Welcome to Large Aquarium Answers

Open Question: PLEASE ANSWER! Best answer 10 POINTS!!! YOU SHOULD LOOK!!!?

Ok, so I have guppies, a lot, like.... 100! Most of these (97) are babies. My female guppy gave birth twice. The oldest "batch" are 2 months old, and the youngest are 1 month. My library is setting up and aquarium. Some of the 2 month old ones are starting to show color, but some are pinkish still. What foods will make them either grow larger in a week or show more color in a week??? Thank you!!!! more

Open Question: White hanging eggs (??) along two walls of my fish tank. Hundreds of them! What could they be?

I looked at my fishies today and noticed hundreds of little white "baggies" hanging from the sides of my tank at all water levels just "blowing in the breeze"; what in the world are they?! They are shaped just like this pirate hook ( http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.piratemerch.com/images/pirate_hook_58275.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.piratemerch.com/pirate-costumes-pirate-costume-accessories-c-58_50.html&usg=__Ea8u2GAGxuwNUIm3wcncuB7GvD8=&h=500&w=500&sz=16&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=yTgDgQo7oEJhwM:&tbnh=138&tbnw=142&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpirtate%2Bhook%2Bcostume%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us%26rlz%3D1I7ADFA_en%26biw%3D1003%26bih%3D577%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=522&ei=ONKHTMfDGoHCnAetm6iCDg&oei=ONKHTMfDGoHCnAetm6iCDg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=13&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0&tx=65&ty=93 ) in which the curved part of the actual hook is chopped off. Sticking with the picture, imagine: the nub part is frayed at the bottom and loose in the water; the stick/hook portion is stuck onto the sides of my tank. Each is about the size of the end of a pencil lead, and there are hundreds of them: OMG! The tank was just moved from home to my dorm on Aug 30th, so it is possible that something different is in the water here. I did travel with about 8gal of water or so from home, all the bacteria and wheel were preserved in water through trip, fish were transfered to hot-water-cleaned rubbermade container for transport and reintroduced to tank after it was back up and water running for about 5ish hours by being floated in baggies for about 20min. I did have an ick-scare (treated 29days with Coppersafe and sponge filter by marineland). Ick scare means I treat preventatively now for three days with Jungle's Ick Guard II 1xmonth (without carbon filter of course) bc I believe the parasites are in my water. No signs of fish distress, etc; everyone is perfectly normal. One fished died in hospital tank due to long-lasting, unknown, internal infection/parasite/bacteria(??)... there was nothing more I could do. ***My fishtank, freshwater, tropical community:*** -15gal tall Eclipse System 150gal/hr filtration -Access to sunlight, but not in direct sun at all (light is just bouncing off white walls lol). Hood's lamp is used to light and heat tank during the day. -Heated to a constant +/- 78-80*F by seperate heater always (lamp does so on its own). -7 Zebra Danios (5F 2M I believe) -2 Mystery Snails (1 F 1unknown) -2 Dwarf Gouramis (both F) -I think that we might have neamatoads (or whatever those little white worms are that come out at night) bc my mom's tank (same set up and water supply) have them. -Fish are fed any variety of Tetra's Bettamin, Tetra Min Tropical Chrips/Granuals/FD Shrimp and Tetra FD Bloodworms & Tetra Algea Waffers. -No live plants, etc. but tons and tons of fake plants and decorations including a new plant that cover 1/3 the tank's surface. -Tank floor is a mixture of sand, "pond rock"/larger stones, and gravel all from LFS and very very old sea shells that have been in our tanks for years. -API Aquarium Salt is replaced 1xmonth in a small pet-co cup Any comments or advice will be appreciated. ...I'm trying not to worry. Thank you :) SarahbethTo make it clear: there are no parasites/etc on the fish... just whatever this is stuck to the walls of the tank. Also, I don't know the water's quality but it was just changed this past weekend.Thank you for your reply, Tracy. Could you please clarify this: "More significantly, trying to kill a bunch of animals in your aquarium means you're going to end up with lots of decay, and that means poor water quality. Imagine if you killed off a nest of rats with rat poison, but just left the bodies to rot. Bad. The correct approach here is to ignore the worms, and instead control their numbers so the population dies back over time." Are you saying these things are worms? worm eggs? are you also saying don't kill them --or that I killed something, like the ick??-- and that instead just remove them with the PT method? also, so they're harmless and sorta beneficial... should I just leave them? I don't mind as long as the fish are gonna be okay. Sorry for the confusion! Thanks!!Sorry: nevermind Tracy. I understand what you are saying now. Thank you! Your comment makes sense :) more

Open Question: How would you prevent male tilapia ( cichlids ) from killing eachother when spawning?

I'm trying to breed tilapia. But it seems that the males get over aggresive when spawning. These are breeder tilapia's. How can i prevent the males from bullying other males, which eventually lead to death. The one's being bullied usually have marks on the sides of their body. Can i put dividers or large pots for shelter in the pond? It is a huge pond, 18feet long and 7 feet wide. there are about 100 tilapia. which consists or 25 male, and 75 female. Should i consider lowering the # of fish to 80? like 20 male and 60 female. Will these help reduce the deaths? Can i isolate the males with wounds to a seperate aquarium. Can they heal from the wounds on the side of their bodies? What should i do? please help!!! thanks! :-) more

Open Question: How can you tell in a 5 gallon aquarium with 2 goldfish koi and a small beta fish......?

if one is pregnant? I know nothing about fish and my 6 yr. old son is the owner of these little guys and we noticed that the larger of the 2 goldfish koi has gotten very heavy around the middle area and today we noticed 5 pieces of what looked like premature fish floating on the top of the water, it looked like tiny fish with no insides, very clear and a dot where eyes would be. The small beta fish would float next to it and push it with his nose and then swim away, no eating or anything. Any help is appreciated and we just want to help out the fish anyway we can, again, this is all new to me, thank you ;) more

Open Question: What are some good animals under $50?

They MUST be in some sort of cage. I don't mind rodents or anything but no hamsters. Fish are allowed but no guppies or any of those small things. Please don't say hamster or Guinea pig because we owned them and they both died so I don't wanna "trade" them. PS. What are those big fish that often live in aquariums? They are quite large and most chinese restaurants own them.Invstrgadget Loves Kim Possible-YES! That's the one I was thinking of thanks! :]Miley-Noo way!! :D more

Resolved Question: Does anybody know where I can find a 5 gallon aquarium divider?

I have a thai betta plakat in a 5 gallon aquarium, and the filter current is a bit strong for him, so I was wanting to get a tank divider so he could have the benefits of the filter but not be so bothered by the current. I keep looking and all I can find are 2.5 gallon dividers or 10 gallons and larger tank dividers. Does anybody know a good way to make one if I can't buy one? Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks!@ Stripes: Thanks for your tip, but I want something that has small perforated holes so water can flow through to the other side@Robert- I called my local Petland and they said they don't have any :( I think I'll just have to cut a 10 gallon divider down to size or make one myself, thanks for your help all of you :) more

Open Question: Made a boo-boo, will my Cherry Shrimp survive?

The husband and I recently added some Amano Shrimp to our community tank. We thought that they were so cute that we went back to our local fish shop for more. I spotted the Cherry Shrimp in another tank and I said "Hey, let's take some of these guys to add some variation." We asked the employee if they got along with Amano Shrimp and he assured us that it was fine. So we got home and I looked up Cherry Shrimp on the internet, only to find out that they grow quite a bit smaller than the Amanos. We thought we would try them out anyway. After we released them, a few of our Congo Tetras went after them. Our tank is heavily planted (including floating plants), so the Cherry Shrimp were able to scuttle away to safety and hide. It has been a few days now and the Cherry Shrimp are surviving, although they have to scuttle plant to plant or they will be nipped by those darn Congo Tetras! It seems so strange, but all the other fish do not pay attention to them at all. I read some more on the internet and I found a page that says as long as Cherry Shrimp have adequate planting to hide in, that they can survive even with large aggressive fish. I think it could be possible because I have been watching them and they are not stupid little shrimp. They know how to maneuver themselves around the aquarium undetected. Occasionally, a Congo will spot them and go in for a nip but then they will zoom off into the plants faster than lightning. Has anyone else had this experience? Did your Cherry Shrimp survive? Thanks! more

Open Question: I'm getting a 15 gallon aquarium, what is the 'fishless cycle' that I have to do?

So I currently have 1 female fantail goldfish about 8 years old who is living in a 2.5 gallon tank (I think :s) and I am going to upgrade. I know its a small tank but my fantail has lasted 8 years in it and I should have done this a long time ago and should at least have a 10 gallon tank for 1. I also want to get another fantail when I get my new tank. I don't really know what your supposed to do when you get a new larger tank. You have to wait like a month so some type of bacteria can grow but I don't know a whole lot about it. All i would do in the one i have now is empty the tank, clean it, put new water, put a water stabilizer that takes the chlorine out, and put my fish back in. Please answer my question, i don't want to get my new tank and then have my fishy die because i did something wrong :( Any tips, thoughts, questions?? Thank you!thanks!, good info :) my old tank is a stupid plastic one that only has the pump for air and not an actual filter so i could add the old water to the new one, add the rest with new water, treat it, do the ammonia thing and tests and then its fine or do i have to take some/ all the water out and put new water in then its ok?. My fantail is approx. 5" mouth to the point of her tail. What other, maybe smaller fish, could go with her well? more

Resolved Question: 75 gallon community tank idea?

1 Blood Parrot Cichlid, 1 Rainbow Shark, 6 Silver Dollars, 10 Tiger Barbs. According to http://aqadvisor.com, the number and the sizes of fish will work for the aquarium's capacity. 2 Questions: A) Will the BP's size (approx. 8") and the SD's sizes (approx. 5.5") be enough to prevent the RS from bullying them around too much? B) Does 10 Tiger Barbs make a large enough shoal to keep chasing and fin nipping to each other? Any other input would be appreciated. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: What could cause a combination of brownish spots and gasping in my goldfish?

I'm a college student, and my roommate and I accidently won a pet goldfish at an event almost 2 weeks ago. He was touch and go for a while after we brought him back to our room because he's been sitting out in the (albeit setting) sun for a couple of hours in a small 1 gallon bowl with at least 20 other goldfish. We went out and got him a 1 gallon bowl ourselves that night and have since added a filter which says it is designed for 1-3 gallons. Because the filter is in a bowl rather than a tank, we've had to improvise a little and put it at an angle, but it's been like that almost a week now, and gave us no troubles. I've kept fish for most of my life, but this is my first goldfish—he's just a standard, small goldfish, probably not 2 inches in length counting fins. If I can keep him alive through this weekend (including a 3 hour car ride to my parents' house) then I he will have a new, fully filtered, 5-gallon tank waiting for him—which I think will be a much better situation, but I'm worried about him now because he's displaying troubling symptoms. I just noticed a few hours ago that what I thought was possibly a small spot of waste stuck to his tail (that one's literally only a few millimeters long and not even one wide) is actually several similar specs of dark green-brown spots on parts of his fins. It doesn't really look like fin and tail rot because it's only a few specks on isolated fin ridges rather than the overall fraying fin more characteristic of that disease. What's really troubling me is that he also has a brown (not raised-looking) and much larger discoloration spreading over one of his gill areas, and has since been rising to the surface of the water (even though I have a filter) and gasping at it like he was oxygen deprived. He's been doing this several times a minute, which I know is not his usual behavior. I actually noticed this symptom late yesterday, though I didn't see the spots/discoloration then. I have been wrestling with high ammonia levels in my bowl (although this doesn't really look like the dark black patches I've seen with ammonia burn) and was changing out 25-50% of the water daily for a time. I went a bit lax with water changes these past few days because he seemed to be doing better, but now that these symptoms have appeared, I've changed at least 50% of the water today in small increments. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with him or what I should do to fix it (or how dangerous/immediate the problem might be)? I've started adding a little aquarium salt to each of my small water changes in addition to my usual dechlorinator, but that is all I put in my water and I have nothing else on hand in this city (my hometown is a 3 hour drive, which I'm actually hoping to take my fish on tomorrow afternoon). I’ve been going through some rough times lately, and so really don’t want to lose my pet fish too. I’ve become quite paranoid.I forgot to mention that I am also currently trying to lower the temperature in my dorm room to 65 degrees Fahrenheit because I know it is a better temperature for a goldfish in terms of oxygen saturation. And in case I haven't made it clear, I am rather experienced with caring for fish. I KNOW that I need to get him out of a bowl, I have a VERY good tank waiting for him (and actually, current recommendations indicate a 5 gallon tank would be an excellent size for a fish like mine) and will be moving him into it as soon as the fish and the tank are in the same city—Texas is a rather big state. What I am NOT well versed on, having always had a top-of-the-line 20 gallon tank are various DISEASES which could be causing this. I already mentioned the ammonia problem, and am aware it is at least a factor, but the marks look very NON-TYPICAL to be ammonia burns, and so am seeking out OTHER answers, and would appreciate something in terms of HELP as opposed to patronizing lectures about temporary fish bowls. I know they are terrible, and would love to get my fish healthy enough to transport him to his new EXTREMELY WELL-FILTERED tank. more

Resolved Question: Attn: Fish Pros! Platy fish had babies - can they survive if I leave them in 10 gallon tank w/other adults?

We just added 3 platies & 3 long-finned tetras to our newly established tank last week, and noticed that one of the platy fish had babies this week! They are SOOOO teeny, and I can only count about half a dozen or so left, who primarily hide under the large rock structure or plants in the tank. I've been told that the best thing to do is to take them out and put them into a growth tank, but really can't bear the thought of investing in/maintaining another item (along with my 2 preschoolers!). Few questions for you fish-pros: 1. Will these little fry be doomed if I leave them in the big tank with the hungry adults? 2. How in the world do I clean the gravel in the tank with these little guys? Will the Platy fry be big enough to be safely removed from the tank in a few weeks for tank cleaning? 3. Does the presence of these little guys prohibit me from adding more fish to the tank? (We were just getting our aquarium started...) Thanks for your advice!!! Perhaps I should just pretend that I never saw the little guys and let nature do its thing, but I thought I'd at least ask the pros for options. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Too big to be eaten by a Pictus Catfish?

I have an idea for a community 75 gallon tank and would like some feedback/recommendations. I was thinking of "stocking" my tank with fish that will occupy the different levels of the aquarium. According to **http://aqadvisor.com** a 75 gallon is enough space to contain the following community: A) Bottom level = 3 Pictus Catfish. B) Middle level = 8 Silver Dollars. C) Top level = 12 Hatchet Fish. If you couldn't tell, I'm also going for a "silver" theme with the community. I've read, as long as a fish is too big to fit into the mouth of a Pictus Catfish, it's generally safe from being eaten. I've read a PC can get up to 6" long. Here's my question(s): A) Hatchet Fish can reach 2.5" in length. Is this large enough to avoid being Catfish-food from a full grown PC? B) Is 12 Hatchet Fish too much for a shoal of fish that will limit itself to the surface area of the aquarium (approx. 48"X18"). C) Are there any other opinions about my choices in fish? Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: I have a question for Pondlady, or whoever else may know the answer?

Voting Question: How fast do african cichlids grow?

I recently have set up a 40-gallon african cichlid aquarium, with crushed coral as a subtrate, many large rocks providing caves, and two fake plants. Everything is ready, and I have added all the right things to the water. However, at my LFS (which is a very good one), the only way I can buy a variety of different species without draining my wallet is to buy very small cichlids. I'm pretty sure they're not dwarves, just young ones. This annoys me a little because I was looking forward to having decent sized fish in my tank, not just ten tiny little things barely occupying any space. If anyone has an idea of how fast these things might grow when I buy them and put them in, I would really appreciate it: these are about 1-1 1/2" inch long cichlids. They're mbunas (even though I wanted peacock). And if you could give me a suggestion on how many I should buy on the first visit as well I'll give five stars guaranteed~ more

Resolved Question: What type of fish is this? (found in hawaii)?

I found and caught a fish in a tide pool here on oahu and was wondering what type it was I see it in lots of tide pools, so they're common and they look like gobies (with the huge fan-like fins, tall-ish dorsal fin, and same face shape) and it's sand-colored with a head that's slightly larger than the body. I said it was sand colored, but it's also got dark-ish bands on its body, plus it can make its belly (or the large fin on its belly) stick to the aquarium glass. What is this fish??? more

Resolved Question: Aquatic plant advice, please?

Sorry, I know this isn't a "fish" question, but I'm hoping some of you might not mind sharing your knowledge on aquatic plants. I would love to have a small water terrarium. No fish, just something purely aesthetic. I googled it but really didn't find anything all that helpful and was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers on what plants were hardy and would do for a project like this. Any special type of water, lighting, substrate etc. I was thinking of something along the lines of a Very small aquarium with a small filter to give a kind of waterfall effect. Hopefully something with some river rock and moss for the bottom, with larger plants along the back. Is something like this possible? We have a lfs close by with a large variety of live plants, but I have no idea where to begin or what sorts of plants have the same needs as far as care. Any advice would be greatly appreciatedThanks, catx! Just signed up now and going to do some browsing. What I had in mind was more like an underwater forest for lack of a better word. Hopefully I can find a tall enough tank so I can fill it close to 3/4 full so the filter gives a waterfall kind of effect more

Resolved Question: Stocking a 220 gallon aquarium, LIGHTLY?

I am restocking my 220 gallon aquarium, and I want ideas. I already know I want to have: 12 silver hatchets 12 cardinal tetras 12 of one of the "blue" tetras (like kerri or "king blue") 2 pairs of cockatoo cichlids 12 of one of the corydoras species (probably just bronze) possibly one dwarf suckermouth catfish (one of the L-numbers, not interested in larger ones) they need to be fairly resilient fish, and I'd like to try and stick with the South American theme. The tank is already aquascaped with driftwood and fake plants. Water conditions are optimal (in terms of pH and temperature, I'll need to re-cycle the tank before I actually get to add any new animals.) Please no dumb answers like, "Get piranhas!" or, "Get a shark!" Though the tank could probably hold both, I've had experience with both and am interested in neither. more

Resolved Question: Aquarium Chemical Help Please?

Alright, I'm still pretty novice at the whole fish keeping game. Right now I have a 55 gallon tank that has 6 Zebra Danios, 5 Neon Tetras, 2 Glo Fish, 10 Platys, and 1 Pleko. My GH and KH are to high, by a lot and my pH is slightly high. I know that I can get a Tap Water filter or a pillow softener, what do you guys suggest and what brands? Would I get an extra large pillow softener if I got that? Do you suggest API Proper pH 7.0? Or just like pH down? Have you used Waste Control? Or is it a waste of money? I do weekly partial water changes and vacuum the gravel so the ammonia stays perfect most of the time. I'm just a tad confused on what I should use, there's so many different brands of chemicals and stuff it's hard to know which one to use and without a fish specialty store around I can't just go ask someone. Thanks for looking or answering if you do! more

Voting Question: Is it o.k. to have this BGK in this tank (Black Ghost Knife Fish)?

I really love the BGK and my dad had 2 when i was young in a community tank and aggressive to semi-aggressive tank, and both did well. (it was a 55 u.s. gal) I plan on buying a not-so-much 'baby' BGK, but more so smaller one (small for now at least, as i know they can get large) that the private owned strict (Strict as in intense care extremely well-maintained tanks, setups, etc.) fish store i go to is selling. I was just wondering if for its size now it would be OK to have it in a well maintained 40 gal. until he grows excessively? (after that its to the 55 for him. still needs to be set up but there's still much time before that comes into play) I know all their needs, care, etc.But was also wondering if while being well fed on a regular basis in the 40 gal and being a timid-to-other fish even in a larger 40 gal with a lot of room; would be alright to have 1 dojo loach, 1 clown loach, 1 med-small, yet hold-her-ground angel, 1 shark cat, 1 khuli that hides under lava rock all day, 2 giant danio's, 2 Buenos Aires tetra, and 1 poor neon. (The shark ate the other 2). Yes most likely all you fish hobbyist are saying this is over stocked, but if you saw it you would even say it still is very open in there. And yes also there are caves, and a clear "Ghost Viewing" tube ready. ( the tube that is, the caves are beautifully placed hiding areas that appear as natural can be. Just please no put downs or hating, if you really saw it you would understand. I just need to know if the tank is substantial enough for a while until his growth really picks up. And also if the mixture of fish would be alright. I know a lot of successful aquarium hobbyists (including my dad) who have had these fish with BGK in similar conditions and had no problems, but then some who would whip you if you even asked if a BGK would be alright with a assorted species of 'community/assort. tropicals'. Oh yea and it is nicely and moderately planted for the BGK. Not to little, not to much. more

Resolved Question: Help with a chemistry experiment?

Hi, I'm currently doing a chemistry experiment for my Assignment. We have to find an experiment that includes extracting a certain substance and I chose to extract Magnesium. I've found an experiment already but it leaves me with Magnesium Chloride instead of pure Magnesium. Please Help, I'm desperate! I don't mind if you give me a new experiment or just give me ways on how to extract the chloride from the magnesium, I just need this A.S.A.P.! Please help! This is my current experiment: Magnesium (Mg) exists in sea water as ions of magnesium. It's typically extracted from sea water on an industrial scale in a procedure known as the Dow Process. Magnesium chloride is used in the manufacture of fire-resistant materials, paper and textiles. It's also a common dicing agent and a precursor in the production of magnesium metal Step 1: Add slaked lime [Ca(OH2)] to sea water. The magnesium ions (Mg) in the sea water will combine with the slaked lime to form magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] and calcium. Magnesium hydroxide is a solid that will fall to the bottom of the solution as a precipitate and the calcium will remain in the solution as ions. The following equation shows this reaction: Mg + Ca(OH)2 ' Mg(OH)2 + Ca. Step 2: Separate the magnesium hydroxide from the sea water and add two moles of hydrochloric acid (HCl) for every mole of magnesium hydroxide. This reaction will form a solution of magnesium chloride in water. The following equation shows this reaction: Mg(OH)2 + 2 HCl ' MgCl2 + 2 H2O. Step 3: Add four moles of water to the magnesium chloride solution for every mole of magnesium chloride. The following equation shows this reaction: MgCl2 + 2 H2O + 4 H20 ' MgCl2 + 6H20. Step 4: Allow this solution to crystallize as magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2.6H20). Step 5: Store magnesium chloride as magnesium chloride hexahydrate. Pure magnesium chloride is difficult to store because it absorbs water extremely readily. Magnesium chloride hexahydrate may be dehydrated to magnesium chloride when needed by exposing it to hydrogen chloride gas How to make seawater Home uses of seawater include such things as aquariums, holistic treatments and agriculture. Seawater is inexpensive and simple to produce. According to the Seafriends Marine Conservation and Education Center, seawater is a combination of salts mixed with water and gases. While the composition of seawater varies by geographic location, mixing sea salt with tap water most accurately duplicates it at home. Sea salt contains minerals directly from the sea and tap water contains abundant natural minerals like calcium. Step 1: Determine the quantity of seawater you wish to produce. Step 2: Pour the tap water into a mixing container that is large enough to accommodate the quantity of seawater you are making. Allow the water to settle for approximately 10 minutes and come to room temperature. Step 3: Add the sea salt to the water, stirring slowly until completely dissolved. According to Sir Francis Drake High School, you will need approximately 35 grams of sea salt per liter of water or approximately 4 oz. of sea salt per gallon of waterThis is not what I'm giving in, the teacher wanted the specific method, we didn't have to change anything about it. The report will we written separately. more

Resolved Question: Will this setup work?

Firstly, I had a 30 gallon tank with live aquatic plants along with 2 female guppies and 1 male (fancy). My parents aren't too into the idea of buying a heater although if the fish are in dire need of it, then I can convince them into buying one. So instead, I keep our house a little over room temperature and keep the aquarium light on the entire day. Will this be a supplement for a heater? Also, I am feeding my guppies goldfish food because I never got rid of all my goldfish food from my previous experience, but I include boiled cucumbers/lettuce is their diet. As of now my fish aren't showing any symptoms of illness or anything else of that nature. The reason I said had was because a couple of days ago, my friend asked me to take care of his goldfish (he won it at a festival) because his parents are in a financial situation and they had to move. It is about 5 inches and approximately 3 years old (it has the white pimples on its gills so that's how I am guessing its age). On the first day that he was included, the guppies huddled up in one corner and seldom moved. I am extremely confident in my guppies' survival because the goldfish's mouth is not large enough to consume their bodies. On the second day my guppies once again started to roam around the tank, although they do tend to accelerate when they get near the goldfish. Is this normal? I am also aware that goldfish prefer cold water, but can they live in warm water? My parents are taking me to PetCo this Saturday after my basketball game and I was thinking of adding 2-3 Terite Snails as well as a few more plants. None of my female guppies are pregnant as of now, but when one of them does have fry I will not try to ensure all of their survivals so I am just going to let nature take its place (survival of the fittest). Thank you for taking your time to read and I appologize for spreading my questions all over the place. more

Resolved Question: Is it safe to put larger stones from my backyard in my aquarium?

So we've got a creek in our backyard with some great stones I would like to use as decoration in my FW tank. I was worried they would be too heavy for the tank? Or should I stick to smaller ones? Also, I've heard that you should boil any stones you find to kill bacteria, or do some vinegar test on them? Is this really necessary? more

Resolved Question: Community tank for a 75 gallon aquarium.?

I have a 75 gallon aquarium and would like to create a community tank. I viewed a website that had a pretty cool idea for a tank, but the type of fish the site suggested are rare (at least for where I live) and would need to be special ordered. Because I like the concept the website used, I'd like to kind of copy it. The concept emphasized the different sizes of fish that could live together in a 75 gallon aquarium. I kinda have my mind set (but it can be changed) on the following: 1) One Large fish = Blood Parrot Cichlid (8 inches) 2) Two Medium size fish = Firemouth Cichlids (6 inches) 3) A school (10 - 12) of small size fish = ??? = (2.5 - 3 inches) Here's the question. Does anyone have a recommendation for what the school of fish could be? Would 10 - 12 Tiger Barbs work? If not, any suggestion(s) would be appreciated. And thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Is my betta fish sick?

A few days ago I noticed that my all blue male betta fish has had some gills turn grey and some white rather large spots have shown up. His top fin has also gotten much shorter. I thought it might be tail rot but it said that is caused by dirty water. However, we change and clean his water weekly. He also moves around a lot and eats everything we give him. He doesn't really act sick. For the past few days we've been adding some betta medication saying that it 'heals damaged fins and skin.' The brand is BettaFix made by API:Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. So any idea what's going on with my fish? It would be much appreciated thank you =) more

Resolved Question: Can I keep these fish in my tank?

My aquarium is 4 feet long, 16 inches tall, and 14 inches deep. Can I keep 1-2 blood parrots, 1 angelfish, and 1 silver dollar in the tank? I will get them all at a young age so that they will be able to grow up together. I know blood parrots can get along with silver dollars. and i know blood parrots can get along with angelfish, but will the angelfish get along all right with the silver dollar? Also, should I get one blood parrot or two? I want to get two, but I want to make sure it is okay. I know all these fish grow very large, so I am thinking that once they are grown, I will get another tank so that they will have more room. What do you think?i plan to get the fish one at a time. one fish each week. more

Resolved Question: What are my options for protecting my fish from a powerful filter?

My filter is not overpowered for my 30-gallon aquarium, but I have seen fish being sucked to the side of the intake hose. The most recent victim was able to get away, but the first was not so lucky. I would like to cover or shield the fish from the intake hose, but don't want want to take away from its ability to clean. Additional info: Many of my fish are small. The fish that was able to escape was a larger cichlid. more

Resolved Question: How do I clean my 29 gal aquarium?

Some of the decorations in my 29 gal aquarium are growing algae and I want to clean everything up. Should I take the fish out and put them into a bucket? I am guessing it would only take about an hour to clean so would they be alright? Or should I just empty about half of the water and work around them? Also, should I just use water and a brush to clean the algae or is there any type of fish safe soap or solution that will help? I regularly change the water and do some minor cleaning but this is the first time I will be doing a cleaning this large so any suggestions would be great!! more

Resolved Question: How can I make my fish less shy?

I have a synodontis catfish in a tank with a Betta and some Tetras, yet it spends the entire day hiding under the driftwood in the tank. It comes out at night and swims around and nothing ever goes near it, the Betta did once but it got a nip in the fin for its trouble, and hasn't tried again since. It's about the largest fish in the tank, yet it is very shifty when it comes out. It never ventures far from its bogwood either, even though the aquarium is well-planted. Can anyone suggest how to make it braver? more

Resolved Question: Goldfish tank water brown, gold fish sick?

I'm a cat lover and never had interest in fish keeping. My cat brought home a live but injured goldfish just over two years ago. I rescued it, but it can't go back to a pond because of its injuries. (It lost a lot of gut through a hole in its belly, and now it excretes through the hole and doesn't get bigger because it's underfed, but I hate to kill it because otherwise it seems quite happy.) I bought a second fish to keep it company and a 20 litre tank, on the advice of the local aquarium shop. I have gravel, no plants, a pump filter containing charcoal, and I replace the charcoal every month, the filter when it starts to break up. I rinse the filter in pond water every week to keep it clean, and I replace about 5 litres of the water. Last summer someone else's cat caught a third gold fish and I was black mailed into taking it - threat of it being eaten by the finder's Koi Carp otherwise. Now I read that my tank is criminally too small for the poor fishes, but no one will re-home them for fear of infections. Not only is the water filthy and brown despite repeated treatment with something from the fish store, but the fish are now lethargic, not feeding and two out of the three have big sores on their rear flanks in the same place. The biggest of the three doesn't have any sores....... I think he is attacking the two smaller fish. I put medication in the tank, but to use the water cleaner and the medication the charcoal has to come out. Is it okay to do a daily 20% water change? I don't mind doing that since the fish go lively again when there's fresh water, even though it stays brown. I use a water conditioner from the fish store, and never put in untreated tap water. I let it stand overnight to be the same temperature too. I would like to rehome the two larger fish and keep the disabled one, maybe with a companion of a species that won't grow big. I can't euthanise her after two years, just because she's making extra work for me, but clearly three fish, two of which have doubled their size in a year, to over three inches long, is far too much for a 20 litre tank. more

Resolved Question: 30L Aquarium Stocking?

Hi There. I am interested in purchasing an Aqua One AquaStart 320 Aquarium (Link Below). http://www.onlineaquariumstore.com/acatalog/Aqua_One_Aqua_Start_320_Aquarium_Pink.html As you can see, It is a cubular aquarium (roughly) of about 28 L. (Its near enough 30 Litres - why I said 30 above) I am unsure of what I could stock it with. I'm thinking I'll put a heater in it and go tropical, as most of the fish that I like are tropical. So, Please could you give me some ideas on stocking. I'd prefer small, schooling/shoaling fish to one or two larger fish (and yes, I know NO GOLDFISH - so I'd prefer it if you didn't mention those = ] ) I'd also like the fish to be colourful, not plain such as fish like White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Thanks 8 ¬ )Anything instead of a Betta? (I had actually already thought of this). What about 3 Guppies, 4 cardinals and one or two small loaches, or 3 guppies, 4 cardinals and 1 or 2 mollies or platys? You see, I'd really like some small tropical fish...........Would those ideas make the aquarium too overstocked? more

Voting Question: African Sidneck Turtle Help?

I just got a new African Sideneck Turtle. I followed all the directions on how to care for him and have set his aquarium up as mostly freshwater with a large floating platform for him to bask on. But ever since I have had him he rarely (if ever) uses the platform and spends all of his time in the water. Is this normal? Also on a few occasions I have put several small minnows in the aquarium for him to snack on but he eats them all at once! I feed him the pellets everyday. Why does he eat them all so quickly? more
