Open Question: Algae eater dead with white stuff?
I have had this Algae Eater for about 3 months, and up until this morning, it was fine. He was peacefully cleaning the sides of the aquarium last night, and then this morning I went to feed the fish, and I saw it laying on the bottom dead. It looked as if it had accumulated some kind of disease or formed some white/ gray fungus. I am totally shocked, it happened out of the blue. Also it looked as if it had shrunken. I would just love to know what might have caused this, and if I should be concerned for my other fish?
Thank You!
moreOpen Question: HELP!! GUPPIES POSSIBLY DYING!?!?!?
Today i put my guppies into their new 10 gallon tank. Before they were in a 1 gallon bowl and 2 gallon tank- which was to small so i upgraded. Yesterday i set it up and let it run for 24 hours then put the fish in today. They don't seem to be doing well at all they seem horrible and i don't know why. i have an undergravel filter fit for like a 2-3 gallon tank in there and another filter (not undergravel) which i don't know the "type" of (im not much of an expert) that is fit for 5-6 gallons. It seems to be making a little bit of a current in there which they don't like very much, but i need the filter in there. I also have an airstone in there so the undergravel plus airstone should be making plenty of airation for them... They don't seem well now, before they were very happy. i aclimatized them right... i floated them in the new tank and dumped in a little water from the tank then floated them some more... etc. There are plenty of plants and decorations in there for them to hide in and gravel. The water is also dechlorinized so i don't know what the issue could possibly be. There aren't many fish in there. Three normal sized guppys that you would buy at the pet store and 6 very small "feeder" guppies that i would say probably like 3 would make the same amount of waste that one normal sized guppy would make. So I guess you could say that there are "about 5" guppies in there if that helps. All that they do is sit at the surface in one big Clump of guppies and don't move... they also won't eat any food at all for some reason. I don't know what happened to all to them and i'm worried that they might die here soon. What is going on? does anyone know? And oh ya i have a heater now and aquarium slat in there- before there tank/bowl wasn't heated if that has anything to do with it but acclimatizing them should've been fine with that. Anyways please help i don't know whats wrong.!

moreOpen Question: Is my fish tank okay? (10 points)?
Today for my 5.5 gallon betta tank I cleaned the tank about 30% and since it looks like my betta fish has fin rot, I added some aquarium salt into the new water. I removed my betta fish from the tank and he's in a cup right now. Anyway the brown stuff from my tank filter went everyone in the water so I scooped it out with a fish net (because I was cleaning it in the old tank water), and also when I took my aquarium decorations out the brown gunk went flying everywhere in the water. Well my tank is so brown and cloudy right now, and I added the new water. Should I be fine? I am going to add the betta once everything seems to clear up abit. Thanks in advance. The fish tank is so foggy. o.o
moreOpen Question: Keeping a freshwater jellyfish?
Can I keep a freshwater jellyfish in a rectangular aquarium, provided that I create currents that will keep it from getting stuck in the corners? Also, how much filtration and aeration does a jellyfish need? What kind of plants can I put in with it? UVA bulbs or UVB bulbs for lighting? How much do they eat? Can I have feeding times, or does food need to be constantly available? Do they need to be kept in groups, or are they fine on their own? As for the legality of keeping a freshwater jellyfish as a pet, I've already asked, and it's fine. I'd just like to have something set up for it before I bring it home.Any books you can recommend?
moreOpen Question: Why did my crown tail betta die?
I have had many bettas before and I would say I have a pretty good back ground with them. Its just I went up to find one of my bettas dead and I can not think of a reason of why he died. I got him In January from petco and he was fine. I was keeping him in a divided 10 gallon with one of my male on the other side. They rarely noticed each other. After a 50 percent water change i replaced the decor and the divider. i always just put one male in for like an hour to see if he can get through. i put my other male in and over night my crown tail slipped through to the other side and killed him. I removed the body and did 95% percent water changes on both my 5 gallon and 10 gallon. I moved my other crown tail out of the 5 and in to the 10 and stuck Ice in the 5 gallon. Both were heated at the time but not filtered but at that moment I put filters in. I accidentally knocked the cup my one that died was in and it fell off the desk and on the floor. He was on the floor max 5 seconds. So maybe it could have been from stress? I treat my water with aqua safe and a put a little bit of aquarium salt in as well. I tested the water and everything was normal. I put him in and he started acting very lethargic and rested on his plants all the time. He was not sick and had no ripped fins what so ever. I kept an eye on the temp all week and it stays with in 78-82 degrees so I’m not really sure what went wrong. I did what i always did. My other one is acting normal and is just fine and I did a 95% water change on it so it cant be from water changes.

moreOpen Question: auratus cichlid had fry and now won't eat?
I was moving around some rocks in my aquarium and found an auratus cichlid fry. However before I could do anything my peacock cichlid ate it. I took all the cichlid out and found just one more fry and put it in a breeding box, it's doing fine the fry is about the size of a dime, slightly smaller. I've been feeding it frozen brine shrimp. It's the mother I'm worrying about she won't eat. She grabs hold of the pellets and then spits them out. I do know that their mouth brooders so they carry the fry in their mouth which could be the reason she's not eating, and I have tried looking inside of her mouth for fry but I couldn't see anything. Also is there a chance she only had two fry or were the other probably eaten by the other cichlid.I forgot to add that I've also been feeding the fry crushed up goldfish flakes.
Also the mother is about 2 years old
moreResolved Question: 28L cube aquarium for 2 DPF and a Zebra Oto? (Maybe a question for catx??)?
Hi There.
O.K, the aquarium I'm thinking of is 32cm x 32cm x 38cm, so its almost a cube. I've heard tales of 2 Dwarf Puffers being in aquariums as small as 18L and being fine, so I wondered if This would be alright. Another website I went on said that this should be fine (the 2 DPF and Zebra Oto).
I was wondering though what gender of Dwarf Puffer's I should get. I'm worried that 2 males will fight once they're older, but I don't want to get a male and female as I don't want babies. Therefore I wondered if 2 Females with the Zebra Oto would be o.k? What gender combination would you recommend?
Thanks in advance, I hope! = ]
(Btw, I chose Zebra Oto they only grow to 4-5 cm and are known to get along with puffers, thats true, right?)I've heard all over the web that Otos are the best tankmates (apart from shrimp, though DPF have been known to eat them) for DPF, thats true right?
moreOpen Question: Are you an aquarium expert?
Two weeks ago I purchased an aquarium kit from Pet Smart. It came with a filter and water conditioner. I purchased a gold fish, a ghost catfish, (2) glass tetra, a black and white balloon belly molly and a sunburst wag platy. I also bought 4 snails. The following day, i returned to Pet Smart to have my water check to make sure everything was okay. They told me the water was fine. Within the next couple days, the ghost catfish and two glass tetra were dead. The water temp was fine too by the way. A week later I returned to Pet Smart and purchased another Ghost Catfish and two bleeding heart tetras. The next day, the bleeding hearts were dead. I decided to do my own research and found out that my ghost catfish would soon die of loneliness. Why hadnt the Pet Smart people told me this? So today I went back to Pet Smart, returned the dead Bleeding hearts and the ghost catfish so it woudnt be depressed by being alone. I exchanged the 3 fish for a tiger platy, red wag platy and a swordfish danio. Its been about 5 hours and I found my Balloon belly molly on the aquarium floor, upside down, dead. What am I suppose to do? HELP PLEASE

he is acting fine and has an great appitite and i have done 100% water changes for the past week (he loves it). I have him in spring water as usual, but i think he developed this when i had a friend watch him while i was on vacation. is it possible to have the fin rot fixed by just doing the 100% water changes? He loves to jump out of the water for food and today when he did that little dead pieces of fin came off like single pieces of dust size. Is that mean the dead stuff is just getting off/ can i put him in his big aquarium again?
moreOpen Question: Turquoise film in my Freshwater Aquarium?
Something strange has happened to my tank, literally, over night. For weeks and weeks my tanks has been A-OK, I've been watching and checking it and vacuuming/cleaning regularly, watching feedings and nitrate levels, everything by the book. This morning I woke up and my tank is a complete 180 from yesterday - There is this weird, bright neon turquoise / teal splotchy film coating the glass, some of the rocks and the decor in the tank. 3 of my fish were dead, a 4th on it's last leg, it'll probably be dead in the hour, and my plants shed about half their leaves, and the rest that were still in tact to the stalk were basically sludge, and my filter that I had just recently changed was completely overtaken with muck. It has a growth pattern that looks like mold, not a typical algae pattern. It is not cyanobacteria, I've had that plenty times in my tank and it looks completely different - it is a, literal, NEON coloured turquoise, it looks like I painted the tank with some kind of glow-in-the-dark rave paint. And the water itself is still crystal clear - it's only on the surfaces of objects and the glass. Everything was completely fine last night when I check the tank before bed, and this is how it was when I woke this morning to check it again.........I've searched, and searched and searched, I can not find ANY info on turquoise algae or fungus in aquariums, and other people have told me it's Blue-Green algae......but it is not, they have not seen it, I am familiar with that - it is absolutely not Cyna. I have never seen anything like this before. What is it?? What do I do ?? Can I clean it, or do I need to chunk the entire tank, clean, and start over from scratch? Is this some type of fungus or disease I need to eradicate or can I simply medicate/clean and continue on?? I am totally lost here. It was a 10 gal tetra tank with a an orange glow fish, 3 serpae tetras, and 3 black neons.
2 of the black neons died, and one of the Serpaes. The last black neon is the one that's about to die any second. The other Serpaes look a bit pale, and not as active, but otherwise relatively ok.
The glow fish is acting completely normal, happy and healthy.

I have set up a 30 gallon aquarium (filtered+heated) for my 5 tropical guppies. It is however only 25% full, roughly 8-9 gallons- perfect for my fish. I want to add two small (1-1.5 inch) cory cats to the mix. Do you think they will be fine? I say this because the water level is 4-5 inches, meaning there is more horizontal space for the fish than vertical. Would this be a suitable environment to the corydoras?
any help appreciated.btw
the reason i have the water level so low is due to the filter that i am using- it is an Eclipse filter that is balanced on rocks
i can however try to raise the water level by an inch...

I've been keeping African Cichlids for a little over a year now, and was just wondering if Marine Salt is safe or not. The guy at this Cichlid ONLY store I go to said a tablespoon of Marine Salt per 5 gallons would be fine. The reason I'm asking is because I recently bought a big box of Instant Ocean Marine Salt in hopes of setting up a saltwater tank, and it never ended up happening. I've recently run out of my regular Aquarium Salt, and if Marine Salt is fine, I will refrain from buying anymore Aquarium Salt. I also understand that they make a special Cichlid Salt mix, and I understand that would be the best. However, I'm trying to get by with what I've got for the moment. I know someone will ask what kind of Cichlids, so for the record it's a pretty big mix of Mbunas, Peacocks, Labs, Electic Blues, Haps, etc. So far I've had great luck.... *knock on wood*

moreResolved Question: My work restrictions after injury and surgery?
Reader's Digest version:
I am 22 years old. I fell in March and broke my right ankle. Doctor didn't think I needed surgery but a month later said "Things are looking worse. You need to have your bone screwed together to allow both ends to heal" (basically so they would fuse together again). So they put in plates and screws 5 weeks after I'd broken it. Spent two weeks recovering from surgery. Went back to work in a cast. Normally everybody at work stands (I work at an aquarium) so they decided as long as I was on crutches, I could get a chair at sit at the entrance. Now another month and a half after getting out of the cast I had healed enough from physical therapy to walk without a crutch or cane. My doctors still said "Go easy. Don't stand for long periods." I told my bosses I still needed the chair while at the entrance to sit and rest if ned be, but I'd stand as much as possible and pace if need be. A while back this guy started assigning these shifts to be where I walk around nearby passing out discount coupons and the like. Not so bad to keep walking vs. standing so long as I got breaks. I got scheduled running a small ride and I said "I'm sitting on that old stepladder when its slow" and seemed to get no arguments.
Now I'm back at entrance again twice this week. I've been walking for a while but haven't gotten the 'All clear' from my doc and its rough to stand long periods. Cause its not just the plate and the soreness, its the muscles that shrunk and died when I didn't walk, and I think they cut through a few during my surgery as well.
I got an 'Excelling' performance review from the manager 3 weeks ago, where he said that despite being stuck in one place for 3 months, I became the best entry person they've got.
The long and short of all this is, if I get crap still for wanting to have a chair at the entry (when nobody else gets one) do you think I'm still legit on this. My say is 'I can walk fine, but don't ask me to stand for 7 hours in a row with only a couple quick breaks. I'm going to have to sit while working for brief periods.'
moreOpen Question: how many times a day/week/month should i add "Rift Lake Cichlid Salt" to my aquarium?
I have a 20 gallon fresh water tank with some goldfish and a baby big mouth bass. I caught the bass at my gparents pond, and ive had him for a week. he was doing fine for couple days. eating and happily swimming around, but at about day 4 he started showing signs of distress...his tail locked up and he could only swim with his front fins. when i would pick him up, he would just twitch his middle and wave his front fins and try to get away. i wanted to get some cichlids cause i thought that might cheer him up, so i went to the local pet store where a man told me, that if i wanted to keep carnivorous fish, i needed a buffer, because those types of fish need a higher PH. apparently i was slowly poisoning him with the low PH... so i got the buffer, put it in the tank, and watched. the next day the bass (Killer) was allot better!! he was much more alert, and was even trying to swim. (b4 i left to the pet store, he was listing and locked up, and my family thought he would be dead by the time i got back...boy were they surprised!) i put a pinch in every day after that, and he continues to get better...but the problem is...when i bought the buffer, the man didnt tell me how much i was supposed to put in, and i completely forgot to ask. so here i am, trying to find the answer on the internet and having know such luck. i dont want to put to much in, and i dont want to not have enough, and have him laying on his side dying again. help!!um...i rly dont care about the goldfish at the moment. im not keeping them. they are just supposed to be food for the bass when he gets bigger. im planning on getting a 50-70 gallon tank when i make the rest of the money. i have a filter and pump, so i doubt that i dont have enough oxygen. that also didnt rly answer my Q... hes getting better so i need to know how much to add once i get the bigger tank. for now...hes fine in the 20 gallon, and the goldfish can deal until they...dont have to anymore.oh! also, my tank is warm enough for cichlids at the moment. although, im NOT going to get them until i get my bigger tank. when i get the bigger one il have to get a heater...cause by that time it will be winter. i need 80$ more and il have enough for all of it. and with my job that will be no time flat. so Killer will be fine until i get the bigger one, and he'll have some cichlid friends to chase goldfish with!! :)

I have guppy's in my tank along with 2 pleco's , 1 upside down cat fish and 8 danios.
I am having problems with my water, i tested my water last week and the no3 was way above 100, so i changed 40lt of water one day and a couple of days later a changed 80lt, it the no3 started to go down - that was on monday this week.
I tested the water today and it was up at 100 again!, i changed 40lt water and it is down a wee bit.
I not to sure what to do my guppy's are all dieing off - at least 1 a day, they are acting quiet strange, flicking there body's of every thing and lying at the bottom of the tank then swimming quite erratically.
I have one that has a white patch along its side and it seems to be paralysed and can move only one side.
I am running 2 internal filters (fluval u4 and 4plus) plenty of plants and air stone providing oxygen.
I would be grateful for any help as i do not want to loose any more fish
moreVoting Question: White strings in my betta tank!!?
I've had my betta charlie for a year now in a nice 3 gallon tank with a small aerator and a small heater. I was doing my weekly water change last week and everything seemed fine. Well a couple days later I saw some long white strings hanging from some of the plastic plants and the water was just a bit cloudy. So I changed the water again that night. When I woke up the next day, the tank was really cloudy and there were more of these white strings and it looks like my bettas scales are turning colors. I removed him from his big tank and put him in a small 1 gallon tank. This was four days ago. I am really worried now because, his scales are looking worse, kinda raised and a little fuzzy. He also hasn't eaten in a week and he only stays at the top of the tank. Also, the strings don't move, they just float there.
When I change his water I do a 100% water change, add the water conditioner and aquarium salt.
Now I do the water change daily and add pimafix. (someone said it was a fungal infection). I also have melafix because the people at the petsmart, weren't really sure.
What kind of illness does he have?
Am I doing everything right?
What are these white strings?
Am I using the right medicine?
I really don't want him to die, if I can help him. Thank you!

I had a filter that i used on my 20 gallon tank, it was for 5-15 gallon tanks it worked fine but now the 55gallon tank is way too much for it. I just bought a new filter for more than 55gallon tanks but it doesn't work because the water isn't all the way to the brim. I was wondering if I could just use a small powered pool filter in my tank. Really ghetto, but I don't want my turtle to live in a dirty environment.
moreVoting Question: How Often should you test a 10 gallon tropical fish aquarium to check if it has the proper chemicals?
I just got a 10 gallon fish tank. I have a heater, a bottom dweller, and not the best quality filter that I have to change once a week. I don't mind changing the filter once a week and it was a lot less expensive than the filter that you change once a month. Anyway today I just bought a water test kit to check the PH levels and so forth, it did not specify on the package about how often you check the water. Today it said the the levels of chemicals were fine. Also how often should I change the water, I am aware that every time you change the water or put more water in you have to put the stress reliever conditioner in which I have. I hope I am on the right track with these fish because It is a lot of work! If you could help me that would be great thank you

I live in Minnesota, and the tap water here naturally has a high alkalinity. Are there any harmful effects of such a high Ph?I live in Shoreview; in case you don't know, right over by Roseville, maybe 20-30 minutes from the Twin Cities.Doesn't drift wood make the water all brown?

moreResolved Question: Caring for Betta after a fight?
For background, I have a divided 5gal tank with a Betta on each side; Murderfish and Fishby. Well, my worst nightmare just happened. I woke up this morning and surprise, the divider in my 5gal Betta tank was fallen down and Fishby's back fin was torn to shreds.
While I go to the pet supply to get aquarium glue to cement that sucker up for good, I was wondering how to properly treat Fishby. I have moved him to a "medication" tank of his own and given him some Stress Coat. Any other medicine or home remedies I might try? He doesn't appear to have any flesh wounds, just his ripped fin. Should I keep the water warmer than usual, or the same? I have a 180gal saltwater, would a bit of the salt I use for it be ok for him?
Murderfish looks just fine, by the way (his name didn't come from this incident). I can't be mad at him; it's just his instincts. Trust me, he's my first Betta and still my favorite.I asked the salt question because I have been keeping all kinds of fish, fresh and salt (Jack Dempseys being my favorite) and I am new to betta keeping. Thank you!Thank you all for the advice, you would think I'd know how to deal with wounds after years of cichlid tanks!

moreResolved Question: What do you think about animal captivity?
Like zoos. Aquariums, wildlife parks and whatever. Some people think it's inhumane because they'd rather animals be free in the wild but if there were no zoos, aquariums or wildlife parks how would we be able to see animals in person? Plus wouldn't animals be safer in captivity? In the wild they're hunted and cheetas are endangered now because of it. Whales too. So wouldn't captivity be a good way to also breed animals that are endangered? I think that if captivity is a way to help these animals live longer then it's fine. As long as they are taken care of and not mistreated.
Thoughts appreciatedTed: you are great convincing aren't you. I should use your answer in a persuassive paper. I agree with you and thanks
moreResolved Question: Bottom-feeder for 20 gallon aquarium?
I'm looking for a bottom feeder that would be fine by itself or in a pair for my 20 gallon freshwater aquarium. It has to be compatible with swordtails.
It has gravel, not sand, so I don't know if that rules out cories? I was reading gravel can damage their barbels...this is just petco black gravel.
moreResolved Question: New freshwater aquarium cloudiness...tips to crystal clear water?
I just started a 37 gallon freshwater aquarium about a week ago and the water is pretty cloudy. I already transfered my cichlids over, which in retrospect was too fast, but they were just getting too big for their 20 gallon and I got anxious. Thye seem to be fine and are playing and eating like normal. I know this isn't exactly unusual, just looking for any tips to get that crystal clear water as soon as possible. I used stress zyme to get some bacteria in there, used the water clairty stuff (not working at all), have been doing water changes reguarly. I am also running two filters...my Aquaclear and the Top Fin that came with the tank so filtration isn't a problem. Any tips to move the process along...how often should I be doing partial water changes and how much?
moreResolved Question: Where can I find a great white shark for my aquarium?
I want to get a great white shark for my 55 gallon aquarium. I think that would be completely awesome and would really impress my friends, who are starting to dislike me because of my so-called “insane” spur-of-the-moment decisions. I just have a few questions. Where do I get one? I asked the rude people at Petsmart and they just laughed at me. What do they eat? Just regular fish food, or do I have to buy live goldfish every week? What other type of fish do they get along with? I have a few oscars and an octopus. The oscars do just fine, but Laser (my octopus) just floats at the top on its side all day. Do great white sharks do OK in freshwater or will I have to start putting salt in it? How big do they get? Remember, I have a 55 gallon aquarium, which is pretty big, so I really don't think that will be a problem. Also, what are some good names for a great white shark? I was thinking Twelve Gauge or Hollow Point would be good. Any advise would be really helpful!
moreResolved Question: Have Pets at Home mis-sold me my tank?
I bought a 20 litre tank from Pets at Home a few months ago,
http://www.petsathome.com/shop/corner-20-litre-aquarium-by-pets-at-home-(available-in-store-only)-36895
since then all the fish I buy have kept dying. I left the tank running and then got 2 fan tail goldfish, as advised by the store. They told me my tank would be suitable for 2 fish. The first one got swim bladder as soon as I got it home so I returned it and got a replacement. I tested the water and the ph and nitrates were fine, so thought I was OK. The original one then died, then the replacement. So thinking I was just unlucky went and got just another one. Sure enough 1 week later this one has died. After reading all the advise one here it looks like I should never have put these fish in the tank, its too small. Am I right? If this is the case why have I been told on 2 seperate occasions by 2 different members of staff that the tank was OK for the 2 fish. Have I been mis-sold the tank, would you take it back? I told them I only wanted to keep simple goldfish so my 8 yr old daughter could look after them easily. Please help??
moreResolved Question: Good reptile pet for a student and that is tolerant of life in a cage/aquarium habitat?
Recently I asked a question about websites on iguana care.
Well, I realize that iguanas get really big and as much as I want one my aunt said that I couldn't have one if it wasn't going to stay in a habitat. My room is hardly big enough to call a habitat for a fully grown iggy and I don't want to restrict a massive lizard to a small home. I would feel horrible.
So does anyone have any ideas as to a reptile pet that is smaller, would be fine staying in a tank or cage, and doesn't need much maintenance. I have to work and go to school. I would want to handle it some but I can't let it free roam.
Does anyone have any ideas of a good pet for me?I'm also not a fan of feeding something another animal... so probably not a snake unless there's some magical breed of vegetarian snake out there.
moreResolved Question: Why aren't my Ocellaris Clown Fish Aren't Getting Any Bigger?
Three years ago I bought two tank raised baby clown fish that were a little over 1/2 inch long each. One of them died and I eventually bought another which was a little under an inch long. They paired off and seem perfectly happy and healthy but they are not getting any bigger. What could be causing this?
Some information:
For around two years they have been housed in a 75 gallon fish only aquarium with around 70 lbs. of live rock, two filters and a protein skimmer. The water parameters are good and they are fed once a day...sometimes a mixture of flake food or pellets and sometimes live or frozen food. They have healthy appetites. Their tank mates are a Royal Tang, a Neon Goby and a Striped Damsel as well as a cleanup crew consisting of starfish, snails and crabs. Everyone seems to get along fine and there doesn't appear to be any problems except for the fact that the clown fish haven't grown perceptibly since I acquired them. I can't seem to find any information about this online.
moreResolved Question: What are some good betta tankmates?
I have a heated 10g with average sized aquarium gravel and ornaments/silk plants. I was thinking of getting a school of cories but I heard that they need sand and are not compatible with aquarium salt, which I need because my betta is really prone to fin rot. (yes the water quality is fine)Yes it is heated to the right temp. and I know salt is bad for cories -_-. All is good. Answer my question please?
moreResolved Question: trouble with heating aquariums?
I just had a realization. Every time that I have an aquarium, that is heated, my fish ultimatley end up dieing. however, i am fine with cold water. I had goldfish live for 5 to 6 years, i have a betta living in a tank, i have had it for almost a year. Do i have something here?you are not understanding me. I have the best heater in my tank. Have all 5 times I have tried with thropical. I have a thermometer. My tank is maintained at a stable 76.
And to those who say a betta needs a heater- If all of my fish in heated tanks die, why would I put him in a heated tank!!??!!
Yes I am aware that goldfish live up to 20 years- the only reason they didn't live that long was because the tank leaked and we released them into my aunts pond where a crane ate them.this tank has been up and running for about 6 months. I ran it for a month without fish, and I test the water once a week. All levers are in the normal range, and I use a liquid test kit whick i know are more accurate. I aclimate the fish over a period of half an hour when I add them.my thought was that there was something in my watter that when heated, causes the fish to die.
moreResolved Question: why did the fish die?
ive got a new aquarium and im using Neon Tetras, Platties and Guppies to cycle my tank for the first time. i put them in yesterday morning and they all seemed fine. but when i came to look at them about an hour ago all 10 tetras are gone, we found about 6 dead floating so we took them out.
ive fed them enough, i checked the water before i put them in for the correct ballance, and yes i let the tank mature for about 5 days before i added them anyway.
i checked the levels again this morning for ammonia that etc and the levels were are 0
i have the heater set to the right temperature and i have a good filter.
we brought them from a very reputable supplier so i doubt they were all ill before we got them
why have they all died overnight?sorry, when i said 'mature the tank', i meant i added the dechlorinating liquid, added Nutrafin Cycle and all checked the Ph and nitrate and everything.
i have both liquid and strip test kits
i did the liquid one when it was 'maturing' and the strip one the night i put the fish in and this morning.
i did check it was heated it up to the correct temperature also.oh sorry forgot to say i did float each bag of fish for 20 minutes, added some water to the bag, floated for another 10 then let them swim out.its a 20 gallon tank.
moreResolved Question: My new Cory doesn't seem to be healthy, any ideas?
I have a 180 liter (approx. 48 gallon) cycled aquarium. I have 3 Pitbull Plecos and 4 Pearl Gouramis (2 of each sex). Today I wanted to add a school of Corydoras.
I went to my usual fish shop, which I've never had any problems with. The guy there said it would be fine to have 2 different types of Corys, 3 each to make a school of 6. So I bought 3 Panda Corys and 3 Leopards.
I got them home and carefully adjusted them to the tank before releasing them. 5 of the Corys are doing wonderful. They already made themselves at home. They are swimming around everywhere on the bottom, checking out the sunken pirate ship and live plants and even ate a good meal tonight. But 1 of the Leopards doesn't seem right.
He won't join the rest of the group. He hides out in the corner not moving much. He won't eat anything. He also did a very strange thing, he swam to the surface and then sort of rolled around in circles back to the bottom of the tank.
I checked my water levels and everything is fine. So what could be wrong with this little guy? I already e-mailed the fish shop and I'm waiting for a reply back. But in the meantime, I thought I would ask here.
Thanks!Well, the little guy passed away a few hours later. The fish shop replaced him for free and the new one is doing just fine. I guess he was just weak or ill. Too bad :(
moreResolved Question: Molly aquarium salt issue.?
I have read mollies require aquarium salt. I want to get a few but I have a fish tank that has been running for 4+ years and i wanted to know if will all the other fish will be fine with aquarium salt. I have neon tetras guppies and blind cave fish. Also where can i buy aquarium salt??Its a 30 gallon tank
moreResolved Question: my new guppie got caught in the stream of the filter and flew onto the floor! help?!?
ive been setting up my new aquarium, and so far have introduced a few fish, but while i was floating another bag of new fish in the top, one of the guppies i just put in was swimming about playing with the current of water coming from the filter, when all of a sudden i think it got caught on the wrong side of the current and i just saw it flop onto the floor.
i immediatly picked it up off the wood floor and put in back in then tank.
it swam off, and its been swimming around with the other fish seemingly fine since it happened.
the only damage it got is that the top of its tail is ever so slightly torn.
will it live? will it be ok?its a brand new fish, its not very old, its tiny too!
would buying a medication to help its slime coat thing help or would it not make much difference?
moreResolved Question: What's going on with my fish?
So I just got back from a one month holiday. I left my fish under the care of my cousin, who told me that he only did a water change twice.
In my 17 US gallon tank I had:
- 6 harlequin rasboras
- 6 neon tetras
- 1 male betta
- 2 corydora julli/sterbai
- 1 bristle-nose pleco.
Yeah it was a little bit overstocked, but now the harlequin rasboras have disappeared, and a neon tetra. Obviously they died, but where did they go?? My cousin didn't even realise they'd gone, and the filter is still running fine. I did a 50% water change and totally cleaned the filter - nothing. No bodies, no bones... Yes, there is a lid on the tank so they couldn't have jumped. No cats or other pets..
I can't check water parameters at the moment, as I don't have the means to go about it but I will ASAP. The neon tetras seem to be less shy than before (they were more shy when the harleys were around), and the BN plec as grown amazingly. Everyone else seems fine. I hope to maybe get 2 more julli + 2 more sterbai if I can, and if there's space a few more neons. Yay or neigh?
Any ideas where the harlequins + tetra went? Could the fish have eaten them, as when fish die I know the rest can nibble on their bodies... But the cousin would have noticed this :S Please help me out. I'll try check waters ASAP, so I hope it's not that. The tank looks so empty now.
PS.
