Resolved Question: how do I remove silicone sealant from my acrylic aquarium?
I made my own aquarium by melting acrylic pannels together with methylene chloride. Unfortunately, it leaked. I put on some aquarium silicone sealant, and it still leaked in one place. So now I'm trying to remove the silicone sealant so that I can try again- but I'm concerned that if I buy a "silicone remover" compound (in a tube or something) that it will compromise the joints. I don't want this thing to fall apart when I try to scrape off the silicone. Any ideas on how to do it short of manually scraping it (it's a long, arduous process, well underway)?
If you tell me to re-apply the silicone without cleaning off the old, you won't get the best answer. I need to know how to remove silicone sealant from acrylic (specifically polymethylmethacrylate) without damaging the acrylic.
Thanks!
moreResolved Question: Setting up a Cichlid Aquarium- Need Help!?
About two weeks ago, I bought a 40-gallon aquarium that came with a working hang-on-the-back filter, heater, ornaments and gravel. The gravel is pretty coarse: about 1/2"-diameter polished rocks.
I set up a decent fish tank for a while, with many fake plants and cute ornaments, and let it sit for a week. Then I bought six guppies: two males, four females. The day after that, two females died.
I was worried about my future guppy tank, but after doing some intensive research, I decided that I should have made a Cichlid tank to take advantage of how much my aquarium can hold.
I read that guppies were good for starting the cycle for a Cichlid tank, though, so I was happy I had still made that decision, even if it was for another reason.
I changed the decorations in my tank with the guppies still in it, so now I have a good Cichlid tank layout, with many rocks, that are stacked or formed into little caves or crevices. I have one fake plant behind the rocks in each corner.
However, I really want to make this Cichlid tank as perfect as possible, so I have a decent amount of issues:
-My current tank is 40-gallon, the temperature is 79-80 degrees, and the pH is 7.6
1. I am aware that the pH needs to be raised to 8.0-8.2, but I don't know the best way to do that safely without harming my guppies or anything. Also, the guppies can't really handle a pH that high, so when would be a good time to do it?
2. The guppies have been in for 2 days now. How long should I wait until the tank is fully cycled?
3. I fear that my gravel is much too coarse for Cichlids, who like to dig around alot. I want to buy a new substrate, preferably sand, but I really don't want to take out all the gravel on the bottom and then pour sand into the water to have it float around and cloud the water with fish in it. Would it be possible to put sand on the gravel? I don't have eggcrate on the bottom, but I feel like the coarse gravel supports the rocks well and protects the acrylic from them.
4. To raise my pH naturally, should I buy Aragonite sand, reef sand, etc.? What would be something that I could most likely put on my gravel and would raise the pH to about 8.0-8.2? I also have some dried coral, but I don't know if it will manage to raise the pH enough and then buffer it. If pH-raising sand is the better idea, please post a link or something on the Petco or Petsmart website (so that I can easily go buy it at the store. Also, note that I don't buy my fish at Petco, I go to a LFS).
5. What would I do with my guppies when my Cichlid environment is completely ready? Are they likely to get eaten, or could they co-exist with the first pair I put in? (They almost always hang at the top of the tank)
6. Is my filtration sufficient? I would like to spend as little as possible, but if better or additional filtration is necessary, please let me know.
I'm sorry for the long and horrifyingly specific questions, but I've had a lot of problems with fish tanks, and this is my first one with bigger fish, so I'm not ready to cut any corners anymore. Any help with any of these questions is truly and deeply appreciated- Thank you in advance! If more filtration is necessary, I probably would need something inside the tank, since 2 hang-on-the-back filters seems excessive.Forgot to specify- I'm going to get African Cichlids: most likely lake Malawi ones.Kenyi fish are what I'm aiming for as a start, followed by anything that can eventually accompany it and give color diversity in the tank. I haven't managed to find a compatibility chart, list or anything that can tell me compatible species of lake Malawi fish that will live in harmony. My understanding is that most Mbuna fish are able to live together, if the ratio of females to males is at least 4 to 1, and if the males are of different species and color than each other.
If I'm wrong, then I'll ask a question about Mbune compatibility.Mbuna* my mistake

http://www.bestpetsuppliesguide.com/wp-content/uploads/marineland-eclipse-acrylic-aquarium-system-6-gallons.jpg
This tank, I am the process of cycling my tank. I ordered some live Tahitian moon sand to the tank but I forgot to turn off the filter while adding it so it's completely my fault I think because the filter stopped working after this. I've tried to clean out the filter as best that I can, there doesn't appear to be any clogged sand or anything. It sounds like it's working but then it wont suck. a little sand might have gotten inside but I don't know how much.
What should I do to get it to work again? I poured water into the filter too and it still wouldn't work. Is there any hope for it or do I need to get a replacement?

Hi-
I am planning on ordering a marineland eclipse acrylic aquarium sometime soon. I am debating between the 6 gallon and 12 gallon models (price is not an issue).
I am putting the tank on a 11.5" wide bookshelf, and want to know which would be the best fit.
The 6 gallon is 7.5" wide (which would easily fit), but the 12 gallon is exactly 11.5" wide also.
i definatly do not want this to fall off, but i think it might not be smart to have the tank be as wide as the shelf it will rest on.
What are your opinions? 6 gal 7.5" or 12 gal 11.5"?
Thanks-i also know that 12 gallons would open the door for many different types of fish to keep, but i don't want it to be unsafe.

Okay, so I have these two little red-bellied pacu, and they're about 3 inches each... (not even big enough to eat little feeder fish). I currently have them in one of those XL acrylic pet holders from Petco with a small cheap filter that attaches to your air pump.
They are pretty content in this approximately 5-6 gallon holder for now, but I was wondering what type of tank I should buy for these little guys?
Now, I have full knowledge that red-bellied pacu get to be approximately 2-3 feet when they're fully grown and live for over 15 years. Please don't recommend me getting something ridiculous like a 5,000 gallon aquarium for them and don't tell me to return them to the store (ect...).
I was wondering what I could do to best suit these beautiful fishes needs within the limit of keeping them in my house.
Also, what other fish work well with these feisty fish?
Thanks for your help! :)

I just bought a used 75G acrylic tank with a built in wet/dry system, but it didn't come with anything but the tank! I know wet/dry provides great filtration. I am doing a planted freshwater tank and I also know I should add a mechanical filter to pull out debris and decaying plant material, polish, etc,... but what do I put in all those mysterious chambers in this wet/dry system? I assume some sort of sponge material should go someplace, then I need what? Bio balls? I heard green plastic toy soldiers work well, but I think that must be just a charming aquaria myth. The man I bought the tank from said he just used plastic bath scrubbies from the dollar store. I am no stranger to aquaria. I have had tanks for over 30 years. But this is my first time at bat with wet/dry and it is on a tank with some crazy compartments on the back and it came with no instructions. Once I buy a pump and watch it go I'm sure I will figure it out. But I am wondering what media works best for you? And if you have any leads on instructions for a 75 g with a built in w/d filter, please hit me up. I have looked. I came up with squat. Thank you for your time.

moreResolved Question: What is the most efficient way to heat a large terrarium (for hermit crabs)?
I recently got a very good deal on a watertight 90 gallon aquarium - just $40 since they thought it was 55 gallons - and I need to plan an efficient terrarium for a colony of hermit crabs.
The tank is 2ft tall and in some places the sand may be up to 8 inches deep. My first inclination is that heat lamps will not be a very effective nor very efficient approach to maintaining 72-80 degrees.
I currently have a 29 gallon tank with a red incandescent night light and an under-tank heater which keeps the sand warm. At that depth it doesn't have a huge effect on the air temperature and I don't feel that it's particularly safe, especially with no thermostat regulation.
Another option is to keep the water heated. Will one large fresh water and one salt water pool heated to 78 degrees help to maintain a good air temperature? Also, if the pools were adjacent, would I be best to divide them with glass, acrylic, or something else (ideally for the purpose of only requiring one heater and relying on some heat transfer).
I am primarily concerned with energy usage and effectiveness. The tank has a divided acrylic lid which allows airflow while keeping the humidity up as well.
Thank you, this will help to decide whether I should keep it or reframe it (the frame has been melted in a few places) and sell it for a $60 profit in the hopes of finding a smaller alternative. Also, as a clarification, the hermit crabs will be kept either in the living room or in an extra bedroom in my apartment which will be evenly heated to around 70 F, so intense heating should not be necessary. The temperature in the current 29 gallon ranges from 70 to 80.
moreResolved Question: What is the best filter for my Aquarium?
I have a 3 gallon, acrylic tank with one small (male) betta, a ghost shrimp and two small snails. I need a filter that is small, quiet, effective and low flow/current. Any ideas? I have a small Elite filter that I love; it is everything except effective. I don't think it fiters ANYTHING out. Things pass through it whole. But, I love how quiet and simple it is.
Thank you.
moreResolved Question: I need to know if my Betta Fish aquarium setup is acceptable before I add a live male betta. ?
For the last 5 years, I've done a lot of research on aquariums, betta fish, plants, substrate, etc and everything I have read has been contradicted by at least two other sources! Here is what I've pieced together and would love to get some feedback on if this is the best method. I don't simply want to OWN a betta fish; I want to be a really good lifetime home for him.
I have purchased a 3 gallon Tetra acrylic aquarium with a small Whisper low current filter and LED light. I have had my water tested and discovered that it does not need to be treated (only allowed to sit 24 hours) but I've still added the recommended dose of treatment liquid formulated for Betta fish.
The tank has sat 24 hours with the filter off and will be another 24 hours with the filter on.
I am going to add small glass pellets for substrate (I am washing them and running an old panty hose stocking over each to check for snags before adding them). I would like to add a live Anubias plant tied to a chunk of driftwood both as an ornament and as a hiding place for the fish.
I would ultimately introduce two small snails to the aquarium, but I am waiting to make sure that I don't get any accidentally with the live plant. The betta would still live essentially alone; no other fish or anything.
For care, I was considering feeding two prepared pellets of a manufactured betta fish food and then an evening feeding alternating various frozen "live" foods (I've noticed that petco has a great selection).
I adore live crabs, but I don't think one would coinhabit safely with the betta so I have a tiny plastic one on order. :)
For cleaning, I am planning on removing the fish to a bowl with around half of his own water, then cleaning the remaining half of the tank with the glass pellets to make everything super clean before adding him and his own water back in and filling the remaining space with treated water.
Is there anything I am missing or need to improve on? I just want to have a really good plan before actually getting a fish. Thank you!!
moreResolved Question: I have a 45 gallon aquarium meant for marine fish. Where to start on making it a reef tank?
Hi there. I recently came by the biggest steal of my life (so far). :)
PLEASE read ALL of this for best info
For FREE, from my aunt, I have acquired a 45 gallon marine acrylic tank, with teak stand, a FluVal 304 canister filter with all necessities, a fully functional undergravel filter with 2 (very) strong power heads, an Aquaclear 50 gallon hang on filter, and a heater that works perfectly with its tank size. It even comes with a plastic hood (more details in a bit) and multiple air pumps, tubes, and air stones.
This acrylic tanks top, liek most acrylics have the folded in top, with a large slit on the back for filtartion mechanisms, a hole for wiring powerheads/heater, and two large, divided openings in the middle. On these two holes a plastic hood with a single 20w (lame..) freash water flourescent light is mounted.
My question is this. This tank was meant to be used for a marine tank. With the tools already at hand, what other equipment/test kits do I need to get this started and an estimate in price?
(btw i have a gravitometer already)
outside of obvious live rock/sand etc. what are the basic things I should buy/replace. I would like to find out if there is a stronger marine aqua light for this oddly shaped tank. (rounded front corners)
Its dimensions are:
exactly 3ft or 36in in length
15in deep
and 16in tall
ANY information on this would be an amazing help. I will pay attention to details in the answers and will be sure to grand a best answer!
THANK YOU!!
Done two years of marine aquarium research.

They're little fishies, the carnival kind! Well 2 of them are, the other two are fantails.
The filter does have water in it. We got 4 fish last August and 2 of them died about a month ago. We got 2 fantails at that time and all 4 have been fine until now. The power filter has been working fine since we got it, same time as the original 4 fish. It messed up once, and 2 fish got bloody noses... I changed the cartridge and cleaned the whole tank and it was fine. The fish recovered, too.
It was cleaned a few weeks ago and I added a solution for the water (dechlorinator?) and they've been fine until now. I just now noticed the bloody noses, and the stupid filter not filtering.
