Resolved Question: how do I remove silicone sealant from my acrylic aquarium?

I made my own aquarium by melting acrylic pannels together with methylene chloride. Unfortunately, it leaked. I put on some aquarium silicone sealant, and it still leaked in one place. So now I'm trying to remove the silicone sealant so that I can try again- but I'm concerned that if I buy a "silicone remover" compound (in a tube or something) that it will compromise the joints. I don't want this thing to fall apart when I try to scrape off the silicone. Any ideas on how to do it short of manually scraping it (it's a long, arduous process, well underway)? If you tell me to re-apply the silicone without cleaning off the old, you won't get the best answer. I need to know how to remove silicone sealant from acrylic (specifically polymethylmethacrylate) without damaging the acrylic. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: I only have a couple questions ;)?

What do you use to clean your horse's water tub out in pasture. Mine is covered in algae and the last time I cleaned it, it didn't work I used one of these: http://www.petco.com/product/110929/PETCO-Algae-Scraper-with-Handle-for-Acrylic-Aquariums.aspx and what do you think of putting goldfish in the water. What would happen if one died and he tried to eat it, if it wasn't diseased. And if i put it in there do i need to use water conditioner so it doesn't die like at home? I'm only keeping them in there till the algae is minimal or take them out during winter went the temperature gets too cold for them. Sorry I guess that was a few questions, but thanks for the help :)what do you use to scrub the algae off, i plan on doing that tomorrow :) more

Voting Question: Marineland Eclipse 6 aquarium filter not working please help!?

http://www.bestpetsuppliesguide.com/wp-content/uploads/marineland-eclipse-acrylic-aquarium-system-6-gallons.jpg This tank, I am the process of cycling my tank. I ordered some live Tahitian moon sand to the tank but I forgot to turn off the filter while adding it so it's completely my fault I think because the filter stopped working after this. I've tried to clean out the filter as best that I can, there doesn't appear to be any clogged sand or anything. It sounds like it's working but then it wont suck. a little sand might have gotten inside but I don't know how much. What should I do to get it to work again? I poured water into the filter too and it still wouldn't work. Is there any hope for it or do I need to get a replacement? more

Resolved Question: Betta Fish: new filter and heater, water changes, HELP PLEASE!?

Okay, so my 2.5 tank I got had a minibow whisper filter that was a bit too strong front my male crowntail betta, so I went and bought a new one! The filter is a "Tom Aquarium Products: Mini Internal Filter" The back says: Complete 3-stage filteration-mechanical, chemical and biological. Foam cartride quickly traps unwanted waste material while the premium carbon removes other pollutants and odors. Choice of spray bar attachent or flow diffuses promotes optimum surface water movement. Attaches easily to wall with 5 sution cups. Voltage is 12V) for safe operation in water. Adjustable water flow up to 45 gallons per hour. It says for 1 to 5 gallon aquariums! Now I also got a heater! The tempreture of our house stays around 74-78 degrees, because it fluctuates so much. The heater I got is a Hydor Mini Heater for 2-5 gallon aquariums. Here's the specs: FOR MINI 7,5 W Size: 5,7 x 2,3 inches Aquarium: 2 gal, temp increase: approx 5 F Aquarium: 5 gal temp increase: approx 4 F FOR MINI 15 W Size: 6,2 x 2,4 inches, Aquarium: 5 gal, temp increase: approse 5 F Aquarium: 10 gal, temp increase: approx 4 F It says that the difference between the amibient room temp and the aquarium temp. reached by using MINI can vary due to location and lighting. Always check water tempreture with a thermometer. I don't have a themomert....but I put the aquarium on an old TV shelf that has a shelve over it, so it's fairly shaded... Will this heater and filter be safe in my tank for my betta? :) Any tips, etc etc etc would be great with these products! I changed the filter because the other filter (Mini Bow Whisper) made too strong of a current...My betta had to constantly swim and he hid often behind the filter itself...where the current wasn't as strong. So I though changing it may be better. Also! I have painted nails (acrylic nails with black polish) so I'm iffy about putting my hands in the water....My dad got me some latex gloves (The big yellow ones people clean with) that have cloth inside....and he got me some rubber, doctors gloves. Are these safe to use when adding and cleaning my tank? ONE MORE THING! ^^; When I do my water changes, I usually allow my water to sit for 24 hours with dechlorinator drops in it....He is on maracyn at the moment for finrot...do I still need to continue with my water procedures or change a half gallon? How much do I add for the water change? Do I do a full tank change with the maracyn or....? I'm confused. I only add 1/4 of a packet per day, but do I need to do a water change with the maracyn? I'm confused on my water changes for a 2.5 gallon tank.....This IS my first time using a tank so....I'm very cautious.... Thanks so much! For the 'house much do I add to a half gallon' was referring to the medicine ^^;I, again, would like to point out that the 2.5 gallon is perfect for him...it's a lot bigger than I thought....he's the ONLY fish I have...there are no others, and there are 2 plants, fake, and two bulbs growing. My parent's will not allow for a 5 gallon, which what I perfered, and the pet store said it wasn't needed, which is why I ended up with the 2.5 in the first place...^^; more

Resolved Question: Aquarium sump question, can't i just use this...?

Ok so i really would prefer a sump to my canister filter, they are easier to clean, remove carbon for medical treatments, increase water content, blah blah thing is, i have no money. can i just use a plastic box instead of a glass or acrylic aquarium? as long as it can hold the water and it is safe chemical-wise. I'm getting the box from ASDA (wallmart) or tesco or whatever but i need to know if i can use this first. Thanks for your answers :) more

Resolved Question: Is this a good aquarium?

This is a 50 Gallon tank. And its ONLY around $200. Thats so cheap. So I really want it. But is it good? Experienced aquarists, what do you think? http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753080 Is it worth it? Also, since its acrylic, will its scratch if i clean it with a special acrylic magnet cleaner. Its specially designed for acrylic tanks, so I think it should not scratch, right? thank you more

Resolved Question: I need to know if my Betta Fish aquarium setup is acceptable before I add a live male betta. ?

For the last 5 years, I've done a lot of research on aquariums, betta fish, plants, substrate, etc and everything I have read has been contradicted by at least two other sources! Here is what I've pieced together and would love to get some feedback on if this is the best method. I don't simply want to OWN a betta fish; I want to be a really good lifetime home for him. I have purchased a 3 gallon Tetra acrylic aquarium with a small Whisper low current filter and LED light. I have had my water tested and discovered that it does not need to be treated (only allowed to sit 24 hours) but I've still added the recommended dose of treatment liquid formulated for Betta fish. The tank has sat 24 hours with the filter off and will be another 24 hours with the filter on. I am going to add small glass pellets for substrate (I am washing them and running an old panty hose stocking over each to check for snags before adding them). I would like to add a live Anubias plant tied to a chunk of driftwood both as an ornament and as a hiding place for the fish. I would ultimately introduce two small snails to the aquarium, but I am waiting to make sure that I don't get any accidentally with the live plant. The betta would still live essentially alone; no other fish or anything. For care, I was considering feeding two prepared pellets of a manufactured betta fish food and then an evening feeding alternating various frozen "live" foods (I've noticed that petco has a great selection). I adore live crabs, but I don't think one would coinhabit safely with the betta so I have a tiny plastic one on order. :) For cleaning, I am planning on removing the fish to a bowl with around half of his own water, then cleaning the remaining half of the tank with the glass pellets to make everything super clean before adding him and his own water back in and filling the remaining space with treated water. Is there anything I am missing or need to improve on? I just want to have a really good plan before actually getting a fish. Thank you!! more

Resolved Question: will this work as a fish tank?

My friend just gave me a 20g acrylic tank but he used it as a terrarium and i am not too sure if it will be safe to turn it into an aquarium. What i mostly would like to know is will it hold water safely, how i would clean it out if it can hold water, and if this is a stupid idea. Thank you more

Resolved Question: What do you do about Algae in aquarium?

Hiya. We have had aquariums for over 30 years. Have maintained them with live plants, good lighting, etc. Trops and goldfish. This past Christmas we 'treated' ourselves to a new tank, first new one in 20 years. This tank is a bowfront acrylic. the one other tank we still have is glass, probably 20 years old. Both have live plants, both have plant lighting. Both get algae growth. The bowfront does get indirect morning light if I forget to draw the blinds. It's on the other side of the room from the windows, but the morning light will cross the room. the problem is the algae. While the glass tank gets what looks like the same type of algae--starts as green spots, covers the sides--it wipes off easily with a terry cloth. the bowfront--it sticks like it's welded on. Is it the acrylic? How do you deal with this problem? We have used the recommended brushes which are not supposed to scratch the surface--there does not APPEAR to be scratches, and the surface feels very smooth once the algae is removed. the last time we used a soft abrasive pad that is used on glass range tops. It wasn't easy to remove, but it came off OK. Now, a couple of months later, the algae is back and I dread having to clean off the sides again, as the job is time-consuming and difficult. what do you acrylic tank owners use to clean off algae? Is there a recommended product that will prohibit algae growth and not harm the live plants or the fish? We've had tanks a long time, as I said, but never had such a problem dealing with algae! Before I throw the tank out in the yard, please offer any other methods of cleaning this tank. Thank you! OlddocThanks S-moore. We have 3 chinese algae eaters, and while they keep the rocks clean, the algae on the sides has them baffled. We never tried shrimp. Guess we will! more

Resolved Question: Acrylic nails?

Ladies who have had acrylic nails, I need your help! I am attending a gem and jewelry show to buy some rings so obviously there will be a lot of focus on my hands. My natural fingernails are a nice shape but I would like to have something a little more interesting as I am not very good at painting them (okay, terrible at painting them) I think it would be nice to get a medium length acrylic nail with a french manicure, but I've heard it is horrible for the nails underneath? I am fairly domestic also so have to have my hands in water for cleaning my aquariums and doing dishes. Can they tolerate being in water for an hour to two hours a day? (Maybe a little more for swimming occasionally) How bad are the nails underneath when they come off, and how long do they usually last? Thanks =) more

Resolved Question: How can I tell if my aquarium is glass or acrylic & how can I find local tropical fish stores?

My boyfriend had gotten me a 20 gallon tank from his aunt. I've been keeping fish for about 4 months now. I see products for cleaning aquariums, some are for acrylic & some for glass. I hope it doesn't sound stupid, but I don't know how to tell if mine is glass or acrylic. How can I tell. And Is there a site where I can find out all the local fish stores w/in like 100 mile radius? There's not much in my city & I know of one that's doesn't show up when doing a search in the yellow pages, so I think there may be more that just aren't listed in the yellow pages. How can I find out where all the tropical fish stores are? Thanx! more

Resolved Question: Cleaning Acrylic Light Shield (mineral deposits) for Aquarium Ballast / Hood?

My light's acrylic shield has white mineral deposits from dried tank water. Its an african tank with high water hardness. The air bubbler sends little droplets of water up & they dry on the sheet of acrylic protecting the lights. I know you can use a razor blade on glass to get this stuff off, but what about acrylic sheets? Some sort of chemical? I'm afraid of scratching the sheet & reducing the level of light that comes through it even further. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this freak out?

T Why do you think this lady is making weird accusations about libel instead of helping her fish? Open QuestionShow me another » HELP! I have 4 goldfish and I'm clueless... and now having power filter problems!? So I have a 2.5 gallon little tank for my daughter (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... and we have 4 goldfish in it. The power filter that came with the tank is not working now. I can hear it running, but there's no water coming out of it. I've tried changing the cartridge in it, but still nothing. I have NO idea what I'm doing with any of this :( Some of our fish now have bloody looking noses, and I'm sure it's from this, whatever the hell is wrong! Any suggestions?? 2 hours ago - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details 2 hours ago They're little fishies, the carnival kind! Well 2 of them are, the other two are fantails. The filter does have water in it. We got 4 fish last August and 2 of them died about a month ago. We got 2 fantails at that time and all 4 have been fine until now. The power filter has been working fine since we got it, same time as the original 4 fish. It messed up once, and 2 fish got bloody noses... I changed the cartridge and cleaned the whole tank and it was fine. The fish recovered, too. It was cleaned a few weeks ago and I added a solution for the water (dechlorinator?) and they've been fine until now. I just now noticed the bloody noses, and the stupid filter not filtering. 2 hours ago The link is: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d... My goodness. 18 minutes ago I didn't ask for egotistical assholes to "answer" my question so they can bash me with rude comments and assumptions. I am NOT a cruel person and in NO WAY agree with ANY kind of animal cruelty or neglect. I'm trying to do the best I can, fix the problem, and help these fish. Your asshole comments are making the fish suffer more. If you had just given me advice, they'd be out of pain already. How do you feel now tough guy? PS: You making these assumptious, inaccurate comments about me is called LIBEL and is AGAINST THE LAW. 8 minutes ago I'm speaking of you making comments stating that I have no problem with animals suffering. THAT is libel, it's illegal, now go away. 7 minutes ago PS: I already took a screenshot before (and after) you deleted your illegal comments :)Thanks for the answers. I find it interesting that she thinks libel is when someone points out she is not taking good care of her fish, but she doesn't think it's libel when she calls people every name in the book. If this really was libel, it goes both ways. I think I will look into a lawsuit!! more

Resolved Question: How do I clean a hazy acrylic aquarium?

My aquarium looked great with fish, water & all. But I sold the fish and poured out the water. The dry tank is hazy. I tried cleaning with a mix of vinegar & distilled water. It's helped, but not much. I tried Tetra Aquarium Wipes. Those dry with a weird residue. One site suggests bleach, but I'm not so sure about that because I do hope to sell this to someone to put fish into. This is weird. The aquarium was clear & beautiful when it had water in it. So, how do I get this clear? Will bleach help without hurting future residents?? more

Resolved Question: Any advice for changing filter types in an aquarium?

I have a 2.5 gallon acrylic Hex tank with a male Betta and a mystery snail. The tank has been completely cycled for quite some time now. The tank came as a package (TopFin AquaScene 2) with an undergravel filter. The filter seems to be working ok, but I keep hearing so many negative things about UGF filters. Plus, there seems to be a lot of surfarce agitation from the air pump bubbles and my Betta can't create bubble nests. I would like to replace the UGF with a small 3 gallon in-tank filter that I have in a different 2.5 gallon tank. Is it ok to change fitler types in a cycled tank? If I do, do I have to re-cycle the tank? Do I need to completely clean out the bottom of the tank, below the UGF plate? Or just remove the plate?... more

Resolved Question: What should I sell my Aquarium for?
