Open Question: Why are my tropical fish dying?
I have an 80 GAL aquarium. Every time I put fish in the tank, over time, a couple of weeks, one after another the fish die. I am not new at this as I have had other successful ecosystems/aquariums in the past. I do regular water changes and the only thing I can think of is that there must be something in the tank itself that could be the culprit. When I set up the aquarium that I now have, I added some smooth stones that I found outside of my apartment building. I also have a gold coloured miniature Egyptian statue I bought from the Dollar Store. Maybe the paint is poisoning the fish? I have 2 Clown Loaches, 3 Emperor Tetras, a Beta, 3 Blue Neon Tetras. Anyone have any suggestions? moreOpen Question: Do you think my floor could hold up with a 180 Gal. fish tank?
I am very concerned about the amount of pressure on my floor joists. The floor sits on 2" x 10" joists that lay across the basement 16" o.c. in a span of 12'. The only place to put the aquarium in the house is in a spot where i would have the tank running parallel to the joists. So basically sitting on top of two individual joists that run 12' from center beam in basement to exterior wall in basement. Do you think that two joists will be able to carry the load? or should i sister up the joists? i built a platform for the tank to sit on so the tanks weight is carried to the floor on a 2" x 6" constructed frame that measures 2' x 6' and has a total of 8 joists for the frame to create a box. I am wondering what should I do to have that tank in that spot or will I be okay to leave the floor the way it is? moreResolved Question: I really want to breed my betta's but I need help?
So I have my male betta in a 30 gallon aquarium.. I have been feeding him and the female freeze-dried bloodworms for about 2 weeks. The temperature of his tank is about 80F. For the last 2 weeks I have been floating the female in a bag in his tank for 20 minutes and he flares up and he seems interested. Before moving him into the 30g he was in a small tank, just 5 gallons. he built a bubble nest in there but I ruined it when I moved him obviously. So what I want to know is, will he build another nest in such a big tank? the water isn't completely to the top, its probably only 20gallons full in total. I put the female in the tank and they chase each other. Will he build the nest with her in there? Sorry for the length but I have a lot of questions. I really want them to mate because they have beautiful colors and their babies would be adorable. moreVoting Question: Is this evidence for evolution?
Before you read, I know I know, another one about fish... The topic today is mollies. What? Yes, mollies. Its a cute little fish that people keep as pets. They are often kept in freshwater aquariums, but in truth they are brackish water fish. If you don't know what that is, brackish water is water that has more salinity than fresh water, but not as much as seawater. It may result from mixing of seawater with fresh water. Don't really remember how its made, something about a river entering the sea and the sea water going up the river blah, blah, blah. Anyway (Also as a random side note, they can actually live in marine aquariums if adjusted slowly.) When they were first starting to be domesticated they were completely brackish water fish, but somewhere down the line they started to be kept as freshwater fish. And while now they can be kept as freshwater fish they much prefer brackish water. (They are much more prone to parasites and diseases in freshwater, and can also get a disease called the "shimmies" where they have trouble swimming. It is unknown if this is caused by the lack of salt. Well anyway, over time they built up a resistance, after being kept in freshwater, having offspring, and those offspring living in freshwater, those offspring having offspring...yeah. Mollies are always pregnant if kept with a male, or even if impregnated once. (They have the ability to store sperm for upward 5 batches) They give birth every 3 weeks (They are livebearers) and they grow up fast. Now a days, you actually have to slowly adjust their water to keep them in brackish water, because they have been in freshwater so long! If you don't its very stressful for them and they could actually die. So, anyway. Now that you have that info, is that evidence for evolution? Is that evolution?Forgot to add somewhere in there I wanted atheists and theists opinions... moreResolved Question: Calculus Homework Help Please?

I appreciate that there have already been a raft of related questions regarding this but i don't feel my particular question has been covered. However apologies in advance. Tank cycling : I set up a new cold freshwater aquarium about 6 weeks ago now and have made every effort to do things correctly, researching as much as I can beforehand and during the set-up (even though it can be difficult with so much conflicting advise!) I have a 90ltr Nano with a built in back filter box which I have a selection of filtration media, pump sucking in water and a powerhead pumping it back out. I let the tank cycle for around 2 weeks and to be honest with a little impatience added one 1.5 inch fancy goldfish even though I knew the water quality test results we a less than desirable, however they weren't so bad as to cause too much alarm. One week later I added two Blackmoors and a week after that another small fancy goldfish. I have been monitoring regularly and have been doing 25-30% water changes every week (I add Nutrafin AquaPlus and Nutrafin Cycle each time and will actually be switching to RO water this week). Sometimes with one or even two 10% water changes in between. However, the results I have been recording have not been in tune with what I believe to be the 'typical' cycling levels. PH has been steady at circa 8.2 (is this a little high?). Nitrate recently spiked at about 1ppm but has now gone back to 0ppm. Nitrate, after been 0ppm for the first two weeks gradually moved through 10ppm to 20ppm and has remained there. Ammonia is the real issue. Since day one until now it's been at 4ppm (sometimes verging on 8ppm) irrespective of anything I do. This profile just makes no sense! :-( i can't believe that a 30% water change would not show any change in ammonia readings. I even added a second filter/pump (Fluval U1) inside the tank to bolster up the main filter (not a bio-filter). Please help! Am I wrong in my thinking? It's been 6 weeks now and the tank just doesn't seem to be cycling? Am I just being too impatient? Importantly all four fish seem to be very happy in their environment thus far - especially playing with the air stone and swimming (purposely!) into the powerhead flow stream :-) They are fed small pinches of flakes twice daily and they clear the lot within 2 minutes. No food waste is left in the tank that obvious to see. Many thanks in advanceThanks for the responses peeps but I'm not sure I agree with a couple of things and just wanted to clarify some more. The Nano tank doesn't have a built in filter as such. It's just a segregated section of the tank which allows you to add your own filtration media. A pump sucks water from the tank and pushes it out of a flute at the top onto the first media, then down into the next and the next etc then finally pushed back out into the tank via another pump/powerhead. I have 3 layers of synthetic wool (diff. grades), then two bags of ceramic tubes then activated carbon gravel and dead rock at the bottom. So I wouldn't consider this to be a poor built-in filter if you know what I mean (I may still be wrong!). As for number of fish, I am just following a typically given rule of 1 inch per gallon. I have circa 5 inches of fish in a circa 23 US (20UK) gallon tank so am not sure why my four fish is too many?? I can pretty much agree with all other :-) Thanks for the RO water advice! moreResolved Question: Mopani wood in 2.5 gallon betta tank?
Hi everyone. I've been keeping bettas for a while now, but recently I've really gotten into the idea of planted aquariums. Therefore, I've been keeping a few nice clumps of java ferns, a couple of marimo balls, and bamboo stalks in my two 2.5 gallon aquariums. I have a heaters for both the aquariums since it can get pretty cold in Cali during the winter. I DON'T have a filter though... because I literally can't stand the noise of it. I've tried about three different filters and all have succeeded in making me want to tear my hair out. Therefore, I just put extra work into water changes and cleaning and the such. Anyway, I was wondering what effect mopani wood would have on my 2.5 gallon tanks. I have read that bettas love tannins... and the whole deal about the wonders of indian almond leaves. I am just apprehensive because my tank is unfiltered so there is no way to remove tannins continuously. ALSO because my tanks are so small the tannins could build up pretty fast. So I was just curious- Can mopani wood overdose small unfiltered tanks with TOO MUCH tannin? Is there anyway if I were to add mopani wood to keep this under control? Thanks in advance for the advice! moreResolved Question: things worth seeing in washington DC?

Ok so the girlfriend and i went to Chicago in June for a few days. It was the first time either of us had spent any time in Chicago itself. Booked a room at the Wyndham Chicago because we wanted to be close to the Magnificent Mile. Problem was i booked a king room through Expedia which they were out of when we got there. We had a choice of two doubles or upgrading to a corner suite for about $130 more (which we did). It was my first time using online booking and i was told it only guarantees you the best available at the time. The hotel was nice but pricey even with a discount. We went to the Shedd Aquarium, The Adler Planetarium, The Field Museum, Navy Pier, Lincoln Park Zoo and walked along Lake Shore Drive. We ate at Portillo's (great Chicago dogs), Mr Beefs.Giardanos and Smoquees BBQ (which was awesome). We also ate at Ed Debvnick's which was highly over priced and not worth the time money or effort to get there. We are already planning another visit. So with knowing all that my question or questions are this. What else should we see in Chicago? Gf won't go to Hancock building because she is afraid of heights. We do plan on going to the Brookfield Zoo also. Is there anything to see in Chian town? Any romantic spots to go to? We do not plan on staying at teh Wyndham again to save money we thought maybe the Howard Johnsons on LaSalle. Any thought of wher to stay in that area? Also any other ideas on where to eat. I saw a place on the travel channel called Fat Willy's BBQ that looks good. Would love all your input on where else to go, eat and stay that we haven't already done. moreResolved Question: Ideas for a small goldfish pond?
I just posted a question about a giant flower pot as a water garden on the front porch, but I also want to build one in the back yard so I can enjoy it from my bedroom window while I'm working at my desk. The problem is, that it has to be semi-temporary. I plan on moving out in a few years, and no one will be here to maintain it and enjoy it. I can do a preformed pond, but I don't know if I want to bury it or keep it above ground. I just can't figure out how to "integrate it" into the land around the back yard, since its just a big open yard. Since I'll be leaving, I don't want to spend a lot of time adding rocks and plants around it, so it will basically be a water hole (with plants IN the pond) in the yard. Any suggestions? Should I just stick with the front porch idea and maybe get an aquarium for my room? moreResolved Question: Filmy build up all over aquarium filter?
So I have a 10 gallon aquarium with two filters on it, one is a topfin filter that came with the aquarium when I bought it; the other is a Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel filter (for 20 gallon tanks) that I bought because I had no idea what I was doing when I started out keeping fish and had a huge issue with ammonia. It has been a few months since I've set up my tank, I have gone through the massive ammonia spike (my ammonia was at like 8 ppm or higher, it is at 0 now). I have 3 fish in my tank (balloon molly, red wag, cory catfish) and a mystery snail. Well, my filters are really disgustingly gross.. there is a slimy film all over the base of both filters that will come off in paper looking chunks if you pick at it, and the bio-wheel on the penguin filter has stopped spinning now. Do I need new filter cartridges or what should I do? Someone told me not to change the filter for the first year (wtf?) but online some people recommended changing it every couple months, and others recommended changing it once a week. These are the original filter cartridges on the tank, the topfin filter has been on there since March but was completely rinsed out in May, the Bio-wheel filter has been there since end of April. Please tell me what to do.. I keep getting mixed information and I'm not sure what I need to do to fix this issue. moreResolved Question: Is pvc pipe ok for gerbils? Wheel? Boredom?

I purchased two fancy mice several months ago. They were very small, and looked as if they could squeeze through the bars of a wire hamster cage. The pet store guy said a 5 gallon critter aquarium would be more than enough space, and escape proof. Now I don't think it is big enough anymore. I'm dismantling my 20 gallon terrarium because of a reoccurring cricket problem, and I figure I can just make it into a huge mouse home. It has no lid currently, so I could build something on top. One of my mice likes to climb. One of my mice is very fat and doesn't like to run on the wheel, I would like to encourage her to exercise. What should I include? Okay I've come to the end of my rope. I have been up all night trying to save my aquarium and I am now reaching the limits of what I can do with my current knowledge. Here is the problem I began my tank maintenance two days ago (I spread the work out to avoid over stressing the fish). I started by cleaning the algea from the front of my tank glass and then last night I rinsed out the filter before I headed out for the evening. I got home and the water had turned yellow and two of my fish were gulping air at the surface of the water. I was concearned to say the least so I immediately vacummed the bottom of the tank and treated the water for amonia. Once that was done I also skimmed the surface of the water for slime. This seemed only to agrivate the situation as the water became cloudy and the remaining fish began to gulp air as well. To make matters worse my Flying Fox died and the clown loach was showing signs of passing on as well. I did an immediate 10% water change (bringing the total up to 20% for the night). For a short time this seemed to work and the fish began to recover, but the tank continued to cloud over. Things began to deteriorate again and I was forced to do another 10% water change and then skim the water further for slim which had began to build up rapidly. I was forced to remove the Loach and put it into a quaranteen tank (water was 50% new treated water and 50% old water). The loach not only recovered but showed unpresidented signs of life. I then removed all items from the tank and cleaned them thoroughly (they have not been added to the tank yet) and I vacummed the tank once more, did another 10% water change on top of that and skimmed for Slim as well as a second treatment for slime. If I do any more water changes I am going to risk Ph shock. The tank has been running for at least 3 years and I have had many fish in my past and I am completely comfounded by what is happening. I have read that this may be a bacterial infection but I am loath to us anti-biotics at this point. This is beyond my knowledge. Tank size: 20 gallons Fish: 3 Bala sharks (about 3-4 inches long, I know that I am going to have to move these to a larger tank, I just don't have one yet) and one small clown loach. Plant life: Was obliterated by Flying Fox... seems odd but I watched him eat the leaves on several occasions.Water filter is on Fish are begining to try to jump out of the tank...I am executing a complete water change. Removing fish to fresh water has rejuvinated them. I will replace water and then hopefully they will be okay.Well when I finished responding to the first answer I turned around and in the few moments it took me to type my note my fish looked like they were all about to die. I decided that drastic action was needed. At the time I only had the first answer and a complete water change seemed like the most likely way of saving my fish. Indeed getting them into an old (and very much clean) Ice cream bucket they began to recover within moments. Three of the four remaining fish survive now in a Ten gallon tank I am using as an ad-hoc enviroment (there is nothing else in it) after getting the water out of the 20 gallon I observed that the algea seemed to be secreeting the slime. Its black with a slight green tint. I have never come across this stuff and I am able to confirm that the algea is the culprit because when I scalded the drift wood slime seeped off it in rivulets. I am contemplating the future of the drift wook.Unfortunately in my haste I have failed to save a water sample for testing :( moreResolved Question: Plywood aquarium question?

My family has had a small (i think 18 gallon) reef tank for a few years now, and we've decided we want something bigger. My dad tasked me with coming up with a new tank, and said that it had to be self contained. He wants it to be about 50 gallons, with minimal input on our part. I know that at every store we've been to for coral has had those tanks that basically run themselves. they have one part that grows the nutrients, another that you actually see that has all the coral in it, and as far as I know, they have the whole system automated, so they don't have to do anything but if anyone could confirm this, that would be great. I want to build something like that (only one tank, though) that pretty much runs itself. I am pretty handy with tools, and plumbing is not a problem, but getting it as a kit would be much nicer. About five months ago, my girlfriend and I bought Hamsters, she got a female syrian that is blackish grey and has a cream color section on her bottom. She named it Rukia. I got a male longhair syrian or satin that is tan, white and grey and a runt, I think. He's Ichigo... We like Bleach.. Shhh. Anyway, I got a wire cage and she got a plastic one with tubes and a built in wheel. She then filled her wheel with food and ran in it, new cage, a wire one. Then the bar gnawing began, so we got 10gal aquariums for both. My male has adapted quite well, never a problem, her on the other hand runs about from side to side trying to claw her way up the glass walls, climb on to her house and try to climb onto the wheel from there and then out, and climbing up her water bottle to escape. we have tried ever kind of bedding, chew toy, food, nutrient supplements, locking her in the dark closet in the cage and even taping black construction paper all around to block the light. Everything short of Ritalin. We are at a loss, we tried breeding her to see if that would work, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Comments? Or wild and crazy ideas that just might work? Please HelpLocking her in the cloest means just taking the whole cage and putting in on a shelf we had bare in there. We just dont put her in a ball and leave here in that overnight. Its the only way we can sleep most nights. She does use her wheel, not much thought. Its not that she is active, its that she is only focused on escaping and eating, nothing else. I could understand running back and forth, but to the point where she climbed ontop of her water bottle and bit at the metal mesh lid and hung there from her teeth is a much different story. The wheel I have is a Plastic Silent Spinner one, very nice, my male loves it, spends 5 hours a night on it. As for the cage bars, she wouldnt chew on anything but, have ever type of chew available in there and nothing. It was a top mounted wheel that came with the cage set, big purple monster, tried a metal one after and then the Silent Spinner one, the best so far. Shes a strong girl too, lifting her ceramic bowl and heavy earthen ware house around. moreResolved Question: how to creat an outdoor turtle pond?

Okay I'm not new to fish care in fact I'm really good at it! However, I have a small problem. I ordered fish from San Diego (Cichlids). All of them where healthy except for the Convict who's gills where a little red. At first I thought he was stressed or too much ammonia built up in the bag. (It took 24 hours to arrive) I put him in the tank thinking it would go away when he adapts to the environment. Now three days later I noticed one of my other fish (buttikofori) I ordered was flicking on my decorations. I examined him for Ick and saw no sign of the disease. I added a small amount of aquarium salt as a precaution. Now I'm noticing this weird twitching behavior. The Convict is not flicking or shaking just the Buttikifori. The Buttikifori doesn't have red gills. In addition I would like to add neither fish have a loss of appetite, coloration, spots or basic stress! the water quality is perfect (I just tested it) Could this be gill flukes? Any thoughts please thanks moreResolved Question: can 3/4 plywood hold 250lbs?

let's say you go fishing in a local river and catch a bass, you decide to take it home, you build a pond for it, and you let it live there. I heard this was illegal, but why? moreVoting Question: How long should I wait between changing my filter and doing a water change?
I just put a new filter in my aquarium (eclipse hex 5) How many days do I need to wait for the bacteria in the filter to build up so I can do a water change? moreResolved Question: I am building a paludarium...will this work?
(A paludarium is an aquarium and terrarium built together.) Hardware: I have a 10 gallon fish aquarium. I know it is small. I think that I can make up for it by filling it only 1/3 or 1/2 of the way with water and putting reptile hides in the water to make little islands without taking up too much aquarium space. I am going to glue plastic or resin rocks to the back wall for even more "land" space. Flora: I am going to plant a few hanging air plants and some aquatic plants to avoid using up too much land and I am planning on installing lots of little branches for some reptilian friends to scurry about on. Fauna: I'm planning for about 4 green anoles and a few of those little striped fish. These are all relatively inexpensive and easy to care for. I also want to adopt some kind of miniature catfish a friend has and I think he should be alright with others as he is an algae eater and a school fish. I am also planning for a mystery snail. Questions: Will this work? I want to make sure I am giving a good home to the critters. I would also like to install a waterfall and heater. Is it OK to raise the temperature of the water with a heat lamp? Will the fish mind? The anoles need it. Any suggestions as to how many fish I should have? How many anoles? moreResolved Question: I wanna know how much these things would be to build...?

I'm buying a 5 gal betta tank on friday and it comes with everything but a heater (it's a kit). Everyone has given it pretty good reviews but I have to order it instead of going to walmart and buying it. Anyway, I want to know everything about cycling ! My mom cycled 15 gallon aquariums for about 2 days and the fish lived for about a year untill she overfead all of em O_o I also here that you should wait at least 2 weeks and then others say a month. I'm kinda confused :P Here is what I know about cycling: Set up everything and let it run for ____ days untill it has built up enough good bacteria . Do 50% or 75% water changeat end of cyling ( you test for zero ammonia, nitrate...etc) . Don't have fish in a cycling tank (some are hardy though and can survive). Thanks! moreResolved Question: Sick of people judging me?
I have two daughters ages four and two. I love them with all my heart, love spending time with them, and thank God for them every day. However, I also work (interior design), have a social life (coffee every Thursday with my two best friends), love to shop sometimes without my kids, love having spa days with my sister, and have a live out nanny. I know this sounds like a lot, but I make dinner and eat with my kids six nights a week, get my four year old ready for preschool every morning and get my two year old ready for Toddling Time, and am always taking them to the park, museums, aquariums, etc. (we live in New York so there's plenty of things to do on the weekends). Here's the problem. I am so sick of my mother-in-law, mothers I strike up a conversation with at the park, and some of the mothers in our building judging me. I was a stay at home mom up until a years ago and nearly went stir crazy during those three years. I'm happy with my life. I have a happy marriage, good friends, a job I love, and two great kids. I won't apologize for making time for myself and doing the things I want to do. How can I answer people, who say I'm selfish for spending time on myself and not being a stay at home mom. I don't want to spark a fist fight, but I do want to let people know that I don't appreciate their input.Personally, I think that what I'm doing is good and a happy mom is a happy house hold. Like I said, I do spend a lot of time with my children. I'm not going to be one of those people though, who have date night once every six months and who never gets to see their friends. Just because I'm a mom, doesn't mean I need to spend my days car pooling, making peanut butter sandwiches, driving a mini van, and letting myself go.I'm really sorry if I upset people, by metioning the car pool and the letting oneself go. I wasn't trying to insinuate that STAHM don't work hard or that they are all frumpy and out of date. I just was really unhappy when I was living that life and wish people would understand that it doesn't make me a bad parent, just because I work and have an active social life. moreResolved Question: How do I fix a build-up problem with my fish tank filter and hood?
I have had a 10 gal. fish tank for about 6 years. The fish are doing very well. About a year ago our original filter that came with the tank broke. I bought a replacement filter. But with the new filter I began noticing an immediate huge increase in the amount of white crusty deposits building up. around the top of the aquarium, the inside of the hood, and even on the wall behind the filter. It got so bad that the hood light stopped working. I bought another filter and a new hood about 6 months ago. The problem still persists and now my new hood lights have stopped working already. Do I have the wrong filter? I made sure that the filter said it was appropriate for a 10 gallon tank. Do you have any suggestions for fixing this problem? moreResolved Question: going to chicago next week, is it better to take a taxi or drive own car in the city?
We will be staying at the Wyndham. Places we will visit are Lego Land, The Children's Museum (navy pier), Shedd Aquarium and The John Hancock building. I have read that parking for some of these places is pretty pricey just curious if a taxi fee would be less. Also we are from a small town we there are no traffic jams :) moreResolved Question: Suggestions on building a home made Air Conditioning?

I'm thinking about going with their original items..but I may have found a car radiator from a Dodge Neon for $20 (how much do you think the radiator would boost performance). I've noticed they used tuba wear and Styrofoam to store the cooled water.. What would be the best compartment to store the water? (I'm thinking a glass fish aquarium or a large metal box of some sort. - Thank you.I just got it - a cooler! moreResolved Question: Animals, Wrestling, & Music?
Ok, so when I grow up I want to be an "Animal Trainer & Zoologist" because I love animals and that I'll really would love to work with them, but also I love wrestling such as WWE, WCW, ECW, & TNA, and I do know wrestling is fake but I also thought about becoming a professional wrestler at those two shows (WWE or TNA) if they're still around, and I also love to write raps, I love rapping really much, as much as I do love animals and wrestling, so I thought about why not do it all at once, I've seen alot of other people who do it so why not can I, like the former wrestler chyna for example she was also and still is an Animal Activist even when she was in the WWF/E she was, but the reason I thought of doing all these four things is because I love it as my passion and dream I want to follow, I want to do the rapping and wrestling to make money (and also because I love it) to build a Zoo, Aquarium, Pet shop, & Animal Shelter all in one, and maybe one day call it "PREDATOR PARK ISLAND". and I'm voluntering at animal shelters and zoos, writing music, and trying wrestling as my sport in school. so I just want to know your opinions about this and I'm not here to judge anybody, so let me know your opinions and feel free to explain your dreams.:) moreResolved Question: Poplar, Maple or Oak?

I really want to add another aquarium into my room, but don't have enough space for the size I want. I thought of a great idea, and I'm trying to conserve space.... so do you think this would work? What if I got like a 50 gallon aquarium and had it underneath a loft bed/bunk bed. Are there any safety reasons that I shouldn't do this? And if I could convince my parents (tips please?), how could I make this work? Would I buy a loft bed online and build it over my fish tank? Could I build one? Thanks. This would be my ultimate dream, as fish lover! Sorry this is a weird question. :)I'm glad you think I'm amusing :)I'm glad you think I'm amusing :) more
