Resolved Question: how do I remove silicone sealant from my acrylic aquarium?

I made my own aquarium by melting acrylic pannels together with methylene chloride. Unfortunately, it leaked. I put on some aquarium silicone sealant, and it still leaked in one place. So now I'm trying to remove the silicone sealant so that I can try again- but I'm concerned that if I buy a "silicone remover" compound (in a tube or something) that it will compromise the joints. I don't want this thing to fall apart when I try to scrape off the silicone. Any ideas on how to do it short of manually scraping it (it's a long, arduous process, well underway)? If you tell me to re-apply the silicone without cleaning off the old, you won't get the best answer. I need to know how to remove silicone sealant from acrylic (specifically polymethylmethacrylate) without damaging the acrylic. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Setting up a Cichlid Aquarium- Need Help!?

About two weeks ago, I bought a 40-gallon aquarium that came with a working hang-on-the-back filter, heater, ornaments and gravel. The gravel is pretty coarse: about 1/2"-diameter polished rocks. I set up a decent fish tank for a while, with many fake plants and cute ornaments, and let it sit for a week. Then I bought six guppies: two males, four females. The day after that, two females died. I was worried about my future guppy tank, but after doing some intensive research, I decided that I should have made a Cichlid tank to take advantage of how much my aquarium can hold. I read that guppies were good for starting the cycle for a Cichlid tank, though, so I was happy I had still made that decision, even if it was for another reason. I changed the decorations in my tank with the guppies still in it, so now I have a good Cichlid tank layout, with many rocks, that are stacked or formed into little caves or crevices. I have one fake plant behind the rocks in each corner. However, I really want to make this Cichlid tank as perfect as possible, so I have a decent amount of issues: -My current tank is 40-gallon, the temperature is 79-80 degrees, and the pH is 7.6 1. I am aware that the pH needs to be raised to 8.0-8.2, but I don't know the best way to do that safely without harming my guppies or anything. Also, the guppies can't really handle a pH that high, so when would be a good time to do it? 2. The guppies have been in for 2 days now. How long should I wait until the tank is fully cycled? 3. I fear that my gravel is much too coarse for Cichlids, who like to dig around alot. I want to buy a new substrate, preferably sand, but I really don't want to take out all the gravel on the bottom and then pour sand into the water to have it float around and cloud the water with fish in it. Would it be possible to put sand on the gravel? I don't have eggcrate on the bottom, but I feel like the coarse gravel supports the rocks well and protects the acrylic from them. 4. To raise my pH naturally, should I buy Aragonite sand, reef sand, etc.? What would be something that I could most likely put on my gravel and would raise the pH to about 8.0-8.2? I also have some dried coral, but I don't know if it will manage to raise the pH enough and then buffer it. If pH-raising sand is the better idea, please post a link or something on the Petco or Petsmart website (so that I can easily go buy it at the store. Also, note that I don't buy my fish at Petco, I go to a LFS). 5. What would I do with my guppies when my Cichlid environment is completely ready? Are they likely to get eaten, or could they co-exist with the first pair I put in? (They almost always hang at the top of the tank) 6. Is my filtration sufficient? I would like to spend as little as possible, but if better or additional filtration is necessary, please let me know. I'm sorry for the long and horrifyingly specific questions, but I've had a lot of problems with fish tanks, and this is my first one with bigger fish, so I'm not ready to cut any corners anymore. Any help with any of these questions is truly and deeply appreciated- Thank you in advance! If more filtration is necessary, I probably would need something inside the tank, since 2 hang-on-the-back filters seems excessive.Forgot to specify- I'm going to get African Cichlids: most likely lake Malawi ones.Kenyi fish are what I'm aiming for as a start, followed by anything that can eventually accompany it and give color diversity in the tank. I haven't managed to find a compatibility chart, list or anything that can tell me compatible species of lake Malawi fish that will live in harmony. My understanding is that most Mbuna fish are able to live together, if the ratio of females to males is at least 4 to 1, and if the males are of different species and color than each other. If I'm wrong, then I'll ask a question about Mbune compatibility.Mbuna* my mistake more

Resolved Question: How to move my Betta Fish to new Tank?

Okay, so I've had great success here asking questions, so here I go again asking for your lovely peoples help! :) I've had my Betta for a month now, he's in an Aquaeon Mini Bow 5.0 (5 Gallon) Acrylic Tank with a small heater, AquaClear 20 Filter, and some aquarium Gravel, Silk Plants and 2 small Caves. Now My little sister just bought a Betta, and to avoid her keeping him in a 1 gallon Closet, I offered to give her my tank, and upgrade mine to a 10 Gallon Glass Aquarium that they sell at Petsmart. A very standard setup, nothing crazy. Now here are my numerous questions/concerns. I understand that the 10 gallon will no longer be cycled as I will be starting from scratch again, however I plan on carrying over my Old filter which has its bacterial Colonies all in order, is this okay? I also Plan on bringing over some of the silk plants, with possibly getting new ones. However I've always wanted to experiment with real plants. Yet i'm afraid of rotting, and parasites, and all that jazz. If I were to try and incorporate live plants, what precautions would I need to do rid them of parasites/disease before adding them. Turbo (my fish) will probably not like moving after getting comfy. But I feel like this will be better for him and the other fish. Plus he's doubling his home! Also, Are glass tanks not as nice to have as Acrylic? i know glass is cheaper, and I did some research on the two. But I wanted to see what other fish owners had to say. Thanks!!!Sorry I forgot to mention! Filter is good for 5-20 gallon tanks with adusting flow. So its set at lowest now, but in my 10 gallon tank it should work fine! more

Resolved Question: What fish tank should I buy as a present for my husband who used to keep tropical fish?

It's my husband's 30th birthday next month and I hope to buy him an aquarium as he used to keep tropical fish tank, but hasn't for the last few years I know he'd like to start back up again. This way he can get the tank on his birthday and start cycling it as I would't know where to start. My question is, what tank should I get? I know he wouldn't expect a tank like his previous one (a metre long monster!) so I need something small and not cheap looking that will house some guppies (male/female) neon tetras and a cat fish so definitely not a big tank, just good quality. I know the likes of the fluval edge (which I really like) aren't great as they're too small, so what size would I need to keep the fish I know he'd like? I've been to a few independent stores, and petsathome etc, and they all seem to have quite similar tanks - some do look quite plastic-y and I don't like the biorbs because of the acrylic in them. Thank you for your advice! more

Resolved Question: Is my 72 gallon bow front aquarium tempered glass?

I got a 72 gallon bow front aquarium off craigslist, it is scratched but i will buy a glass scratch remover. and i want to install a over flow/ sump returns but there are a few set backs... i know the tank was built on May, 1998 as the stand has a stamp that said so and the stand went together with the tank. It is a 4' Long, 22" high, 18" deep bow front aquarium, it is glass not acrylic.I asked the lady is she knew the manufacturer she bought it from, but she said it was loo long ago and couldn't remember. There is a sicker on the bottom of the tank that says this... "THIS BOTTOM IS TEMPERED GLASS FOR STRENGTH AND RELIABILITY DO NOT DRILL" Now i know the bottom is tempered, but are the sides? Well i need to know if the back is tempered glass, because i want to drill it and add a overflow, and two returns. When i hit the glass with my hand, the bottom and the back sound different. The tempered glass is a deeper sound, and the back "not sure" glass is a higher sound. Also the glass looks just shy of about 1/4" thick, can i still drill it with a diamond drill bit? Thanks in advance.UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! I found a site online and it said you could check if glass is tempered with an LCD screen. Tempered glass will make the screen appear to have lines, regular glass wont. well the bottom had lines, the front bow front had lines, and the back and sides did not have any lines, a nice gray screen. that's it. So this is getting ma a little more exited. What do you think. more

Resolved Question: Estimated gallons for custom tank? 24x20x18?

I want to build a aquarium / fish tank and I'm thinking about 24 long, 20 wide, and 18 high. It would be euro braced for the front and sides, I want to put a false wall in it like a nano cube. Whats the estimated gallon size? Would 1/4 inch acrylic work? more

Resolved Question: How much cheaper is it to build aquarium rather than buying it?

Hi, I have 2 questions about building tanks and I hope people can help me out. Thanks :) So I want to build an aquarium by myself I just want to know how much it will cost for a tank like this (I live in Melbourne, Australia). It will be 2.4 meters long (8 feet) about 90 centimeters wide and about 80 centimeters tall. It will be made of Acrylic (1/2 inch thick) and it will be a fresh water tank. So how much will a tank like this cost to build yourself? I don't know much about building tanks. I thought you just have to screw the bottom piece of the aquarium to the table (that will hold the aquarium) then put glue on all 4 sides and stick the acrylic on the sides then glue the acrylic together. Is there any other processes other than these to building a tank? If there is can you please tell me about it, please try and keep the steps as simple as possbile as I am not an expert in this area. Thanks for answering both of the questions every1 :)I will only have 3 sides acrylic the back side will be what ever material they use for the back that is not transparent (which will make things a lot cheaper). How much would it cost for the long sheet that is at the front (2.4 meters long)? What about eBay? Do you think they have good prices? If not where can I get the cheapest aquariums? It doesn't matter if its a website or a shop as long as I can get these products inside melbourne. more

Resolved Question: How do I bond 3/8" acrylic sheets for a reef aquarium?

I am making an acrylic frag tank that is 48" long by 24" wide by 12" tall. I am using 3/8" thick acrylic. My question is, How should I bond the acrylic sheets? I have heard that weldon products are good, but I can't find any weldon products in my local stores. Are there any other bonding products that will be safe for a frag tank? I found a product called "Amazing Goop Marine" its an adhesive that bonds acrylic and also seals the connections, is this safe/good? Also any other tips that could help me out would be great, thanks. more

Resolved Question: DIY Glass Aquarium - Ugly Silicone Seams?

Hey, I am planning on building my second aquarium to replace our first. Only there is a problem. I wish my aquarium to no longer have edging to hide the ugly mess the silicone makes at the corners. I have already made some research and have found no other alternative other than making an acrylic/plexiglass tank which are known for their leak and scratch problems. Could someone suggest what I could use to create a glass aquarium with neat, clear edging like those with acrylic aquariums? more

Voting Question: Goldfish and Neon Red Moons (A.K.A. Platy Fish, Palties, Moon Fish)?

I have a 50 gal. acrylic tank. It currently has 4 common fantil goldfish in it. Common fantails were developed in America. They are the only fancy tailed breed that truly can compeet with faster single tailed varieties in aquariums and ponds. They are NOT Ryukins (also known as Japanese fantails). Common fantails are the smallest breed of goldfish, eventhough some have been crossed with ryukins. Ryukins tend to be larger and slower than common fantails. Common fantails are sold as tiny 1 in. fish in stores. But they will be 4 to 6 inches when fully grown. Although there are some sources that say the record for this breed was 10 in. Ryukins on average can reach 8 to 10 inches. No word on records for this breed. And other breeds of goldfish can be even larger. The fantils I have are between 1 and 2in. They are all common fantails. They say all glodfish are fine with other species, as long as they are not small enugh for them to eat. Or slow enough for goldfish to catch. And I am well aware of the fact even one fancy gold fish needs 10 gal. of water to be happy and even one single tailed variety needs at least 20 gal. to be happy. I also know each additional goldfish (wheather it is a fancy tail or a single tail) needs at least an additional 10 gallpns to be happy. And I know goldfish need a tank rather than a bowl. And that the tank should be a long tank rather than a high one for all goldfish to give them the swimming room enough to be happy. That is why I got a long 50 gal. tank. And according to what I have learned my setup is fine for the goldfish I have. The question I have is in reguard to anther spcies of fish I decided to place with thesegoldfish. I recently ordered 2 red neon moon fish, a member of the large and growing familly of moon fish. Here is the little of what I know of the red neon moon fish and platies. Moon fish are evidenly a breed of platy fish. I got the red neons because a very good web site on fish stated Variatus could be placed with goldfish. I heard from various other sites this species is the same as a moon fish. Perhaps I got confused somewhere. However, reguardless of any possible confusion, I have two red neon moon fish on the way. The red neons can grow to be 2 to 3 in. They are live bearers. They say these small fish are peacful arround other fish and are hardy. They say palties are fast fish too. They also have simillar enough diets to goldfish that they can share some of the same foods. Just monitor them when you feed them to be sure the fish get their share of the propper flake foods. Palties evidenly have small mouths. And because of this they should only be fed flake foods for tropical fish. Although they, like the goldfish, can also eat small freezdried items and live plant items. Freeze dried Blood worms, freeze dried brine shrimp, blanched lettuce, and blanched spinach are asll items that can b fedo both palties and goldfish. Palties also enjoy planted aquariums with some swimming space, just as goldfish do. And goldfish swimm at all leves of the tank, so do platies. And I hear both species can survie in a compatible temperature range of 75 to 78 degrees. Yet there are some things no one told me about when I ordered the beautiful little red neon moon fish. Moon fish are evidenly a member of the same familly as platies. And well, platies can have baies when they are no more than 2 months old! I have also heard they can change thier sex!! So having two or more platies in the same tank can lead to baby fish (something I was not aware of when I purchased the recomended pair I ordered. OOPS!!! My bad.). Furthermore, I discovered palties can have 250+ babies in one brood!!! And they can have one brood every month!!!! (Oh No! Argh!!!! Too . . . Many . . . Fish!) I have heard you can adopt out the babies, sell them (or donate them) to pet stores, or donate them to the science department at schools. They seem to do well in outdoor ponds in warm climates, where larger fish an natural predators eat them naturally (which helps controll their population). Ihave even heard they cab be used as feeder fish. Sort of like the fate of many live brine shrimp that are fed to fish. Using these beautiful little moon fish as feeder fish is a sad fate. But concindering there can be 250+ babies EVERY month of EVERY year . . . It may be they only way to controll their popullations, if no one eles will take them (or has room and money enough to take them). If the fish I ordered survive and have ospring, I will do what I can to ensure their survival and find someone to take them. Just as I will the original pair of them. They are beautiful little fish. They would be fine if kept by themselves, or in a tank with other fish that are not platies, swordtails, or Variatus. Perhaps guppies and tetras could work well with red noen moon fish, scince they too are small and generally peaceful with other fish species. (But do not take my word for it on this info. here. I am new to platies and moon fis more

Resolved Question: Aquarium sump question, can't i just use this...?

Ok so i really would prefer a sump to my canister filter, they are easier to clean, remove carbon for medical treatments, increase water content, blah blah thing is, i have no money. can i just use a plastic box instead of a glass or acrylic aquarium? as long as it can hold the water and it is safe chemical-wise. I'm getting the box from ASDA (wallmart) or tesco or whatever but i need to know if i can use this first. Thanks for your answers :) more

Resolved Question: 50-55 gal aquarium for 4" angel fish - 15"x36" vs. 12"x48", which is better?

I've got 4 angel fish in a 40-gal aquarium right now and they have clearly outgrown it. I'm going to upgrade to a 50-55 gal aquarium. But I have two acrylic tanks I'm looking at, one is 15"x36", the other is not as deep much somewhat longer, 12"x48". Both are 20" high. What is better for the fish? 1. The tank that's not quite as wide, but a few inches deeper to the back, giving them a decent swim range in all directions, or 2. The tank that's not as deep but much wider, giving them a longer swim range in one direction, but not as much range back to front? (Ideally I would love to get a much larger tank like a 100 gallon 60"x18" for example, but over the past 4 years I've been progressing from an original 10-gal (with 2 gold fish), to a 30-gal (mix of tetras and guppies), to the current 40-gal (just the 4 angels, that started as 1" and are now 4" each), and I'm not too keen on growing it too much larger all at once. I'll get there... but just not now. And yes, I fully agree, larger tanks actually take less work to maintain.) Would love to hear from experienced aquarium owners about the size options and which seems to work better for fish of this size. Thanks! There actually IS a formula, that generally says 1" of fish per gallon, but I think it's up to 1" per 3 gallons for more territorial fish. One of them is actually 6" big as has established herself as the boss... and the other 3 are between 3" and 4". They are all a little territorial and have their spats. I was thinking that maybe the longer tank would give them more security for territoriality... if big momma is on one side and the next big one has declared her territory 3' away on the opposite side, they'd be happier than being 12" apart. Based on the old saying, fences make for good neighbors, I wonder if they make fences for fish tanks? LOL. more

Resolved Question: What do you do about Algae in aquarium?

Hiya. We have had aquariums for over 30 years. Have maintained them with live plants, good lighting, etc. Trops and goldfish. This past Christmas we 'treated' ourselves to a new tank, first new one in 20 years. This tank is a bowfront acrylic. the one other tank we still have is glass, probably 20 years old. Both have live plants, both have plant lighting. Both get algae growth. The bowfront does get indirect morning light if I forget to draw the blinds. It's on the other side of the room from the windows, but the morning light will cross the room. the problem is the algae. While the glass tank gets what looks like the same type of algae--starts as green spots, covers the sides--it wipes off easily with a terry cloth. the bowfront--it sticks like it's welded on. Is it the acrylic? How do you deal with this problem? We have used the recommended brushes which are not supposed to scratch the surface--there does not APPEAR to be scratches, and the surface feels very smooth once the algae is removed. the last time we used a soft abrasive pad that is used on glass range tops. It wasn't easy to remove, but it came off OK. Now, a couple of months later, the algae is back and I dread having to clean off the sides again, as the job is time-consuming and difficult. what do you acrylic tank owners use to clean off algae? Is there a recommended product that will prohibit algae growth and not harm the live plants or the fish? We've had tanks a long time, as I said, but never had such a problem dealing with algae! Before I throw the tank out in the yard, please offer any other methods of cleaning this tank. Thank you! OlddocThanks S-moore. We have 3 chinese algae eaters, and while they keep the rocks clean, the algae on the sides has them baffled. We never tried shrimp. Guess we will! more

Resolved Question: Acrylic nails?

Ladies who have had acrylic nails, I need your help! I am attending a gem and jewelry show to buy some rings so obviously there will be a lot of focus on my hands. My natural fingernails are a nice shape but I would like to have something a little more interesting as I am not very good at painting them (okay, terrible at painting them) I think it would be nice to get a medium length acrylic nail with a french manicure, but I've heard it is horrible for the nails underneath? I am fairly domestic also so have to have my hands in water for cleaning my aquariums and doing dishes. Can they tolerate being in water for an hour to two hours a day? (Maybe a little more for swimming occasionally) How bad are the nails underneath when they come off, and how long do they usually last? Thanks =) more

Resolved Question: Small but big?

I just recently bought an aquarium at Petco. I've been to every pet/fish type store in my area and haven't seen one like this. Has anyone else out there bought this type of aquarium. It's exclusive to Petco, name is Aquatic Gardens, its a 6.6 gallon Bookshelf acrylic aquarium. I'm not sure but I think its 9 or 11 inches deep or 9 or 11 inches tall and either 20 or 24 inches long. It's a great looking aquarium, has a big look to it without all that size. Comes with an outside filter that's wonderfully quite and a flourescent light, hood ect. I'm just curious if I'm the only one that has one of these aqauriums. Let me know if you do and if you've had any problems with it? MLJ more

Resolved Question: I have a large aquarium and I may want to change the design of it.?

My aquarium is 220 gallon acrylic with built in filtration panels that the water flows over and in to the filter. The panels are tall so a lot of floating particles float around in the tank because they are to heavy to float up and go over the top of the panels. My filter is more than adequate size for the tank but those panels are making it hard to work with. I have a Fluval FX5 filter for tanks up to 400 gallons. MY QUESTION IS, CAN I REMOVE THE PANELS WITHOUT HARMING THE INTEGRETY OF MY TANK ??? The tank is rectangular, 8 feet long by 30 inches deep by 20 inches tall. The panels are attached in the back corners of the tank diagonally. and go from the bottom of the tank almost to the top. They are cut like combs to stop larger things from going into the filter. and they are only about an inch and a half from the top of the tank. Any advice would be helpful. more
