Resolved Question: Is this a good time to be getting a large fish tank?

I'm almost 15 and have two ten gallon tanks. I love fish and would love to be able to have a large tank, such as a 20+ gallon tank. Would it be a good time if I'm going to be going to college in 3 to 4o years? My parents said they would care for the fish when I leave, but what do you think? more

Open Question: whats wrong with my tropical fish?

I have a 240 litre tank. 26c.Theres lots of fake plants in and caves for the fish to hide. In the tank I have a large pleco, 2 small angel fish, 2 elephant nose fish (i had 3 but one has just died) black ghost knife fish, 5 small platties, and 3 other small fish i dont know the name of, and also a small isolation tank with 35 guppy babies in (the mothers have since died). All the fish keep going to the top for air, i've cleaned the filter, and as im new to this im not sure what to do next. Ive done a test on the water and its all within normal limits, it just seems to be the oxygen isnt right. Any ideas??? Also any tips for the the guppy babies??? ThanksI've overstocked?? Oh no!! Im new to this and even though ive asked in the fish shop, i was told it was fine. And it doesnt look overstocked its looks empty. the test ive done is a called an Interpret Easy Test. you fill the test tubes with water from the tank, add the tablets and match the colour of the tube to the result table. the broad ph range is 7.5 which says acceptable, the ammonia was below the recommended 1.2 (going from the temp to the ph) one nitrate test was 0.1 again say acceptable and the other nitrate was between 0-10mg/l which says good conditions. Do i need a better test kit? what do you suggest? Thanks for your help more

Open Question: Tropical fish eating goldfish?

So I did a big no no and have tropical fish mixed in with my goldfish in my 75 gallon tank. One of my tropical fish has gotten big enough that it bullies the larger Goldfish. He has eaten most of the fin and tail and now just latches on and nibbles. It looks vicious to watch and I feel somewhat guilty. I don't necessary want to separate or remove the misbehaving fish but was wondering if this is common and should I accept the circle of life?I don't have another tank!!! more

Resolved Question: How do we win against animal cruelty accusations?

Hey, it's Estelle. I'm a 15 year old girl, whose entire family is an avid animal lover, I'm currently taking care of: cats (4 of which are kittens),large tanks of salt water and tropical fish (around 10 fish in each), dogs (3 of which are puppies), ferrets, dry land turtle (planning on getting another one), male hamsters, female white rabbits, hermit crabs, male guinea pigs, cockatiels and budgies, female mice. My younger brother is taking care of: Tarantulas, Giant burrowing cockroaches, stick insects. My older brother is taking care of: Baby tigers (required a license here and planning on giving her to a local zoo), corn snake. Mom and Dad are taking care of: Cows, goat, sheep, horses, pigs (2 of which are piglets) chickens (hen and rooster) ducks. And recently we’ve been nursing 4 abandoned cats and 1 injured dog we found on the streets. We have plenty of space for all of the animal who require large areas to run around in, enough tunnels for the rodent families, enough grazing field for the farm animals. Basically we don’t have any shortage for the animals. Each of us take many hours cleaning for the animals, feeding the animals, playing with the animals and making sure they’re happy and healthy and met with every requirement needed to raise them. We don’t grow the animals so that we can eat them (referring to the farm animals) although we do get some plain eggs from Flora (the hen), milk from Sunny (the cow) and Jane (the goat). However, a family friend who had come over to our house had called RSPCA because they thought we were breeding the animals to sell them and thought that we weren’t taking care of them properly. Parents told me not to get into ‘adult business’ so I haven’t, yet. I was just wondering, how are we supposed to rebuke against this accusation? We don’t exactly video ourselves taking care of them and everything =__=. Help? Please and thank you :/The family friend had called on the 2. September and the investigation had been going up until now. It took awhile because we had quite a lot of animals. Yes, the investigator came to our house and he brought a vet and specialist as well. As for Tyson (older brother) and his baby tigers, it wasn’t that he didn’t want them. He’s been raising Lucy since she was 3 weeks old (now 8 months old) and Chichi since she was 2 weeks old (now 10 months old), but he wanted to give them to the local zoo because he thought they’d be in better hands. After consulting with the zoo, he decided to keep the two. I’m proud to say that the investigator, vet and specialist were surprised at how well our animals were kept :D. Thank you all! more

Resolved Question: What could cause a combination of brownish spots and gasping in my goldfish?

I'm a college student, and my roommate and I accidently won a pet goldfish at an event almost 2 weeks ago. He was touch and go for a while after we brought him back to our room because he's been sitting out in the (albeit setting) sun for a couple of hours in a small 1 gallon bowl with at least 20 other goldfish. We went out and got him a 1 gallon bowl ourselves that night and have since added a filter which says it is designed for 1-3 gallons. Because the filter is in a bowl rather than a tank, we've had to improvise a little and put it at an angle, but it's been like that almost a week now, and gave us no troubles. I've kept fish for most of my life, but this is my first goldfish—he's just a standard, small goldfish, probably not 2 inches in length counting fins. If I can keep him alive through this weekend (including a 3 hour car ride to my parents' house) then I he will have a new, fully filtered, 5-gallon tank waiting for him—which I think will be a much better situation, but I'm worried about him now because he's displaying troubling symptoms. I just noticed a few hours ago that what I thought was possibly a small spot of waste stuck to his tail (that one's literally only a few millimeters long and not even one wide) is actually several similar specs of dark green-brown spots on parts of his fins. It doesn't really look like fin and tail rot because it's only a few specks on isolated fin ridges rather than the overall fraying fin more characteristic of that disease. What's really troubling me is that he also has a brown (not raised-looking) and much larger discoloration spreading over one of his gill areas, and has since been rising to the surface of the water (even though I have a filter) and gasping at it like he was oxygen deprived. He's been doing this several times a minute, which I know is not his usual behavior. I actually noticed this symptom late yesterday, though I didn't see the spots/discoloration then. I have been wrestling with high ammonia levels in my bowl (although this doesn't really look like the dark black patches I've seen with ammonia burn) and was changing out 25-50% of the water daily for a time. I went a bit lax with water changes these past few days because he seemed to be doing better, but now that these symptoms have appeared, I've changed at least 50% of the water today in small increments. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with him or what I should do to fix it (or how dangerous/immediate the problem might be)? I've started adding a little aquarium salt to each of my small water changes in addition to my usual dechlorinator, but that is all I put in my water and I have nothing else on hand in this city (my hometown is a 3 hour drive, which I'm actually hoping to take my fish on tomorrow afternoon). I’ve been going through some rough times lately, and so really don’t want to lose my pet fish too. I’ve become quite paranoid.I forgot to mention that I am also currently trying to lower the temperature in my dorm room to 65 degrees Fahrenheit because I know it is a better temperature for a goldfish in terms of oxygen saturation. And in case I haven't made it clear, I am rather experienced with caring for fish. I KNOW that I need to get him out of a bowl, I have a VERY good tank waiting for him (and actually, current recommendations indicate a 5 gallon tank would be an excellent size for a fish like mine) and will be moving him into it as soon as the fish and the tank are in the same city—Texas is a rather big state. What I am NOT well versed on, having always had a top-of-the-line 20 gallon tank are various DISEASES which could be causing this. I already mentioned the ammonia problem, and am aware it is at least a factor, but the marks look very NON-TYPICAL to be ammonia burns, and so am seeking out OTHER answers, and would appreciate something in terms of HELP as opposed to patronizing lectures about temporary fish bowls. I know they are terrible, and would love to get my fish healthy enough to transport him to his new EXTREMELY WELL-FILTERED tank. more

Resolved Question: REPOST: How do I keep the water in my fish tank cooler?

So I asked this question before and I never got an answer so I'm reposting. I have a 1.5 gallon fish kit I got at my local pet store designed to hold about 4-7 smaller fish. I 5 small fish (guppy sized) 2 are suppose to get larger but I have a 55 gallon tank back home where I will take them if they get to large for my fish tank. My tank/kit came with its only air pump and water filtration system. Everything seems to be fine... except for the temperature. I did my research and it seems the optimal temp for my fish would be between 75-80 degrees and right now I know that its at least above 86 (highest my little temp gauge will go) and is possibly close to 90. My dorm has no A/C so I need to figure out how I can cool off the water. A lady at my pet store said I could either place the tank next to a fan to keep it cool and possibly take some water out each day and replace it with cool water. Is this a good idea?? I heard rapid temp change can put fish in shock and I dont really want to do that. . . .will the ice cudes cause sudden temperature change though? Is that gonna be ok for them?Well I guess I'm getting a new fish tank. First of all SORRY. I'm not a bad pet owner I love pets and I've never had a tank less than 50 gallons before but I went to college and wanted some fish and I assumed if a company created a kit that small it would but but I was wrong. I'll be getting them a new tank soon. I dont believe I have room for a 10 gallon but we'll see. more

Resolved Question: Attn: Fish Pros! Platy fish had babies - can they survive if I leave them in 10 gallon tank w/other adults?

We just added 3 platies & 3 long-finned tetras to our newly established tank last week, and noticed that one of the platy fish had babies this week! They are SOOOO teeny, and I can only count about half a dozen or so left, who primarily hide under the large rock structure or plants in the tank. I've been told that the best thing to do is to take them out and put them into a growth tank, but really can't bear the thought of investing in/maintaining another item (along with my 2 preschoolers!). Few questions for you fish-pros: 1. Will these little fry be doomed if I leave them in the big tank with the hungry adults? 2. How in the world do I clean the gravel in the tank with these little guys? Will the Platy fry be big enough to be safely removed from the tank in a few weeks for tank cleaning? 3. Does the presence of these little guys prohibit me from adding more fish to the tank? (We were just getting our aquarium started...) Thanks for your advice!!! Perhaps I should just pretend that I never saw the little guys and let nature do its thing, but I thought I'd at least ask the pros for options. Thanks! more

Open Question: What freshwater fish can live together?

I would like to have a community freshwater tank, what kinds of fish can live together? I would like a 20-30 gallon tank, and I have had guppies before. I would like a large variety of smaller fish, cool colored fish and maybe a suckerfish or a very small shark. How many fish can I get? What kinds should I get? Something lower maintenance would be preferable but all suggestions will be considered. Thanks! more

Open Question: Fish tank has small worms in it? HELP!?

Hello,i have a 50 gallon tank, containing one large cichlid, and one large suckerfish..i also have a 10 gallon with a turtle, catfish & suckerfish (but i'm asking about the 50 gallon one.) Today,i noticed the filters in both tanks were trickling,so i took out the pipes to clean, and to put new filters in. after doing the 10 gallon tank,i started on the 50 gallon tank which has two filters in it.as i dumped the pipes into the sink to clean,i noticed a very small black worm crawling up the side of the sink.this grossed me out beyond belief, because i clean the filters with my bare hands.i almost threw up.it looked like it had two small little hair like projections on its back end.i quickly turned the water on hot & watched it go down the drain.after cleaning the filters,i walked back into my room to put them back in the tank, and saw another one squirming on my desk on the side of the tank.i freaked out, squashed it,and out the filters back together.i put medicine in the water to clean it,and algae cleaner as well.this is completely grossing me out.i was thinking they were living in the filters in the algae in the pipes...? HELP! how do i get rid of them, and are they harmful to me and/or the fish? should i just take the filters off & deep clean them? Keep in mind both me & my fiance clean both my tanks with bare hands, and i want to make sure this isn't a hazard to us. Other details; i do not feed my fish live worms, only canned meal worms,so it cannot be black worms that have reproduced.the tank has no light on it,because it is broken,so the water gets no light, besides the lamps in my room.my fish are perfectly healthy & have no issues.i do not change the water as often as i should, because it is a big hassle since it's a 50 gallon tank & my fish are HUGE.After reading my last answer to this question,i did forget to put one thing,i did have baby fish in my tank a LONG while back (about several months ago) that i got from our local spring.they were very small, they grew a little, then i let my cichlid eat them.i'm really hoping they are not leeches.they are NOT mosquito larvae, they looked totally different from that.plus if they were leeches, wouldn't they be on my hands, because i stuck my hands in the filters? When my fiance gets home,we will deep clean the tank, (change the water, clean the gravel & filters) more

Resolved Question: Too big to be eaten by a Pictus Catfish?

I have an idea for a community 75 gallon tank and would like some feedback/recommendations. I was thinking of "stocking" my tank with fish that will occupy the different levels of the aquarium. According to **http://aqadvisor.com** a 75 gallon is enough space to contain the following community: A) Bottom level = 3 Pictus Catfish. B) Middle level = 8 Silver Dollars. C) Top level = 12 Hatchet Fish. If you couldn't tell, I'm also going for a "silver" theme with the community. I've read, as long as a fish is too big to fit into the mouth of a Pictus Catfish, it's generally safe from being eaten. I've read a PC can get up to 6" long. Here's my question(s): A) Hatchet Fish can reach 2.5" in length. Is this large enough to avoid being Catfish-food from a full grown PC? B) Is 12 Hatchet Fish too much for a shoal of fish that will limit itself to the surface area of the aquarium (approx. 48"X18"). C) Are there any other opinions about my choices in fish? Thanks in advance. more

Open Question: If I put just 1 Oscar in a 75 gallon tank alone, is that bad?

I've been looking online for a while, and I haven't found anything about Oscars getting lonely. Just that they may fight. However, I've been reading MANY stories of people keeping two Oscars in one 75 gallon and them living long healthy lives. I personally know someone that has done this. I know I can't put a Pleco in there, as the tank isn't big enough for those two large fish. And I know smaller fish it will think is dinner. So, if I just get the 1 Oscar, will he be lonely, or act aggressive in any way towards me? Or would he be happier by himself? I know cichlids can be an aggressive breed towards other fish. Thank you. Thanks Ian. Always nice to get a response from you, lol. more

Open Question: Everything I need for my pet rat?

I know most of it - hammock, wheel, bedding, a big cage, toys. I'm pretty much prepared for anything I need with my rat. I know I need to buy it something to gnaw on[toys? or anything else? suggestions please] and to clean it's cage at least once a week. It needs a buddy [right now I can only afford one but when I can I will get it a friend]. I know a lot and it'd be nice to get some tips on what it needs. I have a fish tank for now [seeing as I can only afford the essentials but not the cage] and it's pretty big in length but not width, and I have a fan to put near it so it won't suffocate. Any tips on what I should get [besides the large cage] would be helpful. How much would it roughly cost with the water bottle, bedding, food, the rat itself, hammock, wheel, and anything else I'm forgetting?I'd like to add just so you know that I can afford everything but the cage, but my parents will be paid this friday for disability monthly checks so we can buy a big enough cage. So this friday we'll afford it. more

Voting Question: Which fish should I get?

Resolved Question: New 16 gallon tank for female betta, good tankmates?

I'm buying a 16 gallon (60cm) tank for my female (not aggressive) betta. I know it's not the best size but can't put anything larger in my place. Anw the tank is going to be heavily planted with a big driftwood to lower the ph as it's around 8.3 here.(a bit high but i think the fish have already adapted to that) I want to get neon tetras, zebra danios and some corydoras. I know all need to be kept in groups so how many of them should I get? Also my female betta has short fins so zebra danios wont nip on her, right? Btw the store has both pink/red and blue zebra danios and both grey and white corydoras, do you think it's better to mix colors?i'm going to put the fish after the tank is fully cycled so i have a week or so. I have a male betta in a 9 gallon tank filtered and heated for more than a year. more

Voting Question: How fast do african cichlids grow?

I recently have set up a 40-gallon african cichlid aquarium, with crushed coral as a subtrate, many large rocks providing caves, and two fake plants. Everything is ready, and I have added all the right things to the water. However, at my LFS (which is a very good one), the only way I can buy a variety of different species without draining my wallet is to buy very small cichlids. I'm pretty sure they're not dwarves, just young ones. This annoys me a little because I was looking forward to having decent sized fish in my tank, not just ten tiny little things barely occupying any space. If anyone has an idea of how fast these things might grow when I buy them and put them in, I would really appreciate it: these are about 1-1 1/2" inch long cichlids. They're mbunas (even though I wanted peacock). And if you could give me a suggestion on how many I should buy on the first visit as well I'll give five stars guaranteed~ more

Resolved Question: Are salt water reef tanks easy to maintain?

In my old house my father used to have a very large salt water marine tank, with coral fish and sea anemones. Since we moved many years ago we never set up the fist tank again, and now that I have moved to college I want to start my own fish tank. I realize with the maximum fish tank size of only 20 gallons I can not support a full marine tank with fish, but I was wondering if I could support a tank of just coral, brightly colored to give my room some color and decoration? The only way I could do this is if it is easy to maintain... Please be honest, I would hate to take on a project that is not attainable. Thank you very much more

Resolved Question: Tips for my new fishes??? :)?

Hi, I recently bought two small fishes. They are small fishes and would not grow out to be large, that's what the shop keeper said and gave me a medium sized fish bowl. I have read that fish bowl is not good for the long term, is it true? I have some plastic plants in the bowl. The Food and Oxygen... everything else is in place. Apart from proper food timing and cleaning the tank, is there anything else I need to know to make sure they live a long life? Do they need light around them all the time? For starts I just have two fishes to see how it goes. How do I clean the tank if the water is to be partially replaced and not entirely? Thanks:)The water has become cloudy in a day's time...should I change it partially now or wait for a week?? more

Resolved Question: For everyone who read or answered the "arowana in 10 gallon tank" question yesterday & green puffer advise?

im just letting you all know that i did find a new home for bother the arowana and clown knife that i asked about yesterday. they are now in an exotic fish store and will hopfully find a nice home with a larger tank. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Av48yNWjcHnB5ywWSWE_dTzsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100827223134AAuOuq0 i am keeping the 3 clown loaches and rainbow shark however and they are now in a 30 gallon tank, theyll be moved to a 55 gallon later on once they grow. now about the "evil" 10 gallon tank we all talked about. with the money i got from selling the fish i bought a green spotted puffer to be kept alone in the 10 gallon. this one wasnt an impulse buy like the arowana and clown knife though, ive done tons of research on these and should be about to take care of them. but i would like to know if anyone might have any other advise or personal expirences that they might be willing to share with me. thanks more

Resolved Question: Suggest 1 more fish for this set up?

Hey guys! So I got another 90 gallon tank. It's 48" (L) x 24" (D) x 18" (H) So far I have inside: - 1 x Angelfish - 1 x Red Tailed Black Shark - 1 x African Butterfly Fish - 1 x Convict I am trying to find a good bottom fish or any other slightly large fish for this set up but I can't think of any? Any ideas? Don't say Bristlenose Plecos, I love them but I can't find them anywhere in a 200 mile radius of where I live. Are you crazy? If they breed they will kill off everything else! more

Voting Question: Can a gold fish go in the same tank as a Sunset fish?

I currently have two tanks. One is a 10 gallon tank with just 1 Sunset fish, and a Plecostomus; the other is a 1.5 gallon tank with a fairly large Goldfish in it. I want to know if the Sunset fish will get along with the Goldfish if I were to put them into the same tank. I've tried to look it up but all answers say no, because Sunset fish apparently need warmer water. Mine is not in warmer water however. So other than temperature, is there any reason they cannot live together in the same tank? Also, do note that my Sunset fish is perfectly fine in the cold water. Had it for a year or so now and it seems happy.Edit: I have a rubber nose Pleco, so it's fine in the 10 gallon tank; and goldfish only grow to the size their tank allows them to, so he's fine too. more

Resolved Question: Stocking a 220 gallon aquarium, LIGHTLY?

I am restocking my 220 gallon aquarium, and I want ideas. I already know I want to have: 12 silver hatchets 12 cardinal tetras 12 of one of the "blue" tetras (like kerri or "king blue") 2 pairs of cockatoo cichlids 12 of one of the corydoras species (probably just bronze) possibly one dwarf suckermouth catfish (one of the L-numbers, not interested in larger ones) they need to be fairly resilient fish, and I'd like to try and stick with the South American theme. The tank is already aquascaped with driftwood and fake plants. Water conditions are optimal (in terms of pH and temperature, I'll need to re-cycle the tank before I actually get to add any new animals.) Please no dumb answers like, "Get piranhas!" or, "Get a shark!" Though the tank could probably hold both, I've had experience with both and am interested in neither. more

Resolved Question: Help with choosing an algae eater.?

I have a fully cycled, planted 10 gallon tank housing a male betta and 4 cory cats. I have a bit of an algae problem in it, greenish brown algae which do come off from glass when you rub them (although I hate having my hands in the tank) and hair algae (which must have been introduced into the tank with some of the new plants). I am not sure what my pH is, I'll get a testing kit tomorrow (I know that snails cannot survive in acidic water). Anyways I need an algae eater that: Can live in 10 gallon tank (no plecos, no chinise algae eaters, no fish that simply grow to large). Does not bother live plants. Eats brown-green algae that grows on the glass (this algae does not form into any strings, it just grows as film on the glass) Eats hair algae (which I find to be exceptionally annoying) Will not reproduce asexually or sexually in a community tank, or is very unlikely to do so. It is fairly common to get in new york area. I don't really care if its a fish, a snail or a group of shrimp. I will have the pH reading by afternoon, right now its 4:30 am and the pet store is closed, for obvious reasons. more

Resolved Question: arowana in 10 gallon tank. help?

feel free to call me crazy for this. currently im keeping a 7 inch long arowana in a 10 gallon tank and hes a comfortable size for the tank right now but im just hoping he wont get any bigger. Will he stop growing due to the small size of the tank like most fish do? also its tank mates are 3 clown loaches, a rainbow shark, and a small clown knife (like i said feel free to call me crazy) i really like this fish but the only larger tanks i have are community tanks and as we all know they cant be put in with community fish for obvious reasons. but if he gets to larger then i will have to sell him. btw dont get me wrong, im actually a very good fish keeper, but when it comes to these kinds of fish im somewhat losti cant do that big. the most i could do is 55 gallons. and when it comes to more exotic fish im pretty lost. im very good with community fish but not these insane fish like this. and let me correct one thing, hes 5 inches. the clown knife is 4 inches and the rest are all 2-3 inches. so theyre all babies. but i cant do anything more then 55 gallons for them. if i could i would.ive been looking for 2 weeks to find another home for them and cant find anything. i dont plan to keep them unless a giant tank magically pops up out of no where cus something you all have to realize is IM A TEEN and i cant aford much. i have a 55 gallon but thats as big as i can get. i know that these are big fish, ive done plenty of research on all them. but i didnt use my head half the time so now im in a tough situation with it. but if i could find a home for them id sell them in a heartbeat, i just cant find anyone who will take them. i do wish i could find a way of keeping them but it dosnt seem possible at all. but im not a total dumbass here, the 10 gallon was the only place they could go at the time. either there or on the floor so i think i went with the better option. and in all the other tanks i have happy healthy fish. breeding angelfish, hundreds of baby guppies(seperate tank), quickly growing balas, breeding dwarf gouramis, ect ect ect. so i do know what im doing withsimple community fish. just not these massive exotic ones. just a normal guy who made a screw up is all so dont picture me as some animal abusing idiot cus im really not. i came here woundering if what i was doing was possible for a short period of time while i try and find someone who will take them, not to show off how mean i am. more

Voting Question: Help my Betta Fish! Please? Fins are gone!?

I have a 2 betta fish, I bought them both white with a pink tint. I have a girl and a boy. The girl is Beebop and the boy is Ballerina (He looks like a ballerina, I know it's weird but it is what it is.) They are both quite old, almost a year. But in the past few days, Ballerinas fins have been shortening. I just changed his tank water but I didn't notice until I saw him in the cup. He looks just like Beebop now with the fin shape and shortness but with a larger body. Please help. What happened?! P.S. These betta fish are my life.I don't think it has fin rot, his colors are the same and his fins aren't tattered, they're just short, like maybe a centimeter long now but not in bad shape, their the same length all the way along with no holes or irratations. And he is not in the same tank as beebop but was next to her tank for a bout a week. more

Resolved Question: Sick or Depressed Betta Fish?

I bought a Betta fish about five months ago and made his home in a five gallon, heated and filtered tank. He's usually swimming around, happy and energetic. He hasn't had any problems so far. About two weeks ago, I cleaned the tank. I put new gravel into the tank. He loved it after he got over the shock. Then school started about five days ago and he started acting funny. Tuesday, I came home really late after a club meeting and he was just sitting on the bottom of the tank. When I fed him, he didn't eat. He was like this since today, so I moved him to a smaller tank for the time being (I wanted to make sure that it wasn't something I put in the tank). I used the left over old gravel I had and conditioned the water like I normally would, but made it proportional. He's been in the smaller tank for about three hours and he seems to be doing better. He's swimming around fine and I fed him a little bit ago and he ate. The large tank doesn't look dirty at all, and the only thing new I put in was the gravel. Was the gravel making him sick, or was he just depressed? If he was sick, what is it and how can I treat him? If he's depressed, how can I make him feel better?Note: I can't change the size of the tank, as I have no money and he really liked his large tank. He has two plants and a cool skull that he swims in an out of and sleeps in at night. Thank you to everyone that has answered and knows what they're talking about. I really appreciate it!Also, the skull is an aquarium skull, not a real one. Just wanted to be clear, just in case someone was concerned. more

Voting Question: Stocking fish tank question: what type of fish is best?

We have recently lost our kissing gourami. She was only 3-4 inches long and she was housed with guppies and neons. However, we are thinking on getting out of the community fish theme. Since she was small we housed them in a 30 gallon tank and everything was fine. We are thinking on selling off the guppies and neons and getting something large. We would love two large intelligent fish and were thinking about getting oscars but they do get quiet large and will outgrow our tank in due time. We do want to stay freshwater tropical though. Any suggestions on some large fish that will thrive with maybe just two of the type in the tank? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Fish died? Too stressed?

I got a fish on Saturday to put in a spare fish tank i had as my axolotl has been moved into a bigger tank. I got a cold water fish that was in a large container labeled ''rainbow fish'' although the lady said it was a fish beginning with s (i can't remember what - it did look like a rainbow coloured goldfish though) Anyway i wanted two but the lady refused even though there was 30+ fish in this tank! I bought Wonder home (that's what dad named her) and she seemed VERY lost and stressed out. I did the correct way of putting her in the water and she was fed everyday. Today i woke up and she was dead. She lasted 5 days! I'm just curious was it stress related? i did think she looked very stressed, she was swimming round in circles and didn't seem comfortable all by herself in this new environment. Now i've got it in my head she would of survived if the lady had given me two fish as she would of had company and of been less stressed? Should the woman of given me two fish when i asked or was she right to say no?DeeDee - It was outside in the coldwater tank. It was a rainbow goldfish!Aha shubunkin. That is what it wasThe tank had half the axolotl water still left in as this is what the lady said. We rested the fish in it for 1hour before i let her out. No it has no filter but i was going to get one!Well that STUPID woman told me to leave the water because it would have the right bacteria in it for the fish!! Grrr. more

Resolved Question: Aquarium Chemical Help Please?

Alright, I'm still pretty novice at the whole fish keeping game. Right now I have a 55 gallon tank that has 6 Zebra Danios, 5 Neon Tetras, 2 Glo Fish, 10 Platys, and 1 Pleko. My GH and KH are to high, by a lot and my pH is slightly high. I know that I can get a Tap Water filter or a pillow softener, what do you guys suggest and what brands? Would I get an extra large pillow softener if I got that? Do you suggest API Proper pH 7.0? Or just like pH down? Have you used Waste Control? Or is it a waste of money? I do weekly partial water changes and vacuum the gravel so the ammonia stays perfect most of the time. I'm just a tad confused on what I should use, there's so many different brands of chemicals and stuff it's hard to know which one to use and without a fish specialty store around I can't just go ask someone. Thanks for looking or answering if you do! more

Resolved Question: How LONG should i keep my FRY in breeder tank?

Resolved Question: Would a few large koi aswell as several smaller fish grow healthily in a 1000 gallon tank?

Would a few large koi aswell as several smaller fish grow healthily in a 1000 gallon (5000 litre) resin tank (Circular tank- 7ft diameter, 4ft depth)? This kind of tank is one of the largest I can find and was wondering if this kind of set up with appropriate filters would be suitable to grow on many small koi (4-8 inch) as well as housing a few larger fish (Over 12 inches) as i do not want to mix koi with the goldfish in our current pond. Any relevant comments or advice is greatly appreciated more

Voting Question: Fish suggestion for nano marine?

I'm just posting up here for ideas really! I have a 10months well established nano reef - 20gallons with 5 gallon internal sump, T5 lighting system with cooler fans and splash shield, stock filter with added phosex, carbon, bioballs and ammolock, additional powerhead - 3000l/h, tank kept at 26-30 degrees celcius (it get's hot during the day) In the tank I have two ocellaris clowns - breeding pair, female is 3 inches, male is 1 inch, a royal dottyback - 3 and a half inch female and a scarlet damselfish - 4.5 inches long, 4 inches in diameter. So I will be trading this damsel, she has just gotten way too big for the tank, the clowns and dottyback are not expected to grow much more. So should I just get another damsel to replce my large female, or should I go for something different? The dottyback is quite territorial and she will guard her area fiercely, so keep that in mind. The clowns are breeding, so the female gets quite aggressive too. Inside the tank is also two female pacific cleaner shrimp, 3 snails, 3 scarlet reef hermits, a sand sifting starfish, a peppermint shrimp and corals - small polyp zoanthids, Xenia, mushrooms, feather duster Tank also has a fair amount of amphipods, copepods and worms, so I can sustain more picky eaters. So any ideas? Thanks immat, I do ahve to say that Ocellate damsel is absolutly amazing! I had a yellowtail before, unfortunatly she died to ammonia poisioning during an unfortunate spike 7 months ago. I was considering something like the midas blenny, he does need a 30gallon, but chances are I'll have a larger tank soon! (Looking into getting a 4 foot), I had a bicolour who died of stress, due to having to move tanks two days in a row (two leaky tanks in two days, was a long week), I'm avoiding bicolour fish however due to the dottyback taking adversary to them! I may look into a blenny/goby type however, I would just be worried about them getting too close to the dottybacks territory, she's known to fin nip, that being said, she has calmed down immensly in the past two months. more

Resolved Question: Freshwater Predatory Fish?

I'm thinking of starting a 35-70 Gallon freshwater tank and I want to get 1-3 predatory fish. Also: What is the closest fish legal in New York that is aggressive like the Snakehead but doesn't get too large for the size of the tank?Snakeheads and Piranha are illegal in New York, right? more

Resolved Question: Fish recovering from ammonia poisoning?

Background info: I recently became aware that my family's goldfish, Bubba, who we've had for 3 years, has ammonia poisoning. We recently put him, along with a new goldfish and two mollies (and two snails), into a 5 gallon tank, which HAD NOT been cycled. This all occurred within one day (I know it is wrong, my dad did it without researching it). We removed the mollies the next day, since they were attacking the goldfish. Bubba became very lethargic, and after two or three days I noticed he had red veins showing in his tail, which was looking pretty ragged and had torn a little. I searched the symptoms online, and came up with ammonia poisoning. Went to the pet store, they advised to do a water change and vacuum the gravel. I also tested for ammonia in the water with a strip kit, and it was "dangerously" high (the darkest it could get). So, I did about a 75%-80% water change, used a gravel vac to clean out the gravel, then treated the new water with Stress Coat. I reassembled the tank filter, and let the tank sit for about an hour so the water would reach the right temperature. I just recently added both goldfish back after testing the ammonia again, this time the test showed 0ppm, ideal. Both seem to be doing well, Bubba seems a little more active too. I plan to do at least 20% water changes every day for a few days, as well as monitor the ammonia level. So here are my questions: 1. Is the 5 gallon tank large enough for both goldfish? (both are approx. 2 inches) 2. How much/often should I be feeding them while recovering? 3. Is it okay/beneficial to have the snails in the tank? Any other advice you can offer will be helpful! more

Resolved Question: what are some active colourful fish for a small tank?

i was looking at getting GloFish however after looking into them i found out that they are not in Canada... i want colourful fish that are active... for my 10g tank... i have other larger community tanks with a variety of fish in them... but i have this 10g that i used to keep my baby guppies or mollies or Swordtail's... but i do not want to separate the babies anymore it was too much work... i no longer have mollies or guppies... i want something fun a different... the local petstore i go to is either petsmart or a place called petslife, and they will order requested fish if i know what i want... any ideas? the tank has very colourful blue pink and purple gravel and several fake bight colourful plants (blue green red pink purple) dont know if that will matter but figure it wont hurt to let ya know... more

Resolved Question: Want to buy a fish but not sure which?

I've never owned fish before so will admit to being completely clueless on the subject! However I Was wondering if there are any fish out there that don't mind small tanks? I want one in my room but don't have space for a huge tank but obviously i'm not just going to buy a small tank and put any old fish in there cause I realise that's unfair. But I was wondering if there are any that are okay with smaller tanks? Also are there any fish that don't mind not being in large groups, maybe just 1 or 2 others? Or do they all like being in big groups? Basically any info would be great! Thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: Is it o.k. to have this BGK in this tank (Black Ghost Knife Fish)?

I really love the BGK and my dad had 2 when i was young in a community tank and aggressive to semi-aggressive tank, and both did well. (it was a 55 u.s. gal) I plan on buying a not-so-much 'baby' BGK, but more so smaller one (small for now at least, as i know they can get large) that the private owned strict (Strict as in intense care extremely well-maintained tanks, setups, etc.) fish store i go to is selling. I was just wondering if for its size now it would be OK to have it in a well maintained 40 gal. until he grows excessively? (after that its to the 55 for him. still needs to be set up but there's still much time before that comes into play) I know all their needs, care, etc.But was also wondering if while being well fed on a regular basis in the 40 gal and being a timid-to-other fish even in a larger 40 gal with a lot of room; would be alright to have 1 dojo loach, 1 clown loach, 1 med-small, yet hold-her-ground angel, 1 shark cat, 1 khuli that hides under lava rock all day, 2 giant danio's, 2 Buenos Aires tetra, and 1 poor neon. (The shark ate the other 2). Yes most likely all you fish hobbyist are saying this is over stocked, but if you saw it you would even say it still is very open in there. And yes also there are caves, and a clear "Ghost Viewing" tube ready. ( the tube that is, the caves are beautifully placed hiding areas that appear as natural can be. Just please no put downs or hating, if you really saw it you would understand. I just need to know if the tank is substantial enough for a while until his growth really picks up. And also if the mixture of fish would be alright. I know a lot of successful aquarium hobbyists (including my dad) who have had these fish with BGK in similar conditions and had no problems, but then some who would whip you if you even asked if a BGK would be alright with a assorted species of 'community/assort. tropicals'. Oh yea and it is nicely and moderately planted for the BGK. Not to little, not to much. more
