Open Question: What is the pressure on the walls enclosing a wind tunnel?

The wind tunnel is constructed with an enclosed cubic test section such that the test section is 1.5m x 1.5m x 1.5m. The top, bottom, and side walls of the test section are made out of square steel-reinforced plexiglass panels. The lab area outside the test has pressure Patm=101,325 N/m^2 and density of 1.225 kg/m^3. Can the test section withstand a compressive overall force of 30,000N? Other Details- Vi= 15 m/s Ti= 270K density= 1.225kg/m^3 Ai= 15m^2 I got that the velocity of the airflow inside the test section should be 100 m/s. Then from that I know I can calculate the pressure inside the test section. I know the pressure inside the test section will be less too. Do I just find the difference between the pressure and sum up remaining pressures pushing on the outside of the box that were not canceled out? Thanks more

Resolved Question: Dreaming of opening an underwater jazz restaurant?

details: Pretty big underwater restaurant with 2 floors, a bar on each floor. There will be a stage where the band will play. The place will have a fancy air to it, not like a shack on the side of the road. The walls and celing will be composed entirely of plexiglass, but with steel frames to support the structure. Air-conditioning and electricity are a must. Now: the questions: I have many questions to ask about bringing this dream into reality. You can answer any of them, multiple ones or all of them (please), but the one who answers the best and most informative will get best answer. Bottom line: numbers please, none of this 'A lot' stuff. 1. How much do you think the grand total would be (staff, construction, furnishing, food & drinks, band, air conditioning and electricity, ect.)? 2.Now that you have all the details, how much do you think the average, high and low food cost should be? 3.how deep underwater should this be (I want the place to have a 'midnight visit to the bar' look)? 4. Where should this be placed (a lot of fish and wildlife, and a native tongue of English is neccessary)? Thanks so much in advance! Also: 5. Is advertising neccessary, or will the building advertise itself? If advertising should be used, what should the budget be?lol its gonna be MUCH more than 1 million more

Resolved Question: Furniture photography question: how do I eliminate shadows under the crib?

I have to photograph some cribs (and other nursery furniture) for a client. I need your help in figuring out how to eliminate the shadows under the crib, so I can isolate the product shots on a white background with as little Photoshop post-processing as possible. I am using a white muslin background and have illuminated the background enough to make it as white as possible. My problem is the floor. The crib's shadows are falling on the floor and I don't know how to eliminate them, without somehow lighting the crib from underneath. One way is to put the whole crib on a plexiglass sheet and light the sheet from underneath. That will remove the shadows but it's too cumbersome. Besides, in this setup, the background doesn't come out as white, since the plexiglass platform will be raised, which puts a break in the seamlessness of the background. Please help me figure out what studio/lighting setup I need in order to photograph cribs (and other furniture pieces), so that the shadows under the furniture are eliminated. Of course I realize that I can isolate the photos in Photoshop in post processing but I want to minimize the time spent on post processing. I also realize that shadows under the furniture make it look real but the client wants the crib shots completely isolated on white. It gives them more flexibility in using the product shots in other marketing material with different-colored backgrounds. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Note: I am using continuous light (fluorescent) softboxes to light the crib. I am not experienced with strobes.Note: many cribs are completely white and don't make hard and clear edges, especially against a well-lit white muslin background. Isolating them in Photoshop is rather time-consuming. more

Resolved Question: What is the most bendable plastic or glass?

Resolved Question: What material should i use?

I'm trying to make what is essentially a cone shape out of a see-through material. It has to be a tough material meaning if i drop it, it wont break but i also want the tip of the cone to be sharp enough to say... mark up some wood. Also, I want it to be able to withstand metal gliding or plating. Since material of this type wont be found in a cone shape, it has to be a material i can shape into a cone myself. I have looked at artificial sapphire but that isn't easily shaped nor is it very tough. I've looked into plexiglass but can that withstand plating and how easy is it to mold? All help is appreciated.I'm willing to spend a good amount and I will be working with gold when plating. I am trying to get the coloration here so i'm not worried about that but I was worried about the plastic not being able to withstand the acid. And by sapphire being not hard enough what I mean was although its hardness is 2nd only to diamond, it cracks more easily then glass. Adding a diamond tip or something is a very good idea, is resin easy to work with and is it durable?Sorry I forgot to add that it will have approximately a 1.5 inch height with a 1.25 inch base so not very big. The wood example was just that, I don't actually intend to scrape up some wood with this I just want it to be able to stay in one piece without bending or becoming misshapen were it to be under that stress. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this prologue?

This is the first time I've ever tried writing one...I would like you to be completely honest with me on it. I'm a big girl, I can take it. :) P.S. I know Y!A has some problem with paragraphs...they got screwed up. November 2011 Underneath Berlin, Germany “Congratulations, men, on our first successful procedure,” congratulated American scientist Dr. Howard Blakely. His colleagues were gathered around his computer, which carefully monitored his experiment’s vitals. Separated by a plexiglass wall, Experiment number fifty seven was just waking up. German scientist Dr. Hans Vorlich watched with almost giddy excitement. “She is doing better than any of her predecessors. We may have done it this time, Blakely.” Experiment Fifty Seven sat up woozily, still shaking off the effects of the anesthetic. She looked around with a confused face. This was not her original hospital room. This one had a huge glass mirror on it, and three blank white walls. She scrunched the thin cream colored sheet on her cot. Getting up, she looked at herself in the mirror, seeming more and more confused. Instead of her eyes being warm, chocolate brown, they were sunflower yellow. Her hair was gone. It had been shaved to prepare for her scheduled surgery to remove her brain tumor. Now the stubble seemed orange instead of warm honey blonde. Behind the fake mirror, one of the Asian doctors watched with no expression. “I wonder how long it will take her to figure out that we did more than just remove that tumor.” Dr. Blakely pressed his lips together. “Watch and wait, my friend, watch and wait. Experiment Fifty Seven has come farther than any of our other subjects preceding her.” In the white room, the experiment in question was still gazing at what she saw to be a mirror, trying to figure out why she looked different. She cracked her knuckles, her signal nervous trait, and noticed that her fingernails were longer, and more pointed. She felt her ears. They too seemed more pointed. She heard a faint click, and her ears swiveled to the noise. Things were starting to fall into place. Panicky, walked over to her bed. She looked at a random spot in the ceiling. “Where am I?” she shouted at the empty walls. “What did you guys do!? Where’s my mom?” A French doctor sighed and looked away from the panicky girl. “Here we go…” she said. Experiment Fifty Seven began walking around the room, searching for a way out. Walking, jogging, now running around, desperately looking for an escape. “Please? Where’s my mom? Can I go home?” she called, over and over again. The French doctor looked strained. “Don’t do this to her!” The French doctor begged Dr. Blakely, who was at the controls. “Do you her to self-destruct? Do you want her to end up like the other fifty six subjects before her?” Dr. Blakely inhaled through his nose, watching the panicked girl run around at dizzying, panicked speed. “Fine, fine. We will tell her. She survived this long. Just hope this one doesn’t self destruct like the others after she knows.” He pulled a microphone near to his mouth. “Sarah, this is Dr. Howard. How are you feeling, dear?” he said in a kind voice. “What did you do to me? I’m different! Where’s mom? What’s wrong with my ears?” Sarah pounded these questions at Dr. Blakely rapid fire, her voice high and thin. “Sarah, calm down. You will damage your stitches,” Dr. Blakely said in the same soothing voice, “ We did some extra things to you while you were under. Those things have made you a better human, Sarah. You have superior sight and hearing now. You won’t have to worry about that tumor, either. Its gone.” “I want my mom.” She said, her voice watery and scared. “I didn’t want this weird stuff. Let me go home.” “I’m afraid we can’t do that, Sarah. You see, your mother thinks you died during surgery. Brain surgery is quite tricky, I’m afraid.” “NO!” Sarah shouted, pounding on the wall she was nearest to. “Let me go with my mom!” Her eyes began to fill with tears. Back in the control room, the French doctor frowned and gripped the back of a chair so hard her knuckles turned white. “Stop being cruel. This wasn’t what I was told was going to happen. Let her see her mother.” Dr. Blakely smiled cruelly. “Sorry, Giana, but this is the way it has to be. We can’t send her out in public like that. It wouldn’t be good for us.” The French woman glared angrily at the American scientist, speechless with rage. “You used me!” was all she could think of to say. “You used me to alter a little girl and tell her mother that we failed as surgeons!” Blakely waved her off. “This is for the good of man, Giana. Remember that.” The French doctor pointed a furious finger at the little girl crying in the white room. “That is nothing towards the good of man.” She hissed. “That is the cruel treatment of a young girl with too much on her plate already!” Dr. Blakely ignored her and presses a button on the keyboard of his computer. Resolved Question: Is the "office powerpath" a very obvious phony who is there on sufferance ?

<From an interview with the artist Your paintings have a very physical presence. Physical experience is something I aim for in my paintings. The act of painting itself is very physical and my movements are determined my physical size and capabilities: Large sweeping movements and small ones, quick or soft to determine the patterns and forms that emerge. To this is added the action of the materials as I mix oil paints and water. Yes, this is what gives us the impression that the paintings have to some degree painted themselves. I mix the oils in different solutions and the choice of colours is also very important. Lately I have been using colour scales of the same colour. These can nonetheless be very varied to provide a chromatic depth to the paintings. This also accounts for the clear gradations that appear when I start to agitate the mixtures on the surface of the painting. I also use a lot of water. The plexiglass has sides glued onto the main surface so as to form a shallow tray when it is laid down on the floor. With the liquid mixture floating in this tray the slightest difference in the level of the floor starts to affect the painting as the water, which is heavier, collects in the lowest places. How much do you then intervene in the process? I see myself as a gardener who sets something growing and then tries to tend it as best he can. I assist the painting in its own growth and do not need to have absolute control. Each movement is determined by the one before and forms a web of strokes on the surface of the painting. There are no plans or sketches, nothing is predetermined except the size, the colours and the materials used. The painting on which I work is actually the backside of the painting as it will be exhibited. I don't see the final painting until it as finished and I can watch it as a spectator, a perspective totally different from the one that is involved in making the painting. The actual mounting is really part of the work, is it not? When it is mounted on the wall the side that I worked on is turned to the wall and the white wall - a neutral space, nothing - reflects light though the semi-transparent painting. The image appears as shadows reflected from the white wall, reflections of nothing which nonetheless can define it. The Chinese think of the white paper and nothing, an emptiness, and define it as space in a few strokes. I want my paintings to have this association with emptiness and light, to grow in the light. I think of a comment from Jean Arp about the Concrete artists: "These artists do not want to copy nature. They do not wish to reproduce but to produce. They wish to produce as a plant wish produces a fruit and is unable to produce a still life, a landscape, or a nude." So the title of the exhibition in Hafnarborg is a kind of manifesto, is it? I wish to emphasise that the creation of the painting and the painting itself are physical processes. That is why I describe my method in such detail. The physical gestures are synonymous with the thought that goes into the painting, they are the thoughts. In the case of the larger paintings I am even standing in the painting as I am working on it, so my whole posture and every movement enters into it. The movement is thought and the though is like a movement, a gesture which accomplishes meaning, and this is really just an illustration of being in the world is like. The philosopher Merleau-Ponty always insisted on this gestural perspective on our being saying: "We must ... avoid saying that our body is in space or in time. It inhabits space and time." The actions of the painter exemplify this. Merleau-Ponty's work on the phenomenology of perception turns on the idea of the "body subject", the imbodied subject. Yes, he insists that we cannot separate our percieved world and our perspectival placement in it from our idea of ourself. We are not abstract beings looking out from someplace inside our heads through our eyes into the world. Instead we are always engaged with the world. The outcome of my work is that each viewer sees in effect his own aesthetic solution to his own situation. I myself am most pleased when the paintings surprise me and that is one reason why I work with the insoluable elements of oil and water. So that is also why you relinguish some of the intellectual and aesthetic control over the process. It is analogous to walking without knowing where you will end up or what you will encounter along the way, or to planting a seed and nursing it without knowing what will grow from it. The plastic base precludes any invisible corrections, the process and the result are one and the same and everything is visible and transparent. Insofar as the works express something or say something they express that gestural language which carries from the gesture of painting the surface to the gestures of the viewer as he examines it from his perspectiv...e in the gallery or museum. Your work is remeniscent of the heroic abrstaction of the New York school but at the same time it comes close to a kind of minimalism with the almost monocramatic surfaces and the choice of an industrial material as a base. Is this a contradiction? I don't see my work as a statment against painting as a traditional medium or as any sort of statement at all. I aim for a transparent presentation of my ideas as embodied in the process, there is no ironic gesture involved. I try to achieve a kind of nearness or presence in my work which I hope to communicate to the audience. Jón Proppé more

Resolved Question: My Zebra Danios Being Bullied, What to do?

Ive gotten my larger tank and i've gotten two zebra danios to keep my betta happy. I know, they do good in large groups, right? WELL... I thought theyd be okay and they were getting along at first, but my fat danio is picking on my small one. He chases him constantly, and now his tail fin is ripped. My betta likes the company, but apparantly my larger danios does not. He chases and nips. I dont have a divider... What can I use as one? Plexiglass? I have a seperate 5-gallon (unfiltered) I can put the larger danios in. What do I do about the littleguy? Hes not swimming well now and hes not a happy camper. The larger danio is too overwhelming for him. I got both from Walmart, and I dont think they have a return policy, and if so, it's a crappy one, so returning to that Walmart isnt an option. All 3 fish are in a heated filtered 10 gallon. I'm doing a water change now.Turns out, as I was doing a water change in the dark, the bigger fish suddenly became... Dead, while the thinner one is more... Active. more
