Resolved Question: Weekly Aquarium Water Cleaner?
Hi there.
After browsing through my Pet store (no particular reason) I found a 'Weekly Water Cleaner'. ( My Pet store is a 'Pets at Home'). I keep a couple of Neon Tetra's in a 5 Gallon Tank, and was wondering if it would be safe to use- weekly of course. It does say that it is for cold water, marine, and tropical.
Oh, and I was wondering that if I use it, how often will I have to change my water? I currently change it about once a month or so. (I have a BiOrb Aquarium with the BiOrb filtration Systems).
Many Thanks : ]
moreResolved Question: Aquarium Stocking Suggestions / Suitable Tank Mates?
I have just upgraded my 60 litre Biorb to a 140 litre Aquatlantis Evasion 50, with an Eheim 2324 Thermofilter, my pH is 7.2 and I carry out weekly 20% water changes. I currently have 7 green neon tetras, 4 ember tetras and a green cobra guppy. I'd really like some suggestions for suitable tank mates, and some opinions on ideas I already have.
I was thinking of increasing the numbers of the tetras to maybe 10 of each? This is assuming I can find a fish shop with stock.
I also thought of adding either 4 neon dwarf rainbow fish (2 males and 2 females hopefully), or a pair of sparkling gourami’s (or both? I'd reduce numbers of other fish). I was a bit worried about the compatibility of the rainbow fish with the ember tetras so would appreciate if someone could confirm that these would in fact live together with no problems. I’d probably leave the tetra numbers as they are if I go for the rainbow fish.
And then for bottom dwellers I was thinking of a small group of the smaller Cory’s (Panda Cory's or smaller ideally) with some Oto's (maybe Zebra’s?) if/when algae starts to become an issue.
Would these fish be ok together? And should I be increasing/decreasing the numbers of any of these?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I quite like the idea of killifish but I’m not too sure what to go for exactly.
I’d like a peaceful community tank with small fish that are a little bit different – nothing aggressive enough to attack the guppy and nothing big enough to see the embers as lunch!
Thank you in advance :-)LetsTalkFish - I definitely like the idea of increasing the numbers of tetra, I'd just like some sort of feature fish too, hence the rainbow fish and gourami ideas. Rams would be nice - would they be ok with the guppy or might they nip his fins?
I don't think my Oto suggestion came across the way I intended - I meant that I'd only get them when there is algae in the tank, when it's fully established. At the moment they'd just be living on algae wafers, there's nothing else in the tank for them as it's just been set up. I'd be getting them because I think they're lovely little fish, especially the Zebra's. I wouldn't get any fish I didn't really like, no matter how much they might benefit the tank.
Thank you for your answer, it was very helpful :-)
moreResolved Question: What is cycling a tank, and how do you do it?
Hi! I have a 4 gallon biOrb, which I am going to put 1 beta, and 2 African Dwarf frogs in. I know I have to have the water at 70-80 degrees, so I am going to get a heater.
Does cycling a tank mean that I have to have the filter and heater running for a certain amount of time without fish in it?
Also, do I need to add any chemicals like Stress Zyme or something to the water? (I'd be using regular tap, so what do I need to add? Cleaning tips would be helpful!!
Lastly, will the filter that comes in the biOrb be sufficient? I don't see how it wouldn't be, but if you want here is a link to the tank: http://www.petco.com/product/100510/Baby-biOrb-Silver-Aquarium-Kit.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch
Oh, and do you recommend getting a female or male beta? Females are less aggressive, right?
THANKS!!!!
I am very new to this, I have owned many betas before, but that was so long ago that I am very rusty.
P.S One more thing, is the gravel that comes in the tank too scratchy for the ADFs?So basically, ammonia up, then nitrite up and ammonia down, then nitrate up, and nitrite down, then when there is no more ammonia and nitrite, it's safe to add the fish? Very complicated, but okay!
Will someone please answer my other questions? Sorry! hate to sound needy, but I just needed to know.
moreResolved Question: Is there a less expensive, knockoff version of the BiOrb "Life" tank?
My husband and I are wanting to start an aquarium again, and we really like the aesthetic of the BiOrb Life tank (the rectangular one--not the spherical one). However, they're excruciatingly expensive. Does anyone happen to know if there'a another company that makes tanks that have a similar look without costing so much? Thanks!
for reference: http://www.everythingbiorb.com/biorbstore/index.php/biorb-biube-aquariums/biorb-life-16-gallon-portrait-aquarium.htmlJust to clarify, it's the rectangular tank that we're more interested in. I'm aware of the dangers associated with the spherical ones.
moreResolved Question: can corals such as anemones be kept in BiOrb aquariums?
Hi. I am thinking of starting a marine aquarium, and was considering a BiOrb 60 for it. I would have in it 2 small false percular clownfish and a cleaner shrimp. However, this is not my problem. Now, I know Clownfish dont NEED an anemone, but I think it would make a lovely touch to the aquarium, and the Clownfish would probably appriciate it. But, I have heard that anemone's require special, high watt lighting, which none of the BiOrb lighting units can provide.
Anyway, If I can't keep an anemone, are there any other nice looking corals that would be suitable for my aqariums lighting and for my clownfish and shrimp inside?
If not, are there any other fairly small aquariums on the market that you would reccomend? Oh, and ones that aren't too much money, (preferably no more than £100, but I am prepared to go that extra mile for the right aquarium!).
Thanx!
moreResolved Question: i heard biorb aquariums are low matinence?
are they also the size of a 5 gallon standard tank?
moreResolved Question: What are the minnimum tank requirements for 2 false percular clownfish, a royal Gramma and a cleaner shrimp?
Hi. I have been a tropical fish keeper for quite a long time now and feel I am experienced enough to go Marine. I would really like 2 false percular clowns, a royal Gramma, one or two cleaner shrimp and perhaps a small starfish (this wasn't in the question as I didn't have the space to add it, and it is an optional extra). These would all be in the tank along with some live rock and maybe corals.
Now, BiOrb say that a 30L BiOrb is big enough for 2 false percular clownish and about 4 clean up crew such as cleaner shrimps/snails along with perhaps a small hermit crab. However, I only want 1 'cleaner crew' (a small, 5cm shrimp) and so wanted to replace it with a Royal Gramma, and if possible a small starfish.
Is 30L enough for the fish I want? Or, do I need more? If so, what is the ABSOLUTE MINNIMUM size tank for all of the fish I want. I'm not trying to be cheap and get a tiny tank, its just that I can't have a massive tank as I have no room for one with all my otehr tropical aquariums.
Thanx :)
moreResolved Question: Will this new aquarium setup be just fine?
I ordered a 40 gallon (37.4 really) tank. It won't be here for a while. Which gave me time to read/think on what else to get.
First, I will set it up as a tropical fish tank.
I just ordered
Rena 300 air pump (just returned a Tetra Whisper which sound like someone is cutting grass)
EHEIM Classic External Canister filter
Emperor 280 filter (going to return it lol...ppl told me it's loud...they said it's already sent but I can refuse it on arrival they said)
Hydro IV Sponge Filter (why not use this too at the same time for more bio-filtering lol? In case I get fry, I can just leave this one on right?)
biOrb and biUbe Tropical Heater
2x Coral Floral Cave and a fake tree root with another cave below it.
I also have lots of tiny aquarium blue rocks from years ago. Going to use them.
-----------------------------------------------
Now for the fish.
There is no pet store nearby. Only walmart sells some pet fish.
I am looking into get only the small ones. No more than 2.5" at full adult size.
My choices are limited to what walmart here is selling
Glofish (plan to get 8 at least)
tetra serpae
mixed fruit tetra
Platy
Molly
dwarf cory
ghost shrimp (I will get 3 or more for algae control)
gold mystery snail (same)
black mystery snail (same)
So aside the fish/shrimp/snails I will definately get, how should I use the remaining room? I don't even know if all these fish will get along and eat the similar food. I got the 3 in 1 food which including flake, baby shrimp, granules.
Aside suggestions for the type/number of fish I should get from the list above, if you see any problems with the equipments I am getting or lack of important equipments, please say so.
I am new to tropical aquarium. Thank you!I also bought two small packs of aquarium plants seeds.
1 pack with 8 seeds and with label of
Hybird
Aponogeton
Bulbs
A different package contain two large seeds labeled with
Nymphaea
Lilly Bulbs@ courtney
It's glofish. Not goldfish.
It says they grow up to 2.5" at most.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GloFishI did quite a bit reading in the past week.
And I learned about the cycling.
Since the tank hasn't arrived yet, i can't cycle the tank itself. But I do have a 10 gallon tank at this moment. So I am cycling the items that I already have. The caves, root, blue rocks. Hoping to get some bacteria on these things which I can plant into the new tank later when it arrives to speed of the cycling.
I threw a tiny piece of fish meat into the tank a few days ago. Now the tank water already smell like fish and the ammonia reading was at 3 yesterday.
You think it's a good idea to cycle these items before the actual tank arrive? Which won't arrive for another 2~3 weeks....petsmart is so slow...

moreResolved Question: What type of fish for baby biOrb?
I really like the Baby BiOrb aquarium, but I am not sure what type of fish to put inside. I really like beta fish, though I have heard that they do not do so well in this tank. I am looking for only one or two fish, that are pretty, and easy to care for.
*Also, for the fish, will I need to buy any special accessories?
Any ideas?
Thanks! This aquarium is about 4 gallons with a filter and an optional heater. What about the biOrb original. It is twice the size (8 gallons) and I believe I could fit more fish inside.
Some say that I can put a male and female betta together, and others say not. Which is it????
What about two female bettas together?????
B.T.W. about how many bettas can I fit into the larger tank?????

moreResolved Question: Cloudy tropical fish tank after one day. Why?
Hi. This is my first time looking after tropical fish so please bare with me.
Yesterday I bought baby Biorb aquarium and bought the heater separately to change it from having just cold water fish to tropical. At the same day I bought 4 guppies, arriving home I followed everything the Biorb said, cleaned the bowl & gravel, filled with water, put in the sample water treatment, waited for the right temperature of the water and then gradually added the guppies (sat them in the water in the bag for about an hour and then put them in) & fed them a small amount of food to.
Now I know I made a huge mistake by not leaving the tank to run fish less for 1 week, but I am such a beginner please forgive me.
When they were inside the they looked beautiful against the crystal clear water, so I went to bed.
Next day (today) I went to check up on my guppies and I see them surrounded by what seems to be a cloudy white or grey water. I checked to see if all 4 guppies were alive, which they are, and perfectly seem normal like they did yesterday. But I am so worried because tropical fish are just that bit more expensive then gold fishes and I don't want to be buying new fishes every week.
Please help I am so worried.

I'm deciding between a Hagen Fluval Edge (6gal) http://www.petco.com/product/111569/Hagen-Fluval-Edge-Aquarium-Kit-in-Pewter.aspx?CoreCat=FishFC_Tanks or the Biorb life 45(12gal) http://www.petco.com/product/109706/biOrb-Life-45P-Aquariums.aspx?CoreCat=FishFC_Tanks
I want to make it a saltwater tank, with a clownfish, a cleaner shrimp, and possibly a green spotted puffer, depending on which tank i get.
My dilemma is which tank is more suitable for being a saltwater tank, i've seen a couple youtube videos of both being saltwater tanks. So here are my questions:
Which tank should i get? biorb or edge- big price difference too..
What do i need? protien skimmer etc..
And quick question, i noticed walmart carries the puffer fish but they have it in a freash water tank, aren't the salt water fish?? if i get one from walmart will it affect him if i transfer him from his freshwater enviorment to a saltwater one? will he die??
Thanks!!
moreResolved Question: HELP ! Advice needed about a new tropical tank?
I have never kept fish before. I was thinking of buying a 60litre BiOrb and keeping maybe five little neon fish in it because I have read they are really unsuitable for goldfish etc. I am disabled with severe arthritis and don't think I could manage the water changes on a big rectangular tank though I know they are better than BiOrbs - at least that's what I read on the Internet. I have been to two pet shops and both told me you can just set the tank up and put the fish in, which doesn't appear to be true. I don't mind having an empty tank as I don't want to harm any fish I buy. Can someone give me some advice over whether it would be reasonable to put that many little fish in the 60litre, or if someone can recommend something else. I cannot lift the weight of buckets of water and suchlike and don't know really what to do. I spend such a lot of time at home I thought having a little aquarium would be lovely. I know you are experts out there, please give me some advice. Thank you.
moreResolved Question: Is my baby BiOrb overstocked?
I have a baby biorb, 4gal 15 litres, filtered and heated with some java moss and a few fake plants. I know many fish enthusiasts aren't a fan of these things but it was a gift and before i was fully aware of the flaws i already had the thing up and running.
i do a 25% water change every weekend, and also add some aquarium salt.
i currently have
-3 male guppies
-1 mystery snail
-1 ghost shrimp
my first question is am i overstocking the tank with this set up?
secondly, i'm concerned that guppies may actually need a school of 4-6, can i add 1, 2 or 3 more guppies? i don't want fry so i would get more males, will the males be perfectly happy having no females around?
finally, is the ghost shrimp happy by himself or should he have a tank mate? ie another ghost shrimp.
moreResolved Question: Aquarium Stand Overhang?
I have recently bought an glass 30 ltr (8 gallon) aquarium. I was planning on putting this onto an old Biorb stand that I have but because the stand has a round top and the tank has a square base, the corners overhang. The tank base is 30x30 cms with about 5cms at each end between the corner of the tank and where is meets the base.
Basically, should I get a new stand, a 30x30 cm bit of wood as an extra base or will everything be fine?

Alright, so I have about $400 to spend on it, but obviously I don't need to spend all of that :P I am a somewhat experienced aquarium keeper. I had a 20 gallon aquarium when I was growing up, which I was responsible for cleaning and feeding. I currently have a really basic 5.5 gallon fish tank, and I also have about 5 bettas in various large bowls/small tanks. Ideally, I'd be able to keep one of my bettas in the tank, and it would be relatively low maintenance. I have seen some really spiffy systems like the biorb where everything is housed nicely in the aquarium, and something like that appeals to me.
And the last thing, sad story, I live in a second story apartment and I'm not sure if I'm going to move out within the next few years or not, so maybe I should probably avoid anything too massive, in case I decide to move.
Anyone have any advice for me on this subject? If I made a divided tank for the bettas, how many could I put in?

Yesterday I got a new Betta (male) at Petco, he was the most active --and the prettiest-- one there, he was swimming around his cup, but seemed stressed at the small space he was in. So I took him home and my mom and I held his cup in the water to help adjust the temperature, (which is now 20 degrees C, I know this is probably too cold for him, but right next to his tank I have a lava lamp going and he likes to swim towards it, and look at it! haha..idk. And it surprisinglyy keeps that area of the tank quite warm!) Right now I have him in the 4 gallon Baby Biorb (He loves the Space!!) But to help warm up the tank I'm thinking about getting him this heater: http://www.wearepets.co.uk/fish/fish-products/tropical/heating-lighting/heater-pack
My only concern is that the sides of the bowl are round, so how would I get the heater on??
Also, when I put his food in his aquarium (Betta Bio-Gold) He will not eat it!! He swims right past it!! I know that it's normal for Bettas to avoid eating their food for the first couple days, so is that it??
And one more thing:
He's seemed to have made little "nest" like things in the rocks at the bottom, he nudges the rocks and swims into them and sleeps there, but he is really active for his second day and is mostly just swimming around. Have your Bettas ever made any nest like things??
I'm sorry this was such a long question, but thanks so much for reading it!! :)

What I want to know more than anything, is how big the jellies he has for sale get. He has 2" moons which can go in the "desktop" kit, but then also has 6" moons that go in the "monaco kit." So... I'm not an idiot. I realize these jellies MUST grow, and that a 2" moon will not be able to live a full life in a tiny tank because animals grow (duh).
I'm just so confused... are there ANY type of readily/findable jellies that can live in the desktop jelly aquarium (secretly just a biorb)? He also lists the lifespan as 12 months for both sizes of moons which leads me to believe that his setup isn't very good because the 2" will die in the smaller tank, obviously, and the larger ones die after the same amount of time. Which doesn't make sense at all.
Opinions, comments, suggestions? Are jellyfish ever a good venture for the home aquarist?

I know the tank adapts to different climates, cold water, salt water etc...

moreResolved Question: Big fish in a small tank question?
I have a black ghost knife fish that I bought on a whim which I have never done before because the guy in the shop told me that a 60 litre biorb would be big enough for it and that it would get on great with guppies - I am so angry with this guy! I had to get another tank to put all my guppies in because I woke up one morning to find half a guppy swimming around and now my knife fish is around 6 or 7 inches long in biorb of all things! I have been trying to sell him for over a week with no luck, what will happen to him if he stays in the biorb? Will it eventually kill him? I cant afford and dont have the room for an aquarium big enough for this fish or I would have one already! What will I do?!I dont want to sell him for the money, I just dont want someone to see him advertised as being free and just take him because he IS free, I just want him to go to someone who will look after him in a massive tank!
moreResolved Question: BiOrb heating question for tropical fish- quick answer needed?
I want to buy a baby biOrb- 15 liters. In my LFS they are £50 plus a biOrb heater for £20. I have found the biOrb online for £23 including an Aqua Heater 50w 220-240v, 50-60HZ. I was wondering if it is advisable to use this heater with the aquarium, it's a round aquarium and the heater has no protection so i'm worried about safety- both for electricity and the fish being burnt.
Would it be ok to use this standard heater with the bowl? It would make things a lot cheaper but is it safe- do i need to buy the special biOrb heater additionally?
The reason I am asking is because the person who is selling it hasn't used the heater in it- they've been keeping gold fish. It's just the biOrb seems so easy- everything in one for a good price. The filter light heater come to over £50 otherwise :sthe only other tanks my shop sell in this size are bright pink :Sanyway can you answer the question- is it SAFE and PRACTICAL to use this type of heater in a biOrb? thanks :)About the mini heater- does it have temperature control? And is it powerful enough to keep the tank ten degrees higher than room temp!
moreResolved Question: Plants suitable for a BiOrb? (Small aquarium)?
I have a Baby BiOrb arriving soon that my father is sending to me - What live plants can I put in it so my fish (singular) can both hide and feed? I want to try a small moss ball, because I heard they're awesome at competing for the things algae need, and are fairly compact to start off.
I'm worried about plants growing too quickly, because I have nowhere to rehome or pass on extra plants.
moreResolved Question: BiOrb Aquarium: Use Intelligent LED Lighting System in a Planted Tank?
I've been thinking about getting the intelligent LED lights for my BiOrb aquarium... my tank is heavily planted and is doing well with the halogen light it is currently running with.
If I replace it with the LED lighting system, will my plants continue to photosynthesize energy? If not, how can I keep my plants healthy without a light source that enable photosynthesis?
(I am asking because I am not sure if the lighting system enables photosynthesis or not)
moreResolved Question: Marineland Eclipse Hex 5 vs Baby BiOrb (4 gallons)?
Hello! I have a betta and right now I have one of those cheap 2.5 gallon tanks with the crappy filter that sucks your fish in to ultimate oblvion and I would like to purchase a new tank.
Which one of these tanks would you guys recommend?
The Marineland Eclipse Hex 5 Fully Integrated Aquarium Kit
http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?sku=816469
or the Baby biOrb Silver Aquarium Kit
http://www.petco.com/product/100510/Baby-biOrb-Silver-Aquarium-Kit.aspx?CoreCat=IO-_-ProductDetail_2-_-Baby%20biOrb%20Silver%20Aquarium%20Kit-100510
I liek the designs of the BiOrb but I want to get what I pay for. The Marineland Eclipse also has a 15$ mail-in rebate. Which would, of course, make it the cheaper of the two.
I want a tank I can bring with me to college next summer, a quiet tank with a good filter but not too strong so it won't injure my betta, a tank I can hide a small heater in the back, etc.
I'd like answers to people who have/had either one or both of these, but if not, that's quite alright
moreResolved Question: Is this a suitable Betta Tank?
Sorry! I've been asking SO many questions lately, but I'm just trying to assure the right thing for my fish. This is the last one, promise. Okay, I have a blue betta fish named Marlyn, who is currently in a 3 gallon (i think, 2-3 gal) tank, but it's getting old, and I need a new one. The under gravel filter is starting not to work anymore. I also have to move his tank to my room. So, for lack of desk space, I got this hanging betta bowl. BUT, it is smaller, and doesn't have an under gravel filter, air pump, or light like his old one does. That would be degrading him, and he would barely survive...So, I found this tank, and I will have to put it on my desk, but I really like the design, plus, it's a little bigger than his old one. What do you think of it? http://www.petco.com/product/100510/Baby-biOrb-Silver-Aquarium-Kit.aspx
moreResolved Question: What type of fish could I keep in this tank?
Hi! I was thinking of getting this tank: http://www.petco.com/product/100510/Baby-biOrb-Silver-Aquarium-Kit.aspx
What type of fish could I put in it? Here are my exeptions:
1. The fish obviously can't be large, seeing the size of the tank, 4 gallon I beleive.
2. It can't be a betta, I mean I love betta's, but I allready have one!
3. I have a very small budget.
and 4. They cannot be really dirty like goldfish! I can't clean the tank THAT often with homework these days.
I was thinking of neon tetras or guppies? An info on those?
Thanks!!!!!Um Luke T, I don't live in germany. And what is harrison suppost to mean? I

I recently purchased a baby biorb for my 8 year old sister, to find it was a terrible choice so Im going to get another one I dont know which.
I wanted to get a fish that was quite exciting (I know fishes are boring but you know lol). She loves anything bright, colourful and pretty. This will be her first pet so preferably something that will live for a while and won't die.

What is the best aquarium for it?
I googled a betta. It has a huge tail and looks like something she will like. What would I need for that? Could you tell me a bit about that.
Thanks.Of course my parents will be helping her care for it until she gets the hang of it herself. She's not stupid.

moreResolved Question: Getting a BiUbe Pure aquarium?
I'm going to get a BiUbe Pure. I already have a large aquarium, this is just for decor, to house a small number of my little fish...Anyone care to share vids/pix of their own BiUbe/BiOrb setup? Also, does anyone know if it will be suitable for endlers? I already know that it isn't a suitable habitat for bottom feeders such as otto and catfish as well as Betas. I would also assume that shrimp such as red and white crystal shrimp are not suitable to house in this tank, either... any other tips? Is the airpump sold with the tank suitable or would anyone advise me to upgrade? Also, is the heater a necessary addition, if I'm living in a tropical country?
moreResolved Question: Why is my goldfish gasping for air on the surface?
I purchased a black moor goldfish 2 day ago. It lives in a 30 litre Biorb aquarium (which is also brand new, but had been set up 3 days before the fish was purchased as instructed). For the last 24 hours or so, the fish has continually been at the surface gasping for air in the same spot. The tank has a cylindrical tube up the centre and is therefore well airated. Any thoughts? Thanks kindly.
