Open Question: Can u guys tell me the most important details in this agriculture article?
TITLE = Progress on Vaccine for 'Ich,' Bane of Fish Farms and Home Aquarium Hobbyists ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2010) — Tests of the potential vaccine against "Ich" ― the dreaded "white-spot" disease that plagues fish in commercial fish farms, public aquariums, pet fish retail outlets, and home aquariums ― are raising hopes for finally controlling the disease, scientists reported at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS). ________________________________________ "Outbreaks of the parasitic disease caused by Ichthyophthirius (Ich) can result in losses of 50-100 percent of fish," Dehai Xu, Ph.D., said in presenting the results. "The disease is very common, and almost every home fish hobbyist has encountered it. Once the parasite infects fish, and starts growing in the skin, fins, and gills, there is no really effective treatment. Ich causes losses estimated at $50 million annually. It would be much better to prevent the disease." As an indication of the difficulty in treating Ich outbreaks, Xu used the example of an infection that strikes a commercial fish farming pond, which might have a surface area equal to 10 or 20 high school football fields. The typical treatment involves pouring in a solution of formaldehyde, a potentially toxic substance. Hundreds of gallons might be needed, and farmers might have to repeat the treatment several times. Even after treatment, the fish would be at risk of reinfection if they encountered the parasite again, he said. "To vaccinate against Ich, you would need much less medication, and it would not pose an apparent threat to the environment," Xu pointed out. "And you would need just one treatment to make the fish immune for life." Xu explained that efforts to develop an Ich vaccine have focused on use of so-called "trophonts," which are the infective stage of the Ich parasite's life cycle. Trophonts burrow into a fish's skin, fins, and gills, causing the white skin spots characteristic of the disease. Those efforts have been hindered, however, by gaps in scientific knowledge about how fish develop protective immunity to trophonts. Xu and colleagues, Drs. Phillip Klesius and Craig Shoemaker, who are with the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Auburn, Al., set out to fill those gaps. Their study evaluated influence of vaccine formulation and doses of vaccine on protective immunity of channel catfish against Ich. The results showed that vaccination with live Ich theronts and trophonts killed with high-frequency sound waves stimulated production of protective antibodies in the catfish. "This study demonstrated that vaccines against Ich induced protective immunity and could provide a unique solution to prevent this parasitic disease through vaccination," Xu said. "An Ich vaccine would have great impact by preventing the disease, minimizing loss of valuable fish and increasing profitability of aquaculture." Xu noted that the study was a small, laboratory-scale endeavor, with unsolved problems on the road ahead to a commercial vaccine. One, for instance, involves producing a large quantity of Ich antigen for the vaccine and then formulating a vaccine that can be easily administered to large numbers of fish in a "bath" or in food, rather than by injection. In the bath approach, fish would be kept in a container or an enclosure with water containing the vaccine. This study is within the component of ARS National Program 106-"Aquaculture" to improve health and welfare of aquatic animals. Xu and colleagues hope their study will bring more attention to the research to combat this disease. moreOpen Question: why is my dwarf gourami don't want to eat his tropical flakes?

Hopefully I might be getting a Syrian Hamster. ( If i get a girl I want to name her Nilla! ) I would adopt him/her from a guinea pig/hamster rescue. At the rescue they have cage set ups for sale, aquarium, hidey house, bowl, wheel, and water bottle w/ sand for 50$. (also includes aquarium lid and clip). Problem is I also live at my dad's house every other weekend. His house is under renovation right now but when it's done i'll have a room there. I know that hamsters can be left for about 2 days with food and water and my mom can change it if needed but i would really like to take him/her with me. My dad only lives 3 blocks away. ( Most likely won't be able to walk home) I wouldn't need a big cage but something safe and escape proof (or as Escape proof as possible). I was thinking about getting the habitrail ovo and the ovo carrying case. That way i can have a carrying case and an addition to his other cage. Problem is, I haven't heard great things about it . What do you think, would it be an ok cage for a day or 2 at a time? Do you have any other good cage ideas? Any carrying case ideas? Thanks for all the help! P.S if you have pictures of a unique cage, such as a decorated cage i would totally appreciate a link! moreOpen Question: Keeping a freshwater jellyfish?
Can I keep a freshwater jellyfish in a rectangular aquarium, provided that I create currents that will keep it from getting stuck in the corners? Also, how much filtration and aeration does a jellyfish need? What kind of plants can I put in with it? UVA bulbs or UVB bulbs for lighting? How much do they eat? Can I have feeding times, or does food need to be constantly available? Do they need to be kept in groups, or are they fine on their own? As for the legality of keeping a freshwater jellyfish as a pet, I've already asked, and it's fine. I'd just like to have something set up for it before I bring it home.Any books you can recommend? moreOpen Question: Can aquarium snails carry a disease?
I just got 2 baby snails from a pet shop, they gave them to me for free because "they just come on the plants (living plants) and we don't even want them". so I'm wondering if they may have been carrying something and the pet shop people didn't tell me, after i got them my Betta got sick, at first i thought it was just the cold, but then he got like, fungus on him earlier today, i got some stuff to help off my gf, but it was to late, i just cam home and he was dead. moreOpen Question: Are the trays under the gravel necessary in an aquarium?
We're setting everything back up after a major flood in our home. It looks like we lost a bunch of stuff out of our 50 gallon aquarium. Are the trays that go under the gravel necessary? I can't find them on online aquarium stores. moreResolved Question: Name that tropical fish?
My friend and I were at Mall of America's Underwater World and we saw an interesting fish we'd never seen before in the tropical aquarium section. Unfortunately we couldn't find any label telling us what this fish was. This fish has a unique "boot stamp"-like plate on top of its head that we found amusing. It was long and torpedo shaped, and black with white stripes along its body. Its fins had an awkward placing that would make the fish look at home right-side up or upside down. Anybody know what this fish was? moreOpen Question: Do Tiger Barbs loose their stripes when stressed?
My young lad choose a few Tiger Barbs to add to his aquarium, while at the store their color looked brilliant. Arriving home we were unbelievably surprised to see each of them had lost ALL of their stripes!!! It was within the next hour after floating them, then releasing them into the tank we could literally watch their color reappear before our eyes!!! Is it common for them to loose their stripes when stressed? They have all since adjusted with no further signs of concern. :) (Not sure if its relative or not but upon leaving the store with the fish in hand, there was a bit of commotion in the street with the police pulling over someone nearby, and we were jarred around a little as a passerby shoved out of the way, then we're a 20 minute drive from town.) moreVoting Question: What's the difference in these two products and do they both help to reduce algae and keep the tank cleaner?
What's the difference in these two products and do they both help to reduce algae and keep the tank cleaner? Informed answers only please! Please don't answer unless you know of a particular condition. "Take him to the Vet" is unacceptable. I take in orphaned kittens and bottle feed them....usually without any problems I can't handle, but I picked up one recently who's shaking like a leaf! He is about 7-10 days old, barely has his eyes open and was found in someones trash can. I thought he was cold, but he does this in a warm towel, IN a small tall aquarium, over a heating pad which keeps his little quarantine tank at 82 degrees. He had dermatitis over 1/2 of his body so I've been giving him .2cc of clavamox twice daily (which after 4 days is now clearing up the skin) so any fever he may have had to begin with is now passed. He's urinating & defecating like a normal kitten, eating normally, but STILL shaking all over. He's not unhappy, he even purrs while he's shaking sometimes. The only time this stops is when he sleeps. I'm feeding a home made formula of: 1 can evaporated milk, 1 can water, 4 tablespoons Just Born Dry Kitten milk (for the colostrum), 1 tsp canola oil, 1 tsp corn syrup, 6 drops liquid pet vitamins, 6 drops Children's Mylecon (to help with gas), and 1 egg yoke. I shake all this up and use between all the bottle feeding kittens for 1 day.---Never had a problem with it. What could be wrong with this kitten? moreResolved Question: I have EMERGENCY questions on my new hamster?
She/ he.. (The store owners couldn't tell :/) is a teddy bear hamster. I have her in a ten gallon aquarium.. With a wheel, a wateer bottle, a hut, and a litter thingy. Oh, and a chewstick... She came right up to my hand in the petstore, and they let you interact with the animals a bit and this one was sweet(: So her water bottle may need replacing, because It fell. I came home after I had put her in her cage and went to the grocery store, and the water bottle had fallen. I put it back up and secured it better, and then as I was watching her for a few minutes she climbed onto the top of the hut. :/ Then she went to the 1-1 1/2 inch space between the water bottle and the top of the cage.. Obbviously she was trying to get out, and she fell and I was scared! And then she did it about 3 more times, and she has been digging at the glass. She was with other hamsters, and when we put her in her new cage, it was almost as if she was looking for them... I KNOW hamsters shouldn't be together. But it looked like she was looking for something. So I moved the water bottle and put tape at the corners to hold the top down and also where the top was a liiiiiitle loose I put a but of extra tape. DON'T WORRY, she can still breathe... And do you have any ideas in case she still tries to get out? In at least a few weeks, maube later, I will be getting some money and can buy a really good 30 dollar cage that is huuuge(: SO if size is an issue I am already trying to fix that... :/ moreVoting Question: I need help with my saltwater aquarium?
I bought an aquarium from a yard sale and they said it was all ready to go....I got it home and have no idea how to set up the filtration system...the brand says supra?? Which of the following is the best example of a scientific model? a) A group of zoo monkeys to represent behavior in a natural environment. b) A computer simulation of earth's climate changes c) an x-rays showing multiple fractures in a bone d) a salt-water aquarium in the home of fish enthusiast Which one is it? Please and thank-you so much! Please no guessing, I really don't get this moreResolved Question: Was this chick telling the truth, do y'all agree with her?
My kid and I found a little baby seahorse in some seaweed on the beach. It was still alive so we put it in a bucket and brought it home. We got a saltwater tank but we bought another littler one special for the seahorse and put him in it, and then we went to this aquarium shop a couple towns over to get some food for it cause everybody says to feed it mysis and Pet Supermarket don't carry that here. Well the chick at this store was all pissy with us telling us that we should have left the seahorse on the beach to get eaten up by the seagulls cause taking it was wrong somehow (it ain't illegal here, so I don't know what she meant) and that even taking water out of the Atlantic Ocean to put in the tank was bad for the environment or some **** like that. I don't think that big old ocean is going to suffer if I take ten gallons of water out of it. I think she was bitchy cause she sells seahorses and big jugs of saltwater at her store and she was hoping for a bigger sale than just some $4 frozen shrimp. What do y'all think. And by the way I don't believe in taking fish off reefs or anything like that but this guy was sitting on the beach in the hot sun, it ain't like he would have lived. Not to mention I don't see anybody bitching at the people who fish off the beach and kill the fish and eat it neither. But putting it in a tank is some kind of mortal sin apparently. If I was to throw it back in the water, it would instantly be eaten by the other fish that live at the beach here. The only way I could put it "back" would be to take a boat and drive it all the way out to the Gulfstream and put it in the sargassum there and even then, it would probably get eaten in a few hours. So if it's going to die either way, I'd rather it die in my house well fed and warm than being devoured by a barracuda. And I ain't crazy, that chick just pissed me off, the ****** con artist.Tornados, you want me to let it die? Sorry I don't work that way. They don't eat brine shrimp it'll eventually kill them I know cause I've had it happen. He's got stuff to hang onto. If he dies he'll have lived a lot longer than he would have had I left him on the beach or thrown him into the water right there.Oh yea and there ain't no difference in the filter cartridges they sell for marine and freshwater aquariums. You either stupid or you're workin for one of them shops that likes to bullshit people and rip them off.IAN: HELL YEA, what the **** is wrong with these idiots. It's ok if you buy it from their shop where they imported it from China but not if you rescue it from the beach? Bullshit! Thanks Kat you alright. sorry I know look like a crazy nut adding all this **** on here. And Tornado yea yea yea... did you notice they SELL "special marine filters" on that same site?I've had fish (saltwater and freshwater) all my life.Tornado, I appreciate you lookin into it so much like you done but I can't pick you as BA cause your immediate first reaction was to side with that hideous ***** at the pet shop and tell me I should have left the seahorse to die on the beach. I could never do something like that. moreVoting Question: Is my Pink Toed Tarantula dying?

Alright, well, Im getting a hamster in the next 3 weeks, so i've been looking at cages. Even before I got permission to get a hamster, I have always wanted a fish tank with a tank topper. But when I went to look at the cages, I noticed the Habitrail OVO loft. My mom *really* wants me to get the loft more than an aqaurium, because she likes it better. I'll admit, its not as small as it looks, but im afraid it will still not be enough room, even if I get add-ons. Also, the add-ons scare me a bit. They look small, hard-to clean, and im not even sure if the hamster could climb something like this: http://www.habitrail.com/ovo/eng/products/set_adventure.php?color=pink The loft itself costs 70 dollars and will cost more with add-ons, but the fish tank costs 100 and I will have to buy a tank-topper. So, what do you think: Fish tank with some sort of tanktopper: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/184-4183774-6105239?ASIN=B0006IUL64&AFID=Froogle&LNM=B0006IUL64|My_First_Home_10_Gallon_Tank_Topper&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B0006IUL64&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001 Or Habitrail OVO loft: http://www.habitrail.com/ovo/eng/products/habitats_loft.php?color=pink with an add-on.And do you think those syrians will be able to climb those straight up tubes? Thanks to all the answers so far. My concerns are pretty much that the rubes will be too small when the syrian is fully grown and that the wheel is too small, and there is no room for a regular sized syrian wheel. This syrian hamster seems to fit in fine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRweqeFBOKA moreResolved Question: how large of a pond do i need to keep a gar in? length, width, height in feet?

so we bought a turtle on craigs list to be a classroom pet for my mom. lol and the ppl said that it was a eastern painted turtle. Well we took it home and did research on it..and we found out that its actually a red eared slider and needs a 120 gallon tank!!!!! Stupid craigs list hillbillies....grrrrrrr. So now we are stuck with this poor turtle who has been living in a 10 gallon aquarium his whole entire life and is 6 in long. We have a 50 gallon tank but my mom said no beacause its wayyyy to big to bring anywhere. So then i suggested getting a pre formed pond but that really wont work because its going to be in my moms classroom. So we have a 40 gallon tank and i know that is WAYY too small but i always take him outside during the day and let him crawl in the grass and swim in the kiddie pool. So will the 40 be ok for the time being? PLEASE dont criticize me. Im doing my besti CANT use the 50 moreResolved Question: My brother's goldfish passed something odd?
A few months ago our town had a carnival, and my brother won a goldfish on the ring toss. We refused to buy him a tiny plastic carnival tank or a bag of cruddy carnival fish food, however, and he's been living in a 3-gallon fish bowl with a bit of gravel on the bottom and an "Oriental Castle" from PetSmart. Every Tuesday we change his water and add a bit of aquarium salt and some water neutralizer. It's never murky by then, but any longer and it will be. Yesterday my brother saw something odd coming out of his rear. He thought it was a tumor but my dad passed it off as some poop. I agreed. It didn't look serious. When we got home from school supplies shopping, the "poop" was gone. Swimming close to the surface of the bowl, though, was something that looked like a bug. It wasn't a baby goldfish because it looked nothing like a fish. It looks like this: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/Arthropoda/CrustaceanPIX/branchiuran%20wwm.jpg Should we be looking forward to flushing the poor fish? moreResolved Question: MY NEW FISH TANK WITH A GOLDFISH(HELP)?

For background, I have a divided 5gal tank with a Betta on each side; Murderfish and Fishby. Well, my worst nightmare just happened. I woke up this morning and surprise, the divider in my 5gal Betta tank was fallen down and Fishby's back fin was torn to shreds. While I go to the pet supply to get aquarium glue to cement that sucker up for good, I was wondering how to properly treat Fishby. I have moved him to a "medication" tank of his own and given him some Stress Coat. Any other medicine or home remedies I might try? He doesn't appear to have any flesh wounds, just his ripped fin. Should I keep the water warmer than usual, or the same? I have a 180gal saltwater, would a bit of the salt I use for it be ok for him? Murderfish looks just fine, by the way (his name didn't come from this incident). I can't be mad at him; it's just his instincts. Trust me, he's my first Betta and still my favorite.I asked the salt question because I have been keeping all kinds of fish, fresh and salt (Jack Dempseys being my favorite) and I am new to betta keeping. Thank you!Thank you all for the advice, you would think I'd know how to deal with wounds after years of cichlid tanks! moreResolved Question: Help with a chemistry experiment?
Hi, I'm currently doing a chemistry experiment for my Assignment. We have to find an experiment that includes extracting a certain substance and I chose to extract Magnesium. I've found an experiment already but it leaves me with Magnesium Chloride instead of pure Magnesium. Please Help, I'm desperate! I don't mind if you give me a new experiment or just give me ways on how to extract the chloride from the magnesium, I just need this A.S.A.P.! Please help! This is my current experiment: Magnesium (Mg) exists in sea water as ions of magnesium. It's typically extracted from sea water on an industrial scale in a procedure known as the Dow Process. Magnesium chloride is used in the manufacture of fire-resistant materials, paper and textiles. It's also a common dicing agent and a precursor in the production of magnesium metal Step 1: Add slaked lime [Ca(OH2)] to sea water. The magnesium ions (Mg) in the sea water will combine with the slaked lime to form magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] and calcium. Magnesium hydroxide is a solid that will fall to the bottom of the solution as a precipitate and the calcium will remain in the solution as ions. The following equation shows this reaction: Mg + Ca(OH)2 ' Mg(OH)2 + Ca. Step 2: Separate the magnesium hydroxide from the sea water and add two moles of hydrochloric acid (HCl) for every mole of magnesium hydroxide. This reaction will form a solution of magnesium chloride in water. The following equation shows this reaction: Mg(OH)2 + 2 HCl ' MgCl2 + 2 H2O. Step 3: Add four moles of water to the magnesium chloride solution for every mole of magnesium chloride. The following equation shows this reaction: MgCl2 + 2 H2O + 4 H20 ' MgCl2 + 6H20. Step 4: Allow this solution to crystallize as magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2.6H20). Step 5: Store magnesium chloride as magnesium chloride hexahydrate. Pure magnesium chloride is difficult to store because it absorbs water extremely readily. Magnesium chloride hexahydrate may be dehydrated to magnesium chloride when needed by exposing it to hydrogen chloride gas How to make seawater Home uses of seawater include such things as aquariums, holistic treatments and agriculture. Seawater is inexpensive and simple to produce. According to the Seafriends Marine Conservation and Education Center, seawater is a combination of salts mixed with water and gases. While the composition of seawater varies by geographic location, mixing sea salt with tap water most accurately duplicates it at home. Sea salt contains minerals directly from the sea and tap water contains abundant natural minerals like calcium. Step 1: Determine the quantity of seawater you wish to produce. Step 2: Pour the tap water into a mixing container that is large enough to accommodate the quantity of seawater you are making. Allow the water to settle for approximately 10 minutes and come to room temperature. Step 3: Add the sea salt to the water, stirring slowly until completely dissolved. According to Sir Francis Drake High School, you will need approximately 35 grams of sea salt per liter of water or approximately 4 oz. of sea salt per gallon of waterThis is not what I'm giving in, the teacher wanted the specific method, we didn't have to change anything about it. The report will we written separately. moreResolved Question: What happened my Pleco?

Hi, I was wondering how many gallons I'd need to keep these fish: 1 Koran Angel, 1 Blue Damsel 1 Green Chromis 1 Watchman Goby 1 Violet Goby 1 Coral Beauty Angel 1 False Percular Clownfish 1 Royal Gramma 1 Male Square Anthias 1 Copperland Butterfly Fish 1 Clown Surgeon 1 Regal Blue Tang (Dory Fish) 4/5 Cleaner Shrimp O.k, I'm aware that that is a lot of fish for a home aquarium, so.... 1. Please could you tell me how many gallons I'd need for them (regardless of how many) 2. Tell me if I'd need to change the numbers of each fish so they'd be happier, and also if any wouldn't get along. 3. Give me some smaller stocking ideas for a smaller aquarium, revolving around the fish above. However, the Clownfish must be in there, and it would be good if the Royal Gramma, Blue Damsel and Green Chromis were in there too. I know I'm asking quite a bit, so I'll REALLY appriciate any Good answers which fullfil the criteria. Thanks so much = ]Sorry, I meant to put 2 False Percular Clownfish - They obviously like to be in Pairs.Oh, and I would put a lot of Live Rock in there too (as much as I could afford). If I could, maybe some of the easiest to keeo corals too. Would 200-250 gallons work? moreResolved Question: Aquarium safe glue for hood light bulb?
The swirly thingy inside the aquarium hood that holds the light bulb came off with the bulb. I found the light bulb sitting outside of it on the cover this morning. I can't take it back to the store because it comes with the aquarium and I do not want to redo my fish's home. What kind of glue could I use (that I could by from a store, not online) that is safe for putting the swirly thing back in it's place? I can't use the light or the hood till I do so.Thank you! :) moreResolved Question: Goldfish tank water brown, gold fish sick?
I'm a cat lover and never had interest in fish keeping. My cat brought home a live but injured goldfish just over two years ago. I rescued it, but it can't go back to a pond because of its injuries. (It lost a lot of gut through a hole in its belly, and now it excretes through the hole and doesn't get bigger because it's underfed, but I hate to kill it because otherwise it seems quite happy.) I bought a second fish to keep it company and a 20 litre tank, on the advice of the local aquarium shop. I have gravel, no plants, a pump filter containing charcoal, and I replace the charcoal every month, the filter when it starts to break up. I rinse the filter in pond water every week to keep it clean, and I replace about 5 litres of the water. Last summer someone else's cat caught a third gold fish and I was black mailed into taking it - threat of it being eaten by the finder's Koi Carp otherwise. Now I read that my tank is criminally too small for the poor fishes, but no one will re-home them for fear of infections. Not only is the water filthy and brown despite repeated treatment with something from the fish store, but the fish are now lethargic, not feeding and two out of the three have big sores on their rear flanks in the same place. The biggest of the three doesn't have any sores....... I think he is attacking the two smaller fish. I put medication in the tank, but to use the water cleaner and the medication the charcoal has to come out. Is it okay to do a daily 20% water change? I don't mind doing that since the fish go lively again when there's fresh water, even though it stays brown. I use a water conditioner from the fish store, and never put in untreated tap water. I let it stand overnight to be the same temperature too. I would like to rehome the two larger fish and keep the disabled one, maybe with a companion of a species that won't grow big. I can't euthanise her after two years, just because she's making extra work for me, but clearly three fish, two of which have doubled their size in a year, to over three inches long, is far too much for a 20 litre tank. moreResolved Question: Have Pets at Home mis-sold me my tank?
I bought a 20 litre tank from Pets at Home a few months ago, http://www.petsathome.com/shop/corner-20-litre-aquarium-by-pets-at-home-(available-in-store-only)-36895 since then all the fish I buy have kept dying. I left the tank running and then got 2 fan tail goldfish, as advised by the store. They told me my tank would be suitable for 2 fish. The first one got swim bladder as soon as I got it home so I returned it and got a replacement. I tested the water and the ph and nitrates were fine, so thought I was OK. The original one then died, then the replacement. So thinking I was just unlucky went and got just another one. Sure enough 1 week later this one has died. After reading all the advise one here it looks like I should never have put these fish in the tank, its too small. Am I right? If this is the case why have I been told on 2 seperate occasions by 2 different members of staff that the tank was OK for the 2 fish. Have I been mis-sold the tank, would you take it back? I told them I only wanted to keep simple goldfish so my 8 yr old daughter could look after them easily. Recently I asked a question about websites on iguana care. Well, I realize that iguanas get really big and as much as I want one my aunt said that I couldn't have one if it wasn't going to stay in a habitat. My room is hardly big enough to call a habitat for a fully grown iggy and I don't want to restrict a massive lizard to a small home. I would feel horrible. So does anyone have any ideas as to a reptile pet that is smaller, would be fine staying in a tank or cage, and doesn't need much maintenance. I have to work and go to school. I would want to handle it some but I can't let it free roam. Does anyone have any ideas of a good pet for me?I'm also not a fan of feeding something another animal... so probably not a snake unless there's some magical breed of vegetarian snake out there. moreResolved Question: Do you like the glass aquarium end tables?
My husband really wants an aquarium table. I wouldn't want to get a coffee table like this but I thought an end table might do. Do you think this will look good next to a beige sectional sofa? I just got this beautiful honey sunset gourami today at petsmart. I brought it home, let it accumulate, and released it to my tropical tank. Now for some reason, it's just above the aquarium floor. I'm thinking its shy or something. It eats well, and swims well. but its at the bottom of the tank. None of the other fishes seem to bother it or the gourami doesn't seem to bother the other fishes. This is a none aggressive gourami. So can anyone tell me whats the problem? moreResolved Question: How much should I ask for a 55 gallon aquarium?
I found a 55 gallon aquarium on craigslist. It's a $150 tank but it comes everything. "Looking to sell my 55 gallon fish tank, it's in great condition, no leaking or cracks! I'm just tired of taking care of it and looking for a good home for all my equipment! Tank has a 6 month old Emperor 400 filter, heater, bubble wand inside. Some real plants on the terra cotta pots, they multiply well and are hearty. All items seen are included: stand, decorations in tank plus extras, water test kit, 2 cleaning siphons, pH drops, 2 algae scrapers, l timer for lights/outlet, food - including algae wafers, auto timed feeder, filter carbon pebbles, ammo chips, plant food, aquarium salt, water conditioner, 3 nets, 3 brushes, 2 extra filter cartridges. Open to offers, I have spent a ton of money on extras so that is why I'm asking so much!" This is what the listing description said. Please Help! Thanks moreResolved Question: My new Cory doesn't seem to be healthy, any ideas?
I have a 180 liter (approx. 48 gallon) cycled aquarium. I have 3 Pitbull Plecos and 4 Pearl Gouramis (2 of each sex). Today I wanted to add a school of Corydoras. I went to my usual fish shop, which I've never had any problems with. The guy there said it would be fine to have 2 different types of Corys, 3 each to make a school of 6. So I bought 3 Panda Corys and 3 Leopards. I got them home and carefully adjusted them to the tank before releasing them. 5 of the Corys are doing wonderful. They already made themselves at home. They are swimming around everywhere on the bottom, checking out the sunken pirate ship and live plants and even ate a good meal tonight. But 1 of the Leopards doesn't seem right. He won't join the rest of the group. He hides out in the corner not moving much. He won't eat anything. He also did a very strange thing, he swam to the surface and then sort of rolled around in circles back to the bottom of the tank. I checked my water levels and everything is fine. So what could be wrong with this little guy? I already e-mailed the fish shop and I'm waiting for a reply back. But in the meantime, I thought I would ask here. Thanks!Well, the little guy passed away a few hours later. The fish shop replaced him for free and the new one is doing just fine. I guess he was just weak or ill. Too bad :( moreResolved Question: why are my baby mouse's eyes are not open yet?
We found a family of field mice in an air compressor that had over wintered. well we found them after we turned on the air compressor. there is a rotating wheel in the side that is covered and they thought it would be a nice place to put a home. sadly enough it killed all of them except for one. It is the cutest thing ever, it had only a few minor cuts on its belly when the others were cut to pieces. i felt so horrible about what happened, i took the baby inside and put him in a spare aquarium with a heating mat and a warm light. i have been feeding him formula and he seems to be doing good, except i noticed that he had started to grow teeth but his eyes weren't open yet. I also realized that he did not respond to sound. when i found him he was dehydrated but other than that he seemed healthy. is it normal for them not to be able to hear at a young age? I think he is about 2 weeks old, he is eating, pooping and peeing like normal, but i am worried he will not be able to hear or see. will he be able to survive as a pet? Please help PS: (this is not really him) Here is a picture of about how old he is: http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/mouse%20by%20e3000.jpg moreVoting Question: Dwarf hamster cage help?
Ok so I plan to get a Dwarf hamster. I'm not sure what gender. I'm going to use carefresh natural bedding. I plan to get the SAM Tasmania home, no not the dingo, jackeroo, etc, those are the smaller units I plan to buy the Tasmania which is bigger. Here's the link, I've asked some other questions concerning hamsters and mentioned which cage I'm going to get and a lot of people have said it doesn't have proper ventilation. Is this true? I plan to buy a tube and attach it to one of the upper holes where the bubble cap is and add a nest. Are the cages that bad? Will it really suffocate the hamster? I've read the reviews saying it was amazing! And I've read reviews saying it was terrible. Which is true? They wouldn't sell it if it really kills the hamsters would they? The reason I don't want a bar cage is my sister had one and was killed by the bars. And the reason I don't want a aquarium/glass cage is I have a cat and I want to attach tubes and accessories to the cage. My sister had a superpet bar cage and it died and so did my brother and it died of bar injury as well so I really don't want one of those. Also both my brother and sisters hamsters easily escaped from bother models of superpet cages. I've taken care of my friends SAM cage which was the smallest version and it was easy to clean and I loved it however I couldn't tell if the hamster loved it. I really like the down and under feature my friends hamster made underground tunnels in it. Would removing one of the bubble caps on the top help with ventilation? I'm pretty sure my cat couldn't get it through the top hole but could the hamster escape through a hole that high? Eventually I plan to buy another unit and attach it to the current one.Sorry the links not working here's another one you can try, mog&hl=en&gl=us&client=safari&q=SAM%20Tasmanian%20hamster%20cage#i=1If that link doesn't work please please just google images search "SAM Tasmanian hamster cage"Ok so I read I review saying that if you connect just a small cage to it that is extremely well ventilated such as a carrier or cage with lots of air it helps because they can die from their ammonia in their urine. Is this true and will this help? If so can you suggest one my budget for the cage Aline without bedding food etc. is 50 dollars and the cage is about 35 so 15 dollars moreResolved Question: HELP HELP HELP WITH GUPPY FISH PLEASE!!!?

PLease help! This afternoon we went swimming and found a frog in the pool. We brought the poor thing home and he's in a tank (It's perfect for a frog) as we are going to get 3 baby RES tomorrow. We'll change him into a 10 gallon aquarium, but this is for right now. Should we let him go? He's shedding, I guess the chlorine hurt him from being in there too long. Should we keep him and try to help him? We've owned many frogs, but not ones that were in a pool for this long it looks like. Please help! Thanks!=DI just don't want him to die=( Is there anything we can do?He was stuck IN the pool, where they check the chlorine. (In like this chamber thing). We are letting him go, I was asking this as I just didn't want him to die. moreResolved Question: which hamster cage for 2 ROBOROVSKI HAMSTERS?
hey, recently i got a pair of robos, to go with my 2 syrians, and i thought that i would get them a "proper" cage for my birthday. well, they are in a large plastic box - they are very happy btw. well ventilated aswell. so i thought...a fishtank...or a proper hamster cage. some pics. Hagen LivingWorld Small Pet Home Exercise Dome (THE HAMSTER CAGE) Pros - Very big, similar size to rat cage (my syrians are in one each), looks very nice, not tacky, and comes with accessories, and they can climb the bars. but idunno if they're climbers. maybe more "diggers"... cons - not sure about wooden floors - may have to give layer or two of non toxic clear paint, so they dont pee straight onto the wood and it would be easier to clean. they are not chewers. they are escape artists lol :L so am worried about bars. it says "suitable for adult dwarf hamsters"...well for a start robos are the smallest of hamsters. secondly they are not the first pair of robos im gonna get in my life. and its not as sturdy and good as a rat cage, yet same price!, price is ridiculous. £50. but if its better for the hamsters... and of course, a pic of it... http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/rodents/cages/hamster_mouse_cages/hamster_cages/40877#more Fish Tank (the one i'd buy if i got one) pros - very easy to see and take photos of them - considering they're robos and i will not be handling them nearly as much as my syrians, easy to clean, impossible to escape out of. i can pile up woodshavings so they can dig and burrow. they love doing that. saves me getting a "digging tower" (by trixie if u dunno what it is) cons - cannot climb bars - but i dunno if they actually like it, since they've been in a glass tank in pets at home, then bought home and put in a plastic box. hmm... ..... and not as big as the hamster cage. expensive for a fish tank. £33!!! not including the mesh lid which i'll have to buy to keep them in it.... and is heavy. no handles to carry. and more difficult to clean out as is heavy. with the hamster cage the whole like cage lifts up so you just empty the base. oh, some pics - http://www.petsathome.com/shop/aquarium-by-clearseal-(available-in-store-only)-36345 if you go on the size select thing its the second one in the list, i think it says 30x15x12. big enough. and i dont wanna go any bigger because its longer - and i've no room at all for any longer!! So... i'm stuck. i've pros and cons for both!! and yes, i have considered a gerbil cage but bars of gerbil cage way too big for robos and they'd escape. plus gerbil cage even heavier, and i've run out of room lol - 3 cages!!! please dont say "fish tank" becuz its cheaper, or "hamster cage" cus it says the word "hamster" on it therefore its suitable, and a fishtank is not suitable because its not ddesigned for hamsters, its designed for fish, cus thats not true. and give reasons for your answer :) thanks oh - an idea of what the finished fish tank would look like... and its the fish tank i would get if i got a fish tank lol... this. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290464269242&_trksid=p2759.l1259 cool, huh? and yeah, i'm not gonna get that wooden top. they sell mesh ones too :)ok - i haven't made myself clear enough - i have no rats. lol. i have 2 syrian hamsters, they are in a rat cage EACH lol, they've hardly even met XD the 2 robos arre going in the cage :) moreResolved Question: Gold gourami missing a feeler?
Today I went to my very trusted aquarium store (where I buy 90% of my fish) and bought some gouramis for my fairly empty 55 gallon tank. When I got home I noticed I was given a gold gourami who was short one "feeler" if that's what they're called. He's just a baby. I know he will survive, but what are his chances of growing it back and is there any way for me to increase his chances/ speed up the process? I'm very obsessive about the apperance of my fish and don't want him to be one feelered forever. And how long will it take? moreResolved Question: Can anyone help me with my betta?
I have a year old female betta. I recently moved from my home on the east coast to my new apartment in Tx. I want to make her a good home in my new home. Right now she is staying in the container I transported her in with my old aquarium filter attached to the side to help cycle water once a day for 10 min. She seems happy in her dark corner but I wish to make her a better home. I have extra space on my new counters at my apartment and I was thinking of making a replica of a rice patty for her. Some rice paddies are 15 cm (5.6in) deep. I was thinking of getting a 6 to 10in deep, and 12 in long dish to keep her in with some aquarium gravel and Java moss/ferns and a few rocks for her to swim around. The only problem I'm coming up with is not being able to find a good filter system for that setup. If anyone can think of one that does not go in the gravel of the aquarium that would be very helpful. I want to give her a good home that will help her be less stressed and feel at home. Also any other ideas on good plants, rocks, gravel, ETC. to put with her to make her a happy little fish would make me a very happy fish owner. Please do cite a source.I'm a college student and do not have a lot of money. The settup I came up with is very cheep as my friends have everything for me but the filter and the tank I'd like to use. I have a ten gallon but I do not wish to put her back in there as my fancy guppies fins are not going to make it with her playful nipping. moreResolved Question: Why do my fish keep dying?
I recently set up a heated freshwater aquarium and waited 1 day for it to settle, I went to pets at home and purchased high resistant fish and was told they would probably die. They Did and I then went to a fish specific shop and was told to check the water. I was then told there was to much alkaline in the water and was given ph07 to balance it out, and was told to wait a few days check the water again and if the water was ok then I could purchase more fish. I took a sample of water to the shop and told I could add fish, which I did and then they died. Is there something else that the shop should have told me or am I doing something wrong? I feed them on a morning and night and have the aquarium light on for 10 - 12 hours as I have live plants in the tank moreResolved Question: i went to petsmart and talked to the guy about getting a goldfish. they had on display a tank.?
its from aqueon, and its a 5 galllon goldfish desktop aquarium kit. he told me that it would be my best choice and would be a happy home for a goldfish. i brought it home, put the rocks/plants/shipwreck in it with the water, put in the conditioner, and turned on the filter. the next day i went back and got a calico fantail goldfish (one that is displayed on the back of the box), and put it in its new happy home... here i am, after a month of him in his happy home (i did 25% water changes twice a week) with a goldfish gasping for air at the top and hiding at the bottom not eating. i looked this up to find that my fish has been poisioned with ammonia, and that its tank should be no smalller than 10 gallons... why do they have an Aqueon minibow 5 goldfish aquarium kit that is the perfect place for my goldfish to play (as stated on the box), when it is going to kill my poor godfish!? and the guy at the petstore told me he would be happy... is there anything more i can do with this tank? i cant take it back now... but im not very interested in a betta fish which i know would be a good choice for this tank. i just wanted a happy aquarium... help? moreVoting Question: i bought a new aquarium about a month ago for a goldfish.?
its an aqueon minibow 5 goldfish aquarium kit. after doing my research, i learned that goldfish should be kept in no less then a 10 gallon tank. but when i got this tank home and filled it up, it looked like there was much more water then i expected. i put in a fantail goldfish and a plecostomus to keep it kind of clean. everything has worked out pretty great other than a little bit too much ammonia once. frank and elvis are starting to look a little lonely in that tank all by themselves... i have some fake plants and a shipwreck in there for them to play with, but it seems like they are very happy and have plenty of space to swim.... i was thinking maybe i could get another small fish. is this okay? and if so, what should i get that would be safe moreResolved Question: Why all store-bought plecostomus come home sick?
I buy plecostomus and then they hide in the aquarium until they die. I clean and test the water regularly. Some of my fish--mostly Tetras-- have been with me forever! I have tried feeding the plecos algae wafers, boiled zucchinis and bottom feeder foods, and still they don't survive. moreVoting Question: Why does one of my cat kill, while the other brings home live animals?
My older cat who is about 6 or 7 brings home killed animals like baby bunnies and plays with mice till they are dead. So why does my younger cat who is about a year old bring home live animals? She's caught shrews and brought one home alive and yesterday she brought home a frog, today she just brought in another frog. Both alive, so I put them in a 50 gallons aquarium I have with my hermit crabs. He doesn't eat them. He just brings them home dead most the time. But why does one kill them, the other just watches them and doesn't kill them. moreVoting Question: Will this be O.K. for a while? Betta in 2.5 gal tank?
OK lets shoot this. My LIL bros friend love pets, and bugs. He has a Betta. In a McDonald's coffee cup. I have several interesting bugs that I would gladly trade for his Betta. He is into poisonous bugs so I am trying to catch this black widow that is my garage. Just had to give info. Besides after the cup the tank would be heavenHe has this tank but it is broken. He doesn't wnat to pay the tank priceupgrading 2 5 gallons moreResolved Question: Cichlid popeye? (reposted)?
I had to repost this because I was having issues with the picture links. ok I had 2 blue ram cichlids. They were never what you'd call, active. Usually they'd be in or behind the cichlid cave and would never really emerge from their cave until the lights were off after I'd place their food in the aquarium. Then they'd swim out to eat. Well... I went out of town and put a family friend in charge of cleaning my aquariums... and needless to say when I got home my fish looked like they were only fed but the tanks were never cleaned. There was algae on the walls and gravel, there were signs of overfeeding and so on. I noticed one of my blue rams was missing... and my other one has a growth over its eye... like a cloudy bubble. I immediately did a water change, vaccumed the gravel, cleaned off the decorations, and then added Maracyn cause my first thought waz popeye. Should I be concerned of anything harmful to humans? I normally clean my tanks without wearing gloves. I've kept tanks for a long time and have never had anything worse than an ick outbreak. http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae36/Aravyndra/ normal.jpg http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae36/Aravyndra/ poppedeye.jpg (you'll have to cut and paste the links. I want your opinion on pet stores. i can see how you can be truely upset about pet stores that dont take care of their animals but not all pet stores are horrible. I just got a baby dutch bunny about 3 weeks ago. and i got him from jacks aquarium and pets. i heard that many people say they abuse their pets but i dont think so. when i got my little baby bunny they had him in a cage all to himself with plenty of food and water and they used care freash bedding ( the good kindd ) and they made sure i researched about the bunnies ( which i did .. i did about 4 months of research ) and they seemed to take very good care of their bunnies. and now 3 weeks later my bunny is happy and loving. he loves to hop on me and he binkies and licks me.... hes never once bittin me or drew blood. another thing i wonder is why everyone thinks that getting an animal from a shelter and breeder are SOOOO much better than pet stores. the main reson is because those bunnies need a loving home... well so do bunnies is pet stores.. and another reason is because they get put down if they dont get adopted.. thats even crueler than a pet store !!1 they KILL the animals for not being adopted. and some animals probably go to a shelter if not adopted at the pet stores so its pretty much the same thing !!! but i want your opinion and expiriences. agree with me or prove me wrong ! i wanna hear your side of this and why pet stores are soooooo bad moreResolved Question: What is a good cage for a Syrian Hamster?
So, my mom has (finally) decided to let me own a Syrian hamster :) I am really excited, doing all possible research and all that...i was just wondering what cages would be good for a male Syrian hamster? Anyone else who owns this cage suggest it? Or are there better ones out there? But my mom has no interest in buying aquarium cages though... I just recently brought back a 4-5 inch pumkinseed sunfish back home into my aquarium after catching it at the adirondacks. Ive introduced him into a 10 gallon tank with a 5 inch Gaurami from another tank and when feeding time came around i dropped in tropical flake fish food and a Cichlid color enhancing blend into the fish tank but he ignores it or seems to not realize what it is. How do I get it to eat? I know it must still be traumatized from being hooked and released into a 10 gallon container lol but when i was fishing off the cove these sunnies would eat a hook if it dropped into the water.
