Resolved Question: Caring for Betta after a fight?

For background, I have a divided 5gal tank with a Betta on each side; Murderfish and Fishby. Well, my worst nightmare just happened. I woke up this morning and surprise, the divider in my 5gal Betta tank was fallen down and Fishby's back fin was torn to shreds. While I go to the pet supply to get aquarium glue to cement that sucker up for good, I was wondering how to properly treat Fishby. I have moved him to a "medication" tank of his own and given him some Stress Coat. Any other medicine or home remedies I might try? He doesn't appear to have any flesh wounds, just his ripped fin. Should I keep the water warmer than usual, or the same? I have a 180gal saltwater, would a bit of the salt I use for it be ok for him? Murderfish looks just fine, by the way (his name didn't come from this incident). I can't be mad at him; it's just his instincts. Trust me, he's my first Betta and still my favorite.I asked the salt question because I have been keeping all kinds of fish, fresh and salt (Jack Dempseys being my favorite) and I am new to betta keeping. Thank you!Thank you all for the advice, you would think I'd know how to deal with wounds after years of cichlid tanks! more

Resolved Question: 30 Gallon Saltwater Aquarium?

Hi! I was wondering what are the supplies and things I would need to start one? I would like it to be just a Live Rock tank, and not a coral. I currently have my 30 gallon tank as a freshwater. So what would the supplies I need be? Like powerhead etc. Thanks! :) more

Voting Question: Saltwater aquarium setup?

I was just looking into saltwater aquariums, and I have a list of supplies and their prices from various pet stores. If you have any other additions to the list or other ideas speak up! But, I need to know if they are necessary, wrong choice, better ideas... etc; 1. Aquarium, I'm looking to get around 55-75g or a cheap 125g (Ebay, craigslist.). I have found only at petsmart: $150-$200 2. Skimmer, this where im not totally sure, see #4, I have heard about a really good one with no problems, Aquac Remora protein skimmer, wear as how it does it, co-current counter, I haven't a clue: $150-$200 3. Live rock, sand, I am going to just leave out and extra $200 for that. Maybe use what's leftover for corals and inverts. 4. Filter, this is why I am clueless, do I actually need one or does the protein skimmer and the live rock cover everything? How about chemical filtration? Does the skimmer cover that? $? 5. Misc. Supplies, water tests, treatments, nets, buckets, vacuum, food. Corals&Inverts. $50+ 6. Fish inverts, corals, plants etc. Don't know price yet. 7. Thermometer, Heater, $? 8. Salt mix $? 9. And what's a Reverse Osmosis or RO/Deionization filter for number 4? $? Could you please fill in some Question marks, thanks. and I live in the Kansas city area so anything around there, thanks for your help! more

Resolved Question: What is the cost involved in getting a saltwater fish aquarium?

I'm a complete newbie and I'm jumping into getting a saltwater aquarium. Voting Question: What are some really cool saltwater aquarium plants that don't up the maintenance to high?

Hi Everyone, just turned my old fresh water 20G tank into a salt water tank. I am currently using all fresh water supplies, and a 2 inch coral sand bottom. I used Sea Salt, and mixed every 1 cup to 2 gallons of distilled water and have my salinity just about perfect now, for about 48 hours now. I have put in a little less than 3 lbs of Live Rock, which seems like it was cured since i bought at the pet store and they took it out of a tank filled w/ salt water. I put my 3 little pieces in the tank, and based on another yahoo answers question i posted earlier today - I'm going to put about 20-25 more lbs of live rock in there. So now that you know the story, what can I get in terms of plants that won't require a significant advance in equipment but will look great. Lots of colors.. I'm shooting for 2 clownfish, and 3 more community plus some feather duster/and other things. I plan on adding my fish one at a time, and letting them settle. So far this yahoo answers thing is pretty sweet, you are all so intelligent in your crafts :)Is there any plants that only require your basic fresh water lighting, that came with the aquarium? I'm not interested in paying for a whole new lighting system, not right now - I want to test the waters and see if I can successfully keep a sm 20g, and then eventually in the future if I can.. move on to a really big one for the inside wall of my house, somewhere around 55g-100gI still haven't gotten a strong enough answer in regards to what plants look cool, and are easy to take care of. more

Resolved Question: Saltwater recycling system for vehicle fuel?

Could it be possible to create a system similar to hydro-power plants, using magnets to force water through a tube system, powering the engine of a vehicle? It would be the ultimate in clean fuel, not to mention an unending supply of fuel... I know that they have magnetic systems for pumps in aquariums... I am not an engineer, but I have an outline in my head for it....The magnetic system would be used to force the water through the tube system, activating a "water wheel" of sorts, which in turn would power a generator, which in turn would create the true "fuel" (electric power) for the vehicle. It would be self powering, but could also energy start by battery charge, which would be acheived by electric car power stations or the internal generator of the vehicle... more

Resolved Question: Setting up Saltwater Aquarium, need guidance/help?

I'm very interested in setting up a saltwater aquarium, but everyone I have spoken to thus far (mostly pet shop associates) have discouraged me by saying it costs too much and takes way too much time. I'm more concerned by the time. I understand that it takes about 4-6 weeks after initial set up before you can even put in any fish, but what I am more worried is what kind of maintenance is required after setup. Do we need to change water daily? Also, I live in an apartment, does the aquarium have to be close to a water source? Is any special plumbing required? I'm looking for a lot of guidance. I hate to bring in fish and watch to them die. I understand you need to devote a lot of time to the aquarium, but what do you do in that time? Also, I would appreciate it if someone gave me a list of supplies that are a must and recommended for saltwater aquariums. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Why is my new saltwater aquarium so foggy?

I just started up a saltwater aquarium and so far have been following instructions on the book, but there's no help in what to do if your water foggs up. I put in some rocks (well rinsed) to decorate (not live rocks, but they were purchased at the petshop for an aquarium) , and mixed the salt with water per indications, and added the live sand as the book instructed, and all my other supplies are already up, like the filter, heater, ect. I have no fish yet or any other living creatures, as I'm to wait for the water to cycle first. On the first day of having set up my aquarium, the water was pretty cloudy, which I understand that's normal when you first set up a tank (I have had freshwater fish before and that seems normal until everything settles). The 2nd day it was less cloudy, and by the 3rd day it was pretty clear... however, by the 4th day, it got pretty cloudy again, and now it's even cloudier. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. All the freshwater aquariums I've had in the past stay foggy for only the first few days after setup, but gradually clearing up. Once they clear up, they don't get foggy again like my saltwater is doing. more

Resolved Question: Can I keep normal sedimate (normally used for Freshwater) for a saltwater aquarium?

I just bought an eclipse 3 (37 gal.) tank for saltwater aquarium use. I know, from what I have read that this is fairly small for this type of aquarium. Can I use it for salt water even with the supplied filtering systym in the hood? I have also bought regular (black, not "live" sediment) after the fact of reading that I should have bought live sedimate an live rock. Will what I have work? What is my next step? Shall I keep my black non-live sediment get some live rock to put on top of it? Will the live rock's "creatures" take effect on the non-live sediment so that they become live as well? Can I even have a live rock in there before it has cycled, or with that spead it up? Should I add ammonia, if I have, or don't have, a live rock to speed up the cycling process? How do you do the monthly maitenance of replacing 25% of the water without puting the fish and ecosystem in too much shock? Please help and try to answer as much as you can. Very new, but very interested in it more

Resolved Question: Fresh or Salt water aquarium?

I am getting 55 gallon aquarium. I just bought a 10 gallon that I have as a freshwater. I've had it a week and I really screwed up...but the fish are doing fine, so I am feeling a little more confident. I just basically want to know which kind of aquarium is easier to care for, and if I was to go with a saltwater aquarium, how much do nice looking fish and supplied cost monthly? Also, how much work goes into a salt water aquarium compared to freshwater? more
