Open Question: Can u guys tell me the most important details in this agriculture article?

TITLE = Progress on Vaccine for 'Ich,' Bane of Fish Farms and Home Aquarium Hobbyists ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2010) — Tests of the potential vaccine against "Ich" ― the dreaded "white-spot" disease that plagues fish in commercial fish farms, public aquariums, pet fish retail outlets, and home aquariums ― are raising hopes for finally controlling the disease, scientists reported at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS). ________________________________________ "Outbreaks of the parasitic disease caused by Ichthyophthirius (Ich) can result in losses of 50-100 percent of fish," Dehai Xu, Ph.D., said in presenting the results. "The disease is very common, and almost every home fish hobbyist has encountered it. Once the parasite infects fish, and starts growing in the skin, fins, and gills, there is no really effective treatment. Ich causes losses estimated at $50 million annually. It would be much better to prevent the disease." As an indication of the difficulty in treating Ich outbreaks, Xu used the example of an infection that strikes a commercial fish farming pond, which might have a surface area equal to 10 or 20 high school football fields. The typical treatment involves pouring in a solution of formaldehyde, a potentially toxic substance. Hundreds of gallons might be needed, and farmers might have to repeat the treatment several times. Even after treatment, the fish would be at risk of reinfection if they encountered the parasite again, he said. "To vaccinate against Ich, you would need much less medication, and it would not pose an apparent threat to the environment," Xu pointed out. "And you would need just one treatment to make the fish immune for life." Xu explained that efforts to develop an Ich vaccine have focused on use of so-called "trophonts," which are the infective stage of the Ich parasite's life cycle. Trophonts burrow into a fish's skin, fins, and gills, causing the white skin spots characteristic of the disease. Those efforts have been hindered, however, by gaps in scientific knowledge about how fish develop protective immunity to trophonts. Xu and colleagues, Drs. Phillip Klesius and Craig Shoemaker, who are with the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Auburn, Al., set out to fill those gaps. Their study evaluated influence of vaccine formulation and doses of vaccine on protective immunity of channel catfish against Ich. The results showed that vaccination with live Ich theronts and trophonts killed with high-frequency sound waves stimulated production of protective antibodies in the catfish. "This study demonstrated that vaccines against Ich induced protective immunity and could provide a unique solution to prevent this parasitic disease through vaccination," Xu said. "An Ich vaccine would have great impact by preventing the disease, minimizing loss of valuable fish and increasing profitability of aquaculture." Xu noted that the study was a small, laboratory-scale endeavor, with unsolved problems on the road ahead to a commercial vaccine. One, for instance, involves producing a large quantity of Ich antigen for the vaccine and then formulating a vaccine that can be easily administered to large numbers of fish in a "bath" or in food, rather than by injection. In the bath approach, fish would be kept in a container or an enclosure with water containing the vaccine. This study is within the component of ARS National Program 106-"Aquaculture" to improve health and welfare of aquatic animals. Xu and colleagues hope their study will bring more attention to the research to combat this disease. more

Open Question: Need solution to increasing cord length for outdoor use of aquarium filter in container pond?

I bought a Fluval submersible filter, but the cord is too short to go from my container pond to my covered outdoor outlet and I am worried about the use of an outdoor extension cord to my outside outlet. Resolved Question: Things I should know about keeping a betta?

I have a 10 gallon tank (cycled, heated, filtered) and would like to keep a male or female betta in it. What should I know about bettas? My brother has small pellets left over from when he had his betta and I'd feed it those, brine shrimp I've raised myself and possibly mosquito larva collected from aquarium water left outside my window. I've heard different things about bettas though. Some say that bettas prefer small, enclosed spaces. Some say the bigger the tank, the betta. Others say that if you put them in a tank you should have plenty of plants and hiding places for them. I know that the betta's natural environment is muddy rice paddies and ponds...But even though they're shallow, they span for miles in some cases. I've know that bettas get air from the surface of the water, but I also heard that they only do this when the oxygen level in the water is low...I've heard many things and I'm not quite sure what is true and what isn't. Fill me in? (: more

Resolved Question: I have a question for Pondlady, or whoever else may know the answer?

Will floating Fairy Moss, most commonly seen in ponds, survive if I put it in an indoor 55 gallon aquarium with florescent lighting? I accidentally received some of this and I do not want it in my large 8,000 gallon pond with skimmer and bio-falls. (Aquascape system) I do understand that the fish may eat it, but if they don't, will it survive, or just rot and cloud the water? Also, I have an AquaClear 110 filter in my aquarium, if that makes a difference. more

Voting Question: Turtles and tadpoles?

Open Question: how many times a day/week/month should i add "Rift Lake Cichlid Salt" to my aquarium?

I have a 20 gallon fresh water tank with some goldfish and a baby big mouth bass. I caught the bass at my gparents pond, and ive had him for a week. he was doing fine for couple days. eating and happily swimming around, but at about day 4 he started showing signs of distress...his tail locked up and he could only swim with his front fins. when i would pick him up, he would just twitch his middle and wave his front fins and try to get away. i wanted to get some cichlids cause i thought that might cheer him up, so i went to the local pet store where a man told me, that if i wanted to keep carnivorous fish, i needed a buffer, because those types of fish need a higher PH. apparently i was slowly poisoning him with the low PH... so i got the buffer, put it in the tank, and watched. the next day the bass (Killer) was allot better!! he was much more alert, and was even trying to swim. (b4 i left to the pet store, he was listing and locked up, and my family thought he would be dead by the time i got back...boy were they surprised!) i put a pinch in every day after that, and he continues to get better...but the problem is...when i bought the buffer, the man didnt tell me how much i was supposed to put in, and i completely forgot to ask. so here i am, trying to find the answer on the internet and having know such luck. i dont want to put to much in, and i dont want to not have enough, and have him laying on his side dying again. help!!um...i rly dont care about the goldfish at the moment. im not keeping them. they are just supposed to be food for the bass when he gets bigger. im planning on getting a 50-70 gallon tank when i make the rest of the money. i have a filter and pump, so i doubt that i dont have enough oxygen. that also didnt rly answer my Q... hes getting better so i need to know how much to add once i get the bigger tank. for now...hes fine in the 20 gallon, and the goldfish can deal until they...dont have to anymore.oh! also, my tank is warm enough for cichlids at the moment. although, im NOT going to get them until i get my bigger tank. when i get the bigger one il have to get a heater...cause by that time it will be winter. i need 80$ more and il have enough for all of it. and with my job that will be no time flat. so Killer will be fine until i get the bigger one, and he'll have some cichlid friends to chase goldfish with!! :) more

Resolved Question: BIG PROBLEM red eared slider?

so we bought a turtle on craigs list to be a classroom pet for my mom. lol and the ppl said that it was a eastern painted turtle. Well we took it home and did research on it..and we found out that its actually a red eared slider and needs a 120 gallon tank!!!!! Stupid craigs list hillbillies....grrrrrrr. So now we are stuck with this poor turtle who has been living in a 10 gallon aquarium his whole entire life and is 6 in long. We have a 50 gallon tank but my mom said no beacause its wayyyy to big to bring anywhere. So then i suggested getting a pre formed pond but that really wont work because its going to be in my moms classroom. So we have a 40 gallon tank and i know that is WAYY too small but i always take him outside during the day and let him crawl in the grass and swim in the kiddie pool. So will the 40 be ok for the time being? PLEASE dont criticize me. Im doing my besti CANT use the 50 more

Resolved Question: What cat fish or loach will go well with koi, if any?

I have got 5 koi in a aquarium. I am growing them, and by the time they reach 6 inches they will be moved out in to a garden pond for further growth, while new 2" koi will be moved in to the aquarium. What type of cat fish or loach would suit the same conditions, and live along side koi about 2-6 inches?Maybe i didn't make my self clear. I have a HUGE pond, bigger then most king sized koi pond in my gardon. The koi in my tank are nothing more then 5 inches. I am growing them in my tank, and when they get to big i will move them in to a even bigger tank, and then when they get to 10 inches they will be set free in my pond. I know everything i need to know about koi. I am asking about CAT FISH OR LOACHES. more

Resolved Question: Goldfish tank water brown, gold fish sick?

I'm a cat lover and never had interest in fish keeping. My cat brought home a live but injured goldfish just over two years ago. I rescued it, but it can't go back to a pond because of its injuries. (It lost a lot of gut through a hole in its belly, and now it excretes through the hole and doesn't get bigger because it's underfed, but I hate to kill it because otherwise it seems quite happy.) I bought a second fish to keep it company and a 20 litre tank, on the advice of the local aquarium shop. I have gravel, no plants, a pump filter containing charcoal, and I replace the charcoal every month, the filter when it starts to break up. I rinse the filter in pond water every week to keep it clean, and I replace about 5 litres of the water. Last summer someone else's cat caught a third gold fish and I was black mailed into taking it - threat of it being eaten by the finder's Koi Carp otherwise. Now I read that my tank is criminally too small for the poor fishes, but no one will re-home them for fear of infections. Not only is the water filthy and brown despite repeated treatment with something from the fish store, but the fish are now lethargic, not feeding and two out of the three have big sores on their rear flanks in the same place. The biggest of the three doesn't have any sores....... I think he is attacking the two smaller fish. I put medication in the tank, but to use the water cleaner and the medication the charcoal has to come out. Is it okay to do a daily 20% water change? I don't mind doing that since the fish go lively again when there's fresh water, even though it stays brown. I use a water conditioner from the fish store, and never put in untreated tap water. I let it stand overnight to be the same temperature too. I would like to rehome the two larger fish and keep the disabled one, maybe with a companion of a species that won't grow big. I can't euthanise her after two years, just because she's making extra work for me, but clearly three fish, two of which have doubled their size in a year, to over three inches long, is far too much for a 20 litre tank. more

Resolved Question: Do fish do better with absolute minimum care?

My goldfish outside in the pond have been living for 3 years, the water is so green that you can't even see through it. And my fish I sometimes forget to feed. I feed him maybe twice or once a week and he's doing extremely well as well. My friends fish? They're in this amazing aquarium type tank with all of these fancy filters and stuff you put in the water to make the chemicals go and his fish are like, dying all the time. more

Resolved Question: Ideas for a small goldfish pond?

I just posted a question about a giant flower pot as a water garden on the front porch, but I also want to build one in the back yard so I can enjoy it from my bedroom window while I'm working at my desk. The problem is, that it has to be semi-temporary. I plan on moving out in a few years, and no one will be here to maintain it and enjoy it. I can do a preformed pond, but I don't know if I want to bury it or keep it above ground. I just can't figure out how to "integrate it" into the land around the back yard, since its just a big open yard. Since I'll be leaving, I don't want to spend a lot of time adding rocks and plants around it, so it will basically be a water hole (with plants IN the pond) in the yard. Any suggestions? Should I just stick with the front porch idea and maybe get an aquarium for my room? more

Voting Question: What do i need to house a turtle?

My friend bought me one. I love turtles. But i'm a little concerned about what to get for it. I'm only 14, so low budget, obviously. Its a Mississippi Map turtle. Its a water turtle, i believe. She hasn't given it to me yet. I looked online, and i know that i need : aquarium, rocks, water pond & a basking lamp. should i need anything else? and how often do i take it out and refill the tank with clean water? what type of water do i need? would it harm the turtle if i painted and clear coated the rocks? can it eat green leaf lettuce, as well as turtle pellets? someone, please help. i want the turtle to be comfortable & happy. more

Resolved Question: Goldfish Pond Experiment?

If I were to release a school of goldfish (10-20 fish) into a temporary pond, would they survive? What I mean by temporary is a pond created by the water flow of melted snow down the mountains. The biggest of these temporary ponds I would estimate is close to 70 feet long and 30 feet wide, with a max depth of about 4 feet. There is actually a string of 4 or 5 ponds connected by a medium sized creek, which enters each pond by means of small waterfall. These ponds last from February until late may when they dry out. They are usually inhabited by frogs, damsel fly nymphs, tadpoles, diving beetles, whirli-gigs, water skitters, water spiders, water boatmen, back swimmers, mosquito larvae, and other water beetles. The ponds used to also support dragon fly nymphs, fire salamanders, mud puppies, giant water bugs, and water scorpions. However in recent years these animals have been no where to be found. Anyways, in mid to late march, the water has warmed up to support alot of life. So I was wondering, if I were to release gold fish into these waters, could they survive in such water conditions? Obviously there would be possible predation, but would they have any chance at all? The experiment would basically go like this: 1. Fish are released into pond(s). 2. Bodies of water connecting ponds will be dammed, disallowing the fish from straying away from the group, while still allowing water flow. 3. Fish will be fed daily at first, then will be continually given less and less, will eventually learn to find food on their own. 4. Weekly measurements will be made. 5. Once the ponds begin to dry and/or get too warm, remaining fish will be relocated either to an aquarium tank or to a pet store. Now I know that releasing animals into the wild is illegal, but I would like to point out that these ponds and creeks are not connected to any year round body of flowing water, and the ponds will be dammed anyway to ensure the fish stay in the pond until it starts to dry up. Also the fish will be monitored a few hours everyday. Your thoughts?First, thanks for the feedback :D. I know the goldfish are pond fish, but this is an uncontrolled pond when it comes to how fast and how much the water flows. The temp of the water and what lives in it are decided by the elements and mother nature. So I wasn't sure how well they would do :/. I wish I could somehow continually circulate the water through out the ponds, but it would require a constant water source being pumped into the ponds to make up for evaporation. The electricity bill would be through the roof, which I really wouldn't mind if I had a steady income. more

Resolved Question: If I had a fish aquarium could I make rain clouds appear?

If I had a fish aquarium could I make rain clouds appear? Don’t clouds appear from rain being evaporated or something into the air and blah blah, etc? Lol God, I had a weird dream and now I’m curious. Not even sure how to ask this question, so bear with me please... lol If I took a fish 3 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet in height with a lid. I had a fan sealed to the side of it where no air could escape. If I put a layer of grass with a few ants, crickets/bugs, and had some kind of little pond/lake/puddle. Would the fan make that lake evaporate and make little rain clouds floating near the top of my aquarium if it was all completely sealed off and nothing could escape? I’m just wondering if it would be possible to make rain clouds or something appear/ basically a small ‘earth’ in a fish aquarium...lol It would be cool if it was possible and I really do hope you all understand what I am trying to say...lol Also, I apologize if this is in the wrong category. Tell me the correct one & I will switch it. Thanks for all related answers! If it was possible would you try it? : ) more

Resolved Question: Introducing New Fish -Rainbow / Dwarf Shrimp: Are they toxic to other fish species?

My parents recently acquired some new fish for the aquarium. We have had a balanced tank for a long time now with no real big problems. Our tank has been filled with a variety of Tetras from Neon and Black Tetras to some Phantoms and some bottom feeders, we even had a male Beta and they were all getting along great. We did introduce some Red-Eyed Tetras to the tank but we quickly returned of them as they started to become aggressive with the Beta and chew on his tale. A few days after we removed those Red-Eyed Tetra and introduced the new tetra to the tank, Green Fire Tetra and some others that were more suited for pond water. Our Beta didn't like them, though they didn't have a tail to make them angry they were not a Tetra either. So we moved them to the pond. Anyway we also got two shrimp as well. One of the shrimp has disappeared and could be molting but shortly after that shrimp vanished our Beta started hanging out at the bottom of the aquarium and then died last night. It was heart breaking as he was the star of the show. Anyway, I wanted to know if perhaps the introduction of some new fish could have made the water toxic to the beta? The water temperature is fine so that is not an issue. Or if it is possible that the shrimp that was going to be molting could have become a victim to the Beta and made him sick. I know they are bottom feeders and I was wondering if they could be toxic to other fish if eaten. We still have one visible shrimp left and I wanted to know if we should remove him, due to the fact that I notice some of our Phantoms and larger Tetra take an interest in him when he is swimming through the water and not blending in with the ground or our drift wood. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please any links or helpful information would be great. I have looked up some of this information but I am still missing some keys to the puzzle, specifically those listed above. Thank you for your time. more

I have a experience with gold fish, bettas and moquito fish/pond minnows, so if it's a little tricky I could probably handle it. I've always had bad luck with gold fish, so i don't think I'll get one of those. I might get a betta, but I have one already in a separate tank and so does my sister. I like fancy guppies and neon tetras, and they also sell GloFish which are these fish that I think are slightly genetically altered so they come in true neon colors. I'm open to pretty much everything, but it needs to be pretty small and not super high maintenance. more

Resolved Question: Getting a goldfish, but have a few questions?

-Ok, I want to get one goldfish and I'm getting it a 29 gallon tank. When I get the goldfish (calico fantail, or calico fancy tail, its got a fancy tail and is black, white, and orange) its going to be super tiny. Its going to be the tiny chubby ones. But it says at the store grows 12". and I don't know if the 29 would be enough... But I can't get over 29 gallon tank. -Should I put live plants in since goldfish have been known to pig out on them? -If I get a cave, how big should the opening be, I mean it maybe tiny, but fish grow fast and I don't want him/her to get stuck in the cave. -If I got 2 goldfish would it be better? I mean wouldn't 1 get lonely? Or should I put some Emerald corys that are too big for my 10 gallon in there with it? Because goldfish have been known to try and eat them... -I'm going to get a air pump. Stick the air stones in some like caves so it'll be bubble caves, anyways, would that be good? -Should I get a tiny heater, I mean one for 5-15 gallons, so that the water won't get too cold in the 29 gallon? -Could I feed the goldfish bloodworms? -I mean like some fish, well they CAN grow big (like clown loaches) but in the home aquarium they don't, I mean so the goldfish could only grow 8-10" right? -I will cycle the tank and all, (with fish food) but why do people always say use ammonia? I mean yeah its in the water, but ammonia is harmful to humans too! So could i just use the fish food cycle? Or would it be too less ammonia, since goldfish make BIG messes? Thanks for reading and answering. =) Also I will not get any fish until I have a tank set up for them. No matter how much that fish at the store is the "perfect" goldfish. I mean there's going to be another "perfect" fish. I also have bettas, and corys. I did have neons but they didn't work out so well....I gave them to a friend who put them in like a school of 10+ neons. So if the goldfish doesn't work out, my friend will take it. She has more goldfish and koi then the petstore! But then again, she's got big ponds, big tanks, etc... Thanks again. -Angie =]that usually doesn't work. Because fantails don't grow that big, they're more fat then long. So yeah! And it says minimum tank is 30 gallons and I trust a fish encyclopedia then you! (not you, Yes, I do dare) 1 gallon per 1" of fish isn't right now is it? You can have 11 fish in a 10 gallon which are 1"!tap water is FINE with my other fish, just add dechlorinater, wait, and add. bottled water is always too filtered, and the fish's osmosis process if thrown out of whack. I'm asking for questions, I already know how to care of a fish tank. I have one already. more

Resolved Question: When an aquatic plant is banned for sale in a state, is it still allowed to be shipped in from out of state...?

...for use in a backyard man-made pond and/or in an indoor aquarium? It says it's illegal to sell, breed or introduce them to the state's waters. Does that also mean they can't be used in people's personal aquariums and such? Or bought online and shipped in from out of state for that purpose? They would never be near any natural water source like a lake or river, just for use in my koi pond and indoor aquarium. Anyone know for sure? more

Resolved Question: Could a aquarium ornament be turned into a fountain spout?

I'm getting ready to bring a indoor pond into my home, and I've been looking for the 'right' fountain spout, unfortunately, I can't find the one I'm looking for. I was looking at aquarium decor and found a Top Fin Balinese Dragon Aquarium Ornament that would make an awesome spout. Could it be turned into a fountain spout? If so, how? This is the ornament- http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752280The decoration is hollow, it has airline tubing in it, with an airstone in it's mouth. It can be removed. I was thinking it would be easy to replace the tubing and stone with tubing for the water.http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752280 11.5 Tall by 10 wide, he was made to blow bubbles out of his mouth.the entire decor piece is 10 wide, but the dragon is skinny, not sure exactly how big. more

Resolved Question: Is this a good habitat for our toads?

Long story short my husband and I found two baby toads and one is injured so we decided to keep them. I thought I had a five gallon tank but we must have gotten rid of it so I found a pretty large platic container. (about 6 or 7 inches deep and maybe 14x14). The toads are little so we are getting them an aquarium when they get larger. I figured having their natural invironment around them would be best so I filled the plastic tank with about 2 inches of dirt and leveled the top of the dirt with the rim of a bowl thats down in the tank that i filled with small decorative pebbles so they could have a small pond to walk right into and easily get out of. and i layed some areas of the dirt with clovers grass leaves and i put a stick in there for them to climb on or hide behind. and a few larger flat rocks for them to perch on plus we have a screen lid so it will be perfectly ventilated but they wont be about to get out. Does this sound okay? and how long should i keep it this way before i change the dirt and grass because you wont really be able to tell when they pee and poop in the dirt. and incase any one wonders we got them small crickets from petsmart to eat. This will be fine until they get older and we get them a tank right? and was the dirt a good idea or should i just have done bedding. Sorry so many questions Blahhh!!!! we have 3 dogs a cat 2 turtles and a mouse but we sadly know nothing about toads. its a folwers toad, i know that much. more

Resolved Question: Sarah had learned that ancestral (Carboniferous era) dragonfly species were much larger than extant dragonfly?

A farm pond, usually dry during winter, has plenty of water and aquatic pond life during the summer. One summer, Sarah returns to the family farm from college. Observing the pond, she is fascinated by some six-legged organisms that can crawl about on submerged surfaces or, when disturbed, seemingly "jet" through the water. Watching further, she is able to conclude that the "mystery organisms" are ambush predators, and their prey includes everything from insects to small fish and tadpoles. Sarah had learned that ancestral (Carboniferous era) dragonfly species were much larger than extant dragonfly species are, with wingspans of 70 cm. This struck her as odd, because she had also learned that one of the things that keeps insects small is their relatively inefficient respiratory system. Which two hypotheses might help account for the large size of ancestral dragonflies? 1. If the atmosphere during the Carboniferous had featured a higher oxygen content than the modern atmosphere, then tracheae might have been sufficient means for oxygen delivery to the interior tissues. 2. If large size was a drawback, then the large dragonflies underwent extinction, which explains why all extant dragonflies are smaller. 3. If the ancestral dragonflies had possessed muscles that permitted effective ventilation of the tracheae, then the tracheae might have been sufficient means for oxygen delivery to the interior tissues. 4. If ancestral dragonflies existed during greenhouse conditions, then they must have survived by decreasing their activity levels, no longer capturing prey in flight. Thus, for them, an ineffective respiratory system was sufficient. A. 1 and 4 B. 1 and 2 C. 2 and 3 D. 2 and 4 E. 1 and 3 question 2 An elementary school science teacher decided to liven up the classroom with a salt-water aquarium. Knowing that salt-water aquaria can be quite a hassle, the teacher proceeded stepwise. First, the teacher conditioned the water. Next, the teacher decided to stock the tank with various marine invertebrates, including a polychaete, a siliceous sponge, several bivalves, a shrimp, several sea anemones of different types, a colonial hydra, a few coral species, an ectoproct, a sea star, and several gastropod varieties. Lastly, some vertebrates - a parrotfish and a clownfish - were added. She arranged for daily feedings of copepods and feeder fish. One day, little Tommy (a student in an under-supervised class of 40 fifth graders) got the urge to pet Nemo (the clownfish) who was swimming among the waving petals of a pretty underwater "flower" that had a big hole in the midst of the petals. Tommy giggled upon finding that these petals were sticky feeling. A few hours later, Tommy was in the nurse's office with nausea and cramps. Microscopic examination of his fingers would probably have revealed the presence of A. spines. B. spicules. C. nematocysts. D. a radula. Resolved Question: Fish not accepting new fish to the pond?

I have 2 fish in a pond and I added one of my goldfish from my aquarium yesterday and apparently the old fish have been chasing him around constantly and he got full of air and was stuck swimming on his side, so we removed him and put him in a separate bowl and he's okay now. But what I want to know is, is this some sort of territorial thing and will it ever be all right to put him back in the pond?Yeah, I did the bag thing before I put him in just so the water temperatures were the same and they didn't seem to notice. They are all goldfish, and the 2 already in the pond are roughly 4 or 5 inches and the new one is about 2 or 3 inches. And I don't know the gender of any of the fish more

Resolved Question: What's the best predator of snails for my freshwater aquarium?

I've got a large snail population in our 110 gallon, probably brought in on plants from the store. These are pond snails. What's the best fish to introduce as a predator? Freshwater tank with live plants, "South American" with angels, tetras and plecos. I've also got one yo-yo loach who's become lazy over the past couple years - I doubt he'd have the capacity to do this all on his own. Thanks.Oh come on. First three people who answered, you're killing me here. LOLTank is 110 gallons, big enough to house anything at least temporarily. I've got 3 bristlenose plecos. more

Voting Question: My fish has suddenly got really fat.?

I have a pond in my back garden, and one of my goldfish, actually it might be a cross breed but it's either a comet or a goldfish. Well one of them has got really fat, and it's scales are all sticking out. Is there something wrong, I looked at some websites and they said Dropsey or something like that, but they always refer to aquarium fish, but mine are in a pond. Is my poor fishy going to die? more

Resolved Question: What type of Canister Filter would you recommend for my 78 gallon aquarium?

Current Stockings are: 1 Albino Tiger Oscar (around 11 inches) 1 Jack Dempsey ( around 7 inches) 1 Jaguar Cichlid ( Around 4 inches, but he will be out of the tank as soon as my friend's pond is ready) Anyways i currently have a Penguin Bio Wheel 350 and i'm looking for a better filter and would like to add a canister filter since i'll be adding a Lutino Oscar that i'm raising in a separate tank. So basically the stocking will be 2 Oscars and 1 Jack Dempsey. Don't need to hear people talk about size because these fish (2 oscar and 1 female jd) can indeed live in a 78, so don't waste time talking about tank size. If you can provide a link that will be awesome if not it's fine just give me the name of the canister filter. Thanks much in advance. more
