Resolved Question: Will this plant [Baby tears-Micranthemum umbrosum] survive in my aquarium that have?
40 gallon, white sand base-no substrate beneath, liquid plant fertilizer, DIY CO2 diffuser, required light [don't know the watts] and some fish. the filter and other essentials are there but i guess those doen't have anything to do with this question.
any way my sand is pretty think enough, and as there are no other substrate [i have a driftwood by the way] do i need to add any kind of nutrient rich material to this base. also the co2 diffuser works pretty well and light too, but this substrate thing surely is a trouble, i guess.[ I'll add additional details as per your suggestion in this question.] this plant is ordered online and will reach this week. no other plants [had before] i'm just considering a tank with this single foreground plant that grows very rapidly on proper care. please answer.

moreResolved Question: Typical Question for an aquarium?
How do I stop algae or prevent it?
I have a 60 gallon tank outside. Everyday it gets sunlight, so I cover most of the sides of the tank to block it from getting sunlight. I know that nitrates, overfeeding, and nutrients in the water, and sunlight will contribute to algae. I know that water changes and cleaning the tank will aid in prevention of algae, but I'm wondering what other methods are there in controlling algae? I put in plants, but my fish destroyed them a few days later and I have a DIY mechanical filter to clean up the other side of my tank to rid of the poop, etc...but I'm suspecting that it contributed to the algae... Would a UV serilizer be helpful in my situation? Snails?
Irrelevant to the question but will plecos do well with high fin banded sharks? And is there any aquatic plants that are compatible with goldfish, or with any other fish, that are sold in brand name pet shops? If not, I guess I have to go to my local fish store.Thank you all for your answers. THey have been really helpful. I'm going to wait week before choosing a best answer so I can get a little more info. THANKS AGAIN
moreVoting Question: aquarium plant problems...?
Ever since ive added my new plants, and moved my tank, EVERYTHING seems to be going wrong. Half the plants are dieing, and the others just aren't growing. The tank is a 29 gal, with a 65watt coralife (6700K) and a flora glo 20watt. Making the tank almost 3WPG. The water is set for 78 degrees F, and I have a DIY c02 system setup, which runs into the impellar of a power filter motor. There is also an eheim canister filter, and I use a special flourite gravel.
I dose the tank with flourish (once a week) and iron (once a week).
The plants i'm having problems with are my:
chilensis (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+1626&pcatid=1626)
moneywort (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+809&pcatid=809)
cabomba (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+796&pcatid=796)
Basically, the chilensis is either turning almost a red/brown colour (but not rotting) in the new leaves, and the old leaves are semi rotting at the tips and just dieing off.
The moneywort is just loosing leaves which seem to be rotting off, but any new growth they experience is doing great, with nice colour and everything.
But the cabomba is doing worst of all, because the bottom half was brown when I bought it, and all the bottom leaves have fallen off. But again, any new growth at the top is experiencing good strong growth.
The only thing I can think of is someone suggested im not dosing macro nutrients (NPK) or my c02 is not strong enough. But I only recently set up the c02, and ive had most plants before, but they never died like this. I am only running one 2L bottle for c02, and it produces I would say 1 bubble every 2-5 seconds.
Oh and almost ALL of my plants, except for my anubias, has almost root rot, but there not rotting, just turning brown and not healthy looking.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, ive put all this hard work and money into this tank, and I really just want to know whats wrong.

I'm looking into getting a small aquarium for my sister's betta. Most of the ones in my price range come with under gravel filters, which I know can be very bad. my red-eyed tetra has this white thing on its mouth which started as i have seen before, a little red cut, probably a wound. and now, it looks like it has been infested by some parasite. i don't know exactly if i am dealing with a parasite here but it looks a columnaris to me ( i researched some stuff). More so, my tiger barb has this red tiny swollen thing on its tail but i do not know what it is. I've been keeping them for more than 6 months now but i never dealt such case. i read that adding salt to my freshwater aquarium can help alleviate some fungus/bacterial infection which i actually did and put 4 round tabespoonful in my tank. but afterwhich, suddenly, i just read about this issue of avoiding adding salt in a planted tank. i have some anubias, Hygrophila difformis, Ceratopteris thalictroides and Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis' . My fish poulation is composed of 7 tiger barbs, 5 red-eyed tetras, 1 zebra danio, and 1 swordtail. By the way, my tank is 20 gallons. i just had a 60% water change 2 days ago, and i really don't want to do changing again just to remove or reduce the salt content of my tank since this might stress my fish as the water quality can change drastically. My filter by the way is an undergravel one, and i have a DIY powerhead filter. I also have a DIY CO2 generator and i really want to spare my plants which i had for 2 months now. please, all advices are appreciated. thanks! Oh, and i just used an ordinary, table salt, not the iodized one.Oh no! i just woke up this morning to see that my fish started to breathe in air at the surface and one of my tiger barbs swam with its belly on top! I AM AFRAID i may have a mass fish kill ='(. and when i came back from school just this day, i noticed that the gills of my barbs seem to be dark, as if some blood clot has clogged it. and some even bleed their mouths and i can see some blood droplets suspended in the water! i can only change the water on saturdays since i am on a tight schedule with my classes. i can't change it during the night cause i think this would really stress them out. help!!!!
moreResolved Question: white cloudy aquarium water?
Hello again! Recently I have been having some trouble with white cloudy water in my aquarium. In my first aquarium (10 gal) I had some plastic plants and a couple rocks. I didn’t cycle it properly with all of the water changes and tests so the water became incredibly yellow and cloudy. I decided to start over in a new 15 gal aquarium. It was my fathers when he was a kid and is a solid 33 years old. It was in perfect condition after being neglected in my grandparents basement for the last 20 years! No cracks or anything! Well anyways, the water is getting cloudy in this aquarium too! It has been open for 2.5 months. Currently it is being properly or rather, more properly cycled. Unfortunately, I had to add all eight fish I had in the ten gallon the day after I opened the 15 gal. So now, all of the levels are a tad high. my levels are:
Nitrate- 10.0-20.0ppm
Nitrite- 0.0ppm
PH- 6.4 (went low after a water change, currently working on it)
Ammonia- 0-0.25
I think the fast transfer of all of the fish contributes to the cloudiness. I have 8 fish in the tank. I am under all circumstances overstocked. I have: 2 serpeas, 2 redeyes, 2 mollies, 1 pleco, and 1 kissing gourami. Ok so now on to equiptment. For filtration I am running an aquaclear 150 with two sponge inserts and 1 carbon. I run it 24/7! For oxygen I am running an air pump with and airstone. This is a planted tank with co2. I am running a DIY co2 system until I get my hands on one of those high end pressurized systems. I do have a check valve in the tubing! I ran the co2 directly to the input on my filter. The plants are: an aqua fern, another fern, a grassy plant, an anubia, and another stem plant that I cant remember the name of, all from petsmart. I also have some rocks in the tank which until recently relized are spray painted. They came with the tank originally. Also another note: All of this stuff worked perfectly for the tank when it was originally run in my house! Although we didn’t have any live plants. I decided to use a fluorite substrate both for looks and functionality. It has the worst dust problem though! (any ideas on that?) As for lighting. I have the original, yes, original fluorescent bulb that came with the hood in like the 70’s! Just to make it even better it doesn’t have a wattage label on it! It is fairly bright and the plants aren’t dead so I think I’m good. As for chemicals I use jungle brand start right, stress zyme, and nutrafin plantGRO iron enriched. Well I need two answers;
1)Why is it cloudy?! Overstocked? Just cycling? Give it time?
2)How can I get the cloudiness out?! Water changes? More chemicals? To much chemicals?
Please help and sorry for the novel of info above! If you need any more info please let me know!
Thankyou!the filter is rated for 10-30 gallons so i think its sufficient. Im by no means a fish expert though...the filter is rated for 10-30 gallons so i think its sufficient. Im by no means a fish expert though...

I have a "new" 150 gallon aquarium. I just finished with my DIY trickle filter. I have another well established 75 gallon. I was planning on making it a planted tank. From research I need to establish my tank with plants then a few months later put in my discus. Others have told me to put all my substrate and fish into the new tank. I am confused as to what I need to do. What I want to accomplish is a planted tank. I was going to take my ecocomplete out of my 75g and put it into the 150 along with some more eco complete and silica sand as the topper. Put some mulm from my existing canister into the wet dry filter and let it cycle. Then add the plants to start the plant process. Is this correct? the 75 gallon tank is going to be right next to the 150 as a water storage/q-tank if needed. Please advise.

Hi there. I have recently redone my kitchen and ended up with a huge sink. I was thinking of turning it into a small outdoor fish 'pond' or 'aquarium'. It is around 50cm x 60cm x 40cm. I used an online calculator and found it should hold around 30gallons of liquid.
I am thinking of adding goldfish or koi to the container once it is in place in my garden (btw I am in the UK). I have all of the necessary bacteria supplements, food and other bits and bobs for fishkeeping from a friend who didn't need them anymore.
I just wanted to know the answers to a few questions;

2) What about winter-time care?
3) Any tips for a DIY filter for a small setup like this one?
4) How can I plug the bottom correctly to prevent it leaking (I do have the original sink plug - should I add silicone around it?)

moreResolved Question: Why are my fish going to the bottom of the tank?
I was told by my pet shop guy that i can prevent the lime marks on the glass by using drinking water in the aquarium, but provided they should be kept standing for at least 2 days, and then u can add them in the tank. I filled in a huge drum with the drinking water and added some chlorine removal liquid and left it for a day, during the water change, that huge drum hardly filled half of my tank, i also have an overhead tank wherein the drinking water is collected every two days, so i filled my rest of the tank with that water which is however left to stand since two days (i mean two days old drinking water, made to stand for two days). Everything was fine the fish did really well, but now, i find the parrot fish and the kissing gouramis goin to the bottom corners of the tank and staying there as if they r sleeping, the diet habits are absolutely normal and they are active too, but sometimes they just go to the corner and stay there for sometime and come back to the top again like some chicken laying eggs at the corner. Yesterday my heating rod broke, however the water is not too cold, its just as the room temperature. I don't have any lighting or a hood to my aquarium, below given the links of the pictures kindly check all of those and tell me what exactly would be the problem, is it the water temperature, or improper lighting or is the fish stressed. Previously i used the ground water, but now due to the lime marks i've decided to use this drinking water (cholrinated). Is my fish sick? and why r my kissing gouramis never kissing?when do they kiss?
My parrot s today them seem to kiss fighting for a while, it was aggressive, they litrally scared me that they may hurt each other, why is it so?please look at my whole tank setup and suggest me the changes i'll have to make, i have an internal canister filter at the left corner(DIY) i made it myself in a pot. Please look thru all the images and tell me the mistakes i made if any, before setting up the tank i did a lot of research and very much familiar with the nitrogen cycle and stuff. I do 70% water change every week and siphoning to remove the poop too. My tank is still under construction, planning to buy the lighting and the hood soon.

moreResolved Question: Is this a good variety of plants for my new 10 gallon tank?
I have a new 10 gallon that I am going to plant. I have the tank all ready. Here is my set-up:
Lighting is a 17 Watt Flourescent Hood (I am going w/ low light plants)
Filtration: Marineland Penguin 100 bio wheel Filter. (yes I know loss of co2)
My substrate is standard aquarium gravel with laterite mixed on the bottom layer.
I am using diy co2 method But I won't add very much co2 to my tank as I don't think I will really need too much.
Oh and I will have some driftwood soon!
Ok as for the plants:
I am going to an aquatic plant store this weekend and I hope to find some decent plants! Here is what I hope to come home with:
Java Fern (anchor onto driftwood)
Anubis Nana (Forground)
Giant Hygro (Mid ground plant)
Water sprite ( Backdrop plant)
I don't want to get too many as I am just starting out. But just let me know if you think these sound acceptable for first plants.
I will add more later but want to start out little.Oh and I have a heater If its neccesary

moreResolved Question: Link to a DIY --simple-- aquarium cover how to?
Does anyone have instructions or a link to making a basci cover? It doesn't need to be pretty, just be able to hold a light and have cutouts for hanging filters and tubes. All I can find are the ones that have the lights built in to the top and doors, all enclosed in a large rectangle topper. Too complicated for me. I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to make one myself, but I figured if anyone had a link around... Thanks for reading.
moreResolved Question: Plants for a beginner planting a 10 gallon tank?
Hello,
I decided to go for another 10 gallon. I am looking forward to a beautiful and rewarding planted tank. I have just finished the substrate. I am using natural non-colored aquarium gravel. I am also using first layer pure laterite which I have mixed with the gravel on the bottom layer of my tank. I am hoping for the best. I am using the diy method of co2. I am using a marineland penguin 100 biowheel power filter. Lighting is a flourecscent hood with a standard 17 watt tube. I am planning to leave the light on a timer for about 7-8 hours a day..??..?? What plants can you guys recomend for me that will be good for someone new to aquatic plants. I want ones that are very adaptable to lots of conditions. Easy care. I appreciate any tips on planting a tank too cause I only kinda know what I'm doing. I won't add the plants for a while though. Just trying to get an idea. Oh and I am still deciding on if I shall have fish or not. Thanks for any info you can provide.
moreResolved Question: DIY Sump and filter?
If anyone has any experience with SUMPs please help me out.
I understand most of the items needed tohave a successful sump/filter. THe only concept I am having trouble understanding is how large of a return pump to use. I am under the understanding that if you pump too much water back up that the SUMP aquarium will go empty and if you do not pump enough then the SUMP will overflow. I could be way off and missing something very important. If anyone has any direct experience please respond or if anyone could find a very helpful website. Also if anyone has any experience with SUMPs and has any tips please pass them on to me. THanks
