Open Question: White hanging eggs (??) along two walls of my fish tank. Hundreds of them! What could they be?

I looked at my fishies today and noticed hundreds of little white "baggies" hanging from the sides of my tank at all water levels just "blowing in the breeze"; what in the world are they?! They are shaped just like this pirate hook ( http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.piratemerch.com/images/pirate_hook_58275.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.piratemerch.com/pirate-costumes-pirate-costume-accessories-c-58_50.html&usg=__Ea8u2GAGxuwNUIm3wcncuB7GvD8=&h=500&w=500&sz=16&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=yTgDgQo7oEJhwM:&tbnh=138&tbnw=142&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpirtate%2Bhook%2Bcostume%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us%26rlz%3D1I7ADFA_en%26biw%3D1003%26bih%3D577%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=522&ei=ONKHTMfDGoHCnAetm6iCDg&oei=ONKHTMfDGoHCnAetm6iCDg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=13&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0&tx=65&ty=93 ) in which the curved part of the actual hook is chopped off. Sticking with the picture, imagine: the nub part is frayed at the bottom and loose in the water; the stick/hook portion is stuck onto the sides of my tank. Each is about the size of the end of a pencil lead, and there are hundreds of them: OMG! The tank was just moved from home to my dorm on Aug 30th, so it is possible that something different is in the water here. I did travel with about 8gal of water or so from home, all the bacteria and wheel were preserved in water through trip, fish were transfered to hot-water-cleaned rubbermade container for transport and reintroduced to tank after it was back up and water running for about 5ish hours by being floated in baggies for about 20min. I did have an ick-scare (treated 29days with Coppersafe and sponge filter by marineland). Ick scare means I treat preventatively now for three days with Jungle's Ick Guard II 1xmonth (without carbon filter of course) bc I believe the parasites are in my water. No signs of fish distress, etc; everyone is perfectly normal. One fished died in hospital tank due to long-lasting, unknown, internal infection/parasite/bacteria(??)... there was nothing more I could do. ***My fishtank, freshwater, tropical community:*** -15gal tall Eclipse System 150gal/hr filtration -Access to sunlight, but not in direct sun at all (light is just bouncing off white walls lol). Hood's lamp is used to light and heat tank during the day. -Heated to a constant +/- 78-80*F by seperate heater always (lamp does so on its own). -7 Zebra Danios (5F 2M I believe) -2 Mystery Snails (1 F 1unknown) -2 Dwarf Gouramis (both F) -I think that we might have neamatoads (or whatever those little white worms are that come out at night) bc my mom's tank (same set up and water supply) have them. -Fish are fed any variety of Tetra's Bettamin, Tetra Min Tropical Chrips/Granuals/FD Shrimp and Tetra FD Bloodworms & Tetra Algea Waffers. -No live plants, etc. but tons and tons of fake plants and decorations including a new plant that cover 1/3 the tank's surface. -Tank floor is a mixture of sand, "pond rock"/larger stones, and gravel all from LFS and very very old sea shells that have been in our tanks for years. -API Aquarium Salt is replaced 1xmonth in a small pet-co cup Any comments or advice will be appreciated. ...I'm trying not to worry. Thank you :) SarahbethTo make it clear: there are no parasites/etc on the fish... just whatever this is stuck to the walls of the tank. Also, I don't know the water's quality but it was just changed this past weekend.Thank you for your reply, Tracy. Could you please clarify this: "More significantly, trying to kill a bunch of animals in your aquarium means you're going to end up with lots of decay, and that means poor water quality. Imagine if you killed off a nest of rats with rat poison, but just left the bodies to rot. Bad. The correct approach here is to ignore the worms, and instead control their numbers so the population dies back over time." Are you saying these things are worms? worm eggs? are you also saying don't kill them --or that I killed something, like the ick??-- and that instead just remove them with the PT method? also, so they're harmless and sorta beneficial... should I just leave them? I don't mind as long as the fish are gonna be okay. Sorry for the confusion! Thanks!!Sorry: nevermind Tracy. I understand what you are saying now. Thank you! Your comment makes sense :) more

I got a gold mystery snail today and put it in my aquarium. Resolved Question: Are you an aquarium expert?

Two weeks ago I purchased an aquarium kit from Pet Smart. It came with a filter and water conditioner. I purchased a gold fish, a ghost catfish, (2) glass tetra, a black and white balloon belly molly and a sunburst wag platy. I also bought 4 snails. The following day, i returned to Pet Smart to have my water check to make sure everything was okay. They told me the water was fine. Within the next couple days, the ghost catfish and two glass tetra were dead. The water temp was fine too by the way. A week later I returned to Pet Smart and purchased another Ghost Catfish and two bleeding heart tetras. The next day, the bleeding hearts were dead. I decided to do my own research and found out that my ghost catfish would soon die of loneliness. Why hadnt the Pet Smart people told me this? So today I went back to Pet Smart, returned the dead Bleeding hearts and the ghost catfish so it woudnt be depressed by being alone. I exchanged the 3 fish for a tiger platy, red wag platy and a swordfish danio. Its been about 5 hours and I found my Balloon belly molly on the aquarium floor, upside down, dead. What am I suppose to do? HELP PLEASE more

Resolved Question: I added too much aquarium salt..?!?

I've recently found 2 dead fish (a platy and female betta) so I did a water change and then replaced it. I noticed that my new female betta shredded my male betta's fins! So i put him in a betta condo, added stress coat. And was going to add like 5 table spoons of salt in, and me being clumsy dropped the bag of salt in the water! Only half the bag went out, and it fine. But I think i added WAY too much?!? Voting Question: Stocking for just under 8 Gal (28L) Aquarium?

I was thinking of buying the Aqua One Aqua Start 320 Aquarium, but was wondering what would be suitable inhabitants (Tropical fish- I would have a heater). I thought a Male Betta, but them wondered what tankmates it could have (Preferably not neons, as I already have a betta with neons)?? I also thought about a couple of small, colourful fish. I thought 4 Male guppies, but didnt know what else to put in with them if I went for this opiton.....?? Please could you give me some stocking ideas for this aquarium. I need a couple with a Betta in the mix, and a few with some smaller fish (guppies, tetras etc). They need to be colourful fish, and preferably no snails or shrimp. They also need to not outgrow the tank! Below is a link to the tank: http://www.onlineaquariumstore.com/acatalog/Aqua_One_Aqua_Start_320_Aquarium_Pink.html Thanks in Advance (I hope!) =]I notice you are suggesting guppies a lot. Is this as this is the only fish I mentioned besides the betta or is it that they need less swimming room? How about 3 male guppies and a couple of tetras, say 5. Not sure what tetras, but they all grow to only a couple of cm. How about platies/ mollies? Would a few of those work?Oh, and if I go for just male guppies, how many could I have? more

Resolved Question: Anyone know anything about Assasin snails?

Hi all We have 2 apple snails that are reproducing fast. We have heard that Assasin snails will eat the babies, this we have found is the only solution to over population in the tank. I have looked up the info and wondered whether the Assasin will try to attack the apple snails too? A website said that the Assasin will eat snails smaller than itself. One of the apple snails is still small. Any info will help. Thanks B.T.W: In the aquarium are neons, zebra tetras and cory doras. Also live plants. more

Voting Question: Snails and dwarf frogs!?

Hi, i just purchased two snails for my dwarf frogs tank, but i dont want them spiraling out of control! I heard they multiply really fast, but the worker at petsmart said that these snails wont. I dont trust him, i never trust petsmart, what worries me is that they gave them to us for free. Im really worried because were going on vacation day after tomorrow so its extremely important that they dont multiply while were gone ( 3 days )! So i need more of a preventative. Do u know how to keep snails in control without getting rid of them, they are already cleaning up the tank so i dont really want to get rid of them. I've seen many other people keep snails in their aquariums and theyve had no probs. I really need to know how to keep them in check without getting rid of them. If i have to get rid of them i will but thats last prioroty. They are 2 tiny black snails that the petsmart person gave me for free bucause they didnt want them. They are two tiny black snails with cone shaped shells, they are less than an inch. The reason i bought them was so they could clean the tank. And will dwarf frogs bother them, mine didnt bother them at all when it was right in front of them. The tank is small ( about 1.5 gallons and it contains 2 dwarf frogs ) so buying a fish that eats snails is not an option. Any answers are appreciated. Thank you all, and if anybody has frog o spheres then get your dwarf frogs to a new tank. Thanks. No hard feelings, but its a fact that snails can reproduce asexually. Just letting you know. But thanks for your answer, i'll look for the nitrite snailSo they dont need two to reproduceAnd i have a question about the mystery snail, i heard they grow big enough to suck on dwarf frogs, is this true?Well i wanted a snail, that would clean the tanks small amounts of dead plant matter while i was on vaca for 3 days and the guy gave them to me for free, so i knew somethin was up, and he told me they had too many, so i realized this snail might multiply fast, even though the petstore guy said they wont, im pretty sure that this is a lie. more

Resolved Question: Will a snail's body regrow or repair itself?

We have a freshwater snail in our aquarium and a few days ago I found it attached to the filter intake. I took the little guy off and I noticed that right under its eyes its body is ripped quite a bit :( It's not moving at all, but it's still attached to its shell. Will it repair its body? Or is the poor thing done for? Here's the thing: I didn't rip him off, I took him off. I turned off the filter, he fell a bit so I picked him off; there was no resistance. more

Resolved Question: Will this setup work?

Firstly, I had a 30 gallon tank with live aquatic plants along with 2 female guppies and 1 male (fancy). My parents aren't too into the idea of buying a heater although if the fish are in dire need of it, then I can convince them into buying one. So instead, I keep our house a little over room temperature and keep the aquarium light on the entire day. Will this be a supplement for a heater? Also, I am feeding my guppies goldfish food because I never got rid of all my goldfish food from my previous experience, but I include boiled cucumbers/lettuce is their diet. As of now my fish aren't showing any symptoms of illness or anything else of that nature. The reason I said had was because a couple of days ago, my friend asked me to take care of his goldfish (he won it at a festival) because his parents are in a financial situation and they had to move. It is about 5 inches and approximately 3 years old (it has the white pimples on its gills so that's how I am guessing its age). On the first day that he was included, the guppies huddled up in one corner and seldom moved. I am extremely confident in my guppies' survival because the goldfish's mouth is not large enough to consume their bodies. On the second day my guppies once again started to roam around the tank, although they do tend to accelerate when they get near the goldfish. Is this normal? I am also aware that goldfish prefer cold water, but can they live in warm water? My parents are taking me to PetCo this Saturday after my basketball game and I was thinking of adding 2-3 Terite Snails as well as a few more plants. None of my female guppies are pregnant as of now, but when one of them does have fry I will not try to ensure all of their survivals so I am just going to let nature take its place (survival of the fittest). Thank you for taking your time to read and I appologize for spreading my questions all over the place. more

Resolved Question: I have a 3 gallon tank with 1 male betta and 2 snails..what else can I put in there?

Resolved Question: How to quarantine live plants for aquarium?

I have a new amazon sword plant (I am new to keeping live plants) that is sitting in a vase full of conditioned water. It is warm water, maybe around 82-83 degrees? Anyway, I am not sure how to get rid of possible snail eggs and other things like parasites before adding it to my aquarium. I do NOT want to take any chance of my fish getting sick from it. I bought it to reduce stress and as a hiding place. :) I've already rinse it off well and rubbed the leaves off, also getting rid of any browning leaves. I don't like the idea of using bleach and I am afraid of salt since it could kill the plant. What should I do? more

Resolved Question: Can you tell me what's wrong with my Betta?

Ok here were my observations. 1:25pm I first noticed Beta had a BB sized hole in his dorsal fin, with a dark discoloration surrounding the hole. 1:26 to 1:40 (Estimated time) I basically just wasted several minutes watching him, and worrying. 1:43pm I decided the first thing to do was just go ahead and clean his bowl, and change his water a day early. 1:44pm Complete water change treatment implemented. The water treatments I added at the time of water change. ½ teaspoon Splendid Betta Complete Water Conditioner 5ml API Stress Coat+ 1/8 teaspoon API Melafix ½ teaspoon API Aquarium Salt 2:14pm No improvement shown. Lower rear quarter of Dorsal Fin seems to be greying, and showing signs of atrophy. 2:27pm I called the closest thing to a fish vet my small Iowa town has, and Jason asked me to bring him in. After looking at Beta for a few moments he told me he was just getting older, and his fin was changing colors as a natural result of aging. Needless to say, I disagreed. 2:43pm I decided to call the Drs. Foster and Smith Fish Experts, who advised me to photograph the effected area, and email the pictures to them. I was also advised to purchase of a Freshwater Master Test kit. 3:15pm So I went to the store and got an API Freshwater Aquarium Master Test Kit, 1 bottle of API Pimafix, and 1 bottle of API Stress Zyme. 3:29pm After CAREFULLY reading instructions, I preformed all 4 tests. Beta Jr's Test Results 8/20/10 Water Temperature 75 degrees PH 8.4 Ammonia 0.0 Nitrates 0.0 Nitrites 0.0 3:43pm I phoned the test results to the Drs. Foster and Smith Specialist who noted that the water temperature was on the low end of a Bettas comfort zone, and the pH of the water was elevated. With a desirable range being 6.0 to 8.0. Specialist advised adding the proper dose of API pH UP, and continue monitoring the fish. 3:44pm Water treatments added. 2 drops API Stress Zyme 2 drops API pH DOWN 1/8 teaspoon API Pimafix 4:13pm We were finally able to get a couple decent pictures of Beta's bad fin on my Wife's digital camera. 4:16pm My Wife went to her Mothers house to download the pictures, and Email them to the Drs. Foster and Smith Specialists. 4:50pm Out of sheer boredom, I decided to test the pH of the Tap Water here at the trailer. Tap Water Tested almost of the scale! pH tested somewhere between 8.4 - 8.8! (I wonder why it's so high?) 6:02pm Fed all four Bettas a nice portion of Tetra Freeze Dried Bloodworms. I was glad to watch Beta gulp up his meal with his usually gluttonous intensity. I didn't feed him this morning, with all the running around I was doing, so I'm guessing he was pretty hungry. I don't think he left enough leftovers for Goliath my big Mystery Snail. So I'll probably feed him tonight when he's roaming the bowl on his clean up patrol. 6:48pm The discolored section of Beta's Dorsal fin seems to be tearing away from the healthy portion of the fin. Thankfully, Beta's behavior doesn't seem affected by his bad fin. In fact by the way he's flaring at Prince Aka (My male Crowntail Betta), and otherwise just going about his normal routine. I'm not even sure he knows anything is wrong. It makes me very happy to see him flaring, swimming around, and acting like nothing is wrong!:) It's a good sign I think! 8:05pm The discolored patch of Dorsal Fin is almost white now, and has torn nearly all the way to the healthy tissue. I'm hoping the damaged tissue will just take care of itself during the night, and fall away. Leaving the healthy tissue intact. 8:10pm Wow Beta and Prince Aka really want to have out! That's not really a smart move on Prince Aka's part in my opinion. I think I'd be backing down if I was him, especially since I'd say Beta's got him out weighed by about three or four times least! I mean with that size difference, even if Beta wasn't feeling 100% it'd still be a pretty short fight I'll bet. I do think you have to give some respect to Prince Aka though, for being brave enough to WANT to fight a fish that's that much bigger than him! Sorry for the thesis, lol. Anyway, here's a link to a pic of Beta's damaged fin. Can you tell me what it might be? http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2004135&id=1017285874&saved#!/photo.php?pid=31404930&id=1017285874&ref=fbx_album Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Why aren't my Ocellaris Clown Fish Aren't Getting Any Bigger?

Three years ago I bought two tank raised baby clown fish that were a little over 1/2 inch long each. One of them died and I eventually bought another which was a little under an inch long. They paired off and seem perfectly happy and healthy but they are not getting any bigger. What could be causing this? Some information: For around two years they have been housed in a 75 gallon fish only aquarium with around 70 lbs. of live rock, two filters and a protein skimmer. The water parameters are good and they are fed once a day...sometimes a mixture of flake food or pellets and sometimes live or frozen food. They have healthy appetites. Their tank mates are a Royal Tang, a Neon Goby and a Striped Damsel as well as a cleanup crew consisting of starfish, snails and crabs. Everyone seems to get along fine and there doesn't appear to be any problems except for the fact that the clown fish haven't grown perceptibly since I acquired them. I can't seem to find any information about this online. more

Resolved Question: Question about maintaining hospital tank with sick fish? And treating main tank? Please help ASAP!?

My betta has a fungal infection so am going to buy a small tank with a small filter. I already have Methylene Blue which my friend who is a betta breeder recommended. I have a question about maintaining the tank? How often do I do a small water change? When I add more water do I add more medication? Or just use clean, fresh water? His infection is not sever... yet. How do I treat the actual aquarium that he is living in? The medication stains like crazy; would stain my silk plants I believe, decor, silicon. And I have a Mystery Snail in there too. What do I do? more

Voting Question: HELP my sick Balloon Molly!?

I have had these 3 balloon mollies for about 6 months now. Last week, the large, dominant male who was normally very active suddenly started sitting at the top of the aquarium, not floating but just shimmying and treading water. The behavior seemed odd, but nothing else seemed amiss until after about 48 hours had passed, and he was dead at the bottom of the tank. This was a week ago. The smaller male has now begun swimming around the tank openly as he was previously restricted by the larger male to the back of the tank. All seemed well until tonight: I noticed something translucent hanging from what appeared to be his gonopodium or his anus. While I have seen a little of this before, this looked unusual-- it was about and inch and a half in length and appeared to be a hollow tube that tapered at the end, almost like an empty sausage casing. Having lost fish to nematode parasites, I became very concerned and picked him up with a net in order to investigate further. I couldn't see anything, so I placed him pack in the water and whatever was there appeared to be gone. However, I then noticed that his body looked almost bent to the side-- when I observed him from above, his body looks like its making a slight C-shape. He seems to have some difficulty swimming because of this. I know that balloon mollies are notorious for having spine problems, but this *just* happened today-- I imagine that if he were to develop a spinal curve it would start out slight and steadily cause problems, not just bend over night. Please help me with this. I am panicked after what happened to my other little molly last week-- although the two fishes' symptoms seem to bear no similarities, it is just too strange that two otherwise healthy fish in an otherwise healthy tank (with a swordtail, a few platies, a cory-cat, and many tiny snails that came in on the plants we purchased 6 months ago) would fall ill in such a short time. Again, here are the symptoms: Body curves to one side, translucent white "tube" hanging from anus area, slightly clamped fins and difficulty swimming. Since he is a balloon, I cannot tell if he is bloated, but he has always been relatively small and that has not changed. He seems to be eating and is still actively swimming about. Also, I do full water checks (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, etc) checks at least every other day and do a partial water change once a week (or more or less often, according to water test results), so please do not ask me to check the water or do a water change. IF it were that simple I wouldn't be asking on here :) Thanks you for reading, there will many points given to anyone who can help me!! I <3 my fishiesss more

Resolved Question: Good fish to put into a small aquarium?

I am back in school after a year of interning, and I bought a little 2.5 gallon tank today with the intent of getting a fish or two. The tank has a nice, simple filtration system, a good light and I fully intend on putting a couple of plants in there as well. Right now it's cycling to clean the environment with the help of a water cleaning supplement and the filtration system. I'll pick up a couple small plants and a pH kit tomorrow to see how it's coming along. I've also got gravel and a small faux wood branch in it to give it a nice look. So by this weekend, hopefully the tank will be ready for fish. Anyone have suggestions? a lone betta would of course do well in that kind of environment, but I'm also considering maybe a few brightly colored tetras or some such. I also want to put some kind of cleaner animal in the tank, either one of those small catfish, or possibly starting a snail colony. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! more

Resolved Question: What do you feed an AQUARIUM SNAIL...?

I want to get a snail for my aquarium. What do they eat? I went to one pet store, and the girl working the fish tanks said that they eat pieces of zucchini cut up and put into the tank, and I went to the other pet store in my town, and the guy there said that putting cut up vegetables in the water will harm your fish, and that you're supposed to give them algae tablets (which I already know foul up the water anyway.) Some people say that they don't feed it anything, because it eats the stuff off the bottom of the tank, like a suckerfish. If you have a snail, what do YOU feed it? By the way, the snails they sell look like this: http://bit.ly/bnK0kO more

Resolved Question: is this tank alright (see details please)?

I am using a Top FIn 20 filter. There will be 5 red wag platy, 3 Peppered Cories, and two mystery snails- 1 black 1 gold. Resolved Question: 30 gallon Cichlid tank?

Hi! I was wondering what Cichlids could get along with each other in a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium. I want them to be able to swim around the tank and play and not freeze in one spot for ever, being bored with no room :( I also want a rope fish? Or something like that type of fish. I want some snails and invertabres too, so none that will eat them please! Thanks so much! Oh and can the cichlids not have the big bump on their head and be very pretty and have characteristics? I hope that isn't to much to ask for? well thanks! more

Resolved Question: Filmy build up all over aquarium filter?

So I have a 10 gallon aquarium with two filters on it, one is a topfin filter that came with the aquarium when I bought it; the other is a Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheel filter (for 20 gallon tanks) that I bought because I had no idea what I was doing when I started out keeping fish and had a huge issue with ammonia. It has been a few months since I've set up my tank, I have gone through the massive ammonia spike (my ammonia was at like 8 ppm or higher, it is at 0 now). I have 3 fish in my tank (balloon molly, red wag, cory catfish) and a mystery snail. Well, my filters are really disgustingly gross.. there is a slimy film all over the base of both filters that will come off in paper looking chunks if you pick at it, and the bio-wheel on the penguin filter has stopped spinning now. Do I need new filter cartridges or what should I do? Someone told me not to change the filter for the first year (wtf?) but online some people recommended changing it every couple months, and others recommended changing it once a week. These are the original filter cartridges on the tank, the topfin filter has been on there since March but was completely rinsed out in May, the Bio-wheel filter has been there since end of April. Please tell me what to do.. I keep getting mixed information and I'm not sure what I need to do to fix this issue. more
