ok so im a pretty knowledgeable in fish keeping have kept a reasonable amount of live aquarium plant but i haven't done co2 yet. im planning on doing a diy co2 system for an aquascaped 4 gallon. i know how to build the reactor and i know i need a diffuser but i dont know what i need to get to measure the amount going into the tank or ppm. i read that as long as the ppm is between 10-25 its safe for fish, is this correct? moreResolved Question: DIY co2 system for aquarium- too much co2?
OK- so I made a DIY co2 reactor for my aquarium. I used 1.5 cups of sugar, one pack of fast reacting yeast, a bit of baking soda and warm water all in a two liter bottle. I have it attached to an airstone via airline tubing and a check valve. I just made it about 30 mins ago and already it's making a ridiculous amount of bubbles....like a constant stream of 20-30 bubbles. It looks like an aerator!! Is this even co2? I thought it was supposed to take a couple of days to start?? If it is co2, is it too much? I don't want to create a flux in the pH and kill my fish. Should I pour out the mixture and use less yeast? Thanks!! moreResolved Question: Typical Question for an aquarium?
How do I stop algae or prevent it? I have a 60 gallon tank outside. Everyday it gets sunlight, so I cover most of the sides of the tank to block it from getting sunlight. I know that nitrates, overfeeding, and nutrients in the water, and sunlight will contribute to algae. I know that water changes and cleaning the tank will aid in prevention of algae, but I'm wondering what other methods are there in controlling algae? I put in plants, but my fish destroyed them a few days later and I have a DIY mechanical filter to clean up the other side of my tank to rid of the poop, etc...but I'm suspecting that it contributed to the algae... Would a UV serilizer be helpful in my situation? Snails? Irrelevant to the question but will plecos do well with high fin banded sharks? And is there any aquatic plants that are compatible with goldfish, or with any other fish, that are sold in brand name pet shops? If not, I guess I have to go to my local fish store.Thank you all for your answers. THey have been really helpful. I'm going to wait week before choosing a best answer so I can get a little more info. THANKS AGAIN moreVoting Question: aquarium plant problems...?
Ever since ive added my new plants, and moved my tank, EVERYTHING seems to be going wrong. Half the plants are dieing, and the others just aren't growing. The tank is a 29 gal, with a 65watt coralife (6700K) and a flora glo 20watt. Making the tank almost 3WPG. The water is set for 78 degrees F, and I have a DIY c02 system setup, which runs into the impellar of a power filter motor. There is also an eheim canister filter, and I use a special flourite gravel. I dose the tank with flourish (once a week) and iron (once a week). The plants i'm having problems with are my: chilensis (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+1626&pcatid=1626) moneywort (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+809&pcatid=809) cabomba (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=768+796&pcatid=796) Basically, the chilensis is either turning almost a red/brown colour (but not rotting) in the new leaves, and the old leaves are semi rotting at the tips and just dieing off. The moneywort is just loosing leaves which seem to be rotting off, but any new growth they experience is doing great, with nice colour and everything. But the cabomba is doing worst of all, because the bottom half was brown when I bought it, and all the bottom leaves have fallen off. But again, any new growth at the top is experiencing good strong growth. The only thing I can think of is someone suggested im not dosing macro nutrients (NPK) or my c02 is not strong enough. But I only recently set up the c02, and ive had most plants before, but they never died like this. I am only running one 2L bottle for c02, and it produces I would say 1 bubble every 2-5 seconds. Oh and almost ALL of my plants, except for my anubias, has almost root rot, but there not rotting, just turning brown and not healthy looking. Any help would be greatly appreciated, ive put all this hard work and money into this tank, and I really just want to know whats wrong. ok so im a pretty experienced fish keeper (in an aquarium society, bred multiple types of fish, keeps planted tanks, etc.) but i never tried true aquascaping yet. i plan to aquascape and hex 4 gallon tank the eclipse from marineland. its going to be a low tech tank. the substrate is going to be flourite or something like it and the lighting is just going to be a 10 watt fluorescent light. so my question is about co2. if i want to use co2 for the tank what is a good way. i already know about the diy methods but its a small tank and im worried about killing the fish at night since you cant shut it off. are there co2 systems that i can buy for smaller tanks that dont cost a lotbut if its only a 4 gallon doesnt that mean its 2.5 watts per gallon making it a "high" light level tank moreResolved Question: Questions about DIY rock decorations for my aquarium?

I have recently started a 55g planted aquarium. I don't plan to add any fish. I have 3W/gallon T5s and DIY CO2 going. I have dwarf hair grass and a couple of stem plants in the back. They look healthy and are pearling happily during the photo period. I haven't used fertilizers yet, but I am planning to add dry ferts or NPK. I have obviously read every post on pretty much every planted aquarium related site and forum. Everyone recommends a 50% water change weekly. My question is why? What happens if I don't do a water change at all or do it every 6 months? If I had fish, I can understand that I will start accumulating nitrates at the end of the nitrogen cycle and other dirt and that could skew the balance. Since there is no fish, there is no ammonia, no nitrites, no nitrates. I monitor water chemistry and add fertilizers only when needed to bring the content up to the required ppm for each element so that there is no need to reset the water. So what purpose does the water change serve? As I said earlier, I plan to not add any fish....it's all just plants. more
