Open Question: Ghost Shrimpies! I gots them.?

And one I think is a pregnant female. :D Anyone know what I should do to help her? She appears to be more bold than the other two. And bigger! The tank is filled to 5 gallons, it has a homemade filter right now with an air pump and two hideouts, AND a pretty orange plant with sand colored gravel. It looks like the sea, but for freshwater fish. The temperature will stay as room temperature - 68 at night and 73 during the day. I have 3 shrimp in there, 2 male and 1 female. Their is a cute little one in there that seems to stay to itself and the other two follow eachother around. Should I get 1 more so the little one isn't alone? I waited close to 1 hour with their bag floating in the water before opening it and letting them out. Okay, maybe it was 40 minutes...around that. But the tank has been sitting for a day before I put them in and I just added a few flakes in their (tropical flakes) for them to eat. They are just hanging out right now, exploring. Anything else I need to do? Their aquarium is set in from of a window with a cover, so they get plenty of light without too much. I still am gonna try to get fish netting as a lid for the aquarium, and a fluorescent light (Probably tomorrow!). Are they more active at night than the day? What is the healthiest food I can give them?OH, I forgot. Are ghost shrimp afraid or shy of noise? Because the air pump makes noises in the aquarium...if it ends up against something it is a bit noisy. I'd say low to medium sound. more

Open Question: help i just got a fish !?

I just got a female betta fish from the pet store with a starter tank and all that. My water's been sitting for about an hour now with conditioner, and i have the gravel and plant in the aquarium and everything so is it safe to add the water yet or should i wait another hour or so to add it to the aquarium ? Also, the pet smart lady told me to add the fish to the tank and not to bother with letting the jar float in the tank for a while (the jar wont fit actually.. its a very narrow tank (4 inches or so..) so can i just add the fish and its current water to the new tank. It's a 3 liter tank by the way. Also, do i need to feed the fish blood worms because i didnt buy any of those yet but ill go buy some if i need too .. any help is apprecitated thanks :)this is my first fish by the way so im a bit worried im going to do something wrong and kill her.should i put the fish and the water into a ziploc bag to let it float in the tank for a while ? to get used to the temperature and stuff ? more

Open Question: HELP!! GUPPIES POSSIBLY DYING!?!?!?

Today i put my guppies into their new 10 gallon tank. Before they were in a 1 gallon bowl and 2 gallon tank- which was to small so i upgraded. Yesterday i set it up and let it run for 24 hours then put the fish in today. They don't seem to be doing well at all they seem horrible and i don't know why. i have an undergravel filter fit for like a 2-3 gallon tank in there and another filter (not undergravel) which i don't know the "type" of (im not much of an expert) that is fit for 5-6 gallons. It seems to be making a little bit of a current in there which they don't like very much, but i need the filter in there. I also have an airstone in there so the undergravel plus airstone should be making plenty of airation for them... They don't seem well now, before they were very happy. i aclimatized them right... i floated them in the new tank and dumped in a little water from the tank then floated them some more... etc. There are plenty of plants and decorations in there for them to hide in and gravel. The water is also dechlorinized so i don't know what the issue could possibly be. There aren't many fish in there. Three normal sized guppys that you would buy at the pet store and 6 very small "feeder" guppies that i would say probably like 3 would make the same amount of waste that one normal sized guppy would make. So I guess you could say that there are "about 5" guppies in there if that helps. All that they do is sit at the surface in one big Clump of guppies and don't move... they also won't eat any food at all for some reason. I don't know what happened to all to them and i'm worried that they might die here soon. What is going on? does anyone know? And oh ya i have a heater now and aquarium slat in there- before there tank/bowl wasn't heated if that has anything to do with it but acclimatizing them should've been fine with that. Anyways please help i don't know whats wrong.! more

Resolved Question: Nitrite/Nitrate help?

Info: 72 gallon freshwater aquarium, 3 months old, waited a month before adding fish (1 lg. severum & fostered a few platys & mollies for family for short time), levels always good, weekly water changes of 20%, partial gravel vacuum, and I do not over feed. UNTIL now... added 4 cichlids >4" along with our 8" severum and I can not bring my levels down, no matter what. Pet store told me that I shouldn't change the water as often, change one filter cartridge at the time days apart (i changed both ev. 2 wks.-month) and to use a nitrate remover, which I have and it's done nothing at all. I used a 5-N-1 test strip test and the levels was off the chart. The pH is accurate. I can't add plants, the fish will destroy them. I've tried a privately owned pet shop & a chain to get help and no one can give me an answer to help me get it straight. Please help! more

Open Question: How can I help my betta Fish's tail heal?

Hi! I recently got a betta fish. He is absolutely beautiful and a great fish. However today i noticed his tail was torn when it had not been before I left for school. The only thing I have in his aquarium is a real plant that is long and stiff with leaves, and gravel. Could that have done it? Should I take it out? How can I help his tail heal? THANK YOU SOO MUCH! more

Resolved Question: Attn: Fish Pros! Platy fish had babies - can they survive if I leave them in 10 gallon tank w/other adults?

We just added 3 platies & 3 long-finned tetras to our newly established tank last week, and noticed that one of the platy fish had babies this week! They are SOOOO teeny, and I can only count about half a dozen or so left, who primarily hide under the large rock structure or plants in the tank. I've been told that the best thing to do is to take them out and put them into a growth tank, but really can't bear the thought of investing in/maintaining another item (along with my 2 preschoolers!). Few questions for you fish-pros: 1. Will these little fry be doomed if I leave them in the big tank with the hungry adults? 2. How in the world do I clean the gravel in the tank with these little guys? Will the Platy fry be big enough to be safely removed from the tank in a few weeks for tank cleaning? 3. Does the presence of these little guys prohibit me from adding more fish to the tank? (We were just getting our aquarium started...) Thanks for your advice!!! Perhaps I should just pretend that I never saw the little guys and let nature do its thing, but I thought I'd at least ask the pros for options. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Is this a good Aquarium Setup? ...?

Hello, So one day I was walking my dog, and I saw this fish tank outside someones house. I found many things with it such as ... 10 gallon tank, the cover (with a light), a bag of gravel, a water heater (100w), a whisper filter, some fish food, and some decorations. It seems like im lucky I guess :P. But anyway, Im planning on getting fish for my little 10 gallon aquarium. I am planning on getting 6 neon tetras, and 2 cory cat fish, is this a good set up?. Voting Question: My aquarium is filthy even though I have a filter?

I put some new plants in my aquarium today and moved stuff around and I couldnt believe the amount of stuff that I disturbed from the gravel. The whole tank was filled with fishes business. I have 2 sucking loaches in my tank which is 2 1/2 feet long. The filter is working and it is cleaned out every 2 weeks with the water I take out when doing a water change. Does anybody recommend any other way of cleaning out all the poop from under the gravel? I have heard you can get gravel vacuums but are they any good and won't they eat the stones? more

Resolved Question: Aquarium gravel help.?

Hey guys I have been planning to add gravel to my tank. I received some that was used and I accidently left it soaking in tap water while I was cleaning it. I left it there for about a week or so. Because I am currently used bottled water for my aquarium, I dont have de-chlorinizer. I am worried that the chlorine has been absorbed into the gravel, so I left it out in the sun, with Aluminium foiled to try to get rid of the Chlorine. Is this an effective way to do so? How long until I can add the gravel back to the tank without harming my fish because of chlorine poisoning? *side notes* I am trying to cycle my tank. (this is day 5) I have one betta in order to speed up the cycle (because of their hardiness) The gravel is colored. Thank you for your time :) more

Resolved Question: My brother's goldfish passed something odd?

A few months ago our town had a carnival, and my brother won a goldfish on the ring toss. We refused to buy him a tiny plastic carnival tank or a bag of cruddy carnival fish food, however, and he's been living in a 3-gallon fish bowl with a bit of gravel on the bottom and an "Oriental Castle" from PetSmart. Every Tuesday we change his water and add a bit of aquarium salt and some water neutralizer. It's never murky by then, but any longer and it will be. Yesterday my brother saw something odd coming out of his rear. He thought it was a tumor but my dad passed it off as some poop. I agreed. It didn't look serious. When we got home from school supplies shopping, the "poop" was gone. Swimming close to the surface of the bowl, though, was something that looked like a bug. It wasn't a baby goldfish because it looked nothing like a fish. It looks like this: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/Arthropoda/CrustaceanPIX/branchiuran%20wwm.jpg Should we be looking forward to flushing the poor fish? more

Resolved Question: Fixing a mistake in freshwater aquarium setup?

I haven't bought fish yet since I'm still setting up. Just yesterday I put in the filter, and now the water is cloudy. I looked it up and realized that I hadn't washed the gravel, but I already have the decorations set up and all the de-chlorinated water in the 20 gal tank. I'm looking for alternatives to undoing all of my progress through draining the tank and removing the gravel. If I use the gravel vacuum will that help? Will the gravel debris be bad for the fish if I leave it? more

Resolved Question: Aquarium Chemical Help Please?

Alright, I'm still pretty novice at the whole fish keeping game. Right now I have a 55 gallon tank that has 6 Zebra Danios, 5 Neon Tetras, 2 Glo Fish, 10 Platys, and 1 Pleko. My GH and KH are to high, by a lot and my pH is slightly high. I know that I can get a Tap Water filter or a pillow softener, what do you guys suggest and what brands? Would I get an extra large pillow softener if I got that? Do you suggest API Proper pH 7.0? Or just like pH down? Have you used Waste Control? Or is it a waste of money? I do weekly partial water changes and vacuum the gravel so the ammonia stays perfect most of the time. I'm just a tad confused on what I should use, there's so many different brands of chemicals and stuff it's hard to know which one to use and without a fish specialty store around I can't just go ask someone. Thanks for looking or answering if you do! more

Resolved Question: Goldfish tank water brown, gold fish sick?

I'm a cat lover and never had interest in fish keeping. My cat brought home a live but injured goldfish just over two years ago. I rescued it, but it can't go back to a pond because of its injuries. (It lost a lot of gut through a hole in its belly, and now it excretes through the hole and doesn't get bigger because it's underfed, but I hate to kill it because otherwise it seems quite happy.) I bought a second fish to keep it company and a 20 litre tank, on the advice of the local aquarium shop. I have gravel, no plants, a pump filter containing charcoal, and I replace the charcoal every month, the filter when it starts to break up. I rinse the filter in pond water every week to keep it clean, and I replace about 5 litres of the water. Last summer someone else's cat caught a third gold fish and I was black mailed into taking it - threat of it being eaten by the finder's Koi Carp otherwise. Now I read that my tank is criminally too small for the poor fishes, but no one will re-home them for fear of infections. Not only is the water filthy and brown despite repeated treatment with something from the fish store, but the fish are now lethargic, not feeding and two out of the three have big sores on their rear flanks in the same place. The biggest of the three doesn't have any sores....... I think he is attacking the two smaller fish. I put medication in the tank, but to use the water cleaner and the medication the charcoal has to come out. Is it okay to do a daily 20% water change? I don't mind doing that since the fish go lively again when there's fresh water, even though it stays brown. I use a water conditioner from the fish store, and never put in untreated tap water. I let it stand overnight to be the same temperature too. I would like to rehome the two larger fish and keep the disabled one, maybe with a companion of a species that won't grow big. I can't euthanise her after two years, just because she's making extra work for me, but clearly three fish, two of which have doubled their size in a year, to over three inches long, is far too much for a 20 litre tank. more

Resolved Question: Cichlid tank improvement?

Well, I recently bought 2 African Mbuna Cichlids.... They are around 1". I'm gonna buy more, so no worries in that zone! But, I want to fix the aquarium... And that would require a 100% water change, or 50%-50% in 2 days. The reason is because I currently have gravel, and I want to change it to sand. But my mother says: "In a tank sand is never used", which I know is bogus. So is it a good idea? Is there any other way I can change it? Any additional detail is appreciated! The tank has been running for about 10 years. And has been 100% cleaned about 5-6 times(that I can remember)... 2 of these time there were some zebra minnows... They are still alive in there... I will get rid of them, right now, the cichlids are to small to try to eat them.Oh, and IF I did get the sand in, how would I clean the substrate??????? Voting Question: How do I get rid of a Black Worm infestation in my Aquarium?

I have 4 gouramis, 15 CRS/RCS and a guppy in my 44L tank right now. I decided to feed them some black worms so I bought them and the little cone thing which floats on the water for the fish to pick at. I put the worms in, and they just went straight through the holes, and went right to the bottom. My gravel is about 3 cm deep and they seemed to burrow after an hour of being introduced. I always hear about them doing bad things to the water, holding bacteria and all, but I'm worried that the black worms hiding in the gravel might breed, and become an infestation. Will the worms breed like crazy, and cause a problem or will they just die off (that could still be posed as a problem)...? And if they do survive in an aquarium, what can I do to safely kill the worms without harming my fish or the shrimp?they've burrowed into the gravel where the fish can't get them. The gouramis did eat some of them, but they all disappeared into the gravel really fast. more

Resolved Question: My fish tank's water filter is bubbling over? Help!?

I have a male betta fish that lives in a 1g tank with an under gravel water filter. Ive had this set up for about four days, and after about two days of having the filter on and running with no problem, I noticed that there are bubbles coming out of the filter that, after having the filter run for long enough, bubble out through the little 'feeding hole' at the top. Then when I turn off the filter, the bubbles eventually go away. What's wrong with my water filter, and what can I do to stop the bubbling? (And please don't bother with the "You should atleast have a 5g aquarium for a betta". My little guy is perfectly content with his 1g aquarium, especially considering he was in a tiny plastic cup the first few weeks or so of his life.) Thank you!I put in a "bowl buddies" water conditioner everytime i change the water (about once a week) more

Resolved Question: Please help ASAP, how do I treat my betta? I think he is getting sick...?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/47611666@N08/4901562439/ This is the only good picture I could take. The white thing is not sticking out, but looks slightly as if his scale was scraped off and left that. But I don't think that's why. He is also getting a slight white outline on his left gills, and a small white dot above his eye. Now I think he is getting some white on his mouth. I tried looking on the web but found nothing that looks or sounds like what he has. He still eats, swims around, although yesterday and today I noticed his just slowly swimming around, laying on the gravel sometimes. I don't know if this is abnormal or if he just doesn't have anything else to do. He lives in a ten gallon tank with silk plants, and I use Aquarium salt (was using because he had teared his tail, the reason why I got the silk plants too). What can I do? i don't have money right now for a tank with a filter (I'm 14) and my mom will think I'm overreacting. Can you tell me what it might be and what I could do? I have a gallon bowl, but no filter for that. any help would be appreciated. Please help Charlie! He doesn't actually have sugar like spots, like itch. I looks more like lines/bumps. more

Resolved Question: Good fish to put into a small aquarium?

I am back in school after a year of interning, and I bought a little 2.5 gallon tank today with the intent of getting a fish or two. The tank has a nice, simple filtration system, a good light and I fully intend on putting a couple of plants in there as well. Right now it's cycling to clean the environment with the help of a water cleaning supplement and the filtration system. I'll pick up a couple small plants and a pH kit tomorrow to see how it's coming along. I've also got gravel and a small faux wood branch in it to give it a nice look. So by this weekend, hopefully the tank will be ready for fish. Anyone have suggestions? a lone betta would of course do well in that kind of environment, but I'm also considering maybe a few brightly colored tetras or some such. I also want to put some kind of cleaner animal in the tank, either one of those small catfish, or possibly starting a snail colony. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! more

Resolved Question: Do I need anything else?

OK! I bought this exact fish tank. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Aquarium-Starter-Kit-5-Gallons-Fish-Aquatic-Pets/12177653 Now there is a small plant in there, and gravel. I have two Glofish and a snail. I am soon getting rid of the snail. I NOW know that Glofish need a bigger tank. So I want to buy this stuff http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3804453&clickid=wish_list http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753227&clickid=wish_list http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752295&clickid=wish_list (the filter for the 10 gallon) http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3433706&clickid=wish_list I want to transfer my Glofish into the 10 gallon, and use the 5 gallon for Triops. Do I need to get anything for them? Can they live comfortably in a 5 gallon? Thanks. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3579693&clickid=wish_list plus the 50 watt heater for the new ten gallon more

Resolved Question: is this tank alright (see details please)?

Thanks for reading. I am getting a 20 gallon aquarium with medium sized, smooth gravel, a large ornament that takes up a large portion of the tank, with 3 or 4 holes and lots oh hiding cover. there is much room to swim in front ot the ornament and there will be a few fake plants. I am using a Top FIn 20 filter. There will be 5 red wag platy, 3 Peppered Cories, and two mystery snails- 1 black 1 gold. Any suggestions?Alright so I'll bring down the platy to 4, but the ornament doesnt take up too much space. I've never had any luck with live plants, but I could experiment in my old ten gallon and do some reseach. Thanks guys.I have a heater. and a hood with a light.they are all the same gender. more
