Resolved Question: why in the hell are my fish dying?

Ok so i have a 7 gallon tank a bit over stocked but i don't think this is something crucial to why this is occurring. I have the following: 4 albino long finned zebra, 1 normal zebra, 1 red halfmoon betta, 1 dwarf gourami, and the hell of a lot of trumpet snails. Now about the betta and gourami i am just very fortunate they did not fight. Ok So my aqaurium was custom made and so was the hood. I made sure there will be no possible way for them to jump out yet a few minutes ago i found a zebra in the floor, i put it back and i am hoping it will live. As for the other zebras they are terrified for some reason. they refuse to come out. Yesterday i noticed the gourami was chasing them, does this have anything to do. And my aquarium was cleaned yesterday (as usual) i took about 2 gallons of water and replaced them with water just perfect for them. So this does not have nothing to do, i hope. Also about 4 hours ago they were drilling a hole outside where they were. It was REALLY loud. Does anything here sound like something that affected them? I turned off the lights of the hood so they can calm down a bit. What should i do? Please help...there are 5 zebras, and they have schooled together ever since the first day (10 months ago)fishlady: why is that?fishlady: why is that?governme: I hate to disagree with you, but bettas are only aggresice toward there own species, and gouramis which is why i said i was lucky. Now i did not have any sick fish, water is perfect, there are no saltwater fish, as you should have notices i listed the fish i had. I believe there are many snails but as i asked why is it they play a pivotal role in this situation? more

Resolved Question: Is my female Syrian Hamster Pregnant? If so, Am I taking the right procedures to prepare for a litter?

I have 1 male hamster that is a whole bunch of different shades of brown, I also have 1 blonde male hamster, and 1 blonde female hamster; these 3 hamsters(2 males & 1 female) are siblings, but im suspecting that the female may be pregnant. Her belly has grown as far as I can tell, also her nipples are visible, and finally it looks like she has two airbags on the side of her belly(it is hard/firm). But for precautionary reasons I went on and separated her from the 2 males. She is now in a 15 or 20 gallon aquarium tank with a custom made cardboard housing place, water bottle, miniature food bowl, and a hamster wheel. I bought some "Bed Fluff" which is, "100% natural cotton nesting material" for hamsters and other small animals. I already placed some of it in the housing place and she seems to like it! LOlz -Anyways, If anyone can give me an elaborate and good answer to my question, I would greatly appreciate it!! -PLEASE ASSIST ME!! (time is of the essence) more

Resolved Question: Bioshock, aquarium decorations?? Where can I get them?

I had a great idea recently to theme my aquarium around "rapture" inspired by the amazing game, bioshock. One problem, I don't find any sort of resin decorations that are underwater safe! You would think that with a popular game based on a city underwater that there'd be some Big daddy statues for a aquarium but I haven't found anything. So, does anyone know where I can find them or at least get it custom made? I'd like a 6 inch big daddy statue. That'd be so awesome. more

Resolved Question: how much would it cost to build a custom aquarium?

I would like it to be about 200 gallons + and a corner piece, the advantage of this is that it only needs one sheet of glass, the other two sides can be made from something else if that works out cheaper, i already have all the filters and most of the stuff i'd fill it with, just need to work out the cost of the tank itself. oh and possibly the cost of its stand should i make one. i want it mainly for cold water Ghost koi (i have four that are nearly a foot long and am sick of barely being able to see them in the pond, would much rather swap them for goldfish in the pond more

Resolved Question: what are aquarium canopy necessities?

i have a 125 g tank that holds a turtle and a few fish.. i made a custom stand for. now i want to make the canopy for it. i will have doors on the front. and i will be using dome lights which i will put on top so there will be holes cut. besides the cutouts for the chords and filter tube i dont know what else to ad. i was told to make holes for air circulation . then i saw some people with fans. i also saw some tanks with plexiglass on top to block the moisture. are those necessities. if i need a fan do i need to have it on 24/7. (my lights are on a 10/14 rotation) do i cut the plexiglass to fit on top of the tank or do i keep it up high a bit. is it really necessary? let me know what you think and how you would map it out. my uvb basking light will be in 1 corner. pipes and wires in another. regular uva bulb in the middle. lemme hear your thoughts more

Resolved Question: LED Marine / Saltwater Aquarium Light?

I was wondering whether its possible to do a custom made LED light since if u buy from the shop the real deal its around rm2500 for LED lighting 2ft. My aquarium measures 2x1x1ft Is it a must to use Luxeon types of LED ...which is 3W? Or can I put the 5mm LED at 0.2W with many instead to compensate for intensity? Any guide or tips on how i should make it ? E.g. numbers of LED, minimum LED rating.. Thanks! (In Malaysia)Its for corals which need optimum lighting. Not those really intense ones. Resolved Question: How much should a 180+ gallon custom aquarium sell for?

My father made me an AWSOME cumstom aquarium for my Burmese Python & now that the snake has died I have no use for it. It is the most gorgeous beautiful aquarium I have ever seen. Looks like a awsome piece of furniture. It has a rustic wood look, the front & top are slightly tinted glass, the back & mirror & the rest is wood. It is at least 6 1/2 ft long 2 ft wide 2 ft tall, on 3 ft legs Anyway my father is having some really bad financial problems so I was wondering if it'd be worth trying to sell & give him the money.I don't want to let it go, but it's just taking up room & it'd help him out so... Any Ideas what it may be worth? more

Resolved Question: Where can I get solid sheets of plastic?

I'm planning on custom building an aquarium lid for my 10 gallon. Where should I go or who should I ask to find out where to get a flat piece of plastic similar to the plastic regular lids are made out of, maybe a little thicker? more

Voting Question: Need a plastic or rustproof pan for an indoor cage. 28" x 28" know where I can get/make one?

So I made an indoor bunny cage using target storage cubes as I found this in an online guide and thought it was a neat idea to get a custom sized cage. Problem is that even with the animal being litter trained I didn't realize that he'd leave quite so many pellets everywhere in his enclosure and in general he likes to throw hay around and leave a mess daily. Are there any companies or websites that will built a custom sized pan or even an aquarium style bottom (basically anything solid with sides on it I can slide in but won't hurt the rabbit's feet)? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What is the best (price/aesthetics) saltwater kit for 2 clownfish & an anemone? HC Glass if possible...?

I'd like a kit-like saltwater tank to start with two clownfish and an anemone, and have been looking at several different ones online. The reason I'd like the kit is due to the need for many different components in the saltwater tank (because I'm new to this aquarium setup from freshwater) and would like to buy the whole setup (minus a few parts, which if necessary, is fine & expected...I just have no desire to start with a big glass rectangle from petco & build it all myself right now) so that it's functional and aesthetically pleasing. My goal is 25+ gallons HC glass (the super-clear glass) I love the aquascapes I've seen and would like a bit of wiggle room with less fish and more rock/live plants I've looked at http://www.drsfostersmith.com and really love the HC eco-cube manufactured by them... it's at: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3730+18993&pcatid=18993 I'll gladly award the "best answer" ASAP to whoever submits the response with the following info: -WHICH TANK? Which is the best tank like the HC Ecocube, or something like it (i.e a shopping list of parts with the best place to order a stock/custom HC glass rimless 30+ gallon tank made with the beautiful HC glass), Nano cube, or if there's a Marineland-compatible tank make of the same glass? My local pet store owner (non-chain) owner has offered to order me a nano cube at (close to cost)...should I take up that offer...what price to expect at "clost to at cost"? PRICE & PLACE? Feel free to promo your site and/or business here :o) -Where can I purchase the tank as a kit at the best price and what are my options if not a kit? I realize bigger is better, safer, and cheaper with saltwater tanks; however, I have to make this work with my partner, who I fear, may kill me if it is over 50 gallons ;o) Hence, the small footprint of the cube-shaped aquariums are ideal! The mini-environment has to work within my environment too :o) Thanks so much for your help in advance!!! more

Resolved Question: How to set up a tank with live plants?

So I've been into aquariums for about 10 - 15 years all together. Had tropical fish tanks and cold water fish tanks, but I never tried to grow live plants in my tanks, don't know why... Now I want to try. So now I have a tank which is a custom made and I think it's about 70 or 80 gallon, it's not set up yet. I want make it a fresh water tropical tank and hopefully with live plants instead of fake ones. I know how to do all the set up what I need for filtration and all that fun stuff, but how do I plant live plants properly? I know I need to get a special light for plants and nutrients, but do I plant them when I set up or do I wait until my tank is cycled and all water levels are all on the right places? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Reptile owners please answer this one!!!?

My husband owns 3 snakes. A columbian red-tailed boa, a red rat snake, and an eastern milk snake. They each have their own terrarium in the basement. The columbian boa is in a custom made oak showcasing. About a month ago our house was infested with fleas. Majority of the house was treated except the basement because of the snakes. They wanted us to remove the cages but because of the weight and size, the custom cage was too much of a hassle. Most over-the-counter sprays say to cover fish aquariums but I don't know if it would be safe to put plastic over the top of the snakes' cages for at least a couple of hours or so. My local vet doesn't know anything about reptiles and deals with furry pets only. Pet shops don't know either. Exterminator companies said that they recommend that they be removed from the premises for at least 2 hours, and that they are not responsible if anything should happen. Is it safe to put a layer or two of plastic over the tanks while application is ministered? Only serious answers please!! Killing the snakes is NOT an option! These are my husband's babies. The boa is over 6ft long, about around as a softball and eats jumbo-sized rats with no problem. Most people are scared of snakes this size. My husband handles him alot. We don't know anyone that will take snakes into their home and 99% of people we know think we are crazy to have them to begin with. more

Resolved Question: i want a custom made fish aquarium to be installed in my home.?

I want the width to be about 8ft, Hieght about 8 ft, and length about 30 ft. Basically this aquaruim will be from floor to cieling reaching out about the length of my whole wall. this tank will be about 3,000 gallons, and be built into the wall and cieling/floor to give a built in look. What the question is, i dont know should i hire this proffessional company called "Acrylic tank manufacturers" to do the job or should i hire my cousin? My cousin is a drafter and works for a company skilled in custom furniture. He has made fish aquariums around 200 gallons, but has never attempted a project this large before. Acrylic tank manufacturers will charge me around 50,000. My cousin will charge me around 35,000. What would be the best choice? more

Resolved Question: Can my floor support my aquarium?

I live in a first floor maisonette built in 1904. I'd like to set up a 330 litre aquarium with 60 litre sump. I'm putting it in the corner of my living room. My house adjoins the house next door, between there is a walkway, probably for horses back in the day. so, it is my assumption that this corner of my living room is directly over the top of a load bearing brick wall, but I cant be certain. The weight of the system will be approximately 1200lbs. This is an estimate based on 800lbs of sea water, a heavy 36x24x24inch glass tank which i estimate to weigh 150lbs. To it, I will add 40kg of live rock. There will be a sump made of acrylic which I have not finished designing yet. This will all sit on a relatively light weight custom built cabinet. The weight will be distributed over 36x27 rectangular base of 70x70mm timber. Does this sound doable to you?true about the water beds, but the weight is also distributed over a much wider area. Mine will be distributed on 36 x 27 inch rectangle of 70mm timber with one crossbar. perhaps I should put a slab of 1.8mm mdf on the bottom as well to try and further distribute?not on the ground floor, im on the first floor, in the UK thats the upstairs one :)i do know this isnt the best place for structural advice, but its cheaper than paying someone to come out and look :)thanks axeman... I did the numbers and seriously overestimated the weight of the system to be 1500lbs. Distributed on 36x27inches comes to 6.75 sqare feet, divide them and i get only 222. so it sounds like i'm safe. being over a load bearing wall, i think i have nothing to fear here. thanks! more

I can only assume that the wall beside the walkway is made to support the house above meaning that this aquarium *should* be squarely placed atop that brick wall... if i've measured things right :) more

Resolved Question: How do I get my gerbil to stop digging?

My male gerbil liked to dig in the corner of his cage in the middle of the night, so I changed the cage to an aquarium. Since then it hasn't really been a problem, but now that I have him a custom made cage, and some buddies for him on the way, I put some tubbing so he could get from the 1st to the 2nd floor. I put a plastic wheel in there because his male pups will soon be joining him in about 2 weeks and they can't have an open one due to the dangers of getting their tails and legs caught. The female that we had with him never had that problem, but for some reason he just won't stop scratching the inside of the tubes and the wheel. What can I do to try and teach him not to do that? more
