Open Question: How to set-up a saltwater fish tank?

I have a 10 gallon freshwater tank set-up now. I want to convert that to an saltwater aquarium. I would like to have the type of tank that you could put corals and live rocks in. I have lighting hood, heater and a 10-15 gallon filter. What do I need to buy and what is the cheapest way to run a quality tank? Thanks you so much. Resolved Question: Saltwater aquarium owners!!?

Well this is my first saltwater tank and I have tried to do as much research as I can. I'm purchasing a 125 gallon aquarium that has 100lb of live rock, 100lb of live sand and a few damsels and shrimp in it already. It has metal halide lights, Fx5 filter. Anyway my question is about the fish I plan to gradually add. I want 2 false percula clowns, yellow tang, blue hippo tang, 2 firefish goby, flame angel, lawnmower blenny, green mandarin dragonet, pearly jawfish, pink tip conalactus arrow crab, scarlet hermit, emerald crab, feather duster, blue linckia star, and a purple urchin. I hope to add some coral at some point to. So do these all sound compatible, and any suggestions on what order to add them? What other actual fish can I add? Any other info you think I should know. Thanks, greatly appreciated! more

Resolved Question: Saltwater Aquarium Question?

I have an empty 44 gallon tank, and I'm just wondering what kind of equipment do I need to start a saltwater aquarium? I know I'll obviously need a filter, heater, lights, etc. But what else would I need, what do you recommend, and also what kinds of starter fish? I'm thinking a clownfish or two and maybe an annenome just for starters, nothing to extravagent. But I'm just looking for an experienced aquarist that can recommend ANYTHING that will make a saltwater tank easier to start. also, are protein skimmers completely necessary? Thanks! I'm looking forward to the answers! Zach more

Resolved Question: New 85 Gal Saltwater Aquarium Protein Skimmer and equipment.?

Hello, I am hoping to get a little help here. I just started a 85 gal saltwater aquarium. I am very new to the hobby as well as new to aquariums period! As any saltwater people no any where you go you get different answers! Well let me break it down. I have an 85 gal tank, a wet/dry filter, a 400 watt heater, a light, a hood, stand and lid. We decided against live sand and live rock (although I am still contemplating the live rock...?) I still haven't purchased a Protein skimmer. So this is part of my question. What is a good protein skimmer and pump that will not break my wallet but will be worth the money. Also is there any other equipment that I seem to be leaving out?? What are 'powerheads' and how to I get bubbles in the tank?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! We started with 10 tiny damsels to get the cycle going. It is been a full week and we lost two fish already!! HELP! more

Resolved Question: How much lighting should I have for my saltwater aquarium?

I am currently converting my 20g long planted tank into a saltwater aquarium. I am running a 2 x 31 watt t5 bulbs. One is 10,000k and the other is a Actinic. Would this be sufficient lighting to maintain sps corals since a 20 long is more shallow than a 20 tall? or would I have to upgrade my lighting fixture? more

I'm setting up a new 220L (50 gallon) saltwater aquarium with a 90L (20 gallon) sump, and don't want to pay for metal halide lighting. I have a few kilos of live rock and a few kilos of live sand as my substrate. What advice/suggestions do you have for inhabitants for my tank? Cheers more

Voting Question: I have a 128 litre Freshwater aquarium, How muuch will it cost to convert to saltwater?

Okay so I have kept freshwater fish for over 2 years and now I think Im ready for the challenge of saltwater fish. I have already a tank, lighting (Blue actinic tube and also a daylight tube) heaters (2 150W smartheaters) A large external filter (Eheim Ecco) and a pump. I think I need: protein skimmer powerheads live rock live sand My LFS sells premixed water which I will use for now. Have I missed anything? Obviously I know it's a small tank but it is all that is practical for me. Also my main question: How much will it all cost? I live in the UK so in GBP would be nice. :P also Im still at school too so I don't have loads of money... This may be a problem :( more

Resolved Question: Old ATX PSU What Kind of Metal is the Case Made From?

I salvaged an older ATX PSU and am going to use the metal case for a light for my saltwater aquarium. What kind of metal is the case made from? Originally I was thinking it was aluminum but now I'm thinking it's tin or something... Thanks for the help! The saltwater won't touch it, there might be some very light salt spray on it though. It's steel for being attracted to a magnet(duh why didn't I think of it, aluminum is not magnetic) Epoxy would be rather expensive compared to buying an aluminum case of some sort for $10. I'm hanging an aluminum heatsink over my reef aquarium, mounting high power LEDs onto the heatsink and might use the PSU box away from the tank for other stuff and find a aluminum box to piggyback on the heatsink to hold my LCD and led drivers... Thanks for the information guys! more

Voting Question: Starting our very first saltwater aquarium . . .?

My husband & I have been wanting a saltwater aquarium for a couple of years now & I think we're just about ready to do it. Currently we have 2 freshwater tanks. One is 40 gallons and the other 55 gallons. We would like the saltwater tank to be about 150 gallons. What do you think the price range would be for the complete setup with filters, lighting, etc? I was thinking all together with fish we'd be looking at around $2,500 but I could be totally off base. more

What clean up crew members do you recommend for a 29g? Thanks in advance! Please feel free to give me tips and advice. Voting Question: How do you get rid of algae in a saltwater aquarium without using a protein skimmer?

I have a uv sterilizer, 216 watt lights and a magnum 350 canister filter that works great but still have a large amount of algae. I have 1 sea slug, 5 snails, and several other algae eating livestock but the algae grows faster then they can eat. I leave the lights on for a max of 8 hours a day. The algae is a green color but I do have some coraline algae starting so i dont want to mess with the water to much. more

Resolved Question: What type of fish should I add to my saltwater aquarium?

I have a 30 gallon saltwater aquarium setup. The nitrates are close to zero, ammonia is at zero, PH fluctuates between 8.3-8.4, the salinity is at 1.024, i have adequate lighting, mechanical filtration good for 20 gallons, and biological filtration good for 50-70 gallons, the ALK is a little high... but I'm hoping it will regulate itself. I have two (2) of the Aqua Clear 30 gallon power heads... making for 60 gallons worth of wave-making and circulation... along with the agitation from the filters. The tank has been setup for about a month mow, and the live rock is growing stringy algae on it if you look closely, and the glass is now starting to get circular algae on it as well. I just put in two damsels about a week ago, and they look to be doing fine... except they like to hide under/in/behind the rocks. I also have a live sand bed in the tank that is about 1/6 of the whole tank (it's about 3" high). Would it be safe to start adding fish into the tank (besides Damsel)? Should I try coral? I know that coral is hard to keep... but I think I'm up for it... What fish would be good for starting? How/what would I fees them? Because the water circulation obliterates flakes... so what types of sinking food should I get? Thanks in advance for your help!I already own a tank with piranha in it.... for all you retards out there! more

Resolved Question: What are reef aquarium lights for?

I bought a 55 gallon tank, and had this asome huge light fixture. But the lights were not the original white light, they were like blue-ish or purple-ish. Saw this stamp on them and it said "Coral Sun". Wich I guess is the brand. Any ways, I looked up reef lights on google and pics with Salt Water aquariums with blueish light appeared. So I guess the lights I have must be for something in a saltwater aquarium. But I dont have saltwater!! I have fresh water, will this light hurt my fish?? Or cause damage to the decor or plastic plants? I was planning on getting live plants, will this light help plants grow? Or do I need the white floracent light?? What are these lights used for exactly?? more

Resolved Question: How can I grow plants in aquarium?

I just recently got this 55 gallon tank. And with it came this huge hood. It had 4 long lights on it. When the guy I bought it from showed me they worked, the lights where purple or bluish in color? What are these used for? I searched them up, and found something named reef lights, witch are blueish purple aquariam lights. Are these the ones I have? If yes, will they over heat the water? Or burn or hurt my fish?? I dont have a saltwater tank, A freshwater one is what I have. Anyways, I was also wondering, are these the lights used to grow Real marine plants?? Because I bought these marine plant bulbs once, and put them in my 20 gallon, witch had an ordinary white light, and they never grew, so I guess I needed some special light. Will this blue light help the plants grow? Or how can I grow aquarium plants, live ones, not plastice, plastic ones got boring. Thanks for any help! And what are the blue or purple lights for?? more

Resolved Question: Salt or fresh water? Planted?

I have gotten my tank from craigslist for $150. It is 60 gallons. It is my first fish tank. My original plan was to make a freshwater planted tank with mostly guppies or other live bearing fish. The previous owner was keeping chilids and other larger saltwater fish. The Japanese man, who owns the local aquarium shop, laughed at me when I asked him if I could grow plants with the setup I have right now. I want a planted aquarium but I just spent $150 on the setup and I don't feel like cashing out for a nice filter, high wattage light, substrate, plants, and C02. Should I go ahead and get the freshwater fish and upgrade later when I have the money? Or should I take advantage of the large tank and get some bigger saltwater fish? My girlfriend wants "nemo" but in that case don't I need to get live rock? I filled it, and the tank looks much better than I expected . The combination of the blue light and the blue gravel looks less tacky than I expected, but for sure it has a saltwater feel. I am not happy with the water-flow on the filter, it seems very low. The blue light is cool but the transformer heats up and makes a weird noise :-/ I would really like to avoid using these plastic plants if possible. Thanks guys. more

Resolved Question: Starting a salt water tank?

I think I'm going to attempt a saltwater tank which I've had no experience with but I have had several years of experience with freshwate as well as brackishr so I'm not completely ignorant. I've decided to either start with my spare 55 or 30 gal. I need to know what to do though? I mean do saltwater tanks require special lighting other than a common aquarium hood? if so how much does it cost? Do I need a skimmer? I will be using a penguin bio wheel filter 50-70 gal filter and I have a heater I just don't know where to go from here. Live sand? how much is that? Live rock? plants? etc. also how much salt should I be adding per gallon in a salt water tank? more

Resolved Question: What's A Good Fish For A 2 Gallon Aquarium? (NO GOLDFISH)?

Resolved Question: Need help with saltwater aquarium please?

I am new to saltwater tanks, I've only had mine since June. I currently have a 20gal and want to upgrade to a bigger tank. I preferrably want one anywhere from 46-60 gallons. I know I'll need more sand and I already have a protein skimmer. What else would you suggest I get? I don't have any corals so I'm not concerned with the T5 lighting right now. I keep reading about refugiums. Since I am new at this, should I venture into one of these? I'm not quiet sure how to maintain the refugiums. Any information you think I need to know about saltwater would be great. And as far as diet, I am feeding frozen foods only. I rotate daily between brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and marine cuisine. I have the water testing kit, two differnt ones actually. Oh and when I upgrade I plan on getting a canister filter, as I have read they are superior when it comes to filtration. Thanks for any helpful information you can give me.The Protein Skimmer is for tanks up to 100 gallons. Yes, I forgot to add in the heater. I do have live rock and will add more when I get a bigger tank. Also, from what I have read the canister filter is supposed to have superior filtration. Would a regular pump be suffice? And thanks for recommending that book.Oh and I will definitely get another power jet head for added water movement. more

Resolved Question: Reef Aquarium Questions!?

Ok!... So after a few weeks of planning I have decided I'm going to make a cool 300 gallon salt water aquarium for my newborn son to grow up to. I picked out some unique and compatible fish including a tang, some butterfly fish, lots of cardinals, hawkfish, clown fish, an eel, ect. Anyways, all the fish I selected were deemed safe for a reef, so i decided I'm going to make a reef. Before I get started in choosing specific things, I got a few questions concerning reef aquariums. First, I think I'm going to get live rock. What exactly is live rock? I think it is just rocks that contain a lot of minerals and make good foundations for reefs. Is that correct? And is live rock necessary for corals and plants? Also another concern is lighting. Does each plant and coral organism require similar amounts of lighting? And would too much light be a problem, say if one organism needed more light to thrive so I raised the lighting in the tank? There is also hard of soft coral. Can I keep hard and soft coral together in the same tank? And as far as growth, I can't seem to find any information on the growth of coral, but at some point it will stop right? My next questions concerns cleaning. Would it be fine to get some colorful shrimp and\or snails or nudibranches(which I guess is like a sea slug)? Could those live in a community with fish, or would they just get eaten? My final question regards filtration. I think I can just go buy some saltwater from my pet store. But I keep hearing about a protein skimmer. Is that a filter or separate? And I'm assuming I have to get a heavy duty filter for like a 300 some gallon tank. However, wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the cleaning organisms?(the shrimp, snails, or slugs i might put in the aquarium). Also, would the filter be different because it's a reef? And I herd that the live rock and actual reef system kind of filters the water. Is that true? OK! I know it's a lot of questions. These are the questions I couldn't find online and figure Id try to get a slight grasp on what I can before I call and ask the fish salesman who might just try to sell me a whole bunch of stuff. Anyways, please answer what you can, thanks. more

Resolved Question: What light do i need for my 28 gallon saltwater aquarium?

Hi, I'm 15 years old and i am working on my second saltwater aquarium. I have a 28 gallon bowed front fish tank. Right now i have two clowns and some different types of Anthilia. I also have a mushroom and two different types of soft coral that don't need the best light. So now i am wanting to get a little more complex and go for some more advanced corals and anemones. What type of lighting do you suggest for me? Thank you, AveryThank you verry much! i am looking at one on e-bay and it is 96 watts. What wattage would you suggest? Thanks, Avery more

Resolved Question: I found my betta on the floor?

I went out to get some shopping done, and i was gone for a good few hours. When i came home, i checked on my fish, but one of my betta's was missing from his tank! I searched the floor, and found him. God only knows how long he was stuck down there, he wasn't moving and was dried up. I thought he was dead and my boyfriend picked him up with some toilet paper. But my boyfriend freaked out and dropped him and said he moved. Poor little guy :[ getting dropped back onto the floor. I picked him up and placed him in his tank gently. For a while he just sat in the bottom of the tank but now he is swimming around ok. I left him alone with his lights off for a couple of hours, added 1 teaspoon of some weak saltwater, two drops of water conditioner to help fight off any fungus[I read to watch for that] and to help him reproduce his slime coat. He's in 2 gallons. [working on upgrading to 5 but i only just got him all set up in his 2 gallon] He's eating all right, and responding to my movements etc. I got a good look at him, and it looks like he has a big black spot on his side? Not like a fuzzy patch, but like a bruise. What could this be? Needless to say i have a lid sitting on his aquarium now, it isn't air tight because he needs access to air, but it is covering his tank and its too heavy to be pushed around in the event he does jump again. Are there any long term effects i should be worrying about? What are some treatments/medicine anything that i can do/buy to help him recover, and reduce stress? He seems to be healthy but i don't want him to up and die a week later. Has anyone had experience with this? more

Resolved Question: Saltwater aquarium help?

Hello over the summer I had a nice saltwater set up in a 16 gallon bow front. 16lbs live rock, good light, heater, average filter. I had a well established tank with 2 clowns, 2 blue green damsels, a shrimp, went to college left my parents in charge and chaos arubted. Everything gone. all that left is the water and the live rock. I want to start up again this summer and this time bring it to my apartment. However I don't know what to do now should i get rid of all water clean the tank and start over, or should I clean the rocks and glass because there is some algea build up. Or should I get some grabs or something to clean up while my tank has no fish. Also would you recommend any other equipment for this small set up. Thank you Mike more

Resolved Question: Should i get a T5 lighting or a metal halide for my saltwater reef tank?

I have a 75 gallon bow front saltwater aquarium. I'm planning to start a reef tank. Should I get a T5 or a metal halide? I heard that T5 is fine for the height of my tank plus a metal halide tank is pretty expensive. Any suggestions? If I get T5 lighting will I be able to keep many varieties of corals/clams or only a few since it is not as strong as metal Halide? more
