Welcome to Tropical Aquarium Answers

Open Question: !My fish tank's water turned brownish-YELLOW overnight!?

I have a 10 gallon tank with 2-3 inches of gravel and 2 PLASTIC ornaments inside. I have 1 goldfish, and 3 tropical guppies in there. I've had this tank for about 2 and half weeks now. When I got it I had 4 goldfish in there and soon learned that my tank was really too small for them, so I gave my dad 2 of the fish(one died the night after i got the tank) after about a week of having the tank. I recently(a week ago) got an aquarium heater(designed for a 10 gallon tank) and purchased 3 guppies. Other than the occasional clean-up and ammonia treatments, everything has been fine!...Until today of course, I walk into my living room and the tank is COMPLETELY yellow-brown(predominately yellow). I fed the fish a little bit last night and added some chlorine treatment before i slept. I didn't get a chance to look at the tank before i went to work(5am) and came back at 1:30pm to find it this color. The 3 guppies seem to be doing fine, not showing signs of too much stress, but the goldfish is breathing somewhat rapidly and swimming/darting around the tank somewhat often; I've heard these are signs of high ammonia levels. I did an ammonia test and it came up a 3(stressful). I'm weary to treat for ammonia again since I CLEANED AND TREATED the tank yesterday afternoon. ANY help on this dilemma will be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!I have a mechanical filter that came with the tank. Been working fine since I got it. more

Open Question: what kind of aquarium can i get with £200's?

as above, i am looking at running a tropical setup, as i already have a small tropical tank and want to transfer some plants into the larger tank. I would like to get a stand with the tank included in the price. more

Resolved Question: Can I add more fish to this tank?

I have a 54 litre (12 UK gallons), pH 7, 24 degrees Celcius tropical aquarium which currently holds 5 Cardinal Tetra, 4 Penguin Tetra, a Fighting Fish and a Bristlenose Pleco. Would it be possible to add any more fish, in particular Tetras? I'm open to other suggestions too, though. Thanks for the advice. So far the Penguin Tetras haven't harassed the Betta at all, in fact they always swim about nearer the surface because that's where my filter is sending the current, whilst the Betta swims leisurely about in the middle and bottom sectiosn of the tank, so they never come to blows, even when the Betta occasionally makes a trip to the surface. It's a shame about the fish ratio being what it is, I was planning on adding two Dwarf Gourami whenever the Betta passed on, but hopefully that won't happen for another year or so :) more

Voting Question: Can anyone recommend a fish species for my aquarium?

Specs: 30 gallons, freshwater tropical, no live plants, but lots of fake ones, as well as fake driftwood. A few open areas for swimming. Other inhabitants: 8 Zebra Danios, 8 Lemon Tetras, 4 Otocinclus, debating on whether or not I should get a Red tail shark. I'm looking for something about dwarf-gourami sized, not angelfish, that will get along with my other fish. Not gouramis though; all the ones in pet stores around here are very prone to dropsy. Something that I don't need to have 6 of, because I'm starting to run out of space in the tank. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Newbie and I'm confused about cycling?

3 days ago I bought a 180 liter (almost 48 gallons) aquarium. I want it to be a tropical freshwater tank. It came as a set and included was an external canister filter and a heater. I set the heater to 26 celsius (almost 79 fahrenheit). I have a bottom layer of aquarium plant fertilizer with gravel on top and five living plants. Water conditioner and Easy Start bacterial combi system was added to the water. Does this sound good so far? Now I am really confused about the cycling part. I read so many conflicting things on the internet. One place says that you should add a few hardy fish in the beginning to get the cycling started, other places say do not ever add fish until the cycling is complete. I have a test kit, but the employee at the store said it was useless to test the water within the first few days. I also know that I should add any new fish gradually or it will disturb the cycling. But when do I add the first few fish? I would like to have Cherry Barbs as the first fish. I read these are hardy enough to withstand the cycling part, is this true? I don't want to torture or kill any of them. When should I add them? How many should I add? As an estimate, when should my tank be done cycling? Thanks for any advice that you can offer this newbie! :) more

Resolved Question: Good beginner plants for freshwater tropical aquariums?

I have an 8 gallon biocube that has pebbles (natural looking ones) about the size of a wooden pencil eraser, maybe a little bigger. But I want something that is easy to care for (beginner level), something that you don't have to have substrate because I already have pebbles in the aquarium, that just grows in the water, that doesn't need anything else. Please, are there any recommendations and tell me how to care for them and plant them in my aquarium. more

Resolved Question: Tropical fish (freshwater) question?

I know most tropical freshwater fish prefer water from I believe 72 to 82 degrees farenheit. But is there a certain temp they do better at? What should my aquarium be at for the majority of these fish? more

Resolved Question: What is a nice fresh water set up for a 55 gallon tank?

I'm going to get a fifty five gallon tank pretty soon, and in the waiting of picking it up, and getting it cycled, I'd like to chose what kind of fish I want in said tank! It'll be freshwater, since I know nothing of salt water fish, or anything on proper care of salt water fish, or aquariums.. Anyway. I'm thinking I want multiple fish. I'm going to have black rocks, and a lot of plants in this tank, (I've already got that stuff so no question about it) I want colourful fish, though. Maybe, a "centerpiece" fish, and a few different kinds of fish to accent the tank. I like peaceful fish, also. Or ones that look it, any way. I'm not too picky on whether they're tropical.. or even goldfish. (Not that you could fit a lot into a 55) Cichlids, anything really. So, yeah. (: Thanks. more

Resolved Question: How many fish can I have in my tank?

Hi, I have had fish before, but it was always one beta in a little plastic aquarium. I recently purchased a size 10 (assuming 10 gallons?) aquarium, aquarium rocks, plants, and a small castle. I do have a heater and filter, but that's probably not important. I have 1 white common goldfish that I saved from being a feeder fish (he's very pretty!) a rosy red minnow (also saved from being a feeder fish,) a plecostomus, a dalmation molly and a pink fish that I don't remember the name of. They are all still very small, each probably about an inch long. How many more fish can I have in my tank so that each fish is still comfortable. I know that feeder fish can deal with a large number of fish in a small space, but I'm worried about my tropical fish. Thanks for reading! P.S. I know that my plecostomus will get to about 2 ft. but the pet store said I can trade him in for a smaller one when he outgrows my tank, so no worries there. more

hi i am currently cycling my fish tank for a week, and would really enjoy to have a long lived tropical companion fish. i was thinking just one large catfish, because i love their looks and i think they live for a long time and make GREAT pets. if so what catfish,(by itself or a pair) would thrive in a ten gallon tank with no other fish but a gourami. i have never had a fish before and was thinking 'bout a pictus os mlarge sydontis, like an african featherfin. please, large beginner catfish only. thank you and good night.(longlived please!) more

Resolved Question: My Pumpkinseed Sunfish won't eat!?

I just recently brought back a 4-5 inch pumkinseed sunfish back home into my aquarium after catching it at the adirondacks. Ive introduced him into a 10 gallon tank with a 5 inch Gaurami from another tank and when feeding time came around i dropped in tropical flake fish food and a Cichlid color enhancing blend into the fish tank but he ignores it or seems to not realize what it is. How do I get it to eat? I know it must still be traumatized from being hooked and released into a 10 gallon container lol but when i was fishing off the cove these sunnies would eat a hook if it dropped into the water. What is going on? more

Resolved Question: Homemade plants for tropical fish tank?

Does anyone have experience with making your own plants for a fish tank? What types of plastic to use or avoid? how do I make sure I don't poison my water? I see bunches of plastic plants and flowers at the local hobby store that are very cheap and could be trimmed to look nice in a tank. I'm not sure what they're made out of, or what they might be painted with. also I'd like to make my own bases for the plants out of aquarium gravel to blend in with the tank. what kind of glue or epoxy would be safe? This is a 75 gallon tropical community tank, mostly livebearers, I need more cover for the babies. any help much appreciated. thanks. more

Resolved Question: easiest sort of fish tank to keep .....?

i was planning on keeping a tropical fish tank, because i want something a little more complex than a cold water fish tank, however i don't want it so complex that i kill all the fish! i don't want a planted aquarium, because i researched it, and loads of people say it's hard because you've got to have the right pH balance to keep coral and rocks and stuff. i was basically just wondering, because i already had cold water fish (they died ages ago, but i had them ages too lol) i wanted to go for something more colourful. and can you please just explain when you need to clean it and how (sorry i am so stupid lol) i want to have a fish tank that looks really nice and colourful with loads of natural plants that aren't hard to keep thanks and sorry for the long question lol x more

Resolved Question: New neons with betta....?

I got 6 new neon tetras today. I already have a male betta and i know its a gamble when putting them together. I read that the neons need to go in first so they are all in the tank without the betta. When can i try to add the betta? And the neons dont like it when i turn the light on, why? Are they just getting used to the new tank? I used water from my other aquarium so it would have some necessary things in the water and i then cycled it for a little. I know that tetras can be sensitive to water changes, so if they are staying at the bottom and not swimming much is that too just because they are getting used to it? And what do they eat? I forgot to look for teatra food. All i have is floating stuff like betta pellets, tropical fish flakes and freeze dried bloodworms. They dont see it since they stay at the bottom. The water is filtered, and heated to 78. When i add the betta, what are signs they arnt gonna get along? i mean, ones that arnt obvious like nipping i guess....?Ok so i tried to add him for a minute and he chased them and flared at them. This worries me so i took him out. Im beginning to think this wont work. What can i do with the tetras? Will petco take them back? I have another little tank, but i cant afford to get a new heater and filter for it. I only have 1 heater and filter.. more

Voting Question: What Would Be A Good Addition To My 26 Gallon Tropical Aquarium?

Currently my 26 gallon bow front tank is home to : 2 Upsidedown Catfish 1 Female Betta 2 Mystery Snails I know it doesn't contain much at the moment but I would like to hear some suggestions on what else I could add. I want to add ghost shrimp to help keep the tank tidy , Also thinking about introducing a Peacock eel to the mix( Yes I realize they eat ghost shrimp :p ) as well as a small school of neon tetras or glow fish. ( I also realize it's possible for the smaller schooling fish to be eaten by the eel.)I LOVE glass catfish they're one of my favorite fish I think I'll add a few of those. plus the glofish and I'll be set, definitely should wait until I get a new larger setup for the eelAfter reading so much about the creation of the glofish I'm having some second thoughts, maybe I'll just pick up some normal zebra dainos rather than the enhanced relative. more

Resolved Question: 29 gallon tropical freshwater stocking question?

I don't have any live plants, just the fake ones and some shells. i purchased the aqueon 29 gallon aquarium so i have the filter and heater from that set. Resolved Question: Should i buy cold water fish or tropical fish?

Voting Question: 10 gallon aquarium stocking plan advice?

Ok my 10 gallon heated and filtered aquarium is currently cycling. For stocking i would like a tropical community tank. Of the following options what would you suggest? top swimmers: 1 neon blue dwarf gourami (male) middle swimmers: 5 neon tetras or 5 cherry barbs or 2 fancy guppies+ 2-3 of something else like platies bottom swimmers: 3 peppered cory catfish or 3 peppered cory catfish + 2 ghost shrimp or 5 ghost shrimp I definately want the gourami so i wont change that. But im having trouble deciding mid swimmers because im afraid the gourami could eat the tetras, but im also afraid that the cherry barbs could be fin nippers. Of these fish i have only had neon tetras before but they were alone. So any suggestions or advice about these fish is appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Can I put fish in an aquarium in my covered patio?

Right now, I have a turtle in a 15 gallon aquarium outside in a fully shaded and covered patio with no direct sunlight. I might give away my turtle soon, leaving that aquarium useless. My idea is to rinse and scrub out that aquarium well and use the equipment I already have (filter, heater, plants, rocks, etc) for an aquarium. Can this be done? Which fish should I use- tropical or goldfish? And if I may not put any, may I at least use it for cheap feeder goldfish? What else can I do with this useless empty tank? Also, I already have a small aquarium indoors and I have absolutely no room for another. I live in southern California and in the shade, there are not dramatic temp differences. more

Resolved Question: what percent of my fish tank should be open water and what percent hiding space?

i just bought a 30 gallon tank and i arranged the decorations and made a gravel/sea shell bottom. it's for tropical fish and i'm afraid i've made too much hiding space and that the decor (a mini tree with the leafy part about 10" by 5", a rock about 7" by 3" and a shell about 6" by 3". my aquarium is 24" by 17" by 12". if i want to get an angel fish and hopefully two other smaller fish, will this be too crowed for it? my calculations say it's about 1 percent the volume of the whole tank but it's very hot where i am and that doesn't sound right...it's actually a 21 gallon tank but the numbers don't change... just the fact that it's 9 gallons less than i said. more

Resolved Question: The ultimate Tropical Fish Tank questions. Can you answer all them clearly? Best answer in no time if you can.?

Now. I am going to get a Tropical tank before I go back to school in September. So I am asking the questions now. I know most of the basics like I will need a heater and nets and stuff. I'm not stupid. I just want to get it straight. Here I go. My aquarium will be 20-50 gallons. I want Danios, Guppies, Platy's, Rainbow Fish, Rasbora, Tetras and Sword Tails. Are these good choises in starter fish? How many of each kind will make them feel safe and normal? What specific type of fish would be the best? I'm after a very colourful aquarium. Do you know of any flowering live plant that would go with these? What are some foods that they can eat? Can they eat any vegetables humans can eat like Goldfish can? How often should I do 75% water changes and 25% water changes? I know these are a lot of questions but I want to make sure I have everything right. Back to the questions. Are there any medications I should keep on hand just in case? Is there anything else I should know about anything with these future fish? Thank you for your time!My aquarium will be fully sycled more

Resolved Question: How often does my 5 gallon aquarium need water changing?

I have kept a 5 gallon tank for about a year and a half now with an apple snail and a few guppies and I've always changed the water and cleaned everything weekly. I went into a pet store today called "Tropical Kingdom" for some fish supplies and an employee there told me that changing the water once a week was way too much and stresses the fish out. He said that he only cleaned his tanks every once in a while and they did fine. I thought this odd since all the information I've ever heard/read is to do water changes on smaller tanks frequently to keep ammonia and nitrates and stuff like that down. Like I've said, I've had the tank for a while now and things have been alright for the most part but now I feel confused with what the guy told me. Which information is right?I do a 30-40% water change usually more

Resolved Question: can i use my precious stone collection for my tropical fish tank?

Resolved Question: My soon to be Tropical Aquarium questions.?

I am getting a tropical aquarium for my birthday! I want to have these fish: Danio's, Guppies, Platy's, Tetras, Rainbow Fish and Rasbora's. I will have either a bunch of tanks, or one huge one! Are these good choices? And, what will they eat? Are there anymore fish that are compatible with ALL of these fish? What special supplies will they need separately? Can you give me some tips on how to care for these? I already have goldfish so I have some level of experience with fish... Should I have a different bucket dedicated to both Goldfish and Tropical Fish? What live plants do you recommend for the Tropical Fish? Are there any bottom feeders you recommend for the tropical? Resolved Question: I really think I might be underestimating my bioload(??) Any thought?

I currently have an up and cycled 15gal tall aquarium (20x10x20 I believe). The floor of the covered with a mixture of river stones, natural-colored sand, and black aquarium rocks (all pet-smart bought). There are also tons of fake plants lining the back of the aquarium (no real plants at this time). My biggest concern is that the tank must be transported to and from my college dorm every year. I have posted a few pictures of the tank here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/elves117711/Fishy/100_3986.jpg (there are a few pictures, and the filter isnt dirty -that is loose carbon on the top from the bottom of the package). Housing: 7 zebra danios (2 male 5 female I believe) ; 1 male betta (veil tail, very very passive) ; 2 mystery snails (1 gold and 1 blue) all of the creatures in the tank for the most part ignore each other. I could not be happier with the set up! Heater: Constantly on; used to keep the tank at about 80*F (it turns itself on and off) Air Stone: There is a 12in (??) air stone along the very back of the tank. It helps to move air into the water but is blocked by lots of large plants. The betta does fine in the “current” bc there is literally no current moving through the whole tank bc of all the plants breaking it up. Filter: A combo lid/light/carbon-biowheel filter. The monster is an Eclipse 1 system by Marineland running 150gal/hr (so, 10x my tank size). You can read up on it here: http://marineland.com/sites/Marineland/products/productdetail.aspx?id=2054&cid=3243&mid=3227 Maintenance: I change the carbon filter about every 2-4 weeks (i.e. whenever it turns black) and perform about 30% water changes every week to every 2 weeks with a gravel vacuum. The replacement water sits overnight and is conditioned before use. Feeding: The little fellas are fed a combination of Topfin color enhancing pellets and Topfin freeze dried medly and/or Tetra Tropical Crisps… and there is usually one little algae wafer in there for the snails. The “Rule”: Sure, there is the whole rule about 1in of adult fish per gallon or 3in of adult goldfish per gallon (I have 1.5 in of fish left over by this rule), or some say to use this rule based on the standard size of the aquarium (so mine would be a 10gal for stocking reasons because you would ignore that it is a tall). …but then, if you do regular water changes and have a super filter (like my 10x my tank size one) you have much more room for bioload reasons (I not discussion swimming space in this thread). …but then other people say that the more stuff you have, the less bioload you have (makes some sense bc there would be less water). Does anyone have experience on this? I have quite a bit of middle swimming room going unused, my fish are content in each other’s company, I do regular water changes biweekly at a minimum (although could probably do it once a month)… do I really only have room for one little 1.5in max fish? As a science major, MY bioload story does not add up. The tank is fully cycled and the filter works wonders on it. I really think I could add more creatures. Resolved Question: My Tetra fish won't eat her food?

My female tetra fish has been in my home for about 2 weeks and refuses to eat her food. I got her regular Tetra tropical fish food and I sprinkle some on every morning. She is in a bowl and I hope to upgrade to an aquarium very soon, but I'm not sure why she won't eat! I change her water every week and I'm getting really worried about her! Help? more

Resolved Question: I am going to get a Tropical Aquarium and need advice....?

I will get a tropical aquarium soon, and I want to get these fish: Danio's, Guppies, Rainbow fish, Platy', Tetras, Rasbora's and Sword Tails. I like colourful fish and I was wondering can you please tell me some more fish that are compatible with ALL of these fish.... Just so I have a large variety to choose from. Thanks!!! Oh yeah, my tank will be 20-50 gal. Thanks again! more

Resolved Question: I need your opinion on my getting my new Tropical Aquarium?

I am getting a tropical aquarium... And so, I want to have the following fish included: Danio's, Guppies, Rainbow Fish, Platy's, Tetras, Rasbora and Sword Tails. I know Danio's like to have at least 6 for their school. Are these good choices? I will most likely get a tank between 20-50 gal. But I may get more then 1..... Anyway, if you have a problem with one of the fish, replace it or them with a fish you think that would be better for this aquarium! Thanks!http://www.funfishtank.com/wp-content/freshwater-fish-compatibility-chart-for-you.jpg more

Resolved Question: I am going to get a tropical aquarium.?

Well, I am going to have Danio's for sure but the rest of the fish I want, my friend say's they aren't good starter fish. I also wanted guppies, rainbow fish, platy's and molly's. I don't see how they are bad starter fish.... Its not like I am going to breed them right away..... So, give me your opinion. I looked at a chart to see if the fish I want are okay with each other and they are!!! http://www.funfishtank.com/wp-content/freshwater-fish-compatibility-chart-for-you.jpg Anyway could you give me your opinion on the types of fish I have chosen and maybe other fish that I could choose instead... Thanks a lot!!! Oh yeah, my tank may be 20-50 gal. I am unsure yet. But I may get more then one! Thanks again.....Okay, you guys convinced me! I will get some Tetras!! I looked at the chart and they go good too! I will get them instead of Molly's. I will get a bunch of different types of Tetras cause they sound cool! Thanks!! I hope more people answer so I can hear more opinions! more

Resolved Question: Trying to stock 45 gal tropical tank?

So I have had this tank for about 3 months now, not counting the 3 weeks that I used to cycle it. Out of my first group of fish I have 2 that survived....which I found out was my fault for adding too many fish at once. The original 2 that survived were 1 glofish and 1 platy. So, I did water changes and waited 2 weeks before adding anymore fish. In the second group of fish I bought 2 glofish, 1 mickey, 1 pleco, and 1 platy. Well, the mickey died 2 days later, which he was acting funny from the time he was put in the bag to go home, the pleco is just fine as of now, and one of the glofish lasted until I put the next group of fish in the tank a couple weeks later. In the 3rd group of fish I added, which was last Saturday, 4 neon tetras, 1 platy and 1 swordtail platy. I lost one neon the very next morning, which they are very small ones, so I figured I would loose at least one of them. Well the platy from the 2nd group was a the smallest female, she died on Monday and the Swordtail Platy, which was the only male platy I had, I found him at the bottom of the tank this morning. I did a water change Sunday after I added the new fish...should I have not done that? I would also maybe like to find a buddy that wouldn't mind emailing or chatting on messenger to help me with my aquarium questions. I am fairly new to this, and I am starting to get very discouraged. I love the tropical fish but are they harty enough for a beginner? Thanks for any answers! Oh and I have left 2 platys both females 2 glofish 1 pleco 3 neon tetras more

Voting Question: Is there really roots underwater?

Im setting up a new planted aquarium, and my main design will be with roots. I always had roots in my planted aquariums before. I want to make my aquarium closer to nature as possible, and I never saw a picture with roots in the real tropical fish environment. Are there roots in the real fish environment? Can someone provide me a picture? The roots are very famous among the planted aquariums, but i really want to know if this is like that also in the real tropical fish environment, Thank you in advancelol, this is not what i talked about... this: http://static.letsbuyit.com/filer/images/uk/products/original/151/56/mangrove-root-artificial-aquarium-decoration-large-size-44-x-21-x-40-cm-15156063.jpeg more

Resolved Question: Marine aquarium inhabitants suggestions for my 220L (50 gallon) aquarium?

I'm setting up a new 220L (50 gallon) saltwater aquarium with a 90L (20 gallon) sump, and don't want to pay for metal halide lighting. I have a few kilos of live rock and a few kilos of live sand as my substrate. I have 3 years of freshwater tropical aquarium experience and am well read on the topic so I know a little about aquarium set up and maintenance. What advice/suggestions do you have for inhabitants for my tank? Cheers more

Resolved Question: Stocking 10 gallon betta tank?

So my tank is fully Cycled and I have 1 Betta (Turbo) - Rescued from Petsmart and almost completely healed from his Fit Rot. Now I want to add some bottom Dwellers to give the tank some more life, not that my Betta's boring, but I would like one other species in my little aquarium. Now I was thinking either Cory's or Oto's now I was leaning towards Cory's but there are no Dwarf kinds in my area. So would a normal Peppered Cory school be okay in this 10 gallon? Or would they be to much? Oto's seemed really fun, and I would defiantly be up for getting some of them (maybe 3?) I heard their not schooling fish, but they like to be in a small group? Would the Oto's be okay in the Tropical Betta environment? Thanks for the advice!Oh also, my tank has Silk plants, Not real. Unfortunately I just havn't had the time to really take the time to set up a nice planted tank yet. Possibly in the future. But not at this moment, will the upset the Oto's? - I heard like like planted tanks. more
