Open Question: Corn Snake or Hedge Hog?
Ok so I'm in to animals.Especially marine(have 7 aquariums :) plan to be marine biologist).I had a corn snake and a rat (rat died ,corn snake escaped :( )i get these animals becuz my cats are more or less solitary ,I'm not a dog person, and I can't hold fish :/.So i was wondering if i should get another corn snake or a hedge hog.I like corn snakes becuz they pretty cool :) and I'm in to reptiles.BUT i also know that corn snakes don't really "know" know their care taker. And i want a hedge hog and I've done my research on them and i heard they're kinda play full but if any of you know if that's not true please tell.So which one should i get?
moreOpen Question: Brackish water chemistry problems!?
So i have a brackish water tank that is newly set up (the salinity is about 1.004) and i have a few questions.....
1. I put eco-grow soil into my tank for the substrate, is this okay for a brackish aquarium because i wasnt sure if it was for fresh water only tanks, and will it permently raise/lower the pH?
2. I have genrally freshwater plants in the tank and was wondering how much salt they can take.
3. I have been using simple aqurium salt, should i be using marine salt instead? because i heard that if you use marine salt it will put the pH in a more basic range (8.0-8.2) naturally that is more suited for brackish tanks.
Thank You!

moreOpen Question: Nutrient Cycle in Marine Biome-Coral Reefs?
So, I'm making a biome brochure where you have to include severel different points about your assigned biome. Well, I have the Marine Biome, Specificly coral reefs. When topic we have to include is a nutrient cycle prevelant in the biome. I have found PLENTY of things about the nitrogen cycle in salt water aquariums, but that is obviously different from what I am looking for because the reason that cycle must take place is because all the ammonia can't float away and disperse in the tank- it's stuck there. The only thing I have found that could be what I'm looking for is geoweb.princeton.edu/people/faculty/sigman/sigman.pdf but I can't understand it. I guess I'm stupid.
Could you either supply me with a nutrient cycle and explain it (a link to an explaination isn't as helpful, but I'll take it) or explain that thing up there?^^ lol. Thanks :)
moreOpen Question: What do I do with marine aquarium water?
I'm starting a marine aquarium (fish only) and I heard that you must go get reverse osmosis water for your tank. I'm wondering if it would be possible to put tap water in my tank and then the dechlorinater and then the salt and mix it all and then let it run for 2 or 3 weeks before I put live rock or fish in. Is this possible because it makes sense and less effort.

I went to Petco and bought Nature's Ocean white sand for my dwarf puffer tank, and i specifically made sure it worked for freshwater and the lady said "yes it will work for freshwater tanks". I was just wondering, would i be able to get rid of most of the salt by washing the sand thoroughly and eventually through water changes? Thanks.

I've been keeping African Cichlids for a little over a year now, and was just wondering if Marine Salt is safe or not. The guy at this Cichlid ONLY store I go to said a tablespoon of Marine Salt per 5 gallons would be fine. The reason I'm asking is because I recently bought a big box of Instant Ocean Marine Salt in hopes of setting up a saltwater tank, and it never ended up happening. I've recently run out of my regular Aquarium Salt, and if Marine Salt is fine, I will refrain from buying anymore Aquarium Salt. I also understand that they make a special Cichlid Salt mix, and I understand that would be the best. However, I'm trying to get by with what I've got for the moment. I know someone will ask what kind of Cichlids, so for the record it's a pretty big mix of Mbunas, Peacocks, Labs, Electic Blues, Haps, etc. So far I've had great luck.... *knock on wood*

moreVoting Question: Is this evidence for evolution?
Before you read, I know I know, another one about fish...
The topic today is mollies.
What?
Yes, mollies. Its a cute little fish that people keep as pets. They are often kept in freshwater aquariums, but in truth they are brackish water fish. If you don't know what that is, brackish water is water that has more salinity than fresh water, but not as much as seawater. It may result from mixing of seawater with fresh water. Don't really remember how its made, something about a river entering the sea and the sea water going up the river blah, blah, blah. Anyway (Also as a random side note, they can actually live in marine aquariums if adjusted slowly.)
When they were first starting to be domesticated they were completely brackish water fish, but somewhere down the line they started to be kept as freshwater fish. And while now they can be kept as freshwater fish they much prefer brackish water. (They are much more prone to parasites and diseases in freshwater, and can also get a disease called the "shimmies" where they have trouble swimming. It is unknown if this is caused by the lack of salt.
Well anyway, over time they built up a resistance, after being kept in freshwater, having offspring, and those offspring living in freshwater, those offspring having offspring...yeah. Mollies are always pregnant if kept with a male, or even if impregnated once. (They have the ability to store sperm for upward 5 batches) They give birth every 3 weeks (They are livebearers) and they grow up fast.
Now a days, you actually have to slowly adjust their water to keep them in brackish water, because they have been in freshwater so long! If you don't its very stressful for them and they could actually die.
So, anyway. Now that you have that info, is that evidence for evolution? Is that evolution?Forgot to add somewhere in there I wanted atheists and theists opinions...

moreResolved Question: Help with a chemistry experiment?
Hi, I'm currently doing a chemistry experiment for my Assignment. We have to find an experiment that includes extracting a certain substance and I chose to extract Magnesium. I've found an experiment already but it leaves me with Magnesium Chloride instead of pure Magnesium. Please Help, I'm desperate! I don't mind if you give me a new experiment or just give me ways on how to extract the chloride from the magnesium, I just need this A.S.A.P.! Please help!
This is my current experiment:
Magnesium (Mg) exists in sea water as ions of magnesium. It's typically extracted from sea water on an industrial scale in a procedure known as the Dow Process. Magnesium chloride is used in the manufacture of fire-resistant materials, paper and textiles. It's also a common dicing agent and a precursor in the production of magnesium metal
Step 1: Add slaked lime [Ca(OH2)] to sea water. The magnesium ions (Mg) in the sea water will combine with the slaked lime to form magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] and calcium. Magnesium hydroxide is a solid that will fall to the bottom of the solution as a precipitate and the calcium will remain in the solution as ions. The following equation shows this reaction: Mg + Ca(OH)2 ' Mg(OH)2 + Ca.
Step 2: Separate the magnesium hydroxide from the sea water and add two moles of hydrochloric acid (HCl) for every mole of magnesium hydroxide. This reaction will form a solution of magnesium chloride in water. The following equation shows this reaction: Mg(OH)2 + 2 HCl ' MgCl2 + 2 H2O.
Step 3: Add four moles of water to the magnesium chloride solution for every mole of magnesium chloride. The following equation shows this reaction: MgCl2 + 2 H2O + 4 H20 ' MgCl2 + 6H20.
Step 4: Allow this solution to crystallize as magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2.6H20).
Step 5: Store magnesium chloride as magnesium chloride hexahydrate. Pure magnesium chloride is difficult to store because it absorbs water extremely readily. Magnesium chloride hexahydrate may be dehydrated to magnesium chloride when needed by exposing it to hydrogen chloride gas
How to make seawater
Home uses of seawater include such things as aquariums, holistic treatments and agriculture. Seawater is inexpensive and simple to produce. According to the Seafriends Marine Conservation and Education Center, seawater is a combination of salts mixed with water and gases. While the composition of seawater varies by geographic location, mixing sea salt with tap water most accurately duplicates it at home. Sea salt contains minerals directly from the sea and tap water contains abundant natural minerals like calcium.
Step 1: Determine the quantity of seawater you wish to produce.
Step 2: Pour the tap water into a mixing container that is large enough to accommodate the quantity of seawater you are making. Allow the water to settle for approximately 10 minutes and come to room temperature.
Step 3: Add the sea salt to the water, stirring slowly until completely dissolved. According to Sir Francis Drake High School, you will need approximately 35 grams of sea salt per liter of water or approximately 4 oz. of sea salt per gallon of waterThis is not what I'm giving in, the teacher wanted the specific method, we didn't have to change anything about it. The report will we written separately.
moreResolved Question: I keep seeing people say that 1 inch of fish per gallon is outdated?
I keep seeing this all over Yahoo that one inch of fish per gallon is outdated, but they never tell you how many fish you should keep in a certain tank. Every marine biologist I have spoken to has said that it is 1 inch of fish per gallon of fresh, and 1/2 inch per gallon in salt. Are they outdated? I just spoke with one yesterday and he said that the rule still stands. So where is this other information coming from, and if it is bogus about the fish rule having one inch per gallon ect...., how many fish should you be keeping in oh lets say a 10 gallon aquarium? If the experts are still using this rule, then why are others doubting it?All of you guys have great answers, but what are your sources? Is this your own experience, or have YOU done YOUR research? And as far as Marine Biologist go they know more than you Kylie Ann. Where are your sources? what is your proof? BTW i'm not a beginner I have been keeping fish for 26 years, and followed these rules, and the people I've talked to all agree with me. My fish have all been successful keeping this rule, I just want to know why it is so cruel, because fish mainly stay in one spot in nature to begin with. As long as you give them their own space and places to hide, they should be fine don't you think?Gary C. I keep Saltwater, I don't even mess with fresh. My fish will never reach 20 inches, so that is not my concern. And the Marine Biologists I talk to well some are at the Baltimore Aquarium, I asked their advice before starting salt 2 years ago, they told me 1/2 inch of fish per gallon, and seeing how they have hundreds of aquariums on display, I took it to heart. Sorry that your whole spill was null and void. Also I call the techs at petsolutions.com and liveaquaria.com. they also agree with me. So I have sited some of my resources, where is everyone else getting their info?

Hi,
I was wondering how many gallons I'd need to keep these fish:
1 Koran Angel,
1 Blue Damsel
1 Green Chromis
1 Watchman Goby
1 Violet Goby
1 Coral Beauty Angel
1 False Percular Clownfish
1 Royal Gramma
1 Male Square Anthias
1 Copperland Butterfly Fish
1 Clown Surgeon
1 Regal Blue Tang (Dory Fish)
4/5 Cleaner Shrimp
O.k, I'm aware that that is a lot of fish for a home aquarium, so....
1. Please could you tell me how many gallons I'd need for them (regardless of how many)
2. Tell me if I'd need to change the numbers of each fish so they'd be happier, and also if any wouldn't get along.
3. Give me some smaller stocking ideas for a smaller aquarium, revolving around the fish above. However, the Clownfish must be in there, and it would be good if the Royal Gramma, Blue Damsel and Green Chromis were in there too.
I know I'm asking quite a bit, so I'll REALLY appriciate any Good answers which fullfil the criteria.
Thanks so much = ]Sorry, I meant to put 2 False Percular Clownfish - They obviously like to be in Pairs.Oh, and I would put a lot of Live Rock in there too (as much as I could afford). If I could, maybe some of the easiest to keeo corals too.

Hello all,
I have been working at the local aquarium and I have seen many visitors take fantastic pictures with their fancy cameras. I am also into photography and just recently purchased a Canon Rebel xsi 450D. I LOVE this camera and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a camera that is for travel and small trips.
My question is... how do I take fantastic photos of the fish and other marine animals without having glare or blur from subjects moving to fast. I have done some research but have not come across and suggestions for this camera in particular, so I thought I would ask you guys. I understand the flash can be a good or bad idea. I don't have a rubber hood, so is placing the camera against the glass a bad idea? What setting should I use? Sports, so I could stop a moving subject? Also what should I set my ISO speed to? Any suggestions on how to take pictures of the sharks, which are in very dark waters with little light in the water? Also we have a green sea turtle who is my favorite animal there. We only get to see her from above the water, so what setting/ ISO speed do you suggest there?
Any suggestions? Anything would help right about now.

moreResolved Question: Do I have to throw away my live rock?
Hey guys.
I have set up a new marine aquarium and put in live rock and its been running for a month. Problem is I had a canister attached with cheap carbon. The guy at the pet shop said carbon is phosphate washed and bad. This resulted in very high phosphate levels. I done an 80% water change with ocean water, removed the carbon an its been running for a week now. Phosphate levels are still the same, crazy high.
Pet shop guy said start again, he said I have to throw out my substrate and live rock as it absorbs the phosphates.
I'm new to marine tanks so just wondering if there is a way around this. It was a big expense my live rock I don't think I could afford to replace it.
Thanks guysThanks everyone for your help. I was so worried as it has cost me so much already and I didn't want to buy more rock.
What I mean by cheap carbon is like cheap aqua one stuff. Like cheap brand carbon.
So I'll add carbon again, do another water change and phosphate remover and get advice from a different fish shop lol.
I'm not using RO water as its another expense, I use 90% ocean water and top it up with declorinated tap water.
Any other info would be so much appreciated. You guys have made my day out of this unpleasant circumstance. Thanks heaps.

7 fancy guppies
1 african dwarf frog
&
1 pleco
I've been doing some research on my little fishies, and I found out that my mollies & guppies would enjoy some slightly brackish water. But I'm not sure if my frog & my pleco would mind.
If I was to add marine salt, how much should I add?

Is it ok to use for guppies? What about aquatic turtles?
moreResolved Question: Saltwater Fish Compatibility?
Hi. I have a 100 gallon established saltwater aquarium with a volitan lion fish and a snowflake eel (I also had 2 trigger fish but both have died). I want to stock up my tank a bit more to replace the triggerfish. I've been looking at marine bettas, gold line groupers, and possibly filefish. I like boxfish and cowfish but heard that they can release deadly toxins and want to know how big of an issue that may become. I also want to get a starfish. Any suggestions, advice, information is appreciated! Thanks so much!
moreResolved Question: Marine aquarium inhabitants suggestions for my 220L (50 gallon) aquarium?
I'm setting up a new 220L (50 gallon) saltwater aquarium with a 90L (20 gallon) sump, and don't want to pay for metal halide lighting. I have a few kilos of live rock and a few kilos of live sand as my substrate. I have 3 years of freshwater tropical aquarium experience and am well read on the topic so I know a little about aquarium set up and maintenance. What advice/suggestions do you have for inhabitants for my tank?
Cheers
moreResolved Question: Is this equiptment suitable for my Aqua one 620t in marine ?
I have a Aqua One 620t with built in wet/dry hood filter and heater 130 l
i am thinking of converting the tank into a marine setup and was wondering if this equiptment would do the job :
Lighting: I really dont have a clue, the lights in the hood are standard aqua one flouresents
Would 2 marine blue units on here do the job to keep some soft corals
http://www.aquarium-parts.co.uk/acatalog/AR_620T_Spares.html please look
Protein Skimmer: v2 skim 400
Pump: Koralia 2
Im not having a filter seen as a have a skimmer and live rock
the hood filter will become a refugium with live rock, so that provides some biol filtration
Any advice please give, also i am only 14 but experienced with fish, could you plesae keep suggestions at their cheapest seen as im on a budget
I will also have to buy the salt, master test kit, calcium additive, RO machine, live sand and rock have i missed anything ?
thanks
moreResolved Question: Would you rather swim with dolphins, sea lions, stingrays, or fishes?
I'm trying to convince my parents to let me swim with the animals at sea life park (it's kind of like a mini sea world) for my 16th birthday.
I really want to become a marine biologist one day and I want to do this more than anything in the world! I REALLY want to be able to interact with animals.
So which would you want to do?
Swim with dolphins
Swim with sea lions
Swim with stingrays
Or put on a wet suit and swim in an 18 ft deep aquarium
They all cost the same, except the stingrays is much cheaper..But that's my least favorite of my options...And my favorite two would be swimming with dolphins or sea lions.

I was thinking of putting them in my freshwater aquarium without using the formula or if i put the formula in will the freshwater turn to saltwater and be unsafe for tropical fish?
moreVoting Question: Did Noah have aquariums?
Ok so almost all aquatic environments are so fragile that they require very specific chemical balances in order for all the organisms of the ecosystem to survive. (eg. African lakes have very alkaline, hard water, while the Amazon has very acidic, soft water. And that's not including the the even greater difference between freshwater and marine ecosystems) Many of these organisms wouldn't survive more than a 1-2 hours outside their usual conditions, so how did they survive for 40 days?Darby and Genius Idoit clearly didn't read this properly
