Open Question: Why do my fish keep dying?

I have a 45 gallon freshwater aquarium. I set it up (added water, dechlorinator, conditioner, and finally beneficial bacteria), let it run for a full week and added only up to the amount the lady at the pet store advised (5 fish). I bought a ghost knife, 2 cichlids, a bala shark, and a black molly. The lady told me to wait 3-4 days before adding anymore. I brought them home and let them sit in the bags for about 20 minutes before releasing them. They got along really well and seemed very healthy and happy. A full week later, I went back to the pet store and got 4 more fish (striped rafael catfish, pleco, rainbow shark, and a leporinus fasciatus) and an african dwarf frog. The ammonia levels stated to increase within 3 days and the rainbow shark and leporinus fasciatus got ick. I started treating with fungus clear. The next day I went to petsmart and they advised me to use Ick guard instead. They day after that, I realized that the ghost knife was dead and the catfish and pleco also had ick. Agian, I went to petsmart to get the water tested and got more advise. I raised the temp from 76-78 to 82-84 degrees, added aquarium salt, kept using the Ick guard, and stopped feeding. The next day, the leporinus, rainbow shark, and catfish died, but the ammonia levels did start decreasing. I did a 15% water change, kept the temp up, added aquarium salt, Kept using ick guard, and still wasn't feeding them. I did add some ammonia clear to help temporarily since my fish seemed stressed. Today, I lost one cichlid and the bala shark. The pleco no longer has the white spots, but I can't find the molly, cichlid, or the african dwarf frog (I'm pretty sure they are hiding or dead). The aquarium was so cloudy I couldn't see in there, so I did another 25% water change. I haven't used the ick guard and am thinking about lowering the temp. (BTW- when I do the water change, yes I am using water conditioner and dechlorinator and waiting 15 minutes before adding beneficial bacteria) I have tested the water everyday and everything is normal except the ammonia levels that are pretty high, but slowly decreasing. This is really sad and I am trying desperately to save the few remaining survivors!!! I need HELP!!!Thank you fish expert. It was my fault for not doing the research myself, but I trusted the lady at the pet store when asking if the fish would be ok together and what steps to take. I will be doing more research once I decide to add fish again. Should clean everything, add new water, and start over, or just do a small water change and let it cycle? more

Open Question: Do I need another scavenger fish for my freshwater aquarium?

I have a 20 gal with a few danios and 2 dwarf gourmai. I got a Raphael cat a couple weeks ago but he is a BUM. he doesn't ever come out. He hardly eats anything. At most he is out 5 min. a day. I know he is nocturnal but im up till 2or 3a and I still don't see him. So I don't really have space for another fish but I really need something to be cleaning the bottom. Raphael sits in a decorative barrel and never moves. one of the gourmai's will even rest against him all the time and he still never moves. more

Resolved Question: Will these fish live well together?

My boyfriend and I are starting our first fish tank. It is 15 gallons with a light, heater, filter, air pump. We are looking to get about 5 fish. Open Question: Is this Ick or did I mess up?!?

I just noticed these things on my betta last night! There's about 5-6 white, fuzzy dots located mainly on the front of his face, around his eyes. None of my fish have had diseases before, so I immediately assumed it was Ick. I added aquarium salt to my tank (55 gallon, freshwater) and about 25 drops of the medication. Think it was called "Cure-Away"? I only did half dosages because I own 2 dojo loaches and a blue lobster. I also increased the tank temperature about 3 degrees. It's around 80 degrees F now. Well, after doing some further researching, I am thinking this is something other than Ick, some sort of fungus? I don't want to be stressing the other fish out, trying to cure the betta for something he may not have. Any information would be great. Thanks in advance. more

Open Question: Is it worth changing generic aquarium sand out for a real substrate?

I have a 110L freshwater community tank with a generic white sand base. I've been reading that having a base this fine will cause plants not to grow as well as they could do so I'm trying to decide if it's worth the effort to move the fish/plants/decoration out, siphon out the water into my water tanks and replace the sand with a proper substrate like the TetraPlant one. Does anyone have experience with this and can advise as to whether it'll make much of a difference to the lifespan and growth of my plants and general health of the tank? Thanks. The lighting in the tank is whatever lighting it came with so I may need to take a look at changing the bulbs definitely. The tank lights are on a timer to come on at 11:30am and turn off at 9pm which I think should be a good period each day (but I'm open to suggestion if not) I also use PlantaMin @ 7ml per water change of 15L or so.Ooh lots of replies; thanks all! 60-120 watts? Yeouch! The default in the Duolux 80 are 18 watts each (x2) so are you sure? My tank at the moment has a mix of Vallis, Cabomba and a few others that I bought unlabelled which are all "ok" (but not perfect!). I've had moderate luck with Hygrophila, Fittonia Superba and Eleocharis but they've all been munched to death or fallen apart over a few weeks, hence my quest for better substrate. I couldn't find any local Zoo Med stockists so after researching I opted for Arcadia and also bought reflectors which I don't have currently. I also bought an Aqua Gro CO2 starter kit and will switch off my air stone once I'm using the CO2 to retain more of it. Once the bulbs are changed I'll decrease photo period and see how I get on with algae (currently perfect) I'll see how I get on with all of the above for a month or so and then re-evaluate if substrate is the right option. Thanks all! :) more

Open Question: I have extremely small white worms floating around my tank, what are they and how can treat them?

I have these white things on my tanks for almost a month. I asked 2 months ago about this but only one person who answer my question, he answered my question but I think he's wrong because he said that this white things are anchor worms but they are not, I chosen his answer because he give some tips that can be help me. In first, I thought that this white things are mosquito but I discovered that they not, In second time I thought that they are flea's but it's same with mosquito. My fishes in my tank is a freshwater angelfish not too big, not too small and one pleco in medium size, they live both in 5 gallon tank. I'd search all about these white things but there are no any result of it, they attached on glass of my aquarium and I asked one of the aquarist in our town they said put methylene blue 4 drops for 5 gallon they said. I put methylene blue in my aquarium but it doesn't work, So I stop using it for one month and I never used it. So how do I kill them any medicine required to kill them or clean the tank in whole change? if clean the tank, I don't have other tank for emergency in cleaning the tank in whole change and the water quality in our town is very low it's have corrosion, dust, sand and sometimes it's clean but in other day if you clean again it's clean but its have harmful chemical that can be harm my fishes in minutes.. So what will I do Im planning to bring them in veterinarian because my angelfish is have a fin rot so they will cure it for a day and I will clean the aquarium before they go home in there proper aquarium..... Thank you.. I hope that you will help me in this problematic situation.. Sorry for long question and some story.. more

Open Question: aquarium lighting for plants?

I just got a new freshwater 29 gallon aquarium. I have plants and need sufficient lighting. The lighting fixture is a flourescent T-8 reflector, 8K and 17 watts???? That's less than 1 watt/gallon. Am I missing something here or does that seem very insufficient for plants? Can I leave the lighting on all the time or will the fish be upset if I do? more

Open Question: Tips for starting a freshwater tank?

How necessary is it to check pH of water? I remember as a kid, my family had a large 30 gallon tank. All we did was add distilled water to it with rocks on the bottom. We had some decorations and about 10 fish. One of the fish was a sucker fish and the others were small transparent fish. We really didn't do much but feed them. The sucker fish took care of cleaning the tank and maybe once every six months we did a water change. Hardly and fish died. Were we lucky? What should i do when starting an aquarium. more

Resolved Question: How many of the two fish breeds can I put together in a 10 gal tank?

We have a 10 gallon tank and we have been looking for some freshwater fish to buy. Looking online we found two breeds of similar size, temperament, and care needs. We were looking at the Painted Platy and the Neon Tetra. Both grow up to 2", are easy to care for and recommended for beginners (like us), and live in the same temperature water. We only have 10 gallons but we would like to house both species. Can we house those in that small of a tank? If so, how many of each can we have in the tank and would having all males be alright? We don't want any offspring right now as we haven't had an aquarium in years. Any other advice or tips we would be very grateful for. :) more

Open Question: Is it possible to put freshwater lake fish into an aquarium?

I realize that some may get too big I realize I can go to a fish store and get cooler looking fish I realize there may be laws against it I would just like to know what I need to do to get the fish adjusted to their new water or if it will work at all. Like what foods and what temperature would the tank need to be. I am only talking about a couple fish that I know won't grow too large. Just help me if you know anything about the subject please. more

Voting Question: Can a crab last in my tank?

I have a cichlid aquarium, and I was looking instead of some ugly catfish or sucker fish, I wanted a red clawed crab. Now, the pet store says that it can last at the bottom of my tank and will be an amusing addition, but I would feel safer asking someone else if it can last full time underwater. One other thing, is there any problems involving freshwater vs. saltwater? I was just making sure they were freshwater. more

Voting Question: Would this be a good Aquarium Set up?

I have a 55 gallon, with sand and decor. I currently have 7 Tiger barbs, 2 gouramis, 3 Albino Corydoras, and 5 Gold barbs. If I return the 3 Cory's and give away a Gourami. Would I be albe to get 5 Cherry barbs? So I would have 1blue gourami, 7 Tiger barbs, 5 Gold barbs, and 5 Cherry barbs. Im going for a All barb Freshwater Tank, since Barbs are very Hardy, never had one die on me, not even in extreme conditions! (That does not mean Im going to stop daily maintanance of my fish tank)And because the Tigers just pick on everything else I get, except other barbs, they seem to get along fine with the Gold barbs, its like they know theyre from the same familiy, just different barb species. Anyways, what you guys think? Or if I get rid of both gouramis and the COrys. What other barb combination can I make?? Thanks!! more

Voting Question: What is a good fish to add to my freshwater aquarium?

I have 1 Gourami 1 Red Wag Platy 3 Cardinal Tetra 3 Glowlight Tetra 3 Black Neon tetra I want to get some more Cardinal Tetras, and maybe an upside down Catfish. Is there another type of fish that would go good with my other fish.My tank is 36gal, the temperature looks like 76f, it has been setup for 5 weeks. I have Aqua Clear Power Filter “for 20-50 gallon aquariums.” It’s the kind that hangs in the back of the tank. I do weekly water changes of 10% (I have only done one a few days ago because I wanted beneficial bacteria to grow.) Yes he’s a dwarf gourami I don’t know his name but he is orange at its tail and the color fades when t gets closer to the head and his dorsal fin is blue I got him from pet’smart you can look it up all it says is dwarf gourami. I know that the platy likes to be in groups, and when I got her there where 5, but I did not wait long enough after I set up the tank, to get them, and they all but her died. she seems happy though. Yes my tetras do not school together I read some where that they did or I would have bought more (not all at the same time) they don’t fin nip though. more

Voting Question: Sand or gravel? (20 gallon tank)?

Okay so I am buying a 20 gallon fish tank, I plan on getting a few guppies and maybe 2 or 3 ghost or cherry shrimp. So yes is is a freshwater aquarium, but anyways would sand or gravel be better for this kind of tank? Also which is cheaper? I have a bit of a low budget for fish stuff at the moment until I get a job after the move. more

Voting Question: How can/should I stock a 5 or 10 gallon aquarium?

I am back to aquariums after a 1 or 2 year hiatus. I used to have a 55 gallon that has gone through 2 freshwater setups, and a saltwater. However, I finally had to break it down and give it away. Anyway, now I am considering a much smaller setup, but I'm not sure how I want to go about doing it. Here are some of my ideas: 5 gallon: 1; one betta. I'm afraid I will get really bored with just one fish, so this isn't my favorite, just the most logical. 2, guppies. (no more than 5) This would be slightly more entertaining 3; nano reef (no fish). I've seen plenty of people do it, so I think its a possibility, and finding new critters in the liverock sounds like a lot of fun! 10 gallon: 1; one betta and a few cories. I've always loved cories, very entertaining to me 2; a few guppies and a few cories; my favorite idea for the 10 gallon 3; nano reef, with a single percula, and maybe have a 5 gallon refugium connected to it. What do you guys think? more

Resolved Question: HOW CAN I CATCH THIS FISH?

Okay, I live on a small island in the caribbean. The rivers there are usually shallow (2 - 6 feet deep) and medium to fast flowing. Most of what lives in those rivers are some species of gobies and a a few eels.I need to catch this fish: http://www.thejump.net/id/fat-sleeper.htm http://forums.waterwolves.com/uploads/post-14528-1269402581.jpg http://travel.mongabay.com/china/600/china_103-7043.JPG They get their name because they're sluggish and nocturnal. They spend most of their day hiding under rocks, but you see if they're disturbed they can swim really quickly (around 30 miles per hour). That's fast! I'm having trouble catching them because they do not bite the bait, are very hard to catch in nets and hide really well.Any ideas! Also, I need help catching these two fish for my aquarium. It's only found where I live, but it's also very hard to catch! They're quite elusive and hide very well. Open Question: I have a few questions...What type of fish fish can get along with a betta?

1. What type of fish fish can get along with a betta? I hear that the males are more aggressive than the females...soo...Can the females get on well with more types of fish? (In particular, I want to know if they get along with different types of tetras & glassfish, as that's what's in the tank now.) I don't want the betta to go after them or anything. 2. I had a betta about four years ago and he only lived about a year and a half...Then his whole body puffed like a balloon and a few days after, he died. ): So, my question is, what was wrong with him? 3. Can you give me some suggestions for non-agressive, small freshwater fish (Ones that can get along with a couple tetras and glass catfish.) Also, I have a 20 gallon tank...So, yeah, the smaller, the better. 4. What will happen if you have more than inch of fish per gallon? A friend of mine has a huge oscar in a 10gal tank....I feel bad for him, but he's lived in there for two years, no problems. So, what is the absolute maxumum that you can have in a 20gal? 5.How hard is it to maintain a saltwater aquarium? You don't have to answer all of my questions, of course! Just answer one or two and I'll be happy. Thanks! By the way, everyone in the Y!A fish section is really knowledgable, it's amazing. @_@Argh! I forgot! I also have a crayfish! Will they get along with aquarium frogs or newts or larger varieties of shrimp? Also...(Argh! I have too many questions!)I'm interested in getting a mudskipper. They're just so cute. <3 What size tank do they need? Do they get big? I saw one in the store and he was tiny~. And do they get along with other types of fish?Thank you sydney Linton and trynhelp!! Resolved Question: How do you know when a Freshwater tropical aquarium is fully cycled? ( With 3 fish in it?

I've had my aquarium with fish for about 2 months now. The Nitrites are 0ppm, but the Ammonia in always .25ppm. It's been this way for a while now. I already bought beneficial bacteria at the petstore to help the cycling process. I really want to lower my Ammonia so I can get more fish. Nitrite is 0 and Nitrate is in a healthy level. They have been that way for weeks. Ammonia doesn't seem to change at all. I asked a professional at a pet store that he had been working with fish 10 years and had a reef tank. He told me to NOT do any water changes what so ever. Because if I do the cycling process will start all over again. So PLEASE HELP BEEN HAVING AMMONIA FOR A LONG TIME NOW!!! more

Voting Question: AgriScience Fair Project Ideas?

I was thinking about breeding aquarium fish since it is such a profitable skill to have. If I do this, what freshwater fish is relatively difficult to breed? Voting Question: How to get rid of itchy fish? #2?

This scratching thing has been going on for a long time. I actually got it from a shop, (the owner was horrible, screws up your tank for more money). The scratching thing has be going on from really bad water to really good water. Its not as bad as before, but I still want my fish to be comfortable. my salt level is good, so is my water (just did a test) the only problem is was that my PH was 8.0 instead of 8.3, but thats all. I asked aquarium shop about this problem and they say to change half my sea water with freshwater mixed with salt, but i don't like the idea. I do change my water every 2-4 weeks. so i don't know what to do. also i go to a different aquarium shop now, the owner is very nice and the place doesn't rip you off. :) more

Resolved Question: Interesting freshwater fish?

I have a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium without any fish in it, I was thinking of trying something other than the basic community tank. With that being said, what's the most interesting/beautiful fish that could kept alone in an aquarium with those specifications? Please be specific.I wanted to reinforce that i only want there to be one fish though a pair would be considered, preferably between 3-6 inches at an adult age.Not to sound rude, but i am not a biginner, and i know the routine. But I wanted a second opinion. more

Resolved Question: What the heck is a sump?

Okay I'm want to start a saltwater aquarium, and now that I've mastered the art of freshwater fish keeping I figure I might as well do it now. I have a 125 gal fresh tank and a 55 gal and 35 gal that are both empty (upgrades, upgrades haha) So before I even buy the live rock or sand I'm making sure I've done all the research humanly possible... I've figured out that I can use the 55 as the main tank and the 30 as a refugium( I finally got my head wrapped around hat concept)... But the sump still blows my mind... What does it do? Why do I need it? DO I need it? How do I install it? How do I keep it up? Any and all answers(that are civil) will be immensely appreciated. P.S. I know the refugium is a great place for copepods to culture, but how do you know that some will get sucked into the main tank? more
