A few months ago I bought a 10 gal aquarium, i have a heater, filter, top with lights, 3 live plants, a little cave for shelter, a thermometer, and an aerator. Soon after i bought my first fish (Gold Platys and a algae eater) the algae eater died. i removed him and about a week later i bought a red platy 2 black skirt tetras and a long black skirt tetra. i waited another week and then got a cory catfish. all of the sudden my tetras got ick and infected the whole tank. as i was dealing with ick my tetras got bad fin rot. i took them back to the store on the 14 day guarantee. all my fish ended up dying except 1 gold platy. now i bought 2 neon tetras and later 3 guppies. about a week after i bought my new fish my last platy died in a hospital tank of mouth rot. the guppies and tetras are getting along fine there is no bullying. do i have anything to be worried about? now i use aquarium salt and i do very frequent water changes. i never wait over a week. will my tank be fine? please help i just want to be able to have fish and keep them as a hobby.i do condition the water... and would not having 6 tetras in my tank be bad because i dont know if my tank will support all of them.. more

Ok,so today i never really go real close to the glass of my tank and i saw thousands of white little bugs so i got a Q tip and i scraped the INSIDE of my glass. I got my son's microscope and i put it on that piece of plastic i moved around then i found 1. It was black not white had legs almost looked like a crab/beetle it had legs. I tried taking a picture but the microscope has a glare. OTHER DETAILS OF THE NASTY BUGS! It lives on side of the sank on bottom of tank can swim and mostly on sides and on top or under the water. It had many legs!! On both sides it the front it looked like it had antennas The back of it was pitch black. WHAT IS IT! Tank info Its my betta breeding tank i want them out asap i have 8 day old betta fry in there. Its a 10 gallon. Unfortunately my water is too low to start filtration. The tank is heated. The tank does have gravel. I added a peacock fern plant in the aquarium about 3-4 weeks ago. Reason i asked because i want these bugs gone and not harming my small fry. IF ANYONE CAN TELL ME WHAT THEY ARE I WILL THANK YOU SO MUCH! I need to know so i can buy the medicine if i cant do anything to kill them when the fry are big enough i will kill the tank with nitrate plus. more

The tank was just moved from home to my dorm on Aug 30th, so it is possible that something different is in the water here. I did travel with about 8gal of water or so from home, all the bacteria and wheel were preserved in water through trip, fish were transfered to hot-water-cleaned rubbermade container for transport and reintroduced to tank after it was back up and water running for about 5ish hours by being floated in baggies for about 20min. I did have an ick-scare (treated 29days with Coppersafe and sponge filter by marineland). Ick scare means I treat preventatively now for three days with Jungle's Ick Guard II 1xmonth (without carbon filter of course) bc I believe the parasites are in my water. No signs of fish distress, etc; everyone is perfectly normal. One fished died in hospital tank due to long-lasting, unknown, internal infection/parasite/bacteria(??)... there was nothing more I could do. ***My fishtank, freshwater, tropical community:*** -15gal tall Eclipse System 150gal/hr filtration -Access to sunlight, but not in direct sun at all (light is just bouncing off white walls lol). Hood's lamp is used to light and heat tank during the day. -Heated to a constant +/- 78-80*F by seperate heater always (lamp does so on its own). -7 Zebra Danios (5F 2M I believe) -2 Mystery Snails (1 F 1unknown) -2 Dwarf Gouramis (both F) -I think that we might have neamatoads (or whatever those little white worms are that come out at night) bc my mom's tank (same set up and water supply) have them. -Fish are fed any variety of Tetra's Bettamin, Tetra Min Tropical Chrips/Granuals/FD Shrimp and Tetra FD Bloodworms & Tetra Algea Waffers. -No live plants, etc. but tons and tons of fake plants and decorations including a new plant that cover 1/3 the tank's surface. -Tank floor is a mixture of sand, "pond rock"/larger stones, and gravel all from LFS and very very old sea shells that have been in our tanks for years. -API Aquarium Salt is replaced 1xmonth in a small pet-co cup Any comments or advice will be appreciated. ...I'm trying not to worry. Open Question: Brackish water chemistry problems!?

So i have a brackish water tank that is newly set up (the salinity is about 1.004) and i have a few questions..... 1. I put eco-grow soil into my tank for the substrate, is this okay for a brackish aquarium because i wasnt sure if it was for fresh water only tanks, and will it permently raise/lower the pH? 2. I have genrally freshwater plants in the tank and was wondering how much salt they can take. 3. I have been using simple aqurium salt, should i be using marine salt instead? because i heard that if you use marine salt it will put the pH in a more basic range (8.0-8.2) naturally that is more suited for brackish tanks. Open Question: Aquarium (Tropical Fish and Shrimp Colony)?

Greetings to all aquarium enthusiast! This is my first time to set up a fresh water aquarium and have a bunch load of questions in stock to ask all aquarium gurus out there. Initially I was thinking of setting up a tank purely for tetras and guppies but also took interest in cherry shrimps as well. The tank is a 80L which is sufficient enough to raise the fish but is it also possible to have a small colony of 15 cherry's? What impact would the cherry's have on the tank eco system if they formed a colony? I've done some separate research about this and some people seem to have small number of shrimps (max 5) but no place offered a clear answer in regards to colonies. Also I want to plant a partial carpet (partial to leave some space for bottom dwellers) but what's the best recommended plants for this? Some videos on you tube show very soft looking lawns with some commenting it's java moss but when I looked at the individual java moss plants they looked very rough. I've also seen some people suggesting it's Hemianthus callitrichoides though I never had a chance to come by to see the real. I still have more questions to ask but I'll stop my rant from here so I don't kill everyone from boredom. okay, so I took out ALL of the fake plants and put in 6 real plants in my 25g aquarium, and 2 pieces of driftwood and a terracotta pot, and ever since I did this my betta has been making massive bubble nests! I think, or could this be my plants making bubbles? If its my betta does this indicate my water parameters are better or something? Also today, when I opened the lid of my tank, I noticed that a kind of mist suddenly rose from the tank like some steam quickly, my tank is only 27 Degrees Celcius, so I was wondering if this was okay? I have a 10 gal tank, with heater, aerator, aquarium salt, thermometer, and a few live plants. I recently had my water tested at petsmart and they said everything looked good, no problems. I have 3 guppies a yellow, blue, and red. the red guppy was doing fine and swimming around but now he stays up close to the heater and doesn't want to move around much... or eat as much. Is there something wrong? My water is kept at around 76-78 degrees Farenheit. more

Open Question: Made a boo-boo, will my Cherry Shrimp survive?

The husband and I recently added some Amano Shrimp to our community tank. We thought that they were so cute that we went back to our local fish shop for more. I spotted the Cherry Shrimp in another tank and I said "Hey, let's take some of these guys to add some variation." We asked the employee if they got along with Amano Shrimp and he assured us that it was fine. So we got home and I looked up Cherry Shrimp on the internet, only to find out that they grow quite a bit smaller than the Amanos. We thought we would try them out anyway. After we released them, a few of our Congo Tetras went after them. Our tank is heavily planted (including floating plants), so the Cherry Shrimp were able to scuttle away to safety and hide. It has been a few days now and the Cherry Shrimp are surviving, although they have to scuttle plant to plant or they will be nipped by those darn Congo Tetras! It seems so strange, but all the other fish do not pay attention to them at all. I read some more on the internet and I found a page that says as long as Cherry Shrimp have adequate planting to hide in, that they can survive even with large aggressive fish. I think it could be possible because I have been watching them and they are not stupid little shrimp. They know how to maneuver themselves around the aquarium undetected. Occasionally, a Congo will spot them and go in for a nip but then they will zoom off into the plants faster than lightning. Has anyone else had this experience? Did your Cherry Shrimp survive? Open Question: Aqueon Hoods for aquarium?

I have a 20 gallon tank with a 30" aqueon deluxe full hood. I want a planted tank so the T8 17w tube 8000K it comes with is not enough. I have absolutely no knowledge on lighting, I only know how to snap the tube into the aquarium reflector ( the white inside?) What tube should I get so I can grow plants? I dont know what this brand's maximum wattage is, I dont understand what t8, t5 whatever tubes mean, all I know is that the white inner part can only fit a 24" tube. more

Open Question: Should I get the appropriate things for an Open Bottom Aquarium?

OK here goes .. I feel really bored with a normal freshwater Aquarium setup as I've been keeping fishes for about 10+ years now(stop and now continuing) (but not bored with the types of fishes in them) so I was thinking of setting up and Open bottom Aquarium!! a bit like this video :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5InNVJ_Yt… only smaller about 20gallon (high) for the top aquarium .. but not sure how much the bottom 1 would hold yet as I haven't run to the glass cutting store yet to get the right measurements that I want. the setup will be a bit cheaper since I have the top aquarium already (and only need to buy the bottom Aquarium!!) Resolved Question: Goldfish and aquarium plants??? help needed?!?

I have one goldfish in a 27 gallon tank. In the past I've had live plants but they were all eaten before they could grow. I'm thinking about getting a cheap 5 gallon tank or even just a bucket with a light to use as a nursery for the plants so that I can alternate them between the two tanks and give them a chance to grow. Btw, I'm going to use canadian pondweed (also called elodea or anacharis) Also, my goldfish is a fancy goldfish and I would like to get a common goldfish. I don't think competition would be much of a problem because he takes food from our hands. Are there any other problems associated? What do you think, and any suggestions? more

I have a 37 gallon freshwater aquarium...mostly african cichlids and a couple other compatibles. I have a couple live plants and a big piece of live driftwood so I am assuming they are the culprit for the low ph level. My ph level is at about 6.2 which is obviously too low for african cichlids. The 6.2 is stable and hasn't budged since I've own the tank in the last couple months. The fish appear stress free...I am just worrying if this may affect them long term. I have tried ph increasers...they're a joke. Some have also recommended crushed coral, limestone, etc. although different sources on the internet have said that didn't work for them either. I did read about one product made specifically for cichlids which is supposed to raise the ph to about 8.5 which maybe me to high for some of the non-cichlids who are 6.5-7.5 so what should I do? Ideally, I would like to get the ph to about 7.5ish...that would be a perfect ph for the combo of fish I have. Or...should I just leave the PH as is? I also read that as long as the ph is stable that it doesn't make a huge difference. more

I feel bad for my brother, because he has one aquarium and he loves mollies, especially the balloons, but he can never succecfully keep them, so I now want to make an aquarium perfect for mollies, so I need to know what water conditions are prefered(brackish or freshwater), decorations(plants, open, rocks), and tank mates(tetras, gobies)?just going to say, i am experianced in fish keeping, although I have only kept 1 platy before, and very few tetras. I normally keep cichlids, gouramis, and fresh water sharks(I know they are not real sharks.)my brother just really likes them, and i feel bad that he can't keep them allive.also, not all gobies get big, bumble bee gobies stay at a good 2 inches long.I will most likely get a brackish setup with 1 flounder, some mollies, some glass tetras, and some bumblebee gobies. And one I think is a pregnant female. :D Anyone know what I should do to help her? She appears to be more bold than the other two. And bigger! The tank is filled to 5 gallons, it has a homemade filter right now with an air pump and two hideouts, AND a pretty orange plant with sand colored gravel. It looks like the sea, but for freshwater fish. The temperature will stay as room temperature - 68 at night and 73 during the day. I have 3 shrimp in there, 2 male and 1 female. Their is a cute little one in there that seems to stay to itself and the other two follow eachother around. Should I get 1 more so the little one isn't alone? I waited close to 1 hour with their bag floating in the water before opening it and letting them out. Okay, maybe it was 40 minutes...around that. But the tank has been sitting for a day before I put them in and I just added a few flakes in their (tropical flakes) for them to eat. They are just hanging out right now, exploring. Anything else I need to do? Their aquarium is set in from of a window with a cover, so they get plenty of light without too much. I still am gonna try to get fish netting as a lid for the aquarium, and a fluorescent light (Probably tomorrow!). Are they more active at night than the day? What is the healthiest food I can give them?OH, I forgot. Are ghost shrimp afraid or shy of noise? Because the air pump makes noises in the aquarium...if it ends up against something it is a bit noisy. I'd say low to medium sound.Thanks! :) more

My water's been sitting for about an hour now with conditioner, and i have the gravel and plant in the aquarium and everything so is it safe to add the water yet or should i wait another hour or so to add it to the aquarium ? Also, the pet smart lady told me to add the fish to the tank and not to bother with letting the jar float in the tank for a while (the jar wont fit actually.. its a very narrow tank (4 inches or so..) so can i just add the fish and its current water to the new tank. It's a 3 liter tank by the way. Also, do i need to feed the fish blood worms because i didnt buy any of those yet but ill go buy some if i need too .. any help is apprecitated thanks :)this is my first fish by the way so im a bit worried im going to do something wrong and kill her.should i put the fish and the water into a ziploc bag to let it float in the tank for a while ? to get used to the temperature and stuff ? more

Any good, easy to care for plants that anyone could recommend for my Betta tank? I've got one of those "lily bulb" plants from Wal-Mart that is doing very well in this tank, but I'd really like to replace all of the silk plants with real plants. Preferably something that needs very little light, does well in ~80 degree water and doesn't need substrate. Thanks for any help. :) more

I set up a 20 gallon long tank with an aqua-clear 70 filter. I use anubias nana plants throughout the whole tank. I only use ro / di water in all my aquariums. The tank has been cycled and ready to go. The ph-7 water very soft from the ro filtration. Ammonia nitrites and nitrate all at zero. I never over stock my tanks, just wondering whats a good number of them to have in a 20 gallon long tank. more

Voting Question: Im thinking of putting some live plants in my tank? What do you reccommend and what do I do with them etc?

Im a complete noob, and am thinking of getting some plants for my 30g tropical aquarium and was wondering what I should get? I want my tank to look proffesional, so should I get some plants that dont completely cover the back wall of the tank? and just kind of line the middle? Voting Question: how can i get the nitrite levels down in my live planted tank?

i just set up my first planted tank. a week later i added some neon tetras. soon they were all dead. after a bit of a hunt (i am in japan) i found a water quality test kit. come to find out my nitrite levels are super high and it killed all of my fish. all i could turn up online is to add some salt to the water, but the same sites also say never to add salt to a live planted aquarium. help me please, i really would like to get my tank going. more

Voting Question: Help with African Dwarf Frogs and treating the tank for fungus?

We purchased a new Molly for our fish tank a few days ago. She had acted a little strange, but seemed overall ok. We foud her this morning with a white "fuzz" on her. We took her out of the tank, but she died before we got to the pet store. The store told us to treat the tank with Fungus Guard dissolving fizz tablets. I dropped one in my 10 gallon tank and it turned my water a green color... Anyway...my African Dwarf Frogs immediately began acting very frantic. They were trying to climb out, staying at the surface non-stop and behaving in a way I have NEVER seen. I have watched them since 10 pm last night (it is now 3 am) and they were acting more and more hysterical so I netted them out of the water, put them into a 1 gallon storage container with 75% fresh water, a small plant and that is it until morning. Is Fungus Guard harmful to the frogs? I asked the girl working at PetSmart, and she said no, but I don't exactly take her word as gospel! ;) As soon as I netted the frogs out (they didn't argue with being removed from the water) and got them into their new water, they took a breath at the top and settled onto the bottom where they usually stay. Help - what do I do? I don't want to risk the rest of my tank and NOT treat for whatever fungus the fish had, but I don't want to kill my frogs with the treatment either. By the way - we keep freshwater aquarium salt in our tank all the time at a rate of 1 tbsp per 10 gallons. Thank you... more

Resolved Question: HELP!! GUPPIES POSSIBLY DYING!?!?!?

Today i put my guppies into their new 10 gallon tank. Before they were in a 1 gallon bowl and 2 gallon tank- which was to small so i upgraded. Yesterday i set it up and let it run for 24 hours then put the fish in today. They don't seem to be doing well at all they seem horrible and i don't know why. i have an undergravel filter fit for like a 2-3 gallon tank in there and another filter (not undergravel) which i don't know the "type" of (im not much of an expert) that is fit for 5-6 gallons. It seems to be making a little bit of a current in there which they don't like very much, but i need the filter in there. I also have an airstone in there so the undergravel plus airstone should be making plenty of airation for them... They don't seem well now, before they were very happy. i aclimatized them right... i floated them in the new tank and dumped in a little water from the tank then floated them some more... etc.There are plenty of plants and decorations in there for them to hide in and gravel. The water is also dechlorinized so i don't know what the issue could possibly be. There aren't many fish in there. Three normal sized guppys that you would buy at the pet store and 6 very small "feeder" guppies that i would say probably like 3 would make the same amount of waste that one normal sized guppy would make. So I guess you could say that there are "about 5" guppies in there if that helps. All that they do is sit at the surface in one big Clump of guppies and don't move... they also won't eat any food at all for some reason. I don't know what happened to all to them and i'm worried that they might die here soon. What is going on? does anyone know? And oh ya i have a heater now and aquarium slat in there- before there tank/bowl wasn't heated if that has anything to do with it but acclimatizing them should've been fine with that. Anyways please help i don't know whats wrong.! more

Resolved Question: Why is brown algae growing in my fish aquarium?

Brown algae is growing all over the sides of the tank and over the plants and little decorations. I just scrubbed everything in the tank on Sunday to clean it off and the algae is back again. I have a glass, 29 gal. aquarium and use the florescent light that it came with. The water is about 78-80 degrees and I have two filters in the tank cycling about 330 gph. I change about 20% of the water weekly and last week I changed 50% of the water. The aquarium is about two months old but I didn't have this problem for the first month and a half but now I can't get rid of it. What should I do to stop the growth of the algae and keep it from coming back? Is their anything I can put in the water to kill the algae so I don't have to scrub everything again? The fish seem perfectly normal but I would like to fix the problem before it affects their health. Thanks! more

Can I keep a freshwater jellyfish in a rectangular aquarium, provided that I create currents that will keep it from getting stuck in the corners? Also, how much filtration and aeration does a jellyfish need? What kind of plants can I put in with it? UVA bulbs or UVB bulbs for lighting? How much do they eat? Can I have feeding times, or does food need to be constantly available? Do they need to be kept in groups, or are they fine on their own? As for the legality of keeping a freshwater jellyfish as a pet, I've already asked, and it's fine. Info: 72 gallon freshwater aquarium, 3 months old, waited a month before adding fish (1 lg. severum & fostered a few platys & mollies for family for short time), levels always good, weekly water changes of 20%, partial gravel vacuum, and I do not over feed. UNTIL now... added 4 cichlids >4" along with our 8" severum and I can not bring my levels down, no matter what. Pet store told me that I shouldn't change the water as often, change one filter cartridge at the time days apart (i changed both ev. 2 wks.-month) and to use a nitrate remover, which I have and it's done nothing at all. I used a 5-N-1 test strip test and the levels was off the chart. The pH is accurate. I can't add plants, the fish will destroy them. I've tried a privately owned pet shop & a chain to get help and no one can give me an answer to help me get it straight. Please help! more

I just got 2 baby snails from a pet shop, they gave them to me for free because "they just come on the plants (living plants) and we don't even want them". so I'm wondering if they may have been carrying something and the pet shop people didn't tell me, after i got them my Betta got sick, at first i thought it was just the cold, but then he got like, fungus on him earlier today, i got some stuff to help off my gf, but it was to late, i just cam home and he was dead. more

Resolved Question: Why did my crown tail betta die?

I have had many bettas before and I would say I have a pretty good back ground with them. Its just I went up to find one of my bettas dead and I can not think of a reason of why he died. I got him In January from petco and he was fine. I was keeping him in a divided 10 gallon with one of my male on the other side. They rarely noticed each other. After a 50 percent water change i replaced the decor and the divider. i always just put one male in for like an hour to see if he can get through. i put my other male in and over night my crown tail slipped through to the other side and killed him. I removed the body and did 95% percent water changes on both my 5 gallon and 10 gallon. I moved my other crown tail out of the 5 and in to the 10 and stuck Ice in the 5 gallon. Both were heated at the time but not filtered but at that moment I put filters in. I accidentally knocked the cup my one that died was in and it fell off the desk and on the floor. He was on the floor max 5 seconds. So maybe it could have been from stress? I treat my water with aqua safe and a put a little bit of aquarium salt in as well. I tested the water and everything was normal. I put him in and he started acting very lethargic and rested on his plants all the time. He was not sick and had no ripped fins what so ever. I kept an eye on the temp all week and it stays with in 78-82 degrees so I’m not really sure what went wrong. I did what i always did. My other one is acting normal and is just fine and I did a 95% water change on it so it cant be from water changes. more

Resolved Question: PH won't increase above 6.2ish in my freshwater community aquarium?

I have a 37 gallon freshwater community aquarium (w/ live plants) and I just can't seem to increase the PH level above around 6.2. I've used several different test kits all with the same reading. I've used several types of 7.0 ph balancers. I've also bought PH increaser liquids...they never change the reading. I have african cichlids among a couple other types of fish, so ideally I would like the tank to be around 7.0-7.5. They fish seem happy and with no signs of stress but i would still like to bump it up a bit. There doesn't seem to be any obvious probelms...amonia readings are low and water is crystal clear. Any suggestions?Just wanted to add...never had a problem stablizing the ph to 7.0 in my old 20 gallon community tank, although that was with artifical plants. This is my first live plant tank so maybe that has something to do with it??? more

I set up a 75 gallon aquarium 3 months ago. I have two eheim 2217 filters and i use two aquaclear 70s as an overflo box, i dont plug them in. I put the eheim return hoses in them to slow the flow down and i put carbon in them. I only use ro water with two di filters, then add ro right back to the water.
