I went on a trip to NH and brought back some rocks from the Saco River. I got some fish yesterday (a black moor, a fantail goldfish, and a small emerald cory catfish), and everything in the tank seemed to be okay, except that the "bubble stick" I bought ended up being too big. I managed to get it so that only half of the stick has bubbles coming out, but the current is still kind of strong. Would it be okay if I boiled some of the rocks I brought back from NH and put them in the tank?

moreOpen Question: Fresh water aquarium cycling issue!?
I appreciate that there have already been a raft of related questions regarding this but i don't feel my particular question has been covered. However apologies in advance.
Tank cycling : I set up a new cold freshwater aquarium about 6 weeks ago now and have made every effort to do things correctly, researching as much as I can beforehand and during the set-up (even though it can be difficult with so much conflicting advise!)
I have a 90ltr Nano with a built in back filter box which I have a selection of filtration media, pump sucking in water and a powerhead pumping it back out.
I let the tank cycle for around 2 weeks and to be honest with a little impatience added one 1.5 inch fancy goldfish even though I knew the water quality test results we a less than desirable, however they weren't so bad as to cause too much alarm. One week later I added two Blackmoors and a week after that another small fancy goldfish.
I have been monitoring regularly and have been doing 25-30% water changes every week (I add Nutrafin AquaPlus and Nutrafin Cycle each time and will actually be switching to RO water this week). Sometimes with one or even two 10% water changes in between. However, the results I have been recording have not been in tune with what I believe to be the 'typical' cycling levels.
PH has been steady at circa 8.2 (is this a little high?). Nitrate recently spiked at about 1ppm but has now gone back to 0ppm. Nitrate, after been 0ppm for the first two weeks gradually moved through 10ppm to 20ppm and has remained there. Ammonia is the real issue. Since day one until now it's been at 4ppm (sometimes verging on 8ppm) irrespective of anything I do. This profile just makes no sense! :-(
i can't believe that a 30% water change would not show any change in ammonia readings.
I even added a second filter/pump (Fluval U1) inside the tank to bolster up the main filter (not a bio-filter).
Please help! Am I wrong in my thinking? It's been 6 weeks now and the tank just doesn't seem to be cycling? Am I just being too impatient?
Importantly all four fish seem to be very happy in their environment thus far - especially playing with the air stone and swimming (purposely!) into the powerhead flow stream :-) They are fed small pinches of flakes twice daily and they clear the lot within 2 minutes. No food waste is left in the tank that obvious to see.
Many thanks in advanceThanks for the responses peeps but I'm not sure I agree with a couple of things and just wanted to clarify some more.
The Nano tank doesn't have a built in filter as such. It's just a segregated section of the tank which allows you to add your own filtration media. A pump sucks water from the tank and pushes it out of a flute at the top onto the first media, then down into the next and the next etc then finally pushed back out into the tank via another pump/powerhead. I have 3 layers of synthetic wool (diff. grades), then two bags of ceramic tubes then activated carbon gravel and dead rock at the bottom. So I wouldn't consider this to be a poor built-in filter if you know what I mean (I may still be wrong!). As for number of fish, I am just following a typically given rule of 1 inch per gallon. I have circa 5 inches of fish in a circa 23 US (20UK) gallon tank so am not sure why my four fish is too many?? I can pretty much agree with all other :-) Thanks for the RO water advice!

moreOpen Question: Adding salt to a freshwater aquarium?
I'm just starting my aquarium, for the first time. I bought all my fish at my local grocery store. I have a 29 gallon tank, I have 3 red parrot cichlids, 3 kenyi cichlids, 2 albino cory catfish, and a bullshark. I was reading up on the bullshark, and it says they like "brackish water" so to add salt. Is this necessary? Will it harm any of the other fish?
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated! :)
moreOpen Question: How can I convince my friend NOT to put two male bettas together?
I have 2 male bettas together in a now upgraded 75 gallon tank. So its HUGE. Its completely planted, and stocked with 2 male bettas, swordtails, guppies, platys, mollies, corydoras, loaches, snails, algae eaters (Siamese) but its a BIG TANK. they almost never run in to each other!!!!!
my friend thinks she can do the same thing. I have nearly 14 years in fish keeping!! (freshwater ONLY- saltwater looks cool and easy but then I learned that salinity and how much pressure etc... I was like NO)
My bettas are fine together, but I'M the one who DOES get my fish to get along.
Though I give them space. My fish probably have more room then my Oscars in the 125 gallon tank!!!!!!! 0.0
All my fish get treated equally (SCREW THAT - NO THEY DON'T! The Oscars get the BIG tank)
so how can I convince my friend NOT to get 2 male bettas? My bettas have been like this for 5 years straight. They have had NO problems and don't think they will.

moreOpen Question: Why does Walmart sell Green Spotted Puffer Fish?
How is it legal for Walmart to sell GSP fish in freshwater tanks, list it as a freshwater fish, say it eats flakes, and allow people to buy them misinformed which ultimately dooms the fish?
Granted, I bought mine from Walmart, and all that does is fuel their desire to sell more to line their pockets. I did it more to save the fish's lives given I really wanted one and better to save one from certain doom, than get a regular one at a store that cares for them properly.
I just don't see how it can be allowed. These fish end up sick from being poorly cared for, given its WALMART! They are stuck in freshwater when they need brackish. They are fed flakes when they should be eating bloodworms, shrimp, snails, ect. The buyers are told they can live in a fishbowl based on the BS saying of 1 inch of fish per gallon. The people who buy them never convert them to salt water as they grow, or even bother to learn they are killing their fish.
I mean, isn't this animal cruelty? If they were selling dogs and feeding them cat food, and recommending them be in cages 1/10 the size they need, and allowed to suffer and die from being in an environment they are not suited to would not people protest? Would not people be arrested?
I just don't understand how the treatment of one animal is viewed as ok, but if done to another its an outrage. Fish deserve every right that dogs or cats do.
Is there less laws to protect fish than there are dogs and cats? Or, are there but they are not as strongly enforced?
Is there anything one can do to try and stop the sale of these brackish/marine fish from being sold in freshwater and improperly advertised?
moreResolved Question: I need fish care help!?
Last week I bought 5 neon tetras. I had all of the accessories necessary: tank, filter, freshwater directly from the jugs at the store, food, air stone, air pump, water testing kit, a thermometer, the works. I let them sit in their bag submerged in the tank water to allow them to adjust for 3 hours. Their water and the tank were at about 75 degrees, in the recommended range of 72-85. All chemical levels were in the ideal range according to the test strips. I let them out into the water at about 8:30 pm. By 6:00 the next morning all five were dead. Two days later I bought 5 more fish, got new water, retested and repeated the process. Again by the next morning the fish were dead. Any clue what went wrong?
moreOpen Question: can you mix a freshwater snowflake eel with a dragonfish?
ive got a freshwater snowflake eel and a dragonfish (dragon gobie) in separate tanks and was thinking of moving them both to a single large tank that has an oscar and some african cichlids will they be able to coincide? i know they are both brackish but most cichlids can live in brackish, and i read that dragonfish don't usually get along with fish of meaner temperament, but i wasn't sure. ive also read that some people keep freshwater snowflake eels with fish like oscars, but i was afraid that if i did that then the eel (with no scales) would get bullied and eventually die. what is the recommendation here?

moreOpen Question: AP Bio homework, please help!?
Okay I swear I have read over this 10 times and I am convinced that it's a trick question:
An experiment on a species of small freshwater fish recorded their behavioral responses to different temperatures. Ten fish were each tested once, one at a time.
To begin the experiment, a fish was removed from a stock tank (maintained at 22 degrees Celsius) and placed in a temperature-gradient tank. After the fish had spent 30 minutes in the temperature-gradient tank , the section where the fish was located was recorded. Additional observations were recorded every 5 minutes, for a total of 7 observations per fish.
1. Identify TWO variables that were not specifically controlled in the experimental design, and describe how these variables might have affected the outcome of the experiment.

moreResolved Question: Please help! My fish is in trouble!?
Ok, my parents are divorced and I have a freshwater fish tank at my moms. At my dads I had a fish bowl. In my fish bowl I had a 2" black bubble eyed goldfish and two 1" black mollys. I had these fish is a bowl for about 2 months and they were very healthy and happy. However, on Monday I decided that my fish would be happier in my aquarium were the water was clean and warm. I took them to my mom's and kept an eye on them all day to make sure they all got along. I KNOW THAT YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO KEEP GOLDFISH WITH OTHER FISH, BUT MINE IS VERY NICE! There were no problems, except my tiger barb chased my goldfish a little, but I kept an eye on them and he never harmed the goldfish. In the middle of the week I got some new fish, and again everyone got along. I watched them constantly and it was fun to see that they made little "possys" with each other. However, yesterday(Thursday), I had to go to the mall for a few hours. When I came back, my bubble eye goldfish's bubble eyes skin came off at the bottom. He swims funny so I think he can't see very well at all. I separated him from the rest, hoping that this way I could give him food and make sure he gets it, as well as not being bothered by the others. What happened? He's my favorite fish and was so gentle, I'd hate to loose him. I know some say to put aquarium salt in but I don't have any and my mom won't let me buy some. HELP!

I have a small piece of drift wood in my tank, with some algae on it. It's not the green hair algae, it's some strange white-ish algae. I don't know if that's bad or not. But it's been in there the entire time I've had my tank. It's a 14 gallon freshwater. With 1 male betta, 3 corydoras (albino, a juli, and a peppered.) A very young bala shark (I know the requirements of this species. He WILL get what he needs. He's just growing.) and a rubber lip pleco who is very shy and doesn't usually come out from under the drift wood. I see him occasionally. But not often.
I don't over feed, and I changed my filter a few days ago. So I don't know why my tank keeps getting dirty. When I vacuum it's full of very dark things. Not normal fish waste and food.

ok i have about 6 female fish. and i woke up one day and there were baby fish in the tank, so i got them into a baby net thing attached inside my tank. there are 3 of them tthatr alive i didn't see any others. i looked and my molly is still ppregnantand only one or 2 guppies are not ppregnant so i assumed that one of my guppies had the babies. i dont know how many babies my guppy had but only 3 survived. and i know what to feed them but since they are young and need to grow quickly, how many times a day do i feed them? they are about 2 days old. thank u! ps: ihave a freshwater tank
