the fish might have to fight the current to swim, and couldn't relax any... lol
Help?

moreOpen Question: How do I cycle my new 20-gallon glass tank?
Okay, so I'm a beginner hobbyist who didn't understand that new aquariums needed to broken in with a process called the nitrogen cycle. I was misled by a pet store employee because he had told me all I needed was a Penguin filter, Prime Conditioner, and Tetra EasyBalance to get started and add fish after a day or two. I treated the 20-gallon tap water with Prime Conditioner and Tetra EasyBalance and installed the filter approximately 36 hours ago. I'm planning to get a much-needed submersible heater with 100 watts. Please tell me if there is a need for any other actions because I'm pretty sure I screwed something up. Additionally, it would be extremely helpful if you give me some accurate, expert advice of what to do next and how to cycle my new tank. Thank you!

moreOpen Question: High ammonia in my aquarium?
I have a 60 litre tank with 4 small fish in it. I have a Juwel filter that came with the tank, gravel, a fake plant, a decoration and a little tube 'house' for the fish. Its a 5 week old tank and the water tests had come back perfect everytime, except for the last week or so. The ammonia jumped up to 4 and today it was at 8. Ive done several water changes and used ammo lock and AmQuel + at various stages. When I change the water I always add cycle and aqua plusand have the water at the same temperature as the water in the tank. I used Interpet 'anti internal bacteria' medicine about 2 weeks ago as another fish I had died after only 2 days and I removed the carbon and zeolite filter as instructed. I have replaced both the white filter sponge and the carbon sponge since getting the tank and I cleaned the zeolite sponge today to see if it would help and so far the ammonia level hasnt dropped. I've left the blue sponge at the bottom alone. If anyone has any idea's of what I could do to reduce the ammonia I would be very greatfull. Im really worried about my little fish.I have a dwarf gourami, a molly, a platy and a small upside down catfish. I had the tank running for about 5 days before I put in my gourami, and Ive added the others gradually over the remaining weeks. Ive been doing partial water changes each week since having the tank. I give the fish a flake each once a day and I watch them to make sure they eat it. The instruction manuel for my filter says that the white pad is just for collecting big particles and that the blue sponge is where the bacteria live.
moreOpen Question: What kind of (and how many) fish can a 15-gallon aquarium hold?
I'd like them to be tropical and colorful. It's a 15-gallon aquarium with a filter, a water-testing vial, etc. So, what kind of fish can be kept inside of it? How many? I'd like to have a splash of colorful fish and quite a few of them, if I could. Thanks!
moreOpen Question: Fish Stocking For My Aquarium?
OK So ive got a 29 gallon aquarium. I'm an intermmediate aquarist so I'm not naive about fish care or anything. I've been doing this for a while. But I've got an aquarium with one Neon Dwarf Gourami (3.5 in) 3 Bosemani Rainbows (4in ea) An African Dwarf Frog (1.5in) and I plan on adding a Bamboo Shrimp (2.5 in) and an Angelfish (6 in). So this would basically max me out for the 1 inch of fish to gallon rule. The thing is, I perform weekly 30% water changes and have two water filters (Tetra Whisper 30 Gallon & Aqueon 30-45 Gallon) and have an air stone on top of that. This technically provides my aquarium 60-75 gallons filtration and provides abundant oxygen. I was seeking personal adivce as to if you believe I could add more fish, and if so how many inches of fish. Every situation is different with how you can stock an aquarium depending on the factors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

moreResolved Question: What type of fish should I add to my saltwater aquarium?
I have a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium setup. The nitrates are close to zero, ammonia is at zero, PH fluctuates between 8.3-8.4, the salinity is at 1.024, i have adequate lighting, mechanical filtration good for 20 gallons, and biological filtration good for 50-70 gallons, the ALK is a little high... but I'm hoping it will regulate itself. I have two (2) of the Aqua Clear 30 gallon power heads... making for 60 gallons worth of wave-making and circulation... along with the agitation from the filters. The tank has been setup for about a month mow, and the live rock is growing stringy algae on it if you look closely, and the glass is now starting to get circular algae on it as well.
I just put in two damsels about a week ago, and they look to be doing fine... except they like to hide under/in/behind the rocks. I also have a live sand bed in the tank that is about 1/6 of the whole tank (it's about 3" high).
Would it be safe to start adding fish into the tank (besides Damsel)?
Should I try coral? I know that coral is hard to keep... but I think I'm up for it...
What fish would be good for starting?
How/what would I fees them? Because the water circulation obliterates flakes... so what types of sinking food should I get?

moreResolved Question: What fish are good for my tank?
I have this tank http://www.petco.com/product/109840/PETCO-Mini-Aquarium-Kit.aspx?CoreCat=FishFC_Tanks. I don't want bettas. I used to have an ordinary goldfish in the tank. I want more than one fish, but I don't want them to be aggressive; I want them to get along. Before I had the regular goldfish I had 1 gigantic goldfish (i mean huge, like a mutant fish) and one tiny black Moore goldfish. As you can tell the large goldfish ripped the tiny goldfish to pieces. I'm not cruel my parents forced me to put my brothers fish in the same tank I'm not cruel I love fish. I was thinking maybe some neon tetras, But I've read they'll get hurt because of the strong filter. Some of the reviews said their betas got sucked up in the filter. I really want neon tetras. How many can my tank hold? Is the tank safe for them? And I don't want the fish to have babies. Any suggestions on what I should do? I would possibly be willing to get a new tank for around 25 dollars ( more or less) no more than 50 dollars for sure! Sorry for the long question I just want to make sure I'm getting the right fish.

moreOpen Question: i need some betta/platy/mollie advice, am i doing anything wrong? just want to make sure?
i have a blue betta that i got 3 days ago, it seems to have black on the tips of its fins that seems to be growing further up the fins? what is it? he is also very sluggish and remains at the bottom in one or two spots and will go up for air real fast then dart back down to the same spot.
I have a ten gallon tank with a small 5 gallon filter to minimize current so as to not stress him out. along with a 25 watt heater set to 80.
Before i bought the betta i bought two corys, and 4 platies, however walmart ended up giving me 3 mollies and 1 platie instead of four platies(im a little worried for the plattie, its a female and she seems lonely should i get more platies? to make her feel better?) the platie also seems to have fin rot, and one of the mollies had dropsy so i isolated it. however it still died. seeing the fin rot and dropsy. i went ahead and added a tablet of jungle fungus clear to the aquarium.
just so u know i have lots of plastic plants in the aquarium along with one smaller live plant. The tank is a NEW ONE!! and i filled it with tap water and allowed it to sit for a week before buying the the fish and the betta
after allowing the corys and mollies/platy to get used to the tank i slowly let the betta observe the other fish from the clear cup i bought it in and allowed it to adjust to the water. about an hour later i let the betta in the water.
So far no one is nipping at anyone, all the fish are swimming around great and eating, the platie still seems a bit week and tends to stay towards the top throughout the day however at times shell go explore and appear just fine. the first day she ate, however today she ignored the food..is she ok?
today i tested the tank just incase somthing was wrong, and the ph seemed to high, so i added a ph control tablet to set it to a 7.0 ph..i also did a 25% water change because i have read that the black edges on the betta could be due to ammonia, and already he appears to be doing alot better and actually went exploring around the tank for a little bit, however he still wont eat pellets or dried blood worms. How do i get him to eat??
is there anything else i should know on how to keep the fish alive and looking pretty and active?
i also got another mollie bringing it to a total of 3 mollies, 1 plattie(should i get more?) 2 corys and a betta. i do have 2 male mollies? is that a problem? they dont seem to be fighting or agrivating the other fish

moreResolved Question: Please help, my Betta has fin rot?
Got the betta in a vase with a plant on top from a wedding. Did research, found this was awful. Bought a 10 gallon tank, filter, heater - set it up, put the betta in 24 hrs later. Then found out about cycling the tank. Didn't know I should have done that first.
Did A 25% water change 1 week in. Betta started flaring fins and gills the next day. Got scared, did another 25% water change the following day. Rubber banded an extra charcoal filter cartridge to the outtake of the filter because the current was knocking him all over the tank. Now, 4 days later, he has fin rot. Bought a master test kit, Maracyn Two and Melafix. Also bought "TLC Freshwater Start Smart" that's supposed to "instantly cycle aquariums".
Readings - Ammonia - .50/1 ppm, Nitrites - .50/1 ppm, Nitrates - 0/5.0 ppm, PH started at 7.2, now 7.6.
Which medicine is better? Do I do another water change before I administer the medicine? Do I administer the medicine completely and then add the Start Smart? Will the Start Smart harm the betta? I wish I knew more before I got him but now I just want to fix the problems so he can be healthy and happy. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.Did a 25% water change last night, added Maracyn Two, will treat with that for 5 days to see if it works then do another 25% water change. Might add aquarium salt as well, due to good reviews. Don't want to use the Smart Start until I'm sure Maracyn Two won't kill the beneficial bacteria in it.
I asked the guy at the fish store (mom & pop, not a chain) and he tried to tell me Bettas don't need a heater. So there's THAT level of trust goin' on. SO I thought I'd ask you guys.
I think when I put a cartridge over the filter outtake during cycling, it slowed the filtration down - causing dirty water quicker than normal and thus - high ammonia & nitrites = fin rot.
Then again, could be stress. I'm just worried about him.Well, you're not really supposed to cycle tanks with fish in them. It's kinda mean to the fish, whether they're "hardy" or not. Apparently it decreases their lifespan and makes them vulnerable to disease (like fin rot). If I don't change the water my Betta could get more damaged.
The Maracyn Two says to treat for 5 days and then change the water. I'm afraid to wait even the five days but I figure they know better than I do and I don't want to remove any of the medicine that might heal the infection.
After the treatment I'm gonna add the Start Smart and monitor levels daily to see if it works. Hopefully I can get him through this. I do have him heated at 78-79 degrees. I don't remove food he doesn't eat because it sinks too fast but I wait to get his attention before I feed him so he usually eats exactly what I give him.

I just set up and cycled a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium with live rock. All chemical readings are normal except pH.
My pH is ~7.80 and has varied through that number throughout the cycle.
I added a few damsels to my tank a few days ago and they're doing fine - they are eating, and they look healthy.
I have a Marineland Eclipse filter hood on top of the tank, as well as an internal mini skimmer - I also use RO/DI water and Instant Ocean salt mix.
I also have an aragonite live sand bed (about an inch or so deep)
I went out to the LFS and bought some pH+ by Brightwell Aquatics, and I've already done two doses and seen very little change in pH.
This makes me think that maybe the alkalinity in my tank is low? or could something else be going wrong?
Any ideas?

moreOpen Question: Velvet? Fin Rot? HELP!?
55 gal aquarium, set up for aprox. 2 months
4 African Cichlids
I recently set up my 55 gal tank with filter media from a healthy 30 gallon tank. I started with just one fish, who had been living happily and healthily in the 30 gallon for 6+ months. I then bought 3 more fish and quarantined them in the healthy 30 gallon for almost 4 weeks. Seeing no signs of disease or stress, I moved them in to the 55 gal about a week ago...and now, all of the fish in the 55 are sick. I thought I did everything right in setting up this tank, but obviously not.
The fish have been eating well and acting normal up until last night. When I went to turn off the tank lights, I noticed that one was very inactive and hanging near the surface. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that all four fish were behaving oddly. One has clamped fins and is not moving much. One is hanging around near the surface with slimy-looking white patches on the skin and frayed/disintigrating fins. One has frayed/disintigrating fins and looks as though he has been covered in a very fine layer of white dust. The last fish has only the dust look. (It is not ich -- there are no isolated white spots.)
Last night I gave all 4 fish a salt dip and have medicated the tank with Melafix and Pimafix (yes, I removed the carbon). I also added aquarium salt. Suspecting a possible velvet infection, I also started API General Cure this afternoon. I went to two different pet stores that told me two different things (my local fish store is closed Sundays, so I had to go to the big box pet stores where the workers are clueless about fish), so I have no idea if I going in the right direction with this. HELP! Advice wanted!
Just FYI: I did my last water change 3 days ago and replaced about 1/3 of the tank water, which is my normal amount. I tested the water last night. Ammonia is 0, Nitrite is 0, Nitrate is between 5 & 10, Ph is 7.8.I also noticed a fine layer, kind of like white dust, on the tank decorations, rocks, and the filter intake tube. There are also small white things on the glass that look like almost-microscopic threads. At first I thought it sand had been kicked up during a water change and settled on the decorations, but on closer inspection it's definitely not sand.I didn't just dump the fish from the 30 into the 55 gallon -- I put them in bags and floated them for about 15 minutes so they'd adjust to the temps. Also, with fin rot, don't the fins usually turn black at the ends? That's not happening here.
moreOpen Question: Homemade aquarium hood with light...?
My tank is 55 gallons long, with a hanging filter on one end.
I'm looking for suggestions on how to create a homemade hood with light. My father is a woodworker, so we have ample tools and wood to create it.
Website suggestions work as well!
Thanks
moreVoting Question: How should I change/filter water in a 100g Aquarium?
So basically, I'm redoing a whole room in my house. I'm going to get a 100g aquarium in the room because I've wanted one for a long time. The problem is that I don't think it is very efficient to siphon out water into a 2g bucket 10x and then fill the bucket with water, add chemicals, and pour the water in 10x. Is there any better way to do this? Also, I have a sink within 10 ft of the tank, but I don't know if anything can be done with it for the changing water process.

moreResolved Question: Dawn dish soap in a Glass aquarium?
I tore down my 30 gallon freshwater aquarium about 2 months ago not anticipating that I would want or need it set up in the near future. Unfortunately, I forgot about the under-gravel filter, and after getting all of the rocks out, the bottom of the tank was -covered- in mold (most definitely not algae).
I cleaned the entire aquarium with Dawn dish soap, rinsed it 5 times after not seeing any suds, then did a double rinse with a high concentration of aquarium salt water followed by another clean rinse. I filled the tank 7/8 of the way, treated it with Smart Start and set up the filter and heater to help the tank start cycling. I also added 3 T of aquarium salt. I haven't put in the Bio Wheel yet because I don't want to run the risk of contaminating it in the event there is even a minute risk that the Dawn hasn't been neutralized.
Should the tank be OK after sitting 3 days to add the Bio Wheel without running a risk to the future residents of the tank, or should I clean it again with something else and start over to be on the safe side?
My African Peacock Cichlid is carrying a brood as of last night and plan on putting her and her fry in this tank in 2 1/2 weeks (this is her first brood). My other tank has 8 other 4" + cichlids in it that would love to eat them and I'd like to give her a chance to recouperate before returning to the main tank.
moreVoting Question: Aquarium PH questions? Help?
So i recently got my Betta's Fin rot under control. 90% of his fins grew back. :))
I am constantly checking the ammonia levels because thats what caused the fin rot.
I hadn't thought about checking the PH as often because i was unsure how that changed.
I started to see some shredding again and freaked out of course. I checked the ammonia which was where it needed to be.
But i read the PH test and that came up extremely low. The test said 5.5. The lowest it reads.
I would like to know::
What lowers PH?
Is this damaging my fins that i worked hard to get back?
Will using "PH up" fix this, or cause more harm than good?
If PH up wont work? What will? because i want to stop this quickly.
Please Help. Thanks :)

moreVoting Question: My male betta is losing color?
I've had my betta in my 10 gallon aquarium for months now and he's just starting to act differently. He's lost color, he's been lethargic, today he refused to eat... He moves around just fine when he needs to (aka, whenever the filter moves him out of the tree he's sleeping in) but he's not acting like himself.
His tank is filtered, heated, is always around 80 degrees and is generally always clean. What do you think could be wrong? Any suggestions to get him to feel better?
moreVoting Question: How do I fix a build-up problem with my fish tank filter and hood?
I have had a 10 gal. fish tank for about 6 years. The fish are doing very well. About a year ago our original filter that came with the tank broke. I bought a replacement filter. But with the new filter I began noticing an immediate huge increase in the amount of white crusty deposits building up. around the top of the aquarium, the inside of the hood, and even on the wall behind the filter. It got so bad that the hood light stopped working. I bought another filter and a new hood about 6 months ago. The problem still persists and now my new hood lights have stopped working already.
Do I have the wrong filter? I made sure that the filter said it was appropriate for a 10 gallon tank. Do you have any suggestions for fixing this problem?
moreVoting Question: my blood parrots are not eating or swimming?
About three days ago I was cleaning the gravel and doing a 25% water change in my 20 gallon tank. I only have two blood parrots and one algie eater in my tank. When I was cleaning my tank a few days ago one of my two small external filters stopped working. I immediately went out and bought a brand new external filter for my tank. The new filter is for a 20-40 gallon tank. I did leave my one working filter on the tank also. The day after I added the new filter and changed some water, I noticed that my two blood parrots will now not eat and they are just sitting in one spot with their nose in the gravel. They look very sick, which is not like these guys. Today I talked to the pet store where I bought them and they advised me to add some nitrifying bacteria to the tank. I also today added some aquarium salt to the tank, but I have not yet noticed any changes with the fish. Will this take some days for them to get better or what should I do now, I'm worried about my blood parrots. They are normally big eaters and very lively. Please somebody help me out here. PS. I did check the PH and it is at about 7.0 and the anomonia is between 0 and 0.25. FYI
moreResolved Question: DIY aquarium decor ideas?
I bought a fake, neon cave, and when I cleaned my tank to let my new DIY filter cycle, I put in the new cave. Some of the paint came off in the water, making me think it is not safe for the fish. So I want to make my own cave but I want it to be big enough for a medium sized goldfish. I also want ALL the ideas one could think of for DIY aquarium decor, from fake plants, to caves, to little signs that say "your not in kansas anymore" and what not. thanks

moreResolved Question: My new Platies are acting weird and have weird poop?
I just got new platies, and I've never kept them before, so I don't know if any of this stuff is normal... I have a female mickey mouse, and a male and female high fin, as well as 6 glow fish, all in a 12 gallon hex tank with a regular filter and an undergravel filter, a couple ornaments, and dense foliage on the corners for scaredy fishes. I've only had the platies for 2 days, but I'm a little worried for them, because, as I said, I've never hosted platies before. The females are very skittish and one has staked out some territory inside an aquarium ornament. They also freak out whenever I come near the tank. They've also had really weird poop, it's red and brown and hangs on to the anus, which scares me a lot. Am I just being to anxious, or do I have something to worry about? I'm treating the tank right now with some prophylactic antibiotic/antifungal/antiparasite medicine, just in case.

moreVoting Question: low pH in saltwater aquarium?
I just set up and cycled a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium with live rock. All chemical readings are normal except pH.
My pH is ~7.85 and has varied through that number throughout the cycle.
I added a few damsels to my tank a few days ago and they're doing fine - they are eating, and they look healthy.
I have a Marineland Eclipse filter hood on top of the tank, as well as an internal mini skimmer - I also use RO/DI water and Instant Ocean salt mix.
I know I can purchase chemicals like "Proper pH 8.2" by APi, but I'm a little skeptical on adding chemicals to my aquarium -- I would rather the pH naturally stabilize... but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.
Any ideas?
moreResolved Question: Is it safe to add fish to my tank?
I just put in two damsels today, and they look to be doing fine... except they like to hide under/in/behind the rocks. I also have a live sand bed in the tank that is about 1/8 of the whole tank (it's about 3" high).
Would it be safe to start adding fish into the tank (besides Damsel)?
What fish would be good for starting?
How/what would I fees them? Because the water circulation obliterates flakes... so what types of sinking food should I get?
Thanks in advance for your help!
