moreResolved Question: Which fish tank is better? (pics)?
I am going to get a 10 gallon fish tank, but i need to earn the money to buy one. Keep in mind that i am 14 and i don't have all the money in the world (its all kept away for something real). So i would have to do a bunch of chores and stuff to get one.
Fish tank choice #1, $26, its a tetra kit, the major things are a filter and a heater, and then it has the food and conditioner that kits come with...btw, its 10 gallon. I couldn't find the exact pic. but this is the main idea;
http://img212.imageshack.us/i/bettaaquariumgj1.jpg/
And choice #2, $43, has a hood and filter then all the other junk (hah-also 10 gal.);

I saw them both at meijers today and i wanted to get the cheaper one because the other one is like $20 more. And the prices i had listed were the sale prices because they are having a 15% off jig and all. So, would it be ok if i got the first one?...or is there a reason why the 2nd one is so much better? Anything helps, thankss! :)
-And please don't tell me to get a bigger one, i am getting the biggest one that would fit in the area i have, and yes i do have experience, so please do get all mad at me.

moreOpen Question: Sick Goldfish Please Help?
I have a 1 inch goldfish. I don't know what kind it is it's just one of those 49 cent cheap goldfish you get t petco. It lives in a 1 gallon aquarium with an air pump, artificially colored gravel substrate, 2 artificial plants, a fish only sign, and a shark with it's mouth open. Yesterday I found it curled up in the sharks mouth. When I tapped on the glass it started swimming out of control. So I took him out of the tank and put him in a plastic cup with new water and I added water conditioner. I could see he was doing better already. I thought he might have swim bladder so I fed him peas. I wasn't sure if he ate them but he got completely better and he was swimming around fine in the cup so I did a complete change. I dumped everything out. I scrubbed the tank. Rinsed the rocks. Cleaned inside the air pump with a sponge. Rinsed the artificial decor. I cleaned everything completely. I put cold water in the tank with conditioner and put him back in. I went in to check on him about 12 o'clock and he was begging for food. So I fed him a teeny tiny bit. I went to check on him about 3 o'clock and he was swimming funny (wasn't curled up). This was at night not day. I usually stay up this late. I awoke in the morning to find him curled up at the bottom of the tank like the other morning. I immediately took him out and put him in the cup and put cold water and conditioner same as last time and fed him peas. Didn't work . Now it's about 7 30 pm and he's and the bottom of the cup curled up. Not even tapping the cup would work. He wouldn't move. One thing I have noticed is his gills are puffing out and in like crazy. It's like he has gill hiccups. I've never seen his gills expand that much. Every 2 seconds they expand and close. At first I thought it was swim bladder but I haven't fed him anything but peas and he won't eat them. The first time I put him in the cup and he got better. Now he's doing worse. And i don't know what's up with his gills. Every one in a while his eyeballs act like their gonna pop out when his gills expand. Please help me. If you say he's going to die please explain why. I understand he's probably gonna die but what's the cause? I was thinking maybe the shark has something to do with it because both mornings he was in the shank or near it. He usually doesn't go in the shark so I knew somehing was wring he was trapped.
moreResolved Question: What Kind Of Fish Can I Put In A 55 Gallon Aquarium With My Neon Tetras?
I just recently bought a 55G fish tank off of someone so i could get my Neon's out of the cheap round tank they are in. Not to mention catching such small fast fish in a round tank with a square net is not fun. But i would like to make my tank very life like. I am buying sand colored stones and in search of realistic plants, rocks and wood. I am having no problems finding ideas on the internet about set up but i cannot find any information on what fish i can add together. I know my neon's prefer the water temp. to be 76-80 degrees with a PH of 5.0-7.0. I also have one male beta that lives with my neon's and his preferred temp is 80 degrees with a PH of 6.8-7.4. So those fish i can keep together due to their needs being close. I am trying to figure out what other breeds of fish i can keep with them, the only thing i am coming up with are other tiny fish. I understand you don't want to put HUGE fish in with small fish because the small fish will become food, but there has to be some decent sized fish i can add to the tank. I love my neon's and betta because they are bright red and blue, im looking for bright attractive fish. Any ideas?Note:
Not only am i looking for display fish, but cleaning fish to. Like catfish, suckers, ect. Ones that help with matience on the tank. They dont have to be attractive fish. So names of certain types of catfish or if there is diffrent types of sucker fish would be helpful. I was also told to add ghost shrimp but i cannot figure out what good they would do me.* I am deffinatly adding more neons. I have 10 now and do plan on making my school bigger by 10-20. But i dont just want a tank full on neons, i want varity with other colors and personalities.

moreOpen Question: What size tank is right for fish?
Hi,
I have a pond in my backyard and I am going to move all the fish I can into a tanks for the winter. The pond is a man made rock pond with about 2,000 gallons. The biggest fish is a koi that is about 5 inches long. I have 5 koi in there now and the rest are about 3 to maybe 4 inches. What would be a good size tank for them? There is also about 20 goldfish in there. (all fish put in in the beginning of summer). So what type of tank would work best for all of them? If you think it will be much cheaper just to use the koi I can do that. My mother made an idea to let some of them go in the river. So whats your opinion?

moreResolved Question: How to move my Betta Fish to new Tank?
Okay, so I've had great success here asking questions, so here I go again asking for your lovely peoples help! :)
I've had my Betta for a month now, he's in an Aquaeon Mini Bow 5.0 (5 Gallon) Acrylic Tank with a small heater, AquaClear 20 Filter, and some aquarium Gravel, Silk Plants and 2 small Caves.
Now My little sister just bought a Betta, and to avoid her keeping him in a 1 gallon Closet, I offered to give her my tank, and upgrade mine to a 10 Gallon Glass Aquarium that they sell at Petsmart. A very standard setup, nothing crazy.
Now here are my numerous questions/concerns. I understand that the 10 gallon will no longer be cycled as I will be starting from scratch again, however I plan on carrying over my Old filter which has its bacterial Colonies all in order, is this okay?
I also Plan on bringing over some of the silk plants, with possibly getting new ones. However I've always wanted to experiment with real plants. Yet i'm afraid of rotting, and parasites, and all that jazz. If I were to try and incorporate live plants, what precautions would I need to do rid them of parasites/disease before adding them.
Turbo (my fish) will probably not like moving after getting comfy. But I feel like this will be better for him and the other fish. Plus he's doubling his home!
Also, Are glass tanks not as nice to have as Acrylic? i know glass is cheaper, and I did some research on the two. But I wanted to see what other fish owners had to say.
Thanks!!!Sorry I forgot to mention! Filter is good for 5-20 gallon tanks with adusting flow. So its set at lowest now, but in my 10 gallon tank it should work fine!

All and all in the end (with the cheapest options i.e. hermit crab sand would be replaced with home Depot play sand which is proven safe) anyway, What will be cheaper with all the supplies? Sorry for the confusion also about the butterfly fish I just wanted more input, I was told at a pet shop that the Oscar and butterfly fish may be fine or may not that it was a 50 50 chance. If I did get a Butterfly fish I would start out with a Large one and a small oscar, Also I was told the danios get from 4 to 6 inches and would be just fine. If he eats em I'll just go and buy some bigger ones, I hope he doesn't though. Also could you elaborate on the need for more danios? Also thank you for all your help it's really helped me out :)
moreVoting Question: My parents won't let me get another hamster ): ?
Well , August 2008 I got a little dwarf hamster , he was the sweetest little thing , but he didn't last incredibly long with me , one : cause he got a tumor and because he was already 4 months old when I got him , since he was returned . He died in September 2009 , and I was really really heartbroken , because he was my first pet I had ever had ... Since he died , our family adopted 2 cats . I have my own kitten , and of course I love her so much , and all my friends think I'm so lucky to have her , and I know I am , but I'm like , dying for another hamster ... And it's really not fair , because my sister has her own cat too , and a hedgehog (which she bought not long before I bought my hamster) and she's just lucky that hers has lived longer than mine otherwise she wouldn't have a pet . And she never ever cares for her hedgie anymore , she's always paying all her attention to the kitten . My sister also has five guppies , and in the half year she's owned them , not once has she cleaned their tank . I had a betta , who died a while ago , and I got him not long after my hammie died, and before we got our kittens, even after the kittens , I still took good care of him . Anyways , so I made my point to my parents that , if my sister has a cat, fish , and a hedgehog , why can't I just get a hamster too ? And my parents know I can take really good care of a hamster , like I did before ... And my parents said , your sister still had her hedgehog before the cats , and she won't be able to get another one after her hedgehog dies ... But hedgehogs can probably live like, 10 years, she'll be moved out by then, and in that time I could have like , 4 hamsters ... Anyways , I want to set up a big fish tank , but it's gonna cost a lot of money , it would be WAY cheaper to buy a hamster, since I already have a cage ... But my parents won't listen... I first convinced my parents to let me buy a hamster by showing off my knowledge about them , and now I can't do that again, they already know I know.... Help?Hah, didn't I kinda explain my sister is awful at taking care of animals? 6 months, she hasn't cleaned her fish tank, she feeds her hedgehog once in a while but hasn't taken him out to play ever since we got our cats. And also two of my sisters guppies have died, and she had a whole tank of hermit crabs that died because when we went on a vacation she didn't bother getting someone to care for them. I've had one hamster and one fish die in two years... that's really no big dealDwarf hamsters only live 1-2 years, though syrians do live longerI paid for EVERYTHING with my old hamster, and my sister is 14, I meant that in 10 years she'd have already been moved out

moreResolved Question: Should I get a Greek Tortoise or Bubble Eye Fish?
I've been wondering which one to get. Here are my pro's and con's and etc.
GREEK TORTOISE:
Pro's.
-Fun to watch
-Can let it roam the house
-Can take it outside to eat some grass, dandelions, etc.
-Can actually interact with it
Con's.
-Supplies are over $150 (that's a lot of babysitting hours)
-Lots of work/responsibilty (cleaning tank, giving calcium, vet visits, etc.)
BUBBLE EYE FISH:
Pro's.
-Very cute and funny to watch
-Doesn't take up too much space in house
-Fairly cheap (under $100 for fish and supplies)
Con's.
-Can't interact with a goldfish
-Hard to mantain because bubble eye fish are more sensitive than other fish
-Might die more easily (how people have killed goldfish in the past...)
SO, please tell me what you think I should get! :) Or...should I get both?
Haha thanks!@Rockstar
Actually, if you read carefully I meantioned I wanted a Greek TORTOISE. They're different from turtles, who live in water. Tortoise live on land and don't smell as bad as turtles. I've had turtles before...I would know! Haha!

I'm just worried for my carinal tetras...I have 11 in there and I want as many to survive, I just got them today so the stress from moving and now a tiny ammonia spike is not pleasant for them. moreResolved Question: Getting a fish tank...help?
I posted earlier with no responses.
I hope this post isn't too long.
Anyways, I may be fostering dogs soon. My parents say that they want to see if I'm able to handle the responsibility before I actually get one, so it was my idea to foster (: If a dog doesn't work out, though, then I'm going to be sticking with fish. Right now I only have a small 2.5gallon with a Mystery Snail, two male guppies, and a little tiny sucker fish.
So, in the asumption that a dog doesn't work, I need to know roughly what all I'm going to need to keep an aquarium (freshwater) and how much it's all going to cost me.
Yes, before you all lecture me, I'm an experianced aquarium owner. We had one when I was a few years younger, before my parents divource. I remember always watching my mom changing the water, changing the filter, etc., and I would help. Any -tips- on how to run one would be helpful. Like, how long does it need to cycle first?
I have about $400 that I can spend, so I need to know what size tank I can/should get&what supplies, while still staying within my budget. (That includes fish, too).
I'll probably shop at Petsmart for supplies, since they're cheaper there and have pretty much the same items.
Thank you so much (:
moreResolved Question: I just got a new fish tank and need some help?
I have a gold fish in a little cheap 1 gallon tank. after a while I learned he needed atleast a 10 gallon. I went out, got a tank, filter, and conditioner. I know the conditioner needs to take affect on the water for 24-48 hours, but I did hear something about cycling...now I know it has something to do with good bacteria in the water. How long should I wait for it to cycle enough for the fish to live in it, and will adding some water from the old tank to the new one, help with the bacteria issue?the tank the fish is in now has no filter. Ive just been cleaning it and adding new water (i let the water sit out over night to let the chlorine and other chemicals in tap water, die off)
Since the water is mildly dirty, is it okay to add it to the new tankthe tank the fish is in now has no filter. Ive just been cleaning it and adding new water (i let the water sit out over night to let the chlorine and other chemicals in tap water, die off)

moreResolved Question: My fish are dying from ich?
My husband and I bought fish about a weeks ago and have lost several of them to ich we've been treating the tank but we have a lot of neon's and catfish that aren't responding well. We lost all of our fish in november to ich and we finally decided to fill the tank back up, we purchased all new stuff the only thing is the fish we bought last time and this time came from the same store. What should I do? Should I call the pet store and try to get a refund? Or just let it go?? In the past 2 weeks we've spent over $400 in there I think they should give us some kind of a refund or something we have spent quite a bit in there and have not only bought our hamster and guinea pig in there but everything we need for them as well which isn't cheap. Should I let go or try? Or am I wasting my time I'm just irritated with a 55 gal tank this isn't cheap or easy to deal with. Plus I feel horrible for the poor fish.
moreResolved Question: 240 Gallon Saltwater Fish Tnak good Deal?
SO i Came across a 240 gallon fish tank and just wanted to to know if it was a good deal or not.
The tank is a 240 Gallon Salt Water aquarium, it has a 36W Turbo twist UV Filter, a sump that has a pump, bio balls and large protein skimmer. I forget the name and size, but it is 3 times bigger then the tank needs so you are very good to go. It also has a NuClear filter with very large pump. The ring on the NuClear may need to be changed though. They are very cheap and can be found easily online. The fish in the tank are as follows;
1 - Dog Face Puffer
1 - Porcupine Puffer
1 - Wrasse - I forget the name of it, but very colorful (cannot be mixed with other Wrasses though)
2 - Toad Fish - 1 large and 1 very large
1 - Angler - I forget the type it is its a spotted, but cannot remember the type. Its like a brownish maybe turquoise color
1 - Rabbit Fish
1 - Rare Squirrel Fish - He is a very dark red with golden fins except the top fin is a very vibrant pink
Huge amounts of live rock and the bottom of the tank is coral and sand mixed. The tank has always been professionally maintained and has been running for 1 year now.
Its on Sale for $350.00
moreResolved Question: Is this a good setup for 1 comet gold fish ?
i saw this video on youtube of a person who had a 20 gallon tank and his comet goldfish had lived for 40 years. And I was wondering can I keep 1 comet goldfish in a 29 gallon tank with a filter, also would you suggest an air pump w/ air stone or would you suggest a secondary cheap filter? Would my filter be giving the fish air or is an air pump needed?

Comes with 29 gallon tank (obviously)
a 30 gallon filter

I was hoping to get African Clawed Frogs but i didn't want a tank that was to tall. Also something that is cheap and possibly available at a local store like petco, petsmart, or walmart. Also is there any gravel at Petsmart that the African Clawed Frogs cant fit in their mouths?
moreResolved Question: Which canister filter should I buy?
I currently have a fluval 305 canister filter for my 55 gallon parrot fish (cichlid) tank. It works well, but I find myself waiting longer than I should to do filter changes, because I don't like trying to restart the filter. It's supposed to self-prime, but it doesn't. I end up making trips back and forth from the kitchen emptying the thing out and trying to get it started again. I've also had it leak on me once, and I did nothing wrong. In fact, it leaks on me about 1/3 of the time. I want to make a change, and I have heard Eheim is a GREAT brand. I am used to filling filter bags, and using sponges and baskets, so that's no big deal. In fact I think buying that stuff in bulk and putting it together is cheaper than cartridges, isn't it?
Drs. Foster and Smith.com is having a good sale on filters right now, so I will likely buy from there.
