Open Question: Aquarium (Tropical Fish and Shrimp Colony)?
Greetings to all aquarium enthusiast!
This is my first time to set up a fresh water aquarium and have a bunch load of questions in stock to ask all aquarium gurus out there.
Initially I was thinking of setting up a tank purely for tetras and guppies but also took interest in cherry shrimps as well.
The tank is a 80L which is sufficient enough to raise the fish but is it also possible to have a small colony of 15 cherry's?
What impact would the cherry's have on the tank eco system if they formed a colony?
I've done some separate research about this and some people seem to have small number of shrimps (max 5) but no place offered a clear answer in regards to colonies.
Also I want to plant a partial carpet (partial to leave some space for bottom dwellers) but what's the best recommended plants for this?
Some videos on you tube show very soft looking lawns with some commenting it's java moss but when I looked at the individual java moss plants they looked very rough.
I've also seen some people suggesting it's Hemianthus callitrichoides though I never had a chance to come by to see the real.
I still have more questions to ask but I'll stop my rant from here so I don't kill everyone from boredom.
Thanks for looking at this and I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions that might guide me through my first set up!
Have a nice day!
moreOpen Question: How can you tell in a 5 gallon aquarium with 2 goldfish koi and a small beta fish......?
if one is pregnant? I know nothing about fish and my 6 yr. old son is the owner of these little guys and we noticed that the larger of the 2 goldfish koi has gotten very heavy around the middle area and today we noticed 5 pieces of what looked like premature fish floating on the top of the water, it looked like tiny fish with no insides, very clear and a dot where eyes would be. The small beta fish would float next to it and push it with his nose and then swim away, no eating or anything. Any help is appreciated and we just want to help out the fish anyway we can, again, this is all new to me, thank you ;)
moreOpen Question: Cleaning Gravel for Aquarium?
I'm setting up a new aquarium and am afraid I didn't clean the gravel well enough the first time. We used about 35-40 lbs of gravel for our 20 gallon tank and had no bucket or colander, so we put the gravel in the tank, filled it to about halfway, moved it and the water around, and sucked out most of the dirty water. We repeated this process three or four times before filling up the tank completely. The first four or five gallons of new water was slightly cloudy, but as we filled up the full 20 gallons, the water became much clearer. Now that we've had the filter running for about 16 hours, the water is very clear. We've already added conditioner, so I don't want to disturb the tank again until I add the fish - which is in another couple days (a goldfish or two and maybe three barbs or tetras).
Would this possibly affect my fishes' health down the road? Thanks! Thanks for all the helpful answers so far! I'm actually adopting fish from a friend who is downgrading her tank. She's moving in a couple weeks and it would be problematic for her to transport all her fish, but I couldn't get my tank set up until yesterday because I moved last week as well...is there any way to speed up the cycling process...?

i have a tank and it has a light installed on top of it but when the light shines it keeps showing that the water is yellowish but actually the water is very clear and white so i would like to ask whether the light is reflected to the gravel as my gravel is yellow so my water looks yellowish?

I set up a 20 gallon long tank with an aqua-clear 70 filter. I use anubias nana plants throughout the whole tank. I only use ro / di water in all my aquariums. The tank has been cycled and ready to go. The ph-7 water very soft from the ro filtration. Ammonia nitrites and nitrate all at zero. I never over stock my tanks, just wondering whats a good number of them to have in a 20 gallon long tank.

i did my weekly water change in my 26 gal on wednesday, i took out too much by mistake,( water was draining in the bucket and phone rang, like 2 gal to much.)and it was very cloudy for 2 days and it is perfectly clear today and did my water test and everything's ok now, did taking out too much water cause this?
moreResolved Question: Is my fish tank okay? (10 points)?
Today for my 5.5 gallon betta tank I cleaned the tank about 30% and since it looks like my betta fish has fin rot, I added some aquarium salt into the new water. I removed my betta fish from the tank and he's in a cup right now. Anyway the brown stuff from my tank filter went everyone in the water so I scooped it out with a fish net (because I was cleaning it in the old tank water), and also when I took my aquarium decorations out the brown gunk went flying everywhere in the water. Well my tank is so brown and cloudy right now, and I added the new water. Should I be fine? I am going to add the betta once everything seems to clear up abit. Thanks in advance. The fish tank is so foggy. o.o
moreResolved Question: PH won't increase above 6.2ish in my freshwater community aquarium?
I have a 37 gallon freshwater community aquarium (w/ live plants) and I just can't seem to increase the PH level above around 6.2. I've used several different test kits all with the same reading. I've used several types of 7.0 ph balancers. I've also bought PH increaser liquids...they never change the reading. I have african cichlids among a couple other types of fish, so ideally I would like the tank to be around 7.0-7.5. They fish seem happy and with no signs of stress but i would still like to bump it up a bit. There doesn't seem to be any obvious probelms...amonia readings are low and water is crystal clear. Any suggestions?Just wanted to add...never had a problem stablizing the ph to 7.0 in my old 20 gallon community tank, although that was with artifical plants. This is my first live plant tank so maybe that has something to do with it???
moreResolved Question: Turquoise film in my Freshwater Aquarium?
Something strange has happened to my tank, literally, over night. For weeks and weeks my tanks has been A-OK, I've been watching and checking it and vacuuming/cleaning regularly, watching feedings and nitrate levels, everything by the book. This morning I woke up and my tank is a complete 180 from yesterday - There is this weird, bright neon turquoise / teal splotchy film coating the glass, some of the rocks and the decor in the tank. 3 of my fish were dead, a 4th on it's last leg, it'll probably be dead in the hour, and my plants shed about half their leaves, and the rest that were still in tact to the stalk were basically sludge, and my filter that I had just recently changed was completely overtaken with muck. It has a growth pattern that looks like mold, not a typical algae pattern. It is not cyanobacteria, I've had that plenty times in my tank and it looks completely different - it is a, literal, NEON coloured turquoise, it looks like I painted the tank with some kind of glow-in-the-dark rave paint. And the water itself is still crystal clear - it's only on the surfaces of objects and the glass. Everything was completely fine last night when I check the tank before bed, and this is how it was when I woke this morning to check it again.........I've searched, and searched and searched, I can not find ANY info on turquoise algae or fungus in aquariums, and other people have told me it's Blue-Green algae......but it is not, they have not seen it, I am familiar with that - it is absolutely not Cyna. I have never seen anything like this before. What is it?? What do I do ?? Can I clean it, or do I need to chunk the entire tank, clean, and start over from scratch? Is this some type of fungus or disease I need to eradicate or can I simply medicate/clean and continue on?? I am totally lost here. It was a 10 gal tetra tank with a an orange glow fish, 3 serpae tetras, and 3 black neons.
2 of the black neons died, and one of the Serpaes. The last black neon is the one that's about to die any second. The other Serpaes look a bit pale, and not as active, but otherwise relatively ok.
The glow fish is acting completely normal, happy and healthy.
moreResolved Question: New salt aquarium water is cloudy! Help?
Hello,
I have a 55 gal tank that has been running for two days.. And it is milky cloudy!
I did rinse the sand in freshwater prior to adding it in the tank, and before I added the salt water. I have 15 pounds of live rock in there, and 20 pounds of live sand. When I added the water, I used a pump, and I tried using the bowl method, but the current was too strong. The water got very cloudy, but I decided to let it settle overnight. The next day water was clear! But when I turned on filter equipment and powerheads, the water got cloudy again almost immediately.. Is this normal? Should I turn-off the equipment?
Your help is much appreciated!
moreResolved Question: Why is this kitten shaking?
Informed answers only please! Please don't answer unless you know of a particular condition. "Take him to the Vet" is unacceptable.
I take in orphaned kittens and bottle feed them....usually without any problems I can't handle, but I picked up one recently who's shaking like a leaf! He is about 7-10 days old, barely has his eyes open and was found in someones trash can. I thought he was cold, but he does this in a warm towel, IN a small tall aquarium, over a heating pad which keeps his little quarantine tank at 82 degrees. He had dermatitis over 1/2 of his body so I've been giving him .2cc of clavamox twice daily (which after 4 days is now clearing up the skin) so any fever he may have had to begin with is now passed. He's urinating & defecating like a normal kitten, eating normally, but STILL shaking all over. He's not unhappy, he even purrs while he's shaking sometimes. The only time this stops is when he sleeps. I'm feeding a home made formula of: 1 can evaporated milk, 1 can water, 4 tablespoons Just Born Dry Kitten milk (for the colostrum), 1 tsp canola oil, 1 tsp corn syrup, 6 drops liquid pet vitamins, 6 drops Children's Mylecon (to help with gas), and 1 egg yoke. I shake all this up and use between all the bottle feeding kittens for 1 day.---Never had a problem with it.
What could be wrong with this kitten?

moreResolved Question: My work restrictions after injury and surgery?
Reader's Digest version:
I am 22 years old. I fell in March and broke my right ankle. Doctor didn't think I needed surgery but a month later said "Things are looking worse. You need to have your bone screwed together to allow both ends to heal" (basically so they would fuse together again). So they put in plates and screws 5 weeks after I'd broken it. Spent two weeks recovering from surgery. Went back to work in a cast. Normally everybody at work stands (I work at an aquarium) so they decided as long as I was on crutches, I could get a chair at sit at the entrance. Now another month and a half after getting out of the cast I had healed enough from physical therapy to walk without a crutch or cane. My doctors still said "Go easy. Don't stand for long periods." I told my bosses I still needed the chair while at the entrance to sit and rest if ned be, but I'd stand as much as possible and pace if need be. A while back this guy started assigning these shifts to be where I walk around nearby passing out discount coupons and the like. Not so bad to keep walking vs. standing so long as I got breaks. I got scheduled running a small ride and I said "I'm sitting on that old stepladder when its slow" and seemed to get no arguments.
Now I'm back at entrance again twice this week. I've been walking for a while but haven't gotten the 'All clear' from my doc and its rough to stand long periods. Cause its not just the plate and the soreness, its the muscles that shrunk and died when I didn't walk, and I think they cut through a few during my surgery as well.
I got an 'Excelling' performance review from the manager 3 weeks ago, where he said that despite being stuck in one place for 3 months, I became the best entry person they've got.
The long and short of all this is, if I get crap still for wanting to have a chair at the entry (when nobody else gets one) do you think I'm still legit on this. My say is 'I can walk fine, but don't ask me to stand for 7 hours in a row with only a couple quick breaks. I'm going to have to sit while working for brief periods.'
moreResolved Question: Why is my water so, so cloudy..?
I have been plagued with brown, dirty cloudy water for a long time. My aquarium has never been clear enough to see in high definition. Its like cheap cable.
I have a 55 gallon(long) brackish aquarium with sand substrate, some live plants, and two filters(one of which is a piece of doody). I have 7 mollies and two violet gobies. I do 20/30% water changes every one to two weeks. I feed once in the morning, spotty in the afternoon then before i go to bed.
I know I might not be maintaining everything 100% but the water shouldn't be this cloudy I dont think!
Please help!
moreVoting Question: Is it o.k. to have this BGK in this tank (Black Ghost Knife Fish)?
I really love the BGK and my dad had 2 when i was young in a community tank and aggressive to semi-aggressive tank, and both did well. (it was a 55 u.s. gal) I plan on buying a not-so-much 'baby' BGK, but more so smaller one (small for now at least, as i know they can get large) that the private owned strict (Strict as in intense care extremely well-maintained tanks, setups, etc.) fish store i go to is selling. I was just wondering if for its size now it would be OK to have it in a well maintained 40 gal. until he grows excessively? (after that its to the 55 for him. still needs to be set up but there's still much time before that comes into play) I know all their needs, care, etc.But was also wondering if while being well fed on a regular basis in the 40 gal and being a timid-to-other fish even in a larger 40 gal with a lot of room; would be alright to have 1 dojo loach, 1 clown loach, 1 med-small, yet hold-her-ground angel, 1 shark cat, 1 khuli that hides under lava rock all day, 2 giant danio's, 2 Buenos Aires tetra, and 1 poor neon. (The shark ate the other 2). Yes most likely all you fish hobbyist are saying this is over stocked, but if you saw it you would even say it still is very open in there. And yes also there are caves, and a clear "Ghost Viewing" tube ready. ( the tube that is, the caves are beautifully placed hiding areas that appear as natural can be. Just please no put downs or hating, if you really saw it you would understand. I just need to know if the tank is substantial enough for a while until his growth really picks up. And also if the mixture of fish would be alright. I know a lot of successful aquarium hobbyists (including my dad) who have had these fish with BGK in similar conditions and had no problems, but then some who would whip you if you even asked if a BGK would be alright with a assorted species of 'community/assort. tropicals'. Oh yea and it is nicely and moderately planted for the BGK. Not to little, not to much.
moreResolved Question: Why is my small aquarium making so many bubbles from it's undergravel filter? Help!!?
I have a Petco 2 gallon hexagon mini aquarium. I have an undergravel filter and a small air pump that came with the aquarium and 3 guppies inside it that have been living there for almost 2 days now. There are a lot of bubbles coming from the undergravel filter (which i think is normal), but they don't pop for a while and it gets to the point eventually where the entire surface is covered in a layer of bubbles. I don't think that this is good for the fish as they are frequently swimming around at the top at the surface. However, wherever there are bubbles at the surface, they won't swim there. Is this a big problem for the fish, or does it not matter? I can't be with the fish tank 24/7 to clear the bubbles off the surface, so if it is a problem i've got to know why it's happening and how to fix it. I've looked all over online, and can't find situations similar to mine that have happened. Please help!
moreResolved Question: Fresh water aquarium cycling issue!?
I appreciate that there have already been a raft of related questions regarding this but i don't feel my particular question has been covered. However apologies in advance.
Tank cycling : I set up a new cold freshwater aquarium about 6 weeks ago now and have made every effort to do things correctly, researching as much as I can beforehand and during the set-up (even though it can be difficult with so much conflicting advise!)
I have a 90ltr Nano with a built in back filter box which I have a selection of filtration media, pump sucking in water and a powerhead pumping it back out.
I let the tank cycle for around 2 weeks and to be honest with a little impatience added one 1.5 inch fancy goldfish even though I knew the water quality test results we a less than desirable, however they weren't so bad as to cause too much alarm. One week later I added two Blackmoors and a week after that another small fancy goldfish.
I have been monitoring regularly and have been doing 25-30% water changes every week (I add Nutrafin AquaPlus and Nutrafin Cycle each time and will actually be switching to RO water this week). Sometimes with one or even two 10% water changes in between. However, the results I have been recording have not been in tune with what I believe to be the 'typical' cycling levels.
PH has been steady at circa 8.2 (is this a little high?). Nitrate recently spiked at about 1ppm but has now gone back to 0ppm. Nitrate, after been 0ppm for the first two weeks gradually moved through 10ppm to 20ppm and has remained there. Ammonia is the real issue. Since day one until now it's been at 4ppm (sometimes verging on 8ppm) irrespective of anything I do. This profile just makes no sense! :-(
i can't believe that a 30% water change would not show any change in ammonia readings.
I even added a second filter/pump (Fluval U1) inside the tank to bolster up the main filter (not a bio-filter).
Please help! Am I wrong in my thinking? It's been 6 weeks now and the tank just doesn't seem to be cycling? Am I just being too impatient?
Importantly all four fish seem to be very happy in their environment thus far - especially playing with the air stone and swimming (purposely!) into the powerhead flow stream :-) They are fed small pinches of flakes twice daily and they clear the lot within 2 minutes. No food waste is left in the tank that obvious to see.
Many thanks in advanceThanks for the responses peeps but I'm not sure I agree with a couple of things and just wanted to clarify some more.
The Nano tank doesn't have a built in filter as such. It's just a segregated section of the tank which allows you to add your own filtration media. A pump sucks water from the tank and pushes it out of a flute at the top onto the first media, then down into the next and the next etc then finally pushed back out into the tank via another pump/powerhead. I have 3 layers of synthetic wool (diff. grades), then two bags of ceramic tubes then activated carbon gravel and dead rock at the bottom. So I wouldn't consider this to be a poor built-in filter if you know what I mean (I may still be wrong!). As for number of fish, I am just following a typically given rule of 1 inch per gallon. I have circa 5 inches of fish in a circa 23 US (20UK) gallon tank so am not sure why my four fish is too many?? I can pretty much agree with all other :-) Thanks for the RO water advice!
moreResolved Question: New freshwater aquarium cloudiness...tips to crystal clear water?
I just started a 37 gallon freshwater aquarium about a week ago and the water is pretty cloudy. I already transfered my cichlids over, which in retrospect was too fast, but they were just getting too big for their 20 gallon and I got anxious. Thye seem to be fine and are playing and eating like normal. I know this isn't exactly unusual, just looking for any tips to get that crystal clear water as soon as possible. I used stress zyme to get some bacteria in there, used the water clairty stuff (not working at all), have been doing water changes reguarly. I am also running two filters...my Aquaclear and the Top Fin that came with the tank so filtration isn't a problem. Any tips to move the process along...how often should I be doing partial water changes and how much?

I wanted to get a lobster and a crab and have them as pets at the bottom of my tank so I got regular sand as a bedding for them to emulate the ocean floor, oh great now my tank is brown like the ocean, what do I do to clear it up so I can see the fish I get later in the future? The sand caused the whole tank to turn brown, just like the ocean is, but I want to be able to see my fish crab and lobster? And dont worry about them killing each other in the tank when they die I'll just eat them

I am currently cycling a 10 gallon heated and filtered aquarium with 2 platies. It has only been cycling for 2 days. The other fish i plan to get are 1 dwarf gourami, 1 fancy guppy, 2-3 julii corys. Today, the tank water cleared up after a bacterial bloom. I plan to get the fancy guppy next, but dont know when to get it. I am going to petsmart this weekend and was wondering if i could get the guppy then. Is it hardy enough to withstand the cycle? Is 2 platies and 1 guppy too many fish to cycle a tank? If not, when should i get it? any advice is appreciated.
moreResolved Question: New aquarium very murky...what to do?
Today I got a 37 gallon tank (for freshwater use) and added about 40 lbs of Florite Red substrate. The bag said it was already pre-rinsed but just to be sure I wet it down a bit more. I did notice while wetting it down it was very muddy. I poured the stuff in my tank filled it up and my tank is VERY murky. Can barely see even an inch into the tank. What's my best bet...just let the filter do its job and do regular water changes until it clears up or should I do a complete overhaul empty all the water and really thourghly wash the gravel down? It's a 37 gallon so it is quite time consuming to completely empty it plus I planted a couple plants in there as well and really don't wanna have to do all the work again if it's not necessary. Any suggestions?
moreResolved Question: which aquarium filter is better, under gravel filters or the standard hanging filters?
i have several fish tanks and am having constant trouble with water clairity. i do weekly 10% water changes (i tried once a month 25% like the pet store advised but it wasnt helping). and i change the filter every two weeks. ive tried the chemicals but its still cant keep it clear. meanwhile my friend has a 55 gallon that they have never once changed the water, they just add water when it gets low. but theyre tank is CRYSTAL clear, ive never seen one so clear. The only difference is that they use both a hanging AND and undergravel filter. Ive read many negative AND positive things about UG filters and i was wondering which one is better and or if i should use both? The filter is rated for 55g tanks and mine is only a 44g
i only feed twice a day, just as much as they eat in 3 mins, any more gets scooped out.
the filter media is those blue sponges filled with carbon flakes. they are pretty much the standard for basic filters.
moreResolved Question: which hamster cage for 2 ROBOROVSKI HAMSTERS?
hey, recently i got a pair of robos, to go with my 2 syrians, and i thought that i would get them a "proper" cage for my birthday. well, they are in a large plastic box - they are very happy btw. well ventilated aswell. so i thought...a fishtank...or a proper hamster cage. some pics.
Hagen LivingWorld Small Pet Home Exercise Dome (THE HAMSTER CAGE)
Pros - Very big, similar size to rat cage (my syrians are in one each), looks very nice, not tacky, and comes with accessories, and they can climb the bars. but idunno if they're climbers. maybe more "diggers"...
cons - not sure about wooden floors - may have to give layer or two of non toxic clear paint, so they dont pee straight onto the wood and it would be easier to clean. they are not chewers. they are escape artists lol :L so am worried about bars. it says "suitable for adult dwarf hamsters"...well for a start robos are the smallest of hamsters. secondly they are not the first pair of robos im gonna get in my life. and its not as sturdy and good as a rat cage, yet same price!, price is ridiculous. £50. but if its better for the hamsters...
and of course, a pic of it...
http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/rodents/cages/hamster_mouse_cages/hamster_cages/40877#more
Fish Tank (the one i'd buy if i got one)
pros - very easy to see and take photos of them - considering they're robos and i will not be handling them nearly as much as my syrians, easy to clean, impossible to escape out of. i can pile up woodshavings so they can dig and burrow. they love doing that. saves me getting a "digging tower" (by trixie if u dunno what it is)
cons - cannot climb bars - but i dunno if they actually like it, since they've been in a glass tank in pets at home, then bought home and put in a plastic box. hmm... ..... and not as big as the hamster cage. expensive for a fish tank. £33!!! not including the mesh lid which i'll have to buy to keep them in it.... and is heavy. no handles to carry. and more difficult to clean out as is heavy. with the hamster cage the whole like cage lifts up so you just empty the base.
oh, some pics -
http://www.petsathome.com/shop/aquarium-by-clearseal-(available-in-store-only)-36345
if you go on the size select thing its the second one in the list, i think it says 30x15x12. big enough. and i dont wanna go any bigger because its longer - and i've no room at all for any longer!!
So... i'm stuck. i've pros and cons for both!! and yes, i have considered a gerbil cage but bars of gerbil cage way too big for robos and they'd escape. plus gerbil cage even heavier, and i've run out of room lol - 3 cages!!!
please dont say "fish tank" becuz its cheaper, or "hamster cage" cus it says the word "hamster" on it therefore its suitable, and a fishtank is not suitable because its not ddesigned for hamsters, its designed for fish, cus thats not true. and give reasons for your answer :) thanks
oh - an idea of what the finished fish tank would look like... and its the fish tank i would get if i got a fish tank lol...
this.

cool, huh? and yeah, i'm not gonna get that wooden top. they sell mesh ones too :)ok - i haven't made myself clear enough - i have no rats. lol. i have 2 syrian hamsters, they are in a rat cage EACH lol, they've hardly even met XD the 2 robos arre going in the cage :)
moreResolved Question: I think my gourami has a deep ulcer. Will this work?
My fish started out with a small brown discoloration near the base of his fin. I treated him with a bit of aquarium salt. Unfortunately, it has gotten worse since then and now upon closer inspection, I noticed the discoloration has turned into a deep hole in the fish! I have an old fish first aid kit. A couple of things that I think might be helpful are aquarium pharmaceuticals fungus cure for bacteria and fungus, and quick cure which is typically used for ick. I read that for koi fish with ulcers, salt and malachite green (ingredient in quick cure) is a good treatment. My questions are, do you think this is an ulcer and do you think the koi treatment will work with my gourami? I've kept fish for a long time, but I have never seen anything as vicious as this. I don't have much money right now and would like to get him treated right away. What do you think is the best medication I have for my fish? I also have coppersafe and ick clear. The fish acts fine by the way, though the deep brown hole looks horrible. None of the other fish seem to have any problems. Also, a couple of months ago this same fish had what appeared to be dropsy, but survived with use of aquarium salt. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

moreResolved Question: Air pump for my Aquarium?
So my tank had 3 live plants, Amazon Sword, Argentine Sword, and Water Wisteria. Added a week ago. The tank currently had 1 Betta, adding 4-6 Panda Corys at the end of the month.
Thank is 10 Gallon, heater at 80 deg. , Aqua Clear 20 Filter. Now there is "some" water movement, but not much from filter (My Betta Turbo hates the current). But I want to know if at night there will be enough oxygen for the fish, since at night the Plants stop taking in CO2, and take in Oxygen.
Should I get an Air pump for Night, and create some more oxygen in the tank?
Also will a Gang filter help lower the flow of the air pump? Do I need to use more than 1 air stone for a gang valve, even if there are more spaces to have more?
moreResolved Question: Help with foggy / hazy aquarium glass?
I bought a tank off someone and just the front and back have this weird fog up to where the water line was, the sides are perfectly clear. I tried soaking with vinegar, razor blades, even using rubbing compound. Nothing works. I got desperate and used CLR and not even that is helping. The person who had it before didn't have it near a window and I believe they were using aquarium salt but nothing else. Is there any other way to clean it off? What could have caused just two sides of glass to look so frosted?
moreVoting Question: protein skimmer questions?
I have currently been running a skilter filter on my 26 gallon Bow front saltwater aquarium. I recently (tonight) just added an Instant ocean sea clone 100. I have read reviews about people not liking this unit, no getting any foam ect ect. My questions is i am getting a lot of foam, adjusted the air valve as directions stated, but it is putting a lot of air bubbles into my aquarium? Is this because my aquarium is dirty or do i have to much airflow. I adjusted it to where there is no air bubble in the line. i am already collecting the dirty yellow water in the cup.
Any ideas why there is a lot of air bubbles being pushed back into the aquarium? Will this clear up?

moreResolved Question: When to add fish to a new aquarium?
I have had my aquarium set up for three days now (120L). After initial cloudiness it has settled down well and the water is now pretty much crystal clear and it has been cholrine and chloramine treated. The staff at Pets at home said to bring a sample of water down to be tested and i should be ok to add a few fish after three days, but looking around on the net different sources say between a week and up to four weeks. Anybody had any experience of adding fish to new aquariums and can advise me when to do it?

moreResolved Question: How far down the aquarium should an extension tube reach?
I have a 20 Gallon tank and have been battling cloudy water for the last 2 1/2 months. I've started doing weekly 25% water changes and unfortunately just realized that I should be adding cycle. This morning I did a 50% water change and added some cycle. When I bought my filter in May (Aqua Clear 30 - used to be the Aqua Clear 150) i noticed it had an extra extension tube. I figured it was probably just a spare in case the other one broke or something, so I left it in the box. I just added it to my filter and now the extension tube reaches about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down the tank. Is this acceptable or does it need to almost reach the gravel? I figure this may be a pretty big reason my tank is cloudy because it's just cleaning the same water over and over.
Thanks!

moreVoting Question: I need help with my new fish tank! asap!?
Ok, so last night I set up my new 15gal aquarium. The substrate is mostly sand and a little bit of rock, I put in the filter, the heater, the bubbler, a few live plants and a few fake ones and the decorations. I added the water purifier the sales lady recommended and decided that I would let it filter for a few days before I added any fish. When I got home from work today I noticed that the tank looks dirty, the water is crystal clear but EVERYTHING in the tank has some weird white-ish -clear-ish stuff that kinda looks like dirt or spider web. What do I do for this and what has caused it? How long will I have to wait to put fish in and will I have to drain it and start over? I'm kinda new to this whole large fresh water aquarium thing, I'm used to a Betta in a 2gal tank. Please help me idk what to do!

I just got a betta fish (Siamese Fighting Fish.) Is it okay to leave it in the case it came in? The case it comes in is a small plastic clear cup, and when the betta fish lies straight it exactly the length of the bowl. The person at the store says Flash will be fine in there, he'll live for at least four years, but I've heard the larger your tank is the happier he'll be. Also I think I need an aquarium heater and plants. We just put my old fish in a bowl and fed him and cleaned his bowl once a week, and he lived long. But I'm not sure to do this with my new fish--any tips?

I have two fish in my tank that i think are pregnant.
They must have gotten pregnant before i bought them, because i've only had them a few weeks. (1-2)
They are a Dalmatian Molly and a Sunburst Platy.
They are really fat, and i the Platy's stomach is getting lighter in color and seems to be black inside. (maybe it's a shadow?)
My Molly is sort of square-stomached.
JUST NOW, the each had a clear/white long thing (looked like string) come out of their butts (or at least what i think is their butts..)
Could that just be CLEAR poop, or a sign they are about to give birth?
I have a breeder tank suctioned to the side of my 55g aquarium.
When should i put them in it, if they're even pregnant to begin with?
PS. I do not know at all how far along they may be.

moreResolved Question: should i start my aquarium over?
I have had my aquarium for a little over 2 1/2 months the water would seem to get a little dirty and i would change the filters and it would clear right up. Now for the past 2 weeks the water has got real dirty i have tried changing the filters, changing the water and chemicals and nothing seems to be working and my fish are starting to die!. The water is cloudy, but not "white" or "green" from algae, its like its just dirty with a hint of green color to it and it kinda smells. My tank is freshwater 55 gallon, i have a gravel bottom , 1 air stone (bar), a 2 compartment filter. no plant life. I was thinking about starting over pulling the fish out and keeping them separate until i got the water back to normal quality, but if there is something wrong with the fish that is causing the water to look like that, when i put them back in will they infect the water again? Can you please help!
moreResolved Question: How much would you pay for this setup?
So I want to either upgrade to a larger tank for fish or upgrade to a larger tank for some kind of reptile. Either way it doesn't look like my ten gallon is going to work out. I can't just leave it lying around, a couple months in the future I'm going to be trying to fit something else in that thing. So I think I'm going to sell it. So here is what I have:
Tank
It's ten gallons. The dimensions are 20 1/2"L, 10 1/2"W, 12 1/2"H.
This is the oldest product, but it's strong. If my time line is correct it's about 16 to 17 years old. It's been used to house turtles, fish, frogs, rats, lizards, and hamsters. Not exactly in that order and sometimes more than once in my lifetime. The sealant is still good. It's visible at the bottom which can be a little ugly but it can be hidden with a little gravel or sand. I have it filled and running at this very moment and it's been like that for two months so it doesn't have any leaks. There is a screen lid but it doesn't lock and it has several small punctures. I probably wouldn't sell it with the tank for that reason.
The Equipment:
(Everything is about 1-2 months old, but not any older.)
10 Gallon Aqueon Power Filter With Two Refills
This product is only a month or two old and the filter pad has been changed twice. The second change was with no fish in the tank. I have it running currently because I was going to cycle it and add fish but changed my mind. Plus the sound of the waterfall is soothing.
Top Fin Air Pump 1000
Once again it's running for cycling and sound.
Top Fin Airline Tubing
It's the clear one, 8 Ft. of it. I also have extra tubing that I cut in half of the same type. One of the halves is dyed a little blue.
Top Fin Airline Holders
I still have all six.
Top Fin 4" Air Stone
Actually I have two. I switch them every month.
Hydor Mini Heater 5-10 Gallon
What sucks is it isn't adjustable. It's one setting is 75 degrees. But it is submersible which I find makes for a cleaner appearance in the tank. It's open and in the tank but I haven't had to turn it on once. I live in California and I bought it just before summer. And with no air conditioning in my room just the air in the room keeps the tank at a steady 75.
Top Fin Aquarium Thermometer Strip Small
It's stuck on the side of the tank, in the middle, on the opposite side of where I have the filter and heater.
The Decorations:
Top Fin Hygrophilia Plastic Plants 8" & 12"
Top Fin Ludwigia Plastic Plants 8" & 12"
Top Fin Anarcharis Plastic Plants 12"
Top Fin Roman Posts
Top Fin Aquarium Gravel 10Lb. Rainbow And/Or Black
I could sell both, but I'd prefer just to sell the rainbow gravel. If I get the large fish tank I'm going to have black gravel so keeping the black gravel I already have would be great.
Top Fin Gravel Vacuum Either Small Or Large
I can't remember the size. It's been used once. I guess I could throw it in since if I got a larger tank I believe I'd need a larger vacuum.
Tank Background
I'm not sure if it has a brand. I just got it from PetSmart. It's black and depicts some bright green plants and a log. It's quite pretty in my opinion.
Extra:
Top Fin Water Conditioner 2 Fl Oz.
It is about half empty so it's more like 1 fluid ounce, but that's more than enough to treat the entire ten gallon tank.
Top Fin Bacteria Supplement 2 Fl. Oz.
Once again this has been used. There's about 1/4 to 1/3 missing, but what's left is again more than enough.
That's about it. I'd probably sell it as a package, but I could sell some parts separately I guess. But what's the worth of it all?
moreVoting Question: How do I know if my fish is dying? Or if he's sick? What can I do about it?
I have a comet goldfish, who've I've had for about a year and a half. He's kept it a Baby BiOrb tank with gravel and a constant bubble filter system. I feed him twice a day, about 4-5 flakes each time. I change his water at least once every three weeks.
Recently, there was an outbreak of brown algae in his tank, so I got AlgaeFix from a local aquarium and in a few days, about 80% of the algae was gone. Around this time, I noticed that his behavior was a bit different. He wasn't as active as he usually is, and he wouldn't come up to the glass when I put my finger up to it (which he normally does). He didn't swim as much, and kinda just floated in the water, but not on his side or anything like that.
I decided to change his water, clean his tank, etc etc. I cleaned out all the algae, which for some reason was green now, and did my normal routine for the tank business.
It's been about, 2-3 days later. I walk out to check on him, and he's floating on his side about half way in the water. I FREAK out, and I tap on the tank, and he swims *straight up* to the surface, than darts back down to the bottom of his tank where he just sits in the gravel. He's breathing fine, and his eyes seem clear. But he's not swimming, and he's at just at the bottom of the tank. He doesn't react to me, or anything in the water. Every now and then, he'll spastically dart about the tank, then settle back on the bottom.
I'm really worried. Is he sick? Are these his final days? Is there anything I can do? I'm really desperate to keep him alive! He's about 2.5" long, I'd say. He's in a 4 gallon tank too.
moreResolved Question: Aquarium water Acidic?
Hey all,
I've had a stable fish tank for a couple of years now. Consistantly, the water has been hard, and has been very alkaline (7.4 range). However, recently, I noted that my fishes fins were looking a bit ragged and bloodshot. I ran the pH recently, it's it's gone totally acidic on me (6.0). So far, I've added some buffer, and did a 30% water change, hoping that the hardness of my tap water would help to balance it out, but so far it hasn't moved much more than to the 6.4 range (this is the third or fourth day of trying to fix it).
As for the tank, it's 30gal, and contains goldfish and some guppies- which I've had about 3 years now. There is a large hood based filter running right now (filter is made for a 40 gal tank), and I don't typically add a lot of chemicals or anything to the water. Within the past few months, my fish did have a problem with some fungal whatnot, which I cleared up with some tablets. And now, I'm having issues with this. Any ideas?

moreResolved Question: Nitrites in aquarium!?!?!?!? HELP?
I have a tank that i think is done cycling, it's been set up for 3 weeks; I had an ammonia spike (8.0) a nitrite spike (5.0) and now my nitrates are at 20-30, but when i do water test I have the liquid tests and my ammonia is clearly 0 my nitrates are clearly between 20-30 (which have not gone down because i have yet to do my first water change, i wont do it until my tank is cycled tho, and i.d.k if it is) My nitrite on the other hand, looks like there is a little in there. My fish are showing no stress and the liquid test has a light blue for zero and .25 is clearly purple, the .5 is darker, then on until it hits 5.0 which is almost black. But when the test is done it's between 0 and .25 but the color is nowhere near purple, it looks like a mix or lilac and sky blue, but it's clearly NOT purple which is .25 ppm (NOT 2.5) it's .25 (point two-five) just making myself clear lol :) ...
does this mean I'm done?
is it at zero? it's not bright blue like the chart, it's like medium blue (but NOT PURPLE)
I have nitrates so I'm assuming my tank is done, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I don't want to do a H2O change until it's done cycling because that slows the process and it's been 3 weeks.
so is the test wrong or is the color not suppose to be very light blue. I did a test on my water and the nitrite were light blue just ike the chart, but it's not like that in my tank water. is this normal?
do i have nitrites?
if i do have nitrites, is it enough to kill my fish?
I know nitrites are VERY BAD but if they're between 0 and .25 I think .1 because it's not even purple, just darker blue. Will that be enough to do MAJOR harm.
My cardinal tetras are doing fine with no sign of stress, but I'd rather be safe than sorry .
Help me out please!
THANK YOU :)
BTW I have livebearer fish, it's a 56G tank, I'm not overstocked and my temp it at 82 and i have 3 10" air stones and, ummm, that's about it.
(^_^)thanks Billy T! I know weekly water changes are a must, and I TOTALLY will do them, I just read that I'm not suppose to do them while im in nitrite spikes because that sets you back to day one, But don't worry, I will do weekly water changes without a doubt ! :)
THank you for the answer (^_^)
