Open Question: Should I get the appropriate things for an Open Bottom Aquarium?

OK here goes .. I feel really bored with a normal freshwater Aquarium setup as I've been keeping fishes for about 10+ years now(stop and now continuing) (but not bored with the types of fishes in them) so I was thinking of setting up and Open bottom Aquarium!! a bit like this video :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5InNVJ_Yt… only smaller about 20gallon (high) for the top aquarium .. but not sure how much the bottom 1 would hold yet as I haven't run to the glass cutting store yet to get the right measurements that I want. the setup will be a bit cheaper since I have the top aquarium already (and only need to buy the bottom Aquarium!!) I have already done water cycling (with gravel I took from an earlier tank) .. but have not get the bottom tank (for the open bottom setup).. or the plants or the fishes I'm planing to get neon tetra's .. what other fishes besides white cloud and guppies could I put with these fishes(besides that can you pls advice me on the amount of fishes for this kind of setup??) ?? should i go ahead with the plans i have in my head right now.. or stop and just go with the basic setup and go and get the plants , and fishes :) Thanks in advance!! 19 hours ago - 3 days left to answer. the Top Tank is Length = 26 cm width =40 cm height = 30 cm The bottom tank is length = 60 cm width =45 cm height is 10 cm Any advise would be great .. Resolved Question: Why is brown algae growing in my fish aquarium?

Brown algae is growing all over the sides of the tank and over the plants and little decorations. I just scrubbed everything in the tank on Sunday to clean it off and the algae is back again. I have a glass, 29 gal. aquarium and use the florescent light that it came with. The water is about 78-80 degrees and I have two filters in the tank cycling about 330 gph. I change about 20% of the water weekly and last week I changed 50% of the water. The aquarium is about two months old but I didn't have this problem for the first month and a half but now I can't get rid of it. What should I do to stop the growth of the algae and keep it from coming back? Is their anything I can put in the water to kill the algae so I don't have to scrub everything again? The fish seem perfectly normal but I would like to fix the problem before it affects their health. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Are you an aquarium expert?

Two weeks ago I purchased an aquarium kit from Pet Smart. It came with a filter and water conditioner. I purchased a gold fish, a ghost catfish, (2) glass tetra, a black and white balloon belly molly and a sunburst wag platy. I also bought 4 snails. The following day, i returned to Pet Smart to have my water check to make sure everything was okay. They told me the water was fine. Within the next couple days, the ghost catfish and two glass tetra were dead. The water temp was fine too by the way. A week later I returned to Pet Smart and purchased another Ghost Catfish and two bleeding heart tetras. The next day, the bleeding hearts were dead. I decided to do my own research and found out that my ghost catfish would soon die of loneliness. Why hadnt the Pet Smart people told me this? So today I went back to Pet Smart, returned the dead Bleeding hearts and the ghost catfish so it woudnt be depressed by being alone. I exchanged the 3 fish for a tiger platy, red wag platy and a swordfish danio. Its been about 5 hours and I found my Balloon belly molly on the aquarium floor, upside down, dead. What am I suppose to do? HELP PLEASE more

Open Question: Why did all of my neons die?

I have a 44 pentagon gallon aquarium that has been established for 9 months. It has 2 filters, one 40i and another 25-40i (both in tank.) It has 2 bubblers, and a live plant. I have a blue dwarf gourami (3 inches) 5 guppies (4 fancy tail males 1 female), 4 small glo-fish (about 1.5 in. each) and 6 neon tetras (small 1in.) A couple days ago, I got 2 more small neons and three small glo-fish (all about 1 inch.) Hardness is moderate (120 ppm), Alkalinity 120 ppm, pH 7.2, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 20. All fish that have been were in the tank before the new ones have been in there 5+ months. I do a 25% water change once a week, treat the new water with aqua safe, stress zyme, and nutrafin cycle (appropriate dosages) and scrape the glass of any algae growing. About once a month I change one of the filter cartridges, changing the opposite one every month. I feed them a variety of foods, alternating each day: flakes, pellets, granules, brine shrimp, blood worms, and krill. All the fish in the tank are healthy with much more vibrant colors than when I first got them. I try not to over-feed and fast them once in a while. When I got the new fish I floated them in the tank for 30-40 mins. I inspected the tanks at the store to make sure there were no dead fish in with them. When I released them I threw out the aquarium water from the store and put an extra shot of stress zyme and of cycle in the tank. Everyone is doing really well, except today when I went to do my regular water change, all but 3 of the neons were gone. I pulled out all decorations, did a water change and test and only found one body. Everything tested normal (as noted above.) One of the three neons was swimming funny so I pulled him out and put him in my hospital tank. Why did they all die? they were super happy before and all looked nice and healthy, ate good, etc. I spent about 20 mins on the phone with the pet store aquarist guy asking him questions but he couldn't really answer them. He said to put aquarium salt in my tank. I know you are not supposed to put a lot of salt in the tank if they are not used to it, but that's what he recommended. Help? I don't want the rest of my fish to catch something and die? I think I'm doing everything right, and even though it sounds like a lot of fish they are all small (except for the gourami) so I don't think the tank is over crowded. Again everything tested normal so I don't know what to do!!! Any advice from any experienced hobbyists out there?Update: now all 8 neons are gone, the three that were left died off one by one. =(Another Update: the male guppy that I had the longest and the female guppy that were in the tank are now dead too. Please help!! I have treated the water with tank buddies life guard and parasite clear. I will do another water change tomorrow. I really feel helpless watching each of my babies die one by one!! =(btw the female guppy had red streaking all over her belly. She was the only one that showed external signs of something being wrong, all the others began by swimming aimlessly. more

Resolved Question: Turquoise film in my Freshwater Aquarium?

Something strange has happened to my tank, literally, over night. For weeks and weeks my tanks has been A-OK, I've been watching and checking it and vacuuming/cleaning regularly, watching feedings and nitrate levels, everything by the book. This morning I woke up and my tank is a complete 180 from yesterday - There is this weird, bright neon turquoise / teal splotchy film coating the glass, some of the rocks and the decor in the tank. 3 of my fish were dead, a 4th on it's last leg, it'll probably be dead in the hour, and my plants shed about half their leaves, and the rest that were still in tact to the stalk were basically sludge, and my filter that I had just recently changed was completely overtaken with muck. It has a growth pattern that looks like mold, not a typical algae pattern. It is not cyanobacteria, I've had that plenty times in my tank and it looks completely different - it is a, literal, NEON coloured turquoise, it looks like I painted the tank with some kind of glow-in-the-dark rave paint. And the water itself is still crystal clear - it's only on the surfaces of objects and the glass. Everything was completely fine last night when I check the tank before bed, and this is how it was when I woke this morning to check it again.........I've searched, and searched and searched, I can not find ANY info on turquoise algae or fungus in aquariums, and other people have told me it's Blue-Green algae......but it is not, they have not seen it, I am familiar with that - it is absolutely not Cyna. I have never seen anything like this before. What is it?? What do I do ?? Can I clean it, or do I need to chunk the entire tank, clean, and start over from scratch? Is this some type of fungus or disease I need to eradicate or can I simply medicate/clean and continue on?? I am totally lost here. It was a 10 gal tetra tank with a an orange glow fish, 3 serpae tetras, and 3 black neons. 2 of the black neons died, and one of the Serpaes. The last black neon is the one that's about to die any second. The other Serpaes look a bit pale, and not as active, but otherwise relatively ok. The glow fish is acting completely normal, happy and healthy. more

Voting Question: Cheap 10 gallon fish tank.?

So right now at Petco, the glass Aqueon aquariums are one dollar per gallon. So basically, its extremely cheap. I'm thinking about getting one for when my betta passes on while the sale lasts. Should I? And what other fish go well with about 5 neon tetras in a 10 gal. tank? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Please help urgent asap immediate?

I have a 28 gallon euro aquarium with marineland stealth pro 150w heater, penguin 150 bio filter, sand substrate, 4 big black stones, glass canopy and 17w strip light.*3 albino cory catfish 1 female betta. Ok so I unplugged my heater filter and light to do a 50 percent water change. I took 50 percent water out. The temp is down from 80 to 76. I use hose water which contains heavy metals, chlorine and chlorame stuff toxic to fish. I don't have a bucket or anything to fill up with water and add conditioner I have to put the hose in my tank and fill it up then add conditioner. It take me about an hour to fill the tank up so can my fish take 1 hour exposed to untreated tap water with heavy metals, chitons, and chlorame? And also I'm cycling so how long can beneficial bacteria be exposed to the toxic substances listed above? And it's not possible for me to use any bucket or any container. What should I do my temp is dropping and I don't know what to do should o just take the fish out and put them in a cup of treated cold water? Or scoop out some tank water put it in 4 cups and put 1 fish in each cup? I'm panicking lol this is my first water change with fish lol! What do I do? more

Resolved Question: Is this safe to put in my aquarium?

I thought it would be a cool idea to have an empty bottle of uv vodka in my new 30 gal. tank for decor/place to hide... I am getting small fish like glo-danio, guppies and tetra and a small 3" pleco (thats max size for its breed). What would I need to do in order to do this, if it is even safe? Also thinking about using a glass cutter to cut the bottom of bottle out to create tunnel sort of cave...would remove cap either way, and maybe use a cork if top opening of bottle if fish getting stuck in the small opening is possible... more

Resolved Question: What type of fish is this? (found in hawaii)?

I found and caught a fish in a tide pool here on oahu and was wondering what type it was I see it in lots of tide pools, so they're common and they look like gobies (with the huge fan-like fins, tall-ish dorsal fin, and same face shape) and it's sand-colored with a head that's slightly larger than the body. I said it was sand colored, but it's also got dark-ish bands on its body, plus it can make its belly (or the large fin on its belly) stick to the aquarium glass. What is this fish??? more

Resolved Question: Fish Compatibility Fresh Water Aquarium?

I have two Opal Gouramis, four Zebra Danios, four Neon Tetras, two Red Finned Tetras, one Yoyo, one Pictus Catfish, three Ghost/Glass Catfish, one Sailfin Pleco, and one Spotted Pleco. I have a 33 gallon tank at the moment, and I keep the temperature at 78/79 degrees. How hard/soft should my water be? What about PH levels? In the long run will there be any territory issues regarding them? I am also aware I should increase my tank size in future for size and movement of my fish. I am also going to get Red Line Torpedo Barbs once I increase in size, will that effect the hard/softness and PH levels required to sustain a good tank?My Tetras are all fully grown, and the Pictus is still rather small, so I don't have to worry about that yet. I do 10% water changes weekly also, but I cleaned out my power filter today, and as the video that came with my tank said, rinsed out my Sponge component of my filter. I soaked it in my aquarium water after, have I harmed the Beneficial Bacterium in my tank in doing so? more

Resolved Question: Am I caring for my betta fish properly?

I recently (as in 10 minutes ago) got a Betta fish, and I've been reading on how to take care of them. If someone could double-check to make sure everything is in order I would feel so much better, because I've never cared for one of these before. I have a 1 gallon tank with decorative aquarium pebbles (the glass kind) in the bottom. I have an artificial plant as well. I washed all of them thoroughly with a little bit of mild soap and I'm about to introduce the fish. It is out of the sun, away from any heating or cooling vents, and in a generally stable area light and temperature wise. I have well water, which isn't chlorinated, so I will be using water from my sink to completely replace the tank water once per week. I have freeze dried pellet food, and I will be feeding him 3 times a week (the amount it says on the food package.) I have a couple questions as well. The tank I have is a little decorative, and the opening is not directly on the top of the bowl, it is off to the side a bit. As in Northwest instead of North if the bowl were a compass. Will that affect the fish? And I was wondering how I would regulate the water temperature, because I've read that it must be warm. Should I get a thermometer to make sure the water is the correct temperature? Thanks for any help in advance =) more

Resolved Question: which hamster cage for 2 ROBOROVSKI HAMSTERS?

hey, recently i got a pair of robos, to go with my 2 syrians, and i thought that i would get them a "proper" cage for my birthday. well, they are in a large plastic box - they are very happy btw. well ventilated aswell. so i thought...a fishtank...or a proper hamster cage. some pics. Hagen LivingWorld Small Pet Home Exercise Dome (THE HAMSTER CAGE) Pros - Very big, similar size to rat cage (my syrians are in one each), looks very nice, not tacky, and comes with accessories, and they can climb the bars. but idunno if they're climbers. maybe more "diggers"... cons - not sure about wooden floors - may have to give layer or two of non toxic clear paint, so they dont pee straight onto the wood and it would be easier to clean. they are not chewers. they are escape artists lol :L so am worried about bars. it says "suitable for adult dwarf hamsters"...well for a start robos are the smallest of hamsters. secondly they are not the first pair of robos im gonna get in my life. and its not as sturdy and good as a rat cage, yet same price!, price is ridiculous. £50. but if its better for the hamsters... and of course, a pic of it... http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/rodents/cages/hamster_mouse_cages/hamster_cages/40877#more Fish Tank (the one i'd buy if i got one) pros - very easy to see and take photos of them - considering they're robos and i will not be handling them nearly as much as my syrians, easy to clean, impossible to escape out of. i can pile up woodshavings so they can dig and burrow. they love doing that. saves me getting a "digging tower" (by trixie if u dunno what it is) cons - cannot climb bars - but i dunno if they actually like it, since they've been in a glass tank in pets at home, then bought home and put in a plastic box. hmm... ..... and not as big as the hamster cage. expensive for a fish tank. £33!!! not including the mesh lid which i'll have to buy to keep them in it.... and is heavy. no handles to carry. and more difficult to clean out as is heavy. with the hamster cage the whole like cage lifts up so you just empty the base. oh, some pics - http://www.petsathome.com/shop/aquarium-by-clearseal-(available-in-store-only)-36345 if you go on the size select thing its the second one in the list, i think it says 30x15x12. big enough. and i dont wanna go any bigger because its longer - and i've no room at all for any longer!! So... i'm stuck. i've pros and cons for both!! and yes, i have considered a gerbil cage but bars of gerbil cage way too big for robos and they'd escape. plus gerbil cage even heavier, and i've run out of room lol - 3 cages!!! please dont say "fish tank" becuz its cheaper, or "hamster cage" cus it says the word "hamster" on it therefore its suitable, and a fishtank is not suitable because its not ddesigned for hamsters, its designed for fish, cus thats not true. and give reasons for your answer :) thanks oh - an idea of what the finished fish tank would look like... and its the fish tank i would get if i got a fish tank lol... this. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290464269242&_trksid=p2759.l1259 cool, huh? and yeah, i'm not gonna get that wooden top. they sell mesh ones too :)ok - i haven't made myself clear enough - i have no rats. lol. i have 2 syrian hamsters, they are in a rat cage EACH lol, they've hardly even met XD the 2 robos arre going in the cage :) more

Resolved Question: Aquarium Photography with Canon Rebel xsi 450D?

Hello all, I have been working at the local aquarium and I have seen many visitors take fantastic pictures with their fancy cameras. I am also into photography and just recently purchased a Canon Rebel xsi 450D. I LOVE this camera and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a camera that is for travel and small trips. My question is... how do I take fantastic photos of the fish and other marine animals without having glare or blur from subjects moving to fast. I have done some research but have not come across and suggestions for this camera in particular, so I thought I would ask you guys. I understand the flash can be a good or bad idea. I don't have a rubber hood, so is placing the camera against the glass a bad idea? What setting should I use? Sports, so I could stop a moving subject? Also what should I set my ISO speed to? Any suggestions on how to take pictures of the sharks, which are in very dark waters with little light in the water? Also we have a green sea turtle who is my favorite animal there. We only get to see her from above the water, so what setting/ ISO speed do you suggest there? Any suggestions? Anything would help right about now. more

Resolved Question: EMERGANCY GOLDFISH: Ammonia poisoning?

I just noticed my young Black Moor has ammonia poisoning. Because he is dark I realized sooo late in and he is in rough shape and im really nervous im gonna lose him! He has VERY red gills and was gasping at the top for air. When I started to clean his bowl (before i noticed how bad he was) he started floating around and somersaulting uncontrollably) He was in a couple gallon bowl that I thought i changed often enough but I guess not. So i moved him into my 10 gallon aquarium that has a filter and a tube that produces the bubbles so it has a lot more oxygen and he is clearly doing BETTER but still very worried about him. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO? Also- the aquarium contained my larger red capped oranda and it kept nipping and biting the moor when i put him in there so I moved him into the bowl the moor was in that now had a 100% water change with a couple glasses full of his aquarium water and some aquarium salt..... is he going to be ok in there until i can hopefully get my moor better? Is there enough of my orandas bacteria in there for him to be ok? HELP! I LOVE MY FISH!!!!!!!!Sorry about the grammar! I typed it so fast hoping for an answer ASAP. Also, when I say he is doing better in the aquarium, its not much better. He can now just control his swimming and isn't at the top 24/7. His gills are still very red. And if he does get better, when will i know its ok to move him to a aquarium that i AM going to buy him? Because I want to keep my oranda in it because he just got over a swim bladder problem. Resolved Question: Moving 10 fish to college. Driving time is about 90mi. 15 gal tall tank with stand.?

Please excuse bluntness, and know that my animals’ welfares are #1 in all of this <period>. Money and time will not be considered. You can view the tank here: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v51/elves117711/Fishy/ Tank: 16 gal tall (20 long x 10 wide x 19 depth). Filled with TONS of fake plants and about 3-3.5 inches of sand-gravel mix. Kept at about 78-80*F (no choice, temp increases due to my tank light). **Tank Plan 1: Empty all water from tank and transport tank with sand still in place (if Dad thinks he can lift it without the tank breaking <-any advice??). A very very small amount of water will be left to keep the sand wet (don’t want to kill bacteria) and the larger decorations will be kept buried in tank during transport. I will flip the decorations regularly to ensure they remain damp and covered with damp sand. Slowly lower water temp over 2 days. **Tank Plan 2: Empty entire tank to the bottom (i.e nothing but glass). Put the sand in a large tub and keep lightly dampened in the same matter. Main concern: keeping sand in tank to save room in SUV. Slowly lower water temp over 2 days. Community: 1- Passive Male Betta, 2- Female Dwarf Gauramis (fairly passive), 7 Zebra Danios, and 2 mystery snails. (Please note, my tank is not overstocked -I have had many opinions-none professional claiming it to be overstocked-and researched before implementing; the one gal/inch adult is a *general*, beginner's rule. I did a great deal of research before introducing these fish to each other. I have had no problems with the community what so ever.) **Fish Plan 1: Fill this tub (little less than 4 gal http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31kPJSG1ttL.jpg&imgrefurl=http://oaktreefoods.com/tag/sterilite&usg=__TkIuLH6YXy13jz2c0RDZheCIutA=&h=500&w=500&sz=13&hl=en&start=16&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=_53GZdpEAB7ioM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsterilite%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1T4ADRA_enUS349US349%26tbs%3Disch:1) with aquarium’s water. Put dwarves, danios, and snails into it with many if not all fake plants. The same will be done with this one gallon http://www.petco.com/product/104215/PETCO-1-Gallon-Corner-Aquarium-Kit.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch and the betta will go in that with a plant or two. Cover both “moving tanks” with towels but check periodically to ensure that all fish appear normal during transport. Aquarium salt will be provided in each moving tank. Fish not fed for day and half to decrease ammonium levels. **Fish Plan 2: Take all fish out and put into separate baggies: Betta in one, 3 danios in one, 4 danios in another, two gauramis in one, 2 snails in one. Put all bags into a cooler and close lid. Each will have aquarium salt. Fish not fed for day and half to decrease ammonium levels. Plans’ Concern: I have never used API stress coat. Will the salt do just as well? I would prefer to not start using new products. Lid: Marineland’s Eclipse 1; includes carbon filter. **Filter Plan 1: Drain filter and remove lid from tank. Throw out carbon filter. Float bio-wheel wherever (depends on which Fish Plan I decide on) –rotated periodically to ensure wetness. **Get-there Plan: Carry tank to room (2nd floor, there is elevator) and set up on stand. Get lid all ready to install. Get tank sand all ready. Pour about 4 gallons of water (taken from aquarium) into tank. Check temp differences with electric cooking thermometer. –Assuming same temp-- Introduce fish (all but snails and betta who should be fine waiting) and fake plants to tank. Let bio-wheel float. Set up decorations. Float betta and snails separately in tank for 10-15 min or so (to help with any possible stress-aggression). Set out & condition any needed additional water at this time (pour in once temp is =). Introduce betta & snails. Fish will not eat for 24-36 hrs. Any comments, warnings, or advice to help with the move of these fish would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and take care. more

Resolved Question: Very tiny white bugs in betta tank? (pic included!)?

I have about a 4 gallon betta fish tank. about 3 weeks ago i bought a wisteria plant from petco and put it in. I thought it was great never saw anything wrong with it since i put it in and my betta loves the thing! but last night i noticed these very very very tiny little white critters moving on the glass on the aquarium (well its plastic..) They don't seem to be affecting the fish, nor are they on him. they're about the size of a grain of sand and there are hundreds of them everywhere! what are these things and will they be harmful? I did a little research but i'm unsure. I think they might be some type of copepod. what should i do? i want to change the water out, but i don't want all those little things that i can barely see crawling on my skin and infesting me! HERE IS THE BEST PICTURE I COULD GET. THOSE TINY WHITE SPECS ARE ACTUALLY MOVING! http://picasaweb.google.com/s.chaffin47/Byugs# help!aww maaan. my betta LOVES that wisteria plant. always sleeps in it. i would hate to get rid of it. i guess i have no choice..?WOULD GHOST SHRIMP OR SOME TYPE OF SMALL CATFISH HELP'? more

Resolved Question: What is a good dorm-room pet for my boyfriend?

Hi :) My boyfriend is moving into his dorm in about a month and has asked my help in getting him a dorm room pet. The rules for his dorm room are that the pet must be able to live in no larger than a 20 gal glass tank, so I am thinking either some easy care fish, a water dwelling frog and tadpoles, a tree frog and tadpoles, small turtles, hermit crabs, etc. Things that could easily and COMFORTABLY live in a fish tank, I'd never put something like a hamster or gerbil in one, that's cruel. I was wondering what would you choose to be your dorm pet? A) A colorful aquarium full of small fish B) Half land/Half water exhibit with turtle(s) C) Swampy aquarium with frogs/tadpoles D) Painted hermit crabs Please vote and say which species you guys recommend. Thanks so much for your help! more

Resolved Question: How do you tower live rock in a salt water aquarium?

I have a 140 gallon Salt Water Aquarium at home and was wanting to know some ways as to how to tower the live rock without it touching the glass on the sides. The aquarium itself is about 4 feet tall and is bullet shaped (meaning there the back is up against the wall and the sides stretch forward curving at the end in the shape of a bullet) I currently have live rock along the bottom but all the fish seem to just hang out at the bottom so as to be around the live rock. Does anyone have any suggestions or way as to how to tower the live rock? more

Voting Question: How do I know if my fish is dying? Or if he's sick? What can I do about it?

I have a comet goldfish, who've I've had for about a year and a half. He's kept it a Baby BiOrb tank with gravel and a constant bubble filter system. I feed him twice a day, about 4-5 flakes each time. I change his water at least once every three weeks. Recently, there was an outbreak of brown algae in his tank, so I got AlgaeFix from a local aquarium and in a few days, about 80% of the algae was gone. Around this time, I noticed that his behavior was a bit different. He wasn't as active as he usually is, and he wouldn't come up to the glass when I put my finger up to it (which he normally does). He didn't swim as much, and kinda just floated in the water, but not on his side or anything like that. I decided to change his water, clean his tank, etc etc. I cleaned out all the algae, which for some reason was green now, and did my normal routine for the tank business. It's been about, 2-3 days later. I walk out to check on him, and he's floating on his side about half way in the water. I FREAK out, and I tap on the tank, and he swims *straight up* to the surface, than darts back down to the bottom of his tank where he just sits in the gravel. He's breathing fine, and his eyes seem clear. But he's not swimming, and he's at just at the bottom of the tank. He doesn't react to me, or anything in the water. Every now and then, he'll spastically dart about the tank, then settle back on the bottom. I'm really worried. Is he sick? Are these his final days? Is there anything I can do? I'm really desperate to keep him alive! He's about 2.5" long, I'd say. He's in a 4 gallon tank too. more

Resolved Question: How to redecorate aquarium?

This is the only aquarium in the house but I do have the container that my betta came in still...So do I just get a large glass bowl, fill it with aquarium water some of the old gravel one of the plastic plants and then empty the aquarium and redo everything and then add my fish the next day or what??? Any sujestions?Wow! Thanks X Casual X and A. Those were both great answers but I don't really know wich one to choose so yea :D I think I'm going with X Casual X's plan because it just seems more simple to me. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: New Aquarium Water Cloudy, help?

my new 90g freshwater aquarium seems clear from the front, but it is a bit cloudy when looking from one side to the other. it has been up and running with 2 canister filters running charcoal, sponge, biological, and nitrate media for the past 5 days. i threw a raw shrimp in there for a few hours to get some ammmnia cycling 2 days ago if that has done anything. also it seems to have a very very light greenish tint when looking closely, but maybe this is the background reflecting, because there is no algae on the glass surface. i washed my gravel and rocks thoroughly, and i heve one piece of wood in there. i would like to wait 2 more days before i add my first fish (tiny, juvie, green terror). i wil ad fish slowly at a time so my bacteria colony can develop. any ideas on why my water is cloudy, anything i can do?, should i wait an see if it will clear up on its own?.... also i plan on planting a few plants in my tank. thanks, more

Resolved Question: Fish tank emergency, foggy yellow water-slime-low oxy content?

Okay I've come to the end of my rope. I have been up all night trying to save my aquarium and I am now reaching the limits of what I can do with my current knowledge. Here is the problem I began my tank maintenance two days ago (I spread the work out to avoid over stressing the fish). I started by cleaning the algea from the front of my tank glass and then last night I rinsed out the filter before I headed out for the evening. I got home and the water had turned yellow and two of my fish were gulping air at the surface of the water. I was concearned to say the least so I immediately vacummed the bottom of the tank and treated the water for amonia. Once that was done I also skimmed the surface of the water for slime. This seemed only to agrivate the situation as the water became cloudy and the remaining fish began to gulp air as well. To make matters worse my Flying Fox died and the clown loach was showing signs of passing on as well. I did an immediate 10% water change (bringing the total up to 20% for the night). For a short time this seemed to work and the fish began to recover, but the tank continued to cloud over. Things began to deteriorate again and I was forced to do another 10% water change and then skim the water further for slim which had began to build up rapidly. I was forced to remove the Loach and put it into a quaranteen tank (water was 50% new treated water and 50% old water). The loach not only recovered but showed unpresidented signs of life. I then removed all items from the tank and cleaned them thoroughly (they have not been added to the tank yet) and I vacummed the tank once more, did another 10% water change on top of that and skimmed for Slim as well as a second treatment for slime. If I do any more water changes I am going to risk Ph shock. The tank has been running for at least 3 years and I have had many fish in my past and I am completely comfounded by what is happening. I have read that this may be a bacterial infection but I am loath to us anti-biotics at this point. This is beyond my knowledge. Tank size: 20 gallons Fish: 3 Bala sharks (about 3-4 inches long, I know that I am going to have to move these to a larger tank, I just don't have one yet) and one small clown loach. Plant life: Was obliterated by Flying Fox... seems odd but I watched him eat the leaves on several occasions.Water filter is on Fish are begining to try to jump out of the tank...I am executing a complete water change. Removing fish to fresh water has rejuvinated them. I will replace water and then hopefully they will be okay.Well when I finished responding to the first answer I turned around and in the few moments it took me to type my note my fish looked like they were all about to die. I decided that drastic action was needed. At the time I only had the first answer and a complete water change seemed like the most likely way of saving my fish. Indeed getting them into an old (and very much clean) Ice cream bucket they began to recover within moments. Three of the four remaining fish survive now in a Ten gallon tank I am using as an ad-hoc enviroment (there is nothing else in it) after getting the water out of the 20 gallon I observed that the algea seemed to be secreeting the slime. Its black with a slight green tint. I have never come across this stuff and I am able to confirm that the algea is the culprit because when I scalded the drift wood slime seeped off it in rivulets. I am contemplating the future of the drift wook.Unfortunately in my haste I have failed to save a water sample for testing :( more

Resolved Question: Setting Up a 'Scary' Fish tank?

So I have a 55g aquarium, recently the last goldfish died off. So now I get to plan a whole new tank. I want to make it scary looking. Black gravel, skull decorations, dark backdrop... and of course, scary fish. But I need a bit of help deciding what to get. Currently there is a pleco and a dragonfish/violet goby in it. So it'll need to fit in with those, otherwise, it doesn't matter as long as it's creepy looking. I was thinking maybe a bunch of blind cave tetras and some glass fish? Or maybe a larger carnivorous fish. What you you choose?Oh wow! I love those black ghost knifes! How big do other fish have to be for them to not fit in its mouth? I think I'll go with one of them, but would full size cave tetras work also, or would they be eaten? more

Resolved Question: Fish Filter is LEAKING!?

So a couple months ago...maybe even a year...YES a year ago, my penguin filter( For 75 Gal.) dropped on the floor...why? Because I have a Red Belly Pacu that I've been trying to give away for over 2 years. Its too huge, and simply does not fit the tank, and i wont allow it to suffer. Anyways Im ranting again. Lets get to the point. The filter was sitting on top of the aquarium( stupidity on my part) and the pacu i guess unknowingly rammed into the glass, and the filter came tumbling down to the ground. The motor itself is fine and dandy, but its leaking from a SMALL crack. It's like 5 or 6 drops per second. I havent turned it on ever since. All I have is a bubbler and myself cleaning his tank 2-3 times a week. Its a pain in the a**. So my question is can I buy some kind of sealant like silicon or something? Or just buy a canister filter...its so expensive though...ESPECIALLY Elhiem or however you spell it. Hahaha. Plus if your interested in a 9-11 inch pacu...tell me. more

Resolved Question: Can you put fish in an aquarium that was used by a hamster?

My roommate used an aquarium for her pet hamster for a year. I was going to give the aquarium to goodwill but didn't know if it was safe to put fish in it after it was used by a hamster. It's a 10 gallon glass rectangular tank. I've cleaned it with just normal household cleaning products and then an organic glass cleaner. more

Resolved Question: Flowerhorn Fish with Swim Bladder Disease?

this morning when feeding my flowerhorn e seeed perfectly normal and healthy, but when i got home he was "swimming" in one spot facing downwards, i turned the aquarium light on, and tapped on the glass he jolted all around the aquarium and started to swim in circles, upside down, sideways, is there a cure for this type of illness? i've had him for almost 5months now i don't want him to die off. more

Resolved Question: Sick Goldfish Please Help?

I have a 1 inch goldfish. I don't know what kind it is it's just one of those 49 cent cheap goldfish you get t petco. It lives in a 1 gallon aquarium with an air pump, artificially colored gravel substrate, 2 artificial plants, a fish only sign, and a shark with it's mouth open. Yesterday I found it curled up in the sharks mouth. When I tapped on the glass it started swimming out of control. So I took him out of the tank and put him in a plastic cup with new water and I added water conditioner. I could see he was doing better already. I thought he might have swim bladder so I fed him peas. I wasn't sure if he ate them but he got completely better and he was swimming around fine in the cup so I did a complete change. I dumped everything out. I scrubbed the tank. Rinsed the rocks. Cleaned inside the air pump with a sponge. Rinsed the artificial decor. I cleaned everything completely. I put cold water in the tank with conditioner and put him back in. I went in to check on him about 12 o'clock and he was begging for food. So I fed him a teeny tiny bit. I went to check on him about 3 o'clock and he was swimming funny (wasn't curled up). This was at night not day. I usually stay up this late. I awoke in the morning to find him curled up at the bottom of the tank like the other morning. I immediately took him out and put him in the cup and put cold water and conditioner same as last time and fed him peas. Didn't work . Now it's about 7 30 pm and he's and the bottom of the cup curled up. Not even tapping the cup would work. He wouldn't move. One thing I have noticed is his gills are puffing out and in like crazy. It's like he has gill hiccups. I've never seen his gills expand that much. Every 2 seconds they expand and close. At first I thought it was swim bladder but I haven't fed him anything but peas and he won't eat them. The first time I put him in the cup and he got better. Now he's doing worse. And i don't know what's up with his gills. Every one in a while his eyeballs act like their gonna pop out when his gills expand. Please help me. If you say he's going to die please explain why. I understand he's probably gonna die but what's the cause? I was thinking maybe the shark has something to do with it because both mornings he was in the shank or near it. He usually doesn't go in the shark so I knew somehing was wring he was trapped. more

Resolved Question: Cleaning Used Aquariums?

Just purchased two USED 55 gal. aquariums. One has what looks like hard water stains - it's a white film covering the glass and for some reason the sides & bottom of the interior has been spray painted, I'm assuming to give the illusion of sand. Is there any way to salvage this tank? I am familiar with the routine cleaning for an established freshwater tank, but this looks like it needs lots of help. The previous owner claimed to have torn it down today and has used it as a working aquarium - but it smells disgusting too. I definitely wouldn't want there to be some type of disease lingering and when I establish proper water levels all of my fish die. Any suggestions will surely help! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How do I cycle my new 20-gallon glass tank?

Okay, so I'm a beginner hobbyist who didn't understand that new aquariums needed to broken in with a process called the nitrogen cycle. I was misled by a pet store employee because he had told me all I needed was a Penguin filter, Prime Conditioner, and Tetra EasyBalance to get started and add fish after a day or two. I treated the 20-gallon tap water with Prime Conditioner and Tetra EasyBalance and installed the filter approximately 36 hours ago. I'm planning to get a much-needed submersible heater with 100 watts. Please tell me if there is a need for any other actions because I'm pretty sure I screwed something up. Additionally, it would be extremely helpful if you give me some accurate, expert advice of what to do next and how to cycle my new tank. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: What type of fish should I add to my saltwater aquarium?

I have a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium setup. The nitrates are close to zero, ammonia is at zero, PH fluctuates between 8.3-8.4, the salinity is at 1.024, i have adequate lighting, mechanical filtration good for 20 gallons, and biological filtration good for 50-70 gallons, the ALK is a little high... but I'm hoping it will regulate itself. I have two (2) of the Aqua Clear 30 gallon power heads... making for 60 gallons worth of wave-making and circulation... along with the agitation from the filters. The tank has been setup for about a month mow, and the live rock is growing stringy algae on it if you look closely, and the glass is now starting to get circular algae on it as well. I just put in two damsels about a week ago, and they look to be doing fine... except they like to hide under/in/behind the rocks. I also have a live sand bed in the tank that is about 1/6 of the whole tank (it's about 3" high). Would it be safe to start adding fish into the tank (besides Damsel)? Should I try coral? I know that coral is hard to keep... but I think I'm up for it... What fish would be good for starting? How/what would I fees them? Because the water circulation obliterates flakes... so what types of sinking food should I get? Thanks in advance for your help!I already own a tank with piranha in it.... for all you retards out there! more

Voting Question: My rat is acting strange... someone help!?

I just moved my little male rat Samson out of his wire cage (Which was tiny) into a 40 gallon fish tank. I bought the tank (used) and did not wash it out before I moved him in there to live. He had gotten out once since I got him his new cage, and possibly chewed up some lotion and the cord to my headphones, but he chews things all the time when he gets out. Tonight, I went in to check out him. He charged and JUMPED up at the glass, as if he were going to attack me! I opened the cage to check his food and water, and he bit me. He has NEVER bit me before. I was bleeding profusely from my index finger, and he didn't even hide when I tried to lift him, which is very not much like himself. I think the problem may be that I've been leaving the aquarium light on and not petting him as much as usual, or possibly that his water bottle was tilted sideways and he wasn't getting any water. When I offered the bottle to him, he drank for awhile, (I had gloves on, I was scared.) And then returned to sniff the place he bit my finger at through the glove. HELP!Well, thank you guys for the answers. I think I'm going to take him out and just relax with him for about an hour or so. I only got the glass cage for size, considering his cage was MUCH to small for a rat his size. I just was shocked when he bit me that hard, considering he'd never bit before.Figured it out. His problem, I assume, had nothing to do with his cage. However, after you guys told me the issue about tanks, I will not keep him in their anymore. The problem, I think, was that I switched his food from premium rat food, and started feeding him some little pellets (can't remember the brand) but it said that the food was for small rodents, which was questionable. I found some of his old food and slid a piece half way through the bars on his old cage, and he grabbed it without hesitation and yanked it through the bars and ran into his hut with it. I think that's what his deal was. :c Could explain his biting. I'm going to go to walmart tomorrow morning and start feeding him is old food, in his new tank (Which has ventalation, there are openings that are large enough for air, but small enough for him not to get through) Atleast until I can afford a new wire cage. I just spend 50 dollars on this one, and for one rat, I dunno if I can afford another quite yet. more
